Washington refuses to trade Trent Williams

Bruce Allen continues to do Bruce Allen things.

With the relationship between Washington and left tackle Trent Williams fractured, the Washington team president continues to believe that the passage of time will somehow unfracture the relationship, resulting in Williams walking through the door, reporting for duty, and playing for the team.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Washington has told multiple teams that Williams will not be traded. Teams repeatedly have inquired, per Schefter, and teams repeatedly have been rebuffed.

Washington reportedly believes that training-camp fines in the amount of $40,000 per day will result in Williams eventually caving. But Williams isn’t flinching, either; with no intention to ever return to the team (and no game checks from which to withhold the fine amounts), he believes the team will have no way to recover the $40,000 per day.

Signed through 2020, the two remaining years of Williams’ contract will toll if he doesn’t report in time to get credit for 2019. Based on the Joey Galloway arbitration outcome from nearly 20 years ago, Williams needs to be on the 53-man roster for at least eight games to safely qualify.

Two years ago, Texans tackle Duane Brown showed up in time for 2017 contract-year credit, and he was dealt to Seattle before the trade deadline. Whether Williams follows that same path remains to be seen; however, the fact that Williams reportedly believes the team bungled the handling of the benign tumor on his head makes this situation different. Williams hasn’t wavered in his desire to never play for Washington again.

He’s due to make $10.85 million this year, and not playing would expose him to a bonus forfeiture of $1.62 million. And Washington presumably would go after it; when Allen was the G.M. of the Buccaneers, he traded for quarterback Jake Plummer. Plummer retired in lieu of playing for the Bucs, and Allen pursued recovery of signing bonus money that the Bucs hadn’t even paid to Plummer.

  1. What? Im surprised that all of the Redskins haters are not feasting on this yet!!! It wont be long now….

  2. Bruce Allen has done some really stupid things as the defacto GM, but I don’t think refusing to trade their best player is a ridiculous position to take. Williams is under contract (and aging) and at some point he will want to show up and be paid.

  3. but theyll sign guys like haynesworth to 100 mil deals. sorry skins fans. you deserve better than snyder. hes ruined a once proud franchise.

  4. It’s wierd to be the only team in a division which isn’t either in controversy or a dumpster fire.

This must be like what the Pats feel like most years.

  5. Washington has become a joke of a franchise. With a racist owner like Snyder and an oblivious president like Allen, the team is apparently going to remain a joke for a long time. And there doesn’t appear to be any relief in sight. I feel bad for the fans of the Washington team, and I hope that one day the franchise will be able to turn itself around, join the 21st century, change the racist team name, get a competent medical staff, and have a much more competent set of executives.

  6. Dumb organizations refuse to acknowledge problems rather than fix them.

The Redskins are being dumb and not addressing their medical staff that clearly misdiagnosed him. I don’t blame him for not wanting to put his health in their hands again. Not trading him is just proving his point: The Redskins can’t be trusted to make the right decision.

  7. Washington needs to take a hard line with Williams. The same with LA with Gordon and Dallas with Zeke. The Owners have the power in the NFL and that’s why it’s the most popular sport in this country. When players hold the power, you end up with clown shows like the NBA where players dictate where the play, like with a schoolyard pickup game. The Jets and Oakland set dangerous precedents by cow towing to Bell and Brown. No all the other malcontents are trying it.

  8. And the Skins continue to be the Skins. The entire franchise has gone downhill since Snyder bought the team.

  9. Got my popcorn ready for this one. The Redskins are going to be approaching New York Knicks territory for dysfunction. Good luck signing free agents! Yikes

  10. Before there was Trent Williams, it was Laron Landry. This has been going on for years. It’s pathetic to find out that a finely tuned athlete that works hard to keep in shape to perform at his best is hindered by an enept medical staff that the owner controls.

  11. “Bruce Allen continues to do Bruce Allen things.”
    ———————–

This is the absolutely worst time to trade a player. WORST. You wait until after training camp (like Khalil Mack) when teams figure how bad their O-line is or mid-season (Duane Brown) when an injury has a team desperate for a replacement.

Every trade offer right now is a low-ball offer. Bruce Allen is doing the BEST move for his team, which is to hold on to Williams for a better offer. Other than to troll the low-hanging fruit (ie Allen), this “analysis” makes zero sense.

  12. We got nothing for Cousins and we’ll get nothing for Williams. Smartest move is to trade him now. We’re not going to be in the playoff hunt until the Haskins experiment is over anyways.

  13. “Allen pursued recovery of signing bonus money that the Bucs hadn’t even paid to Plummer.”

    ????????????

Initially I wasn’t too sympathetic to Trent Williams situation but the more I read the more I question the teams actions. Now I wish I knew more about the tumor handling.

  14. I am no Bruce Allen fan, being a Skins fan. But really, do you expect him to just give away a top shelf left tackle? Best player on the team? No doubt serious issues here, go back to the Su’a Cravens item posted yesterday. Sometimes time heals things, sometimes not. But teams don’t just give away their best players.

  15. Show up, when lacing your shoes grab the small of your back. It’s tight, don’t know what’s wrong, but you know you can’t “go”. Best put me on IR coach. Spend the rest of the season getting massages. Problem solved.

  16. We will not trade Trent Williams , which in turn means yo your trade offers are weak sauce. If I were the Redskins I would hold onto to him until a team has a camp casualty , me personally I wish he would just come back and play for his teammates

  17. It may just be posturing. If other teams are lowballing Washington, thinking they are desperate, then Washington could be signaling that they will need to step up their offers. There is very little benefit to trading him right now for less. Later in the preseason if an offensive lineman goes down, teams may offer more.

Yes Bruce Allen is a terrible GM but that doesn’t mean every decision Washington makes is wrong…

  18. Remember folks, Bruce Allen is just doing his job. He’s just carrying the water for the owner and taking the public heat. That’s why he was hired, and he’s doing a perfect job. See, we’re not reading anything negative about Dan Snyder. Job well done Bruce! For those of you who are just starting to follow NFL football, it was the same before Allen arrived in Washington. It’s been this way since Snyder bought the team. The only thing that changes is the name of the GM from time to time.

  19. it shows you the level of tribal allegiance people have for their teams (and unfortunately for their political party of choice) that the redskins still have a fan base at all. This clown management has decimated the roster, and has no clue about football operations, yet the fans show up. NOTHING changes until they have a crowd on opening day under 5,000

  20. Perhaps a trade like,Trent Williams for Jadaveon Clowney and Tytus Howard could work well for both teams.

  21. Bruce Allen trying to get money from Jake Plummer that he didnt pay, explains why he is dan Saunders right hand man. That’s a cheapskate move based off anger. You didnt even pay him lol. I feelfor Washington. They need a proven GM and an owner who can just leave the team alone. Clearly snyder doesnt know jack about football. Blowing his wad on old past their prime free agents. Probably still paying Haynesworth.

  22. Yet another example of why I divorced this team last year after being a fan for 47 years. They caused this problem and yet they still refuse to turn it into a positive for the team by at least getting a ham sammich for a player who has not been above average for the last four years. Absolutely disgusting – allow the cancer to linger (no pun intended) and let the wound fester for the entire season and consume a roster spot. But this team collects worthless players like they are semi-precious gallstones.

  23. They will trade him when the price and time is RIGHT for them. In the meantime they better FIND another tackle to PROTECT your #1 pick this year or HE will get crushed and ruined before he even learns the position. Everything has a cause and effect Washington.

  24. How many of you would have a scare like Williams went through when your company had a team of doctors who’s only jobs are making sure you’re 100% healthy at all times and then come back to that team and doctors like they didn’t just mess up what they did? I for sure wouldn’t for any amount of money, especially if I’ve already made bank like he has. It’s just not worth the worry that he’s going to experience with those doctors.

  25. He’s made 95 million career earnings he doesn’t care about the fines or ever playing again if it comes to it

    The Giants do…

  27. Good for the Redskins! Williams is under contract and I hope they keep fining him and don’t trade him. These players are getting out of control and they need to be put in their place.

Don’t ever leave, Bruce. You just stay there doing what you’ve been doing. You make me happy when skies are blue.

    -a Cowboys fan.

Couldn’t agree more. And BTW, I feel the same way about Jerry Jones; I hope he stays forever!

    – Eagles fan

  29. These players are getting out of control and they need to be put in their place.

Yes, it’s “out of control” that a player had a terrible/dangerous experience with a medical staff known within NFL circles as a complete amateur hour. How dare he expect world-class medical care from the multi-billion-dollar enterprise that pays him to be a human battering ram.

  30. My Redskins fandom is about to run out. When this year is a disaster and the coaching staff is fired and Bruce Allen is still there with Dan Snyder picking from the few coaches who are willing to come here — I’m just not going to be able to sell myself on “Mike McCarthy is totally going to change the way business is done here.”

  31. I get the distinct impression that Trent Williams would sit out this season rather than play another down for a team that not only feels like didn’t support him, but actively downplayed what could have been very serious health concerns.

  32. I’m sure this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he’s signed through 2020 and that he sees half a dozen tackles or more making more than him……not saying that would be wrong……but let’s at least be honest……both parties.

  33. Trent would rather retire than to play for this joke of a franchise and I dont blame him….long over due for the NFL to force little Danny to sell the team….

  34. Snyder was a problem, but that seem to get under control for awhile, the issues started again once they brough in Bruce Allen. Until they git rid of Allen they will be terrible

but theyll sign guys like haynesworth to 100 mil deals. sorry skins fans. you deserve better than snyder. hes ruined a once proud franchise.

  35. Bruce Allen sounds like an idiot. Perfect fit for the current Redskins regime. Things won’t change until the other idiot, Daniel Snyder, sells the team.

  36. Snyder is the problem. Snyder. The Toad that stole Sunday happiness. Former Skins fan from back in the day.

  37. This is what happens when you have a socialist system for owners. The fact that owners can’t be punished for ineptness proves the American franchise model is a flawed model.

  38. I can’t stand Allen and I would’ve traded Williams any of the last 3 years and Reed. Top paid players that can’t stay on the field, however in this case, I would just sit on Williams. Trade him or not trade him they are still on the hook for a portion of his salary and/or bonus. Since he has 2 years left and is over 30, him sitting out 2 years means that he would probably never play again, or not at a premium paid level.

    The team has the leverage.

Regarding the tumor, we keep hearing how they mishandled the situation, however we don’t hear how. It would be better if we heard about how they mishandled it, I mean I have heard so many different versions that any of them would change the validity. Besides since he has so much money he doesn’t need to play, wouldn’t you think that he would prefer to get his own specialists to check out a non-football related injury? I would.

Why don’t players take a different approach: play the first 8 games and THEN refuse to play?

Just because they went to college does not mean they are smart…

Redskins haters?? Is there really such a thing? Teams as pathetic as the skins dont have haters. People generally feel sorry for them.

    ===================================

Wait…so not trading a guy who has stated he will not play for them again and appears to be very serious about it is something to gloat about?

  42. All this speculation about why he’s holding out, all kinds of 3rd-part comments from “People close to Williams”, but the man himself has said NOTHING, nothing at all in the media. First of all, that’s exactly the right thing for him to do, secondly, that’s what’s maddening as a fan- There’s nothing about his side of the story out there, we just don’t know where he stands. Gruden, for his part, seems to be talking as if he already knows Trent won’t be back

  43. 1. Redskins staff told Trent the growth was probably nothing serious but he should get it looked at by a specialist.

    2. They made multiple appointments for him to have it looked at which he did not show up for.

    3. When he finally had it looked at by a specialist he is told it could be dangerous so they remove it and find out that it wasn’t that serious but it’s still good that they got it taken care of.

    4. ??????

    5. Trent blames the Redskins for endangering his life.

This is a wildly hilarious take. The NBA’s continuously growing every year and is more popular among a younger generation of fans. These are human beings who like people in every other industry should have a say in where they choose to play. I understand people hate seeing young guys make a lot of money and wield a lot of power, but why?

  45. Jason La Canfora has reported from a “source” that Trent will return once he clears his home piss test.

You’re right. There is nothing wrong with holding on to a player who won’t play for you when several teams in the league are prepared to give you excellent value for him (multiple reports have said that many teams are interested).

And after all, it is more important than to be right than to swallow your pride and actually do what is best for your team.
