John Elway: Vic Fangio has been “everything I thought he would be”

Broncos G.M. John Elway’s struggles in finding a great quarterback have been rivaled only by his struggles to find a great coach. Elway thinks he has finally found a great coach.

“He’s been everything that I thought he would be,” Elway told reporters on Saturday regarding new coach Vic Fangio. “I like his style and the way he goes about it with no music and the focus that he has brought back to the practice field, the tempo and the reps. I’m excited about where we are, but obviously we’ve still got to win football games. I feel good about where we are.”

Elway was asked whether he sees similarities between Fangio’s style and former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, who apparently came close to becoming Broncos coach again in 2018.

“Absolutely,” Elway said. “I think that comes from his experience, his background and where he is from. I think that the discipline and the attention to detail is there, and I think that is the difference maker. Mike brought that and Vic is the same way when it comes down to the defensive side and what he expects. Yeah, there is a lot of similarities for Mike and Vic. The other thing is, they are both — Mike was great on the offense and Vic is great on the defensive side. That’s mainly what I was looking for in a new head coach, and fortunately we found Vic.”

Shanahan was back in the building for joint practices between the Broncos and 49ers, and Fangio has sufficient self-confidence to not be threatened by Shanahan’s presence. With one caveat when it comes to the team Shanahan’s son, Kyle, coaches.

“I’ve made it very clear to him that he’s welcome to come over here anytime,” Fangio told reporters, “unless we’re playing the Niners in a real game.”

That won’t happen again until 2022. In light of the annual turnover among NFL head coaches, there’s a chance that both teams will have new coaches by then.

  1. He did find a good coach in Kubiak, but that coach resigned after Peyton Manning retired and his GM could not find a good replacement. The replacement HC that Elway picked was an inexplicable one and it turns out to be what I expected, a bad choice. Is Vic Fangio a great coach? It is too early to tell. Has John Elway found his great quarterback? It is too early to tell also. Flacco has done nothing since he got a big paycheck, and i don’t expect him to get the Broncos into the Super Bowl, not with Kansas City in their own division and teams like Pittsburgh, LA Chargers and New England in their own conference.

  2. It will take time to rid the stink of Vance Joseph’s poor coaching from the building. Fangio has a similar demeanor to Tom Coughlin and it will be an adjustment for the team after dealing with VJ, who was in way over his head and kept the team attitude too loose. That’s why Elway need a culture change. Fangio is old school and expects results, not excuses.

  3. I’m a Bears fan and losing Fangio stung a little bit The Broncos defence will be Dangerous but offense still has Questions.Rooting for him to succeed there isnt that many Great coaches that deserve a Superbowl ring more than him

  4. Denver has won 3 SB in its history. All 3 were won when the head coach is on the offensive side of the ball (2 by Mike Shanahan and 1 by Ted Kubiak). 3 of the last 4 head coaches Elway has hired has been on the defensive side of the ball. They are John Fox, Vance Joseph and Vic Fangio. If history is any guide, the chance that Vic Fangio will win another SB for Denver is low.

First of all, it’s Gary Kubiak, second of all, they won the Super Bowl back in 2015 mainly playing defense and having a low tier offense. They are reverting back to what they want to be, and that’s having a dominate defense. Vance Joseph isn’t either a head coach nor a defensive coordinator (just ask Miami).

  6. Nothing against John Elway but I’m sure he had nothing but good things to say about John Fox & Vance Joseph too. I’m sure they were everything he thought they would be after 2 preseason games. He did bring both back for a 2nd year…
Vic Fangio has never been a HC. If he’s not successful he won’t be the first good DC to not make it as a HC.
