Looking at the games with the strangest field conditions

Thursday night’s Canadian conversion rate playing surface in Winnipeg on Thursday night ranks among the strangest over field conditions ever seen in a preseason game. But there have been far stranger field conditions in games that count.

On Friday, Chris Simms and I drafted the strangest field conditions in NFL history.

After determining the coin flip via our new trivia question approach, I made the first pick and off we went. The full complement of selections appears in the attached video.

And if we missed any, let us know in the comment. It would indeed be strange if we didn’t.

  1. The final game in Cleveland in 1995. The end with the Dawg Pound was basically a riot during a pro football game. Fans ripped the seat out and were throwing them onto the field. So both teams would play to the 50 then turn around and go the other way.

That would never happen in today’s world. One of a kind moment in history.

  2. There’s nothing like jamming your finger on the football after it’s thrown to you when it’s -5 degrees outside.

  3. That 2010 Vikings season was the craziest in the history of the NFL. You could try to list all of the insane things that happened that year and you’ll always forget at least one.

  4. NFL and Roger should be ashamed of themselves. 80 yard field? Seriously! Some politician once said, don’t you think at some point you’ve made enough money? I think he just bought a $16M mansion out on Martha’s Vineyard!

  5. All this Social Justice Warrior talk you’d think the NFL, Roger and Jay Z would have played a game in Baltimore and invited all those who are disenfranchised for free!

  6. There was a Monday Night game (Sunday night?) in Pittsburgh with the Steelers hosting the Dolphins and there was monsoon like rains. They played the game with what seemed like 5-6″ of rain on the field, like they played the whole game in a huge puddle, and as I recall, the Steelers kicked a field goal on the last play of the game to win, 3-0. I don’t remember the year, but it was during the Big Ben era, so not too far back

  7. The worst game – strictly for the worst “field” conditions EVER had to be that “mud-game” in London. The field was one giant slop of MUD in pouring down rain. Punts would land and STICK, no bounce, no roll, no nothing. No one could run; handoffs would be lucky to go for a single yard; receivers couldnt get more than a few yards down the field. There were NO lines; hell, no grass! It was ridiculous.

The teams (I think Miami-Buffalo?) barely scored.. I think it might’ve been 6-3.

I remember! On one of the punts, the ball landed nose down in the field. The field was so soft and mushy, that the ball didn’t even bounce. It just got stuck. It buried itself half way into the mud.

  9. The “gym shoe” game in Minnesota. Field frozen solid, making cleats ineffective. Browns and Vikings both struggle with footing. Vikes come out of halftime wearing white sneakers, and beat Cleveland handily.

I dunno, that 1989 season of trading for Herschel Walker and handing Dallas 3 Super Bowls was a shocker.

  11. Couple come to mind, they played a game in Tampa v. the Chiefs in the 80s during a hurricane. Think it ended 3-0, can still remember the images of waterfall coming down the stairs.
On the other side the Eagles v. Vikings that got moved from Sunday to Tuesday for no good reason other than “traffic” concerns.
