Freddie Kitchens frustrated with Browns’ offense

The Browns’ offense did not look good on Friday night, and coach Freddie Kitchens does not want to hear any excuses.

Kitchens said the absence of several starters does not justify the poor play from the offense in a 13-12 loss.

“Not at all, those guys are coached to execute,’’ Kitchens said, via Cleveland.com. “Those guys are coached to do their job and we didn’t do a very good job of preparing those guys to do their job and they didn’t do a good job of doing their job. The execution wasn’t there and it had been before. Those guys have played in other games and they performed in practice and they’re expected to perform.”

Kitchens didn’t specify anyone in particular he was disappointed with, but he made clear he wants the offense to play better.

“It’s not going to be acceptable and we’ll figure out why it happened – bad technique, bad execution, bad plays, bad play call,’’ said Kitchens. “It could be any damn thing. We’re not going to start placing blame tonight, we’re in this thing together.’’

Baker Mayfield finished with an ugly stat line of 10-for-26 for 72 yards. We’ll next see him Week One against the Titans.

  1. Glad the O didn’t look sharp. They need to buckle down an tune out the media hype. Freddie’s secretly happy he has a good excuse to ride them hard. Lets see if they look flat on Sept 8th vs. Titans.

  2. The WRs on both teams couldn’t catch anything. And Baker seemed to release every ball too high.

  3. Mayfield has been practicing shooting off his mouth more than he was practicing his passing game, questioning why the Giants drafted Drew Lock so early, among other controversial comments. 10/26 passing is a lot worse than Colin Kaepernick’s worst game ever. yet nobody who has called Kap or Jimmy G. a bust will call Mayfield a bust.

  4. All these bandwagon Browns fans are going to be crying when the team wins no more than 7-9 games this season. They are right around a .500 ballclub…that’s it!! Watch OBJ become a distraction, which he already has started to be, and go off on Baker when he doesn’t get him the ball. Kareem Hunt will be as well when he comes off the suspended list. Sorry, I don’t buy all the hype. Pittsburgh will win that division with Cleveland and Baltimore fighting for a wildcard with other teams in the AFC.

  5. Oh save it for the regular season Freddie. It’s called 1st string defense against 2nd string offense. Really as simple as that. They were double teaming Rashard Higgins the entire night for crying out loud.

  6. Wow. Fans getting all excited and people posting “I told you so” comments after a preseason loss played without most starters is almost as funny as the hype that preceded it…

  7. 10-26 against a bad Bucs’ D. During the regular season, this is the sort of line that would get OBJ chirping. Mayfield couldn’t find the high road with a map, so he’ll give it right back. Next thing you know, same old Browns…

  8. Kitchens just set the new bar for “word soup” in a post-game news conference. It’s right up there with “They were who we thought they were” and “Playoffs?”

  9. I think we see a new coach feeling the pressure. A coach not far away from possibly cracking if the Browns don’t come out hot for the start of the season.

  10. Pats might trade you Hoyer for a first if you ask them really nice. You may scoff but he was the last QB to be well over 500 at your club (10-6 across 2 seasons) until you let him go and instead chose Manziel (despite Manziel in rehab that Feb!) – Kyle Shanahan disagreed with the choice to move to Manziel so much he left the Brown’s in disgust – a serious loss for you.

  11. Arians and Kitchens are already blowing gaskets. What is left to impress when the games that count begin? One season and done.

Jameis Winston is incapable. Baker is insufferable.

  12. What I see in these comments is a bunch of people scared that the browns are putting it together .it was a preseason game and mayfield found the open guy again and again they either dropped it or he went high. He is a little rusty. He will be just fine when Jarvis OBJ chubb and Njoku are back. You guys wish you had our skill players. So stop talking crap about a team who deserves it more than any other franchise

  13. I’m so confused. Lets see if I get this, you mix you third string in with a couple of second and one first stringer, while all the prima donnas sit this one out then you have the balls to complain that this mis mosh of players didnt execute well.
Wow you are a rocket scientist. On what planet we have no idea.

  14. “It could be any damn thing. We’re not going to start placing blame tonight, we’re in this thing together.’’

He then throws his coaches and players under the Bus ! Yep the team will be tuned out by Game number 3

  15. I’ve been saying this since they were crowned as paper champion, that offensive line is a problem, and they traded one of their better offensive linemen. Vernon is playing better than I expected, but their secondary still isn’t that great either. Going to be an issue.

  16. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Daniel “blows my mind” Jones has also been playing with a bunch of no name receivers.

    Karma……..

    ________
Their own hype is the problem.

  18. savagenation2011,

That’s the scary thing. They did try and, they have in other games this preseason too. When you’re going into a season with Greg Robinson as your starting LT willingly, I wonder why people who know better are hyping this team.

  19. And let’s not forget they will be facing one of the best, if not THE best secondary in week 1. Byard, Ryan, Butler, and Jackson will shut Mayfield down quick!

  20. Don’t blame Freddie Kitchens. The Browns had hardly won a game over the last decade until Gregg Williams took over, but the Browns weren’t used to winning, so they got rid of Williams as fast as they could. Kitchens probably doesn’t want to win too many games because he probably figures he’ll get fired if he does.

  21. Have to laugh at the Daniel Jones is better then mayfield comments . Mayfield has one below avg game in the preseason and Daniel Jones us now better. Browns went 4-0 in preseason then went 0-16 in regular season. Baker had four drops and just barely missed a few throws. He will he fine. The guy was one of the best QBs the second half of last year.

  22. This supports the notion that preseason game action provides far more realistic preparation & evudence of readiness than any practice can. The preseason is needed to put young & roster bubble players in an elevated spot to perform w live fire. People should quit complaining about the lousy product & view it more as a preparation for the season (and football news writers/journalists/reporters should quit trying to derail the preseason).

A team who deserves it more than any other franchise? Seriously, what makes them deserve it more than any other franchise? Just because they’ve been so bad for so long? That’s not a legitimate reason! And let’s not start about any “on-paper” team, there have been many of those throughout the years and it didn’t end the way many people though or predicted for any of them. Remember the “Dream Team” Eagles or more recently the Rams last year? I know the Browns have had a rough way to go the past 50+yrs(I only live 50mi from the mistake on the lake), but most of that was all self-inflicted with horrible draft picks and FA signings, mainly overdrafting QBs. YES they are looking a hell of a lot better than I’ve ever seen but a trip to the SB the first year, you better pump the brakes or you’re going to have another disappointing season if you really believe they’re a SB caliber team this soon!

  24. Baker was throwing that ball with too much velocity. I don’t think the receivers were used to that much heat. His starting receivers should be used to it. We’ll see week one.

  25. Well let’s see.. The third and fourth string receivers dropped 5 out of 7 balls thrown their way. Baker was high on two passes and long on two more playing with guys who will not be on the team in 2 weeks.

  26. Now that they had a bad preseason game after two good ones we can all conclude that they’re a complete dumpster fire and their season is over.

I totally agree with you – but I’d like to see a little Cleveland success

  28. Wasn’t the Browns OC the Bucs OC for the last 3 years? Anyone think that maybe, just maybe the Bucs knew what was coming? These OCs may change teams but the schemes stays the same!

    Just sayin’
