Daniel Jones will start preseason finale, Eli Manning won’t play

The Giants have seen enough of Eli Manning for the preseason.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur announced on Sunday that Daniel Jones will start against the Patriots on Thursday in the team’s fourth and final game of the preseason. Manning will not play at all, which means he’ll next be on the field against the Cowboys to kick off the regular season.

Shurmur has called Manning the team’s starter throughout the preseason, so it’s no surprise that the team would leave him on the bench in a game that features few, if any, first-string players.

With the question for Week One settled, eyes will now turn to when Jones makes the first regular season start of his career. Shurmur has said that Jones will be ready to play when it is his time to take over the job, but that timeline remains an open matter with Giants co-owner John Mara expressing his preference for the first-round pick spending the entire 2019 season on the bench.

  1. Definitely better protect the superstar Eli. He’s in for a big season, and atleast 3 more after that because all he needs is a good Oline, a couple star receivers, a pro bowl tight end, and a top 3 running back…..that’s all it takes for him to put up average numbers.

  2. When Eli made his debut, Kurt Warner was pure class. He even told the coaches not to put him back in because it could effect Eli’s confidence.

When his day comes to be the one replaced, I hope that Eli remembers Kurt’s mentorship.

  3. “When Eli made his debut, Kurt Warner was pure class. He even told the coaches not to put him back in because it could effect Eli’s confidence.”

Then he pouted, and trashed Eli at every opportunity for several years.

  4. For all the Eli Haters: Andrew Luck.

Sorry, but the Giant’s Oline has been about the same crap for the past 15 years. Not sure what pro-bolwers the Colts had, if any but the Giant’s had one great lineman in all that time. Chris Snee. Eli got bashed and bashed some more. Still standing. Two rings.

If the Giants had kept Coughlin and fired Reeses, who knows. Giants won two SB’s with 1 good but over achieving Oline and 1 average but over achieving Oline. That meant Reese could ignore the Oline. When he was forced to draft Oline. Clueless.

  5. I wouldn’t play Jones that long. He’s clearly the backup. No need to risk him against the guys Belichick is cutting after this game.
