Report: Colts won’t go after Luck’s bonus money

Under NFL rules, the Colts could force Andrew Luck to pay them millions of dollars for abruptly retiring. But they won’t do that.

The Colts and Luck have already reached an agreement that the team will not go after any of that money, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

NFL players who receive a signing bonus and then choose to retire while still under contract can be forced to pay back a prorated portion of that signing bonus. In Luck’s case, that prorated portion of his signing bonus is $12.8 million. Luck’s contract also called for him to receive a $12 million roster bonus this year, and players can also be required to pay back roster bonuses if they retire after receiving the bonus but before playing.

Some star players who retired while under contract, including Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, have been forced to pay back their money. The Colts have chosen not to.

Why not? It could be that Luck and Colts owner Jim Irsay reached an agreement not to make it messy, because Luck did have leverage: If he had wanted to, he could have simply told the team’s medical staff that he wanted to play but the leg injury that has kept him out of the preseason was too painful for him to play on, and that he needed to go on injured reserve, which would have allowed him to collect his full salary this year without playing. Luck did the honorable thing, and so the Colts aren’t going to fight him.

  1. He must honor his contract right? At least that’s what some losers in the comment section always says

  2. Andrew Luck has earned $100 million in his career, one would think he could do the classy thing and pay back his bonus money without any prompting from the organization.

  3. Pain and suffering compensation for the Grigson years. It’s worth it to the team for the good PR.

If people want to know how far back an incompentant GM can set back a franchise, just look at Grigson, or Jerry Jones.

  4. If this was any other player say Cam Newton who gets hit and banged up just as much as Luck and Cam retired w a high ankle sprain 2 weeks before opening day the internet would be calling for his head. But because its likeable goofball Andrew Luck he is getting praised for the courageous move of grabbing an extra 24 million before quoting and taking ur ball and going home days before regular season. What a Hero. Also more props for not holding ur team hostage by going on the IR and trying to grab even more money a National Treasure.

  5. You are Ryan Grigson, You have the fortune to get the #1 pick and there is Andrew Luck.
You aren’t stupid enough to take RG3.
You luck out and get TY Hilton in the 2nd round.
And then it’s all down hill from there.
Forget about drafting Oline, just trade your #1 pick for Trent Richardson.

If the Colts had Ballard as GM instead of Grigson they would have a dynasty.
Now they are probably set back several years because its going to be hard getting a good QB if you go 6-10.

  6. Colts are just paying up for lack of money they should have spent to protect him in the first place.
This wouldn’t be happening if they would have gotten him protection.
I read more then one analyst saying this guy took a beating way beyond the years he played. Very few qb’s have ever taken a beat down like he did. Smart decision.
I just hope colt fans suffer now.

  7. Irsay probably could use some of that money for the three straight year Super Bowl run that would create the only real dynasty in his hazy drugged up mind. Things haven’t gone quite as planned after he and Grigson came up with the sham of deflategate.

  8. Only $6M of the $12M roster bonus has been paid to Luck. The remaining $6M was to come due in September. It’s probable that Luck & Indy came to an agreement that Luck won’t force his was to IR, in which that would leave Indy with having to pay his 2019 salary while being unable to reclaim a large portion of that bonus money anyways. Luck likely gave up the $6M owed to him in September for Indy agreeing to not recoup the money.

If what I just state is indeed what happened, Indy will likely get a $6M cap credit for this season.

  9. Buying his silence on injury and other history, not least the “independent” medical Luck was put thru a few days before Josh’s 180. Who else but Josh would order an “independent” one? But also of course years of the Colts lying to the media and to the League on injury reports.

Then there’s the Colts balls being under-inflated. You saw how awkward Luck was about the possibility Brady’s balls were under-inflated in that AFCCG. Luck clearly didn’t even want to be asked. And why do the Colts illegally carry ball-needles to the sidelines anyway?

  10. This is a warning to all so called mobile QBs. Learn to read defenses pre and post snap. Learn to live in the pocket. Learn to get rid of the ball. Luck had lots of potential that was never fully realized, and we will never get to see. His career cut short by unnecessarily taking hits.

Also it is a warning to teams, make sure you can protect your QBs long enough for them to get rid of the ball.

Hopefully the damage will all heal, and he will have a healthy and long retirement.

  11. Considering there is a very valid possibility that Andrew Luck will change his mind at some point in the next 12-14 months, leaving things on good terms with him is a sound move for Irsay and the Colts.

  12. “Andrew Luck has earned $100 million in his career, one would think he could do the classy thing and pay back his bonus money…”

Or…Jim Irsay has earned billions, so he let Luck keep his money.

  13. It’s funny reading all the blame for Luck’s NFL career be placed on the Colts. May I remind people during Luck’s career, Russell Wilson had defensive linemen converted to offensive linemen to protect him? The difference was Russell knew not to play tough guy and avoid unnecessary hits.

  14. The Colts are now Jacoby Brissett’s team. The organization did well in bringing in a young qb that gained valuable starting experience with a winning franchise. He received more starts as Luck recovered from his injuries. Starting for both New England and Indianapolis Brissett has performed well and seems to be able to handle the rigors and pressure of being a starting qb in the NFL. This development could turn out far better than imagined if the O-line plays better and Brissett continues to improve.

  15. Hilarious seeing people from Baltimore talking about Indianapolis, do you need reminders that even pro athletes talk about hating Baltimore and dread visiting there. When is the last time Baltimore hosted a Superbowl, a final 4? Hamilton county northern suburb of Indianapolis is the 3ed richest county in the entire United States. How is that for flyover country? Whoever the Colts have at QB will be worlds better than that laughingstock Lamar Jackson you can bet everything on that.

  16. “Why not?”

Because all he has to do is release his medical records which show the broken ribs, lacerated kidney and all the other injuries the Colts lied about and concealed, and the league will have no choice but to heavily penalize the team.

  17. I’d say he signs a deal that keeps him on staff as a qb “consultant” for 2 years working with Chad Kelly instead of paying back his bonus. He gets the itch to come back great, he doesn’t and you get a more developed Chad Kelly great. Win-win in a perfect world vacuum sorta way.

“If people want to know how far back an incompentant GM can set back a franchise, just look at Grigson, or Jerry Jones.”

A far better example would be Matt Millen.

  19. Taking 16 million and keeping it for work not performed.
This is what Colt’s management thinks of their fans. What if a
twenty year season ticket holder didn’t pay their 2019 season ticket bill?
Would the Colt management just give them their seats for free ?
Nope.Im sure they would confiscate those seat right back in a heartbeat.
    Colts fans…suckers!!!

  20. Luck did them a favor by retiring before the season so they can bottom out before the deepest QB draft in along time (possibly ever). Now they can trade Brissett for draft picks at the trade deadline and start the rebuild.

  21. No need to burn a bridge when in a year after some good downtime healing a 31 year old Luck might reconsider his retirement.

Maybe you should get out of the house and take a walk. It’s a game man….keep it in perspective

  23. Oh is the flyover getting upset? The Colts are a joke and wish they were run half as well as the Ravens were.

  24. Also name a single pro athlete who “hates Baltimore and dreads visiting there”. Guys who spent most of their career elsewhere love the city and franchise (Weddle, Maclin, Dumervil Leach, Mason, Boldin etc. etc.) I mean why are you going on the internet and telling flat out lies my man?

  25. So only some teams are AHs, like the Lions wanting Johnson to pay them back signing bonus money, a bonus that is just for signing the contract!

  26. I’m glad to see the Colts respect Luck for being honorable. Look at Alex Smith. I wonder if Dan Snyder would reward Smith if he decided to do the honorable thing.

    That’s quite an inferiority complex

  28. It’s money guys. Some of you are “It’s the Colts.” Some “Well the Pats would never do that because they make no mistakes” (read Aaron Hernandez) or “Ideal Gas Law”. Andrew Luck is classy. Not like he said give me my money or I will walk. He is a classy guy. Let him walk without having to be jerks.

I’m a Patriots’ fan and hate the Colts, but Luck would have dove for that fumble! The timing wasn’t ideal, but I don’t know any Pats’ fan who doesn’t like Luck. The franchise is dirty, stinking, and corrupt though…

  30. How many times did they let/ make Luck play injured and hid the injuries from the NFL? Luck deserves all that money.

  31. Meanwhile war vets get their legs blown off and come home to an empty apartment and a 3 month wait at the VA.

He did the honorable thing but he also has set back the franchise 5 years or more.

    ——————-
Its not Luck who created that situation.

  33. Damage limitation exercise to camouflage the numbers of the so called fan base that decided to boo Andrew on Saturday night. That’s the least the Colts can do. Have the franchise come out in support and appreciation of Andrew yet or is this the thank you? I never would have expected this of the Colts fan base. I’m genuinely shocked at the treatment Andrew received.

  34. Honorable? Uh, I think it was more quid pro quo, where Irsay would allow Luck to keep the bonus money in exchange for Luck not retiring until the season ticket sales window closed.

  35. Colts are hoping he rides off into the sunset quietly and letting him keep all the money should help with that. Luck could damage them greatly if he started sharing details of just how badly hurt he was at various times when his name wasn’t showing up on injury reports.

Actually no, I would be sad to see him go but would still totally understand Cam making such a decision, it’s his pain to tolerate or decide he is sick of tolerating. On what possible basis could I ever do differently? Can you say?
