Saquon Barkley says Tom Brady fired him up with an offseason conversation

Saquon Barkley got his best advice this offseason not during a practice or workout, but at the Met Gala.

Barkley was at the major annual fashion event at Metropolitan Museum of Art when he saw fellow guest Tom Brady. And he says Brady urged him not to take his Rookie of the Year award and think he’s arrived, but to consider it just a first step.

“It’s great to do it for one season, but can you do it for five? Can you do it for 10?” Barkley recalled Brady saying to him, via NJ.com. “I’m standing there at the Met Gala ready to run through a brick wall.”

Barkley said getting tips from veterans like Brady and Eli Manning has been important to his development.

“Sometimes you take it for granted,” Barkley said, “but to able to talk to legends that you’ve been watching for a very long time? Every day I talk to one with Eli. You don’t really take the time to cherish it. You are so caught up in the moment. Sometimes, you have to take a step back.”

Barkley is, at 22, 20 years younger than Brady. He knows there’s a lot of wisdom to be found from those conversations with older players.

  1. And looking at that offense he is going to need to run through a proverbial brick wall of 8 to 9 in the box.

  2. Oh come on Tom, he’s a running back, not a quarterback. Five years, yeah. Ten? I don’t think so…. not if he wants a normal life after football……

  3. “There are so many things you can get away with if you whine and complain enough and your team’s owner throws cash at the officials and replay booth technicians”

  4. Tom: You gotta cheat to win.
Saquon: so that’s the real patriot way?
Tom: We use every trick in the book.
    Saquon: gotcha.

  5. To think if Brady does play until 45 he’ll be meeting players born after he joined the Patriots.

As a Dolphins fan I would like to believe this. But how would this work exactly? With all the players that have come and gone from the Patriots would it not make sense that at least one of them would have explained this if it were true?

  8. Eli got the most satisfying win in SB history when he slammed the door shut on 19-0

  10. I see Tom STILL has quite the effect on the psyche of many fans of other teams out there….THAT puts a smile on my face knowing that at 42, he is STILL FEARED!!!

  11. i hate boston sports but you’re just a clown if you think the patriots have gone to 37 of the last 40 super bowls because of “cheating” or bob kraft paying someone off

  12. Another article on the Current World champion, which means the same old tired comments from the same jealous posters. It’s so predictable, it’s also so sad that this is how they choose to spend their time. SMH over that!
Can’t wait to see # SIX World Championship banner go up!

But it still hasn’t felt good to win zero playoff games in the last 7 years… amirite?

  14. Say what you want about Brady but you can never question his love and commitment to the game. Nice move of him offering Saquan some food for thought.

  15. Giants fans still clinging to that those SB wins in 2011 and 2007. They were great upsets but the giants have made the playoffs once since then. Time to move on, Eli is toast. Brady still may have a few season left but is older

And since the last time tho giants won a SB Patriots have won more SB than the giants have won playoff games.

    Let that sink in….

  17. People are generationally defensive. As a lifelong Nomar Garciaparra guy, I used to hate on Arod and Jeter like it was my job. Now I find myself saying things like “Lindor or Machado couldn’t hold a candle to the big trio of the late 90’s!” Somewhere in the last 10-15 years, I’ve developed a sort of protective view of the baseball greats from when I was in my younger/high school/college years.

I think 30 years from now, the same guys on here crying about Brady being a cheater and Rodgers being soft will be saying the new wave of QBs could never compete with all the big QBs of past decades (Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, etc.)

  18. The NFC East is Kryptonite to the Patriots in Super Bowls. Would be curious to see what would happen if the Pats played the Washington team in the SB, but we know that is never going to happen.

  19. So Brady is old enough to be Sequon’s dad who is a dad himself? Wow.

NFL players fear the constant coddling by the refs and replay booth they give the Patriots. Touch Brady on the chest? That’s a 15 yard penalty and automatic first down.

  21. Lol Pats fans are still so bitter about those 2 superbowls they lost. It’s hilarious.

Pats fans bitter????? What exactly is there to be “bitter about “??? The Pats are the reigning Super Bowl Champs!!! We get to watch Super Bowl banner # SIX go up soon! It’s been “wicked awesome “ being a New England sports fan!!! Twelve Championships parades since 2000!!!
    Life is good!!!!!

Barry Sanders was close. And that’s Barkley’s idol.

  24. The real story here is the humility of Barkley. Nice to see a kid show reverence to those before him and understand the message they deliver. Rare in sports these days.

  25. “There are so many things you can get away with if you whine and complain enough and your team’s owner throws cash at the officials and replay booth technicians”

and if any of that was even remotely true, you wouldn’t have to make stuff up like this to slander him.

  26. Goes to show the lack of leadership Eli must bring to the table for the NYG. A player on his team seeks advice from a different team’s QB. Why not? TB IS the GOAT. Period.
