LeSean McCoy to join Chiefs, reunite with Andy Reid

It didn’t take long for LeSean McCoy to find a new team following his release from the Buffalo Bills.

The 11-year NFL veteran running back is set to reunite with his former head coach Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs, a source told PFT late Saturday night.

The Los Angeles Chargers were also in the mix for McCoy’s services as head coach Anthony Lynn had previously served as McCoy’s running backs coach in Buffalo. Instead, McCoy opted to re-join the head coach with whom he spent his first four seasons in the NFL as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

McCoy is coming off the least productive season of his career. He gained just 514 yards in 14 games for Buffalo last season, eclipsing the 637 yards gained as a rookie in 2009 as the lowest output of his career. However, McCoy looked like he still had something left in the tank in rushing for 37 yards on six carries in Buffalo’s third preseason game against the Detroit Lions.

The Chiefs dealt Carlos Hyde to the Houston Texans earlier in the day, electing to go forward with Damien Williams, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson as their running back group. Now McCoy will add another dimension to the group while hoping to rekindle some of his early success with the Eagles in Kansas City.

  1. Not surprising. Andy Reid and McCoy have a history and Reid loves reclamation projects (aka players with “issues” off the field). He knows how to get the best out of troubled players and if McCoy can stay healthy, he and Williams are a plenty solid one-two punch at RB.

  2. Shady’s low production last season was not on him. The Bills OL in 2018 was the worst in the NFL -that’s why there is only one O-lineman left from last year.

  3. He was involved with a fight with off duty cops and was accused of having his girlfriend beat up, so he fits the culture

  4. Maybe as a role player but the tank is almost empty. And don’t get your hopes up that he can be the key to get past the Patriots – in the Bills’ two games last year he amassed 22yds rush on 18 attempts! He did better in recs, a seemingly nice 82yds on paper in the first game but 38yds of it was in trash time, and Pats completely shut him down to 10yds in the 2nd game.

  5. This set-up in KC with Mahommes & Reid will revive Shady’s career. Watch him receiving out of the backfield, they will be deadly. Just hope KC loaded up enough in D, time to pounce on them boys from Boston.

  6. Good for LeSean McCoy. I believe he has plenty of gas in the tank and will help the Chiefs. Sorry the Bills let him go. Would have liked to see him and Gore push each other throughout the season.

  7. The strongest team gets even stronger. The Chiefs are now Americas team, and and Mahomes is the new face of the league. Tom Brady and Belichick will slink away after the Chiefs win the Super Bowl this season

  8. “Now McCoy will add another dimension to the group”

Used up and over the hill always helps an offense.

  9. Is Big Red the worst Big Game coach in NFL history? 1-5 in championship games (4 at home), 0-1 in a Super Bowl.

    Lol! Thanks for the laugh!!!

  11. “Is Big Red the worst Big Game coach in NFL history?”

Certainly the worst at clock management. He’s still saving those timeouts from OT during the AFC Championship game from last season lolz

  12. Good Luck Shady…I hope you get your Super Bowl ring. He was great in Buffalo. We will miss him !!!! Buffalo will always Love you !!

He was picked up by KC not the reigning World Champions !

  13. Nice insurance policy for the Chiefs. When one of their players gets suspended because he kicks a woman or breaks a toddler’s arm, Shady can pick up the slack. Character guy.

Since Damien Williams was never a bell cow and Shady has plenty of experience in Andy Reid’s system, it seems like a no-brainer to bring him to KC and work him into the committee approach Reid was describing earlier this summer.

Shady to Chiefs wasn’t a very popular opinion at this time yesterday, but it wasn’t hard to connect these dots. It was an obvious need for KC and a nice fit for both the team and the player.

Wish Shady nothing by the best,
Except against the Bills of course

Don’t worry, pretty sure they’ll be playing against each other at some point this season.

  16. When did chiefs fans get so annoying? Never heard anything from them before mahomes showed up & now it’s best team this, everything is great about them that…I wouldn’t be so quick to be claiming Super Bowl when you still have to go through Brady & billichick. Qualifier: I’m far from a patriot fan, I just have eyes and haven’t seen many teams coming out of the AFC not named the patriots over the past 10 years

Yeah, get used to it. We’re going to be around for awhile.

  18. So in the last day the Chiefs got a decent OT prospect for a RB that is terrible and is getting cut and replaced him with Shady McCoy? Seems ok to me. McCoy doesn’t need to touch the ball 20-25 times anymore but having a guy who can come in and do some damage on 10-12 touches per game and that still has the skill Mccoy does seems like a good thing for everyone involved.

The only thing they need to get past the Patriots is a linebacker that lines up properly. So there is that. How quickly Pats fans forget…SMDH.
