Trey Burton’s status for Thursday in question

Bears tight end Trey Burton had sports hernia surgery this offseason that kept him out of organized team activities in the spring and did limited practice work this summer while sitting out the entire preseason schedule.

There was nothing unusual about skipping games as the Bears held many of their key players out for the entire slate, but Burton’s status remains for Thursday’s opener against the Packers remains unclear.

Per multiple reports from the Bears facility, Burton did not take part in the portion of Sunday’s practice open to the media and there was not update on his outlook during head coach Matt Nagy’s pre-practice press conference. The team practices again on Monday and they’ll issue their first injury report of the season after that session, so there will be some light shed on Burton’s availability.

If Burton can’t play, Adam Shaheen, Ben Braunecker and Bradley Sowell would be the tight ends for Chicago.

  1. Won’t matter. Between the sting of the drama of Rodgers being carted off the field to comeback in last seasons opener to the Bears flat out being a better team, with or without Burton, Bears humble Pack on national tv.

  2. I know I am unclean because I refuse to drink the Bear Kool-Aid, this is just another of the million pieces of evidence that point to a bad year. Burton was an over paid signing, based on one play (A gimmick) in the Super Bowl. Their other TE would not make most teams.
The only way this team can win the game is to pitch a shut out against GB. The Bears have one very suspect CB, we will see. My Prediction GB 27, Bears 21, and the 21 goes like this, 3TD (One Defensive TD) One missed EP, and a two point conversion, and TWO missed FG’s. Bears Lose! 0-1……on the way to a 7-9 Season…..

  3. TE is a weak spot on an otherwise very strong Bears roster and this guy’s ongoing lack of availability isn’t helping the situation. I was over him when he bailed before the Eagles game under circumstances that were questionable to put it kindly. Pace & Co would be well served to move on from him sooner than later.

  4. TE is one of the only weaknesses on the roster, but it’s a pretty big weakness if Burton can’t play. Shaheen is also hurt a lot.

  5. Meanwhile, Jimmy Graham has a fairly substantial hand/finger injury and when asked about it Jimmy said: “It’s game week, what injury?”

See you Thursday night Bears fans.
