Chiefs win easily as Sammy Watkins has career day

On Sunday, the Chiefs looked just like they did for most of the regular season a year ago. They rolled up 491 yards in an easy 40-26 victory over Jacksonville in the opener.

While Kansas City made a statement that it again will contend in the AFC, it did not come without a couple of concerns. The Chiefs lost receiver Tyreek Hill to a shoulder injury in the first half, and their remade defense with a new coordinator still allowed 428 yards despite playing against a rookie quarterback most of the game.

Jacksonville lost Nick Foles to a shoulder injury in the first quarter.

Gardner Minshew set an NFL record in Foles’ absence, completing his first 13 passes. According to Elias Sports Bureau, it is the longest streak by a quarterback to start a career in the past 40 years, breaking the previous mark of nine set by Brad Johnson in 1994.

Minshaw, a sixth-round choice out of Washington State, finished 22 of 25 for 275 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. D.J. Chark caught four passes for 146 yards and a touchdown.

The Jaguars, though, were overmatched against Patrick Mahomes and Sammy Watkins.

Mahomes completed 25 of 33 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns for a 143.2 passer rating. All three touchdowns went to Sammy Watkins, who had a career day.

Watkins scored touchdowns of 68, 49 and 3 yards, and his career-best 198 receiving yards was fifth-most in team history.

LeSean McCoy rushed 10 times for 81 yards in his Chiefs debut.

  1. Watkins absolutely destroyed the Jags defense. Worked the safeties over, beat Ramsey 1v1 for a TD and put Miles Jack on his backside, after which Jack had a rage fit, and was ejected from the game.

Jags were never in this game.

  2. Oh. Please. Foles gets body crushed by a dirty Chiefs’ D deliberately falling on him full weight in Q1. After that Jags still hung around for a while. A win yes but no season indicator except that once again Chiefs lousy trashy D get away with too much.

  3. A rookie QB setting a record completion streak doesn’t seem like any kind of ringing endorsement for the Chief’s D. Still, first meaningful game of the year, room to tighten up. Loss of Hill isn’t going to help, but I guess more reps to gain experience for others while he’s away. Watkins, what needs to be said?

  4. If there’s a silver lining for the Jags it’s that Minshew looked pretty good. He has already shown he is better than the disaster that was Bortles–although that really isn’t setting the bar very high.

Yet the CBS officiating expert doesn’t think so, he said it was not even a penalty.

They hung around in the first half. Turned the ball over on the first possession of the second half and the Chiefs turned that into a 17 pt lead and it was never close after that.

I think a more accurate indicator would be that the Chiefs are a lot better than Jacksonville and it showed.

The Chiefs defense may not be a great indicator of his talent and it will be interesting to watch him next week. He appeared to play a very good game though. The defenders played solid on a lot of the mid to deeper completions but the passes were good enough to beat them.

You mean like when Ramesy was rolling Hill up two yards out of bounds with no penalty flag and numerous late hits on Mahomes?

Jacksonville is the home of dirty D. Chiefs still hung a 40-burger on them without Hill.
