DeSean Jackson’s first touchdown snapped Philly out of its funk

DeSean Jackson is back in Philadelphia. And he played a key role in Sunday’s season-opening win.

The first of Jackson’s two touchdowns helped snap the home team out of a 17-0 funk, although quarterback Carson Wentz never flinched in the face of the slow start.

“We were never worried offensively,” Wentz told PFT by phone after the eventual 32-27 win. “We didn’t panic. The character of the team and the culture of the organization keep it from happening. It’s a long game and a long season, and the veterans keep everybody calm.”

Wentz isn’t calm about what Jackson can do; the quarterback gushed about Jackson’s potential impact on the offense.

“He creates mismatches and problems for the defense,” Wentz said of Jackson. “He opens up the rest of the offense.”

Indeed he does. And he gives Wentz a weapon he’s never really had. Yes, the team has had deep threats, but not of the caliber of Jackson, who returned to the city where his career began with more than 150 receiving yards, two touchdowns, and most importantly a win over one of his former teams.

  1. Wentz to DJax all season long…two deep 50+ yard bombs for TD’s today..just the beginning of greater thing to come. Wentz looked great considering he hasn’t played in over 8 months and took no snaps in preseason games.

Playing a horrible Redskins team at home has a tendency to do that for teams !

You do realize Washington has a really good defense right? Think before speaking next time.

No they don’t. They have the second worst odds to win the SB according to Vegas. Maybe you should take your own advice.

  4. I was there and the second half was a lot of fun. I never felt that The Eagles were going to lose even at 17-0. The Linc went crazy when D-Jax had that first 50+ yard TD. But the reality is that the Defensive Front didn’t get any pressure on Keenum and the secondary struggled. I expected more pressure up front since Washington’s O Line is supposedly not that great. But a W is a W and they know what they have to work on.

Hmmm when did someone saying a team has a really good defense morph into you thinking they said they have a really good team?🤔

  6. I think the Redskins found out that Derrius Guice isn’t the 2nd coming of Adrian Peterson (who was a healthy scratch for this game). The Eagles sent a thank you note to Jay Gruden after the gamne.

  7. It was a tale of two halves in almost every way. Anyone saying the Eagles got no pass rush or that their secondary struggled didn’t pay close enough attention in the second half. Keenum had to hang on to the ball longer because the coverage was good, and the pocket collapsed around him quite a bit more during the second half, too. That’s why they couldn’t score.

Also, while the Redskins’ O-line certainly won’t make any all-time lists, it’s main weakness is run blocking. And the Eagles D stopped their run all day long.

Those odds are calculated by factoring the offense, defense and special teams. Washington actually is in the conversation for best front 4. Math is hard

  9. De-Slow Jackson still has lost a step – the first touchdown came against one of the worst cornerbacks in the NFL, Josh Norman, who has lost two steps. The rest of the game De-Slow was just catching passes because the Washington Numbskins have the worst cornerbacks and SS’s in the NFL PERIOD! Let’s not make much of De-Slow. He’ll not have another game like this until he plays Washington again.

  10. No doubt Skins are a second tier team. But still, after a slow start that in part resulted from some risk decisions that went against the team earlier, Eagles overcame a 17-0 deficit in a division game to win going away.

  11. that peterson scratch was crazy….dude balled out last year and couldve helped. also the tale of 2 halves makes complete sense…. 1st half was kindve like carsons ENTIRE PRESEASON game action. then he came out and did his thing

  12. Even good teams can lose to bad teams. The defense couldn’t tackle and couldn’t cover in the 1st half. That Vernon Davis TD was embarrassing.

It’s great that they turned it on after the 1st TD but you aren’t going to win most games by being down by 2 TDs with no pass rush for almost half a game.

I’m attributing the slow start to the lack of preseason (preseason doesn’t matter when you win but when you lose it’s a different story).

I also wish they’d stop going into that prevent defense at the end of the game. They never stop teams when go into it on an entire drive. It keeps bringing back flashbacks to the Eagles blowing that 3 TD lead in Carolina last year when they played it an entire quarter.

  13. Anybody up here thats saying they knew from the beginning that the Eagles were going come back is lying through there teeth!!!

  14. The skins have a good front 4 and a terrible secondary. Their LBs cant cover anyone either.

But one of the most overlooked problems on their team i still strength and conditioning staff. They’ve led the league in injuries the last 2 years. The defense barely played in the first half. Philly comes back with a running drive to start the 3rd Qtr and the D (who should have been fresh) was immediately gassed.

Sometimes the problems arent wearing jerseys or headsets at the games. (also see owners box)

  15. Give credit where it is due, the Eagles played very well for 2 and half quarters. But the Redskins played very well for 2 quarters. Good game, didn’t see rust on Wentz, saw a very good DC offense moving the ball on a very good Birds defense. Saw a good DC defense holding a good Eagles offense in ‘better than’ check for 2 quarters. This was a typical NFC East game, both teams played hard, someone had to look bad in the end.

No ess man! Guice had 18 yds on 10 carries! a whopping 1.8 ypc avg. lolskins! Shoulda had AP on standby instead of in street clothes… Gruden is a DOOF!

  17. Redskins typically play the Eagles very tough throughout their history. A win against a division opponent is always big. Big win Philly.
