Early mutiny in Miami

Losing 59-10 at any level of football leaves a mark. In Miami, it’s sparking a mutiny.

Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, multiple Dolphins players contacted their agents after Sunday’s season-opening blowout loss and directed them to attempt to engineer trades elsewhere. The players believe that the coaching staff, despite claiming that they intend to try to win, aren’t serious about competing and winning and by all appearances have bought into the notion that the Dolphins will take their lumps now in the hopes of laying the foundation via high draft picks for building a successful team later.

Coach Brian Flores consistently has denied an intention to tank, but the first rule of Tank Club is never talk about Tank Club.

And even if Flores insists that there’s no tanking, that doesn’t keep the players from: (1) believing it’s happening, based on the trade that sent tackle Laremy Tunsil and receiver Kenny Still to Houston eight days ago; and (2) wanting to be no part of it.

The Dolphins informed PFT that they have not heard from any agents or players regarding this matter, and that they have not received any requests for players to be traded.

Again, this doesn’t mean that coach Brian Flores and his staff are actually not trying to win. Flores is a respected coach with a strong work ethic and high character. But the perception wasn’t good before Sunday, and now it’s getting worse after a 49-point loss to the Ravens.

It’s inevitable that, eventually, people inside the locker room were going to notice. They now have, and some of them want out.

  1. I find it funny that any player after today’s beat down should be concerned about anything else other than improving on their play because this whole team laid down.

If any of them want to be traded send them packing because they’re part of the problem and not the solution.

  2. I feel bad for Flores. He seems like a good guy. I’m not sure what hand he played in the dismantling of the team but something tells me he regrets taking that job now. I can’t imagine the front office letting him coach more than two years–they’ll make him the scapegoat for their incompetence. The Dolphins are probably at least two years from being competitive. Quite frankly, if there are players on the team who are going to ask to be traded then do you really want those guys on your team? It’s one game and they are already talking about jumping ship. Tell them to give back their salary and tear up their contract if they really want out.

  3. There is NO WAY a first time head coach with no job security and his future employment prospects heavily influenced by his job performance willingly tanks the first game of the year. To assert or imply that is irresponsible and illogical. Maybe late in the season, but no, not week 1.

If u truly believe there is a 10 year starting QB with the first pick in the draft why not tank? What’s the point in winning 3-4 games just to land pick 4-6?
    ———————————

That’s odd, I figured you’d want everyone in the league to finish 8-8 and get a Lombardi Trophy.

  5. If the owner doesn’t care, why should the players care? Losing is not fun but getting blown out is humiliating. I definitely understand where the players are coming from.

  6. players now over reacting just as most “fans” do after ONE (1!) game. The beginning of the season has little bearing on the end results. Media, fans and now players too need to calm down and let things play out, I bet anything Miami beats the Pats once this year (it’ll be their SB, but still). Unfortunately, the way things work in most pro sports these days is to rebuild through the draft, and it starts with establishing a mindset. If these players are seriously whining already, Markey is right, trade ’em, they ain’t gonna help you. The turn around time may be shorter than fins fans think with all the stockpiled picks, and a good coach. The real problem is the owner and FO who seem to lack any actual direction- to them it is a business, make money you are okay, it really has nothing to do with football, SBT

  7. Never mind a bunch of these guys saw a guy like Brown act like an idiot for weeks and get his way in the end, team commitment and contract be dammed. Sure Brown was an extreme situation but it’s given players some false sense that they can just do what they want.

  8. Steven Ross is to blame for the state the team is in. He’s been inept and is clueless about how an NFL team should be run. He brought in clowns like Mike Tannenbaum who was running the team into the ground just like he did the Jets. He also brought in coaches like Joe Philbin and Adam Gase. Ross no doubt is behind the tank job as well imo. He needed to sell the team a long time ago to an owner who has a clue.

  9. I’m not sure having Tunsil and Stills on the field would have changed the score. Tunsil is a good but not great LT and Preston Williams looks like a good replacement for Stills. The issues today were mostly defensive and I was disappointed in the scheme and execution. Minkah Fitzpatrick had a poor game and we need another corner opposite Howard.

This was a poor roster filled with overpriced average talent. Whilst it was painful to watch today, it was no worse than last 2 years (and much of the last 20 tbh). There is a solid plan here to rebuild and we’ve never had that. It’s always been the plan to buy expensive vets who do nothing and years of mediocrity is worse than this. I’m behind coach and if the players want trades then let’s clear house.

  10. The Dolphins have no other choice. They have to tear this team down and rebuild from scratch. Being mediocre for over 15 consecutive years isn’t going to cut it anymore. The Dolphins are finally facing and dealing with reality. They have to rebuild the team the right way. It is sad. But the Dolphins are now finally rebuilding the right way.

  11. And yes, any player who wants out, ship them out for whatever you can get in draft pick compensation. Don’t need anymore whiners or crybabies. We need players who are going to come in and work their tail off to get the job done. We need players whp are smart and disciplined, not the ones who looked totally inept, clueless and soft vs. Baltimore.

  12. The Dolphins will be very bad for at least the next couple of years. There will be a lot of fans that will turn into customers and will walk away from the Dolphins. When we finally have a good team and start winning again, those customers will come back as fans again.

  13. He isn’t tanking the team stinks and Flores has to ask himself if he can make the right decisions and be given the time to fix it. I have no faith nor would I trust Ross who just did the affirmative action hire to try and deflect from his personal issues

This is a case of the right coach for the right job. Rookie HC candidates just want the title to attach to the resume. They unfortunately fail to do the homework and get the advice of other coaches in the fraternity. I would have remained an assistant or be demoted to equipment manager before taking the Miami job. The right job will come around if you wait for it

  14. oh man i would LOVE to just trade an entire roster for picks picks picks! just bring in some scrubs off the street and see if you have any diamonds in the rough for the future.

i love what the dolphins are doing.

  15. And I’m NOT sold on Chris Grier as the GM. His personality seems like he’d just go along with whatever way the wind is blowing. Grier has been here for years and was involved with some pretty pathetic teams we had.

  16. This Dolphins team may break records this season. Most points and yards allowed, as well as fewest points scored and yards gained.

    ==============================

Repeat….5 year fully guaranteed contract. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said last week at the Annual League Meeting that he and the organization are all in on the long game.

“I’m looking at it now to do it the way I’ve built every business, and build it from the ground up. I’m prepared to stay with it,” Ross told reporters, per ESPN. “I am committed.”

  18. There is nothing fun about losing, especially to a team like the Ravens who Miami should have been able to compete with.

Also.. this is for Coach Flores.
Don’t become Hue Jackson 2.0 .. you won’t gain anybody’s respect by going 0-16 or 1-15. If it’s apparent your team isn’t even trying to compete you will lose the respect of your players, fans and colleagues around the league and you won’t get a second chance at being a HC when Miami makes you the fall guy in 2-3 years.

  19. Football is dangerous and painful to play.

I don’t blame any player for NOT wanting to make these physical sacrifices when they believe it is not toward winning (assuming they can be paid the same amount on another team)

  20. Get used to this! If nothing is done about AB and the way he has engineered his own exit, twice, in six months…players and agents will be dictating which teams are good for the foreseeable future. The NFL will start to resemble the NBA with players bailing on struggling teams to join winners, so they can build all star teams and win a meaningless ring against sub par competition.

What ever happened to being a part of the solution? Entire generation of guys that want to win…but they don’t want to do what it takes to earn wins. I hope this latest fiasco doesn’t become a trend and ruin football.

Flores has to rebuild that roster. They have been losers for a while. I’m not attacking the Dolphins, just speaking to their record. He got tremendous value for Tunsil and Stills. I think most of the NFL was impressed by that move. Give him time. It’s week one. We all thought Baltimore would be tough if Lamar Jackson figures out how to be a passer. Dust yourselves off and come back scrappy next week.

    ——————–

Seems awfully dumb to tank for a QB at #1 in 2020 a year after spending a 2nd round pick to acquire Josh Rosen.

But then, the Dolphins organization hasn’t shown much in terms of intelligence in a very long time.

  22. But wait, what about Rosen? How is he going to make all those teams “pay” now for passing on him in the draft?

  23. That’s odd, I figured you’d want everyone in the league to finish 8-8 and get a Lombardi Trophy.
    —–
The guy who calls himself liberalsruineverything isn’t happy with the Bernie Sanders guy. Shocking. Don’t know why either of you knuckle-heads feel the need to inject your political beliefs into a football convo.

  24. Not bad. A running back who will be benched by week 4 according to PFT commenters completely undermined an NFL franchise.

  25. When the stadium at Dolphins games starts looking like stadium at Marlins games ownership learns downside of Tank Club strategem. Only reason Tank Club exists is because fans suckers enough to pay for Tank Club while not even believing the spoon-fed lies about Tank Club. There’s like a psychology thesis there somewhere.

  26. Miami is tanking, and the Ravens are helping by crushing them. If someone wants out I am certain that the team will comply as long as they are not Minkah, Wilkins or Howard. However if you are a player on the Miami Dolphins there is a good chance no one else wants you. Your best bet is to do your job, try to impress the coaches and hope to hold on until Miami drafts an O line next year and Trevor Lawrence in 2021. We have 31 more losses to go.

  27. This use to be a proud franchise. So sad and I have watched it fall apart over the last 20 years but today was the bottom. That team was not out skilled it was out coached. We couldn’t even compete in special teams. To announce the Fitzpatrick will start next week after trading everyone away shows what a clown he is. As a fan since 1970 and season ticket holder I don’t know how they sleep at night. Us loyalty fans done deserve this. That stadium today was the most embarrassing pathetic moment of my life. Even the raven fans felt sorry for us. I am a fan of the Miami Dolphins not these idiots running this organization. I feel for Wilkins and Baker. I watched Baker today head down, so so sad. He loves the game but all his passion was just ripped out today.

  28. The Tunsil trade was OK at best. Depends on who they draft. Giving up a very good or great player is a risk. For every Tunsil Miami has drafted there are several Dion Jordans’, Eric Kumerows’, John Bosas’ that never work out. Even Make Long did not have the career we all wanted him to have in Miami.

  29. The Tunsil trade was OK at best. Depends on who they draft. Giving up a very good or great player is a risk. For every Tunsil Miami has drafted there are several Dion Jordans’, Eric Kumerows’, John Bosas’ that never work out. Even Jake Long did not have the career we all wanted him to have in Miami. Giving up a known good player is risky. You know a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

  30. You cant trade you best wr. Your best lineman . And trot out Fitzpatrick at qb. And say your not tanking lmao. Good if a franchise sucks players should request to be traded. Franchise have no excuse to suck for 20 years. no sympathy for crappy franchises. Tickets cost to much for me to feel sorry.

Wait till next week when the Ravens slap the Cards around too
    ——-
They gotta play a team with a defense sooner or later.

  32. The front office isn’t the same guys from the HBO show Ballers is it? I think they are actors, …not real football people.

  33. This team is an embarrassment to the NFL. The Ravens should not get too high on that win. It was after all up against a bunch of scrubs and 14 players that were signed this week. Haha
I do not blame some of these players that want to win.

  34. Tunsil trade was mind blowingly stupid but fans think high draft picks get you great players and it doesn’t. If it does get you great players you end up in salary cap hell like Dallas. A good team builds through the draft and knows when to trade or just accept a compensatory pick. Grier drafted the 3rd best dt with a first round pick. The first and second rated dt got drafted inside the same division (afc east). Instead of drafting multiple players to bolster the oline, Grier traded away a second round pick on Rosen who is now a back up and has no line to protect him. There were numerous signs in the draft that this team was a shipwreck. Flores is another Steve Wilks, Hue Jackson, Todd Bowles. Flores is here to babysit during the rebuild. Spin this any way you want but this is Ross and grier playing fans for idiots because they themselves are way over their own heads.

  35. I hope for their sake Rosen and Fitzpatrick were two of them. Behind that offensive line, both are going to be getting beaten down this year. Badly.

  36. These players went out and yet, they played in this debacle. And now they want out? How many of them have any trade value? Be real, these guys shut it down from the first drive of the game. No, they never even shut it down. They never had it ON in the first place. That Dolphins defense was running out that clock on the game, simply letting the Ravens do whatever they wanted. It was an embarrassment to see a group of professional athletes put out the “effort” the Dolphins did today. The team should refund every person who bought a ticket to that football “game.”

Your chances of a trade are low. In the meantime, show some pride and maybe a speck of effort in your next game…otherwise the Pats will drop 1000 yards. Many a franchise has tried to tank before, yet their players have overacheived and foiled managements plan. So what say the Dolphins players? Are they gonna do what the bosses want them to do, and lie down like they did today? Or will they start trying to play football? Let’s see.

  37. Things that make good teams we dont have stability is huge. Good teams dont have revolving doors for coaches and players they keep as many as they can because the more you play togather the better you get. Unselfish players. Pat’s dont over pay for players and basically say you want money go elsewhere you want rings come here. . It’s a proven system

  38. I watched part of this and was shocked! I saw Defensive linemen just STOP rushing after an offensive snap! I have never seen anything like that before while a play was still going on! It was a pitiful half assed attempt. Good luck finns fans…. Next thing you know they will be the San Diego or Oakland Dolphins….

  39. A quitters league. AB showed us that this week. Patriots participated in it and the league allowed it. If I’m any good and don’t get my way I’ll cause enough havoc to blow up the team. No incentive to be a team player unless its on the dream team.

If u truly believe there is a 10 year starting QB with the first pick in the draft why not tank? What’s the point in winning 3-4 games just to land pick 4-6?

    * ask the Colts

  41. So the Dolphins fans wanted Tannabaum and several other GMs out and they got it, they wanted their last 6-8 HC’s gone and they got it, it’s time for them to realize the real problem is a whole lot deeper than the GM or HC, sorry Phins fans but I seriously don’t think anything will change until Ross is gone!

  42. Here’s a thought..
It’s you players that got your butts hsnded to you. If anyone is tanking, it’s the players on the field. Don’t like getting blown out? You’re supposed to be professionals, you get paid a lot of money, so instead of whining and moaning, try playing better. Maybe you just aren’t as good as you think you are…

  43. I don’t get why the Phins traded a VERY good LT for future picks… if they were all that good at drafting… they would have found Marino’s replacement by now.

  44. If u truly believe there is a 10 year starting QB with the first pick in the draft why not tank? What’s the point in winning 3-4 games just to land pick 4-6?

You’re essentially writing blank cheques for players to not give 100% and once that kind of culture has been established, it’s hard to get rid off that. Why would anyone ever go the extra mile for an organization that may or may not change their mind at any given moment about winning being a priority? Case in point, players allegedly already want to leave the sinking ship.
You can tank a couple games along the way, but tanking an entire season from the get-go is never a recipe for success imho.

  45. Maybe someone should tell these guys who are asking to be traded that if you play for a team that just lost 59-10, there’s likely a good chance no team wants to bring you aboard.

    Hello??

  46. That’s it, start feeling sorry for yourselves. Mabey they’ll trade you to a winning team, and make you a reserve, and you can sit on the bench and collect a participation ribbon!

  47. News flash..Brian flores had nothing to do with selecting the personel that has brought the Patriots there success. Defense is his flores game the defense sucks. We got a old man at qb behimd a horrible ol. By the time this remake is done our youth will be old men. Get out now mikah get out now jerome all the partners serena Gloria sale get out. This organization 🗑

  48. Check this out and history is good to know: The 1989 Dallas Cowboys season was the franchise’s 30th season in the National Football League and was the first year under the ownership of Jerry Jones as well as under the helm of head coach Jimmy Johnson, who had compiled a 44–4 record in his last 4 years as coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes. They failed to improve on their 3–13 record from 1988, finishing at 1–15 and missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. The rest is history🐬 Soon after hiring Belichick, owner Robert Kraft gave him near-complete control over the team’s football operations, effectively making him the team’s general manager as well. Until 2009, Belichick split many of the duties normally held by a general manager on other clubs with player personnel director Scott Pioli, though Belichick had the final say on football matters. The Patriots went 5–11 in the 2000 regular season and missed the playoffs. To date, this is Belichick’s only losing season with the Patriots. The rest is history🐬 Well, you could turn things around but NOT the first season with new coaches and players. Hopefully Dolphins will win more than lose next season and the year after it’s time for playoff’s. But you have to stick to the plan, and not firing the head coach after one bad season. Build trust and you will succeed.

  49. Any player that demands a trade deserves NO respect at all as a professional. It wasn’t the coaches who looked like they were trying to make tackles without using their arms. It wasn’t the coaches who ran poor routes (or none at all). It wasn’t the coaches that missed receivers by 3-5 yards. It wasn’t the coaches who stopped moving DURING some plays. It wasn’t the coaches that couldn’t even slow down much less stop the opposing pass rush or open a hole for the RB. That said, the staff has some issues of their own. Ross himself and the GM have seemed to be more concerned with skin color than actual skills/experience of hired staff. There was no clean slate. Grier was part of the last regime and he did have a say in what players were picked. Those drafts have not been very good and yest somehow fans want to believe all those picks in the next two years will make the difference. Granted they have better odds of finding better players but history shows they make stupid decision when it comes to picks. Getting rid of some players was necessary regardless of a rebuild but these guys created MORE holes to fill. Trading for Rosen was not wise if they are not going to determine his actual value. This season was going to be a disaster BEFORE the Tunsil trade. The blow out was expected. The ease at which it was done was not. Some players try while others half-step and then complain. Get rid of THOSE guys because that mentality can never win.

  50. Miami fans don’t really care anyway. That is one of the worst atmospheres in the league (it was even during the Marino years).

  51. If Miami fans think that score was bad, wait until it’s Buffalo’s time to SQUISH THE FISH…
59-10 may very well be the halftime score…

  52. This is just further proof that Belichick and his coaching tree are complete failures. Belichick needs Brady to win, the numbers are all there with his stint in Cleveland and before Brady showed up.

  53. The story about players requesting out of Miami sounds like a good example of reporters connecting dots with no real information. My question would be – WHO is requesting a trade? The undrafted rookies that made the team? The thrice-cut offensive lineman they are starting? The guys that they picked up off of waivers? There are only a couple of players on the entire team that could even conceivably think they are good enough to cry to be traded – Howard, Minkah and MAYBE Kenyan Drake (mainly because of lack of opportunities). Everyone else should be thrilled they have an opportunity to play. It’s not like the Fins are loaded with guys that could even see the field for the Patriots or the other contenders. Fake news story if you ask me…
