Vikings make a statement, smash Falcons

Two of the NFC’s more disappointing teams from 2018 met today in Minnesota. One of them made a statement that 2019 will be a rebound season.

The Vikings absolutely dominated the Falcons today, jumping out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never looking back. Minnesota led 28-0 with less than 10 minutes to play before a couple of garbage-time touchdowns made the final score 28-12.

The Vikings’ offensive line gave Dalvin Cook plenty of room to run, and when Cook didn’t have room he was running Falcons over. Alexander Mattison also played well in relief of Cook as the Vikings had exactly the kind of run-focused attack that coach Mike Zimmer has been saying he wants. Quarterback Kirk Cousins didn’t do much, but he didn’t need to.

The Falcons, on the other hand, couldn’t find much room to run, as Devonta Freeman was bottled up for most of the game. Matt Ryan was twice intercepted by Anthony Harris, and Julio Jones was a non-factor.

Both the Vikings and the Falcons entered last season with hopes of contending for the Super Bowl, and both teams missed the playoffs. Both teams need to bounce back this season, and the Vikings look a whole lot closer than the Falcons.

  1. The Vikings look good.

Wait…since I hate their team I have to say something like:

The Falcons are just terrible. The Vikings are, too. Wait until they play a real team.

Just kidding. Good win, Vikes. Here’s to a good game next weekend.

  2. It’s a long season, but that’a good start.

Having said that, I think Zimmer’s going to be really unhappy with the penalties.

  3. After yawning through last Thursday’s game between the Packers & Bears, this game was fun to watch! The VIKINGS look pretty good!

  4. it was a simple plan for the Falcons: stop Dalvin Cook and don’t turn the ball over.

they failed to do both. i’m surprised, i thought they had a good defense.

well, the queens can enjoy this one. next week they’ll get demolished by 60. no way they score on that packer defense.

  5. What time is the parade in Minnie tomorrow?

    See you in Lambeau.👌

  6. The Falcons looked horrible. Not to take anything away from the Vikings. They looked like they had it clicking and game planned well.

I just don’t get how the Falcons could look so bad on offense with Jones and Ryan. They have a serious coaching problem there. There is no way they shouldn’t be competing every week. The team looked like they don’t care and it started in the first quarter.

  7. Nice team win there. Defense set the tone with a first play of the game being a sack by Barr. They played fast all day and broke up passes left and right. Harris with two great INT’s, DL has several sacks, and Waynes with a FF. Cook is a beast. That dude can cut on a dime, he hits the holes hard and runs over defenders. Thielen with awesome hands as always. Great win, now on to GB.

  8. Brilliant game plan, harish the opposing QB all day, run for over 150 yards and ont let Kirk screw it up. Skol.

Should be a great game in green bay next weekend.

  9. Sets up for a good game next week. Vikes offense looked balanced and solid. Pack offense looked weak and confused. Both defenses looked good. Vikes D had several very bad penalties though. 1-0. Tied for division lead. Next week won’t mean the division, but a win helps.

But you said next week was a bye week for the packers?

I do appreciate your honest comments on this.
    Thank you.
It will be a tough game for both teams.

  12. The perfect start, the game was over at half-time, but there were still enough issues to keep Zimmer upset and grinding on them. 3 encroachment penalties on 3rd and short for 1st downs is one; hands the face on defense is the other. I am concerned about Alexander’s injury, we can’t rely on the undrafted Boyd to fill the void. Need Hughes back soon.

  13. Dan Quinn should have been fired years ago. Arthur Blank is clueless as usual, letting Quinn destroy this team. Year after year, the Falcons are the most undisciplined team in the NFL and Matt Ryan doesn’t have a clue

Kirk almost screwed it up. 2 fumbles that luckily the Vikings retained possession. I swear this guy tries to go 8-8.

If you don’t watch football or know anything about football you probably shouldn’t embarrass yourself by commenting on football websites.

  17. I thought the Falcons would give the Vikes a tougher game. From the stands it looked like the same old strong Zim D (Harris was a stud), the O-line looks improved, the special teams were great and Cook was strong. Thought the D had too many penalties, and our CBs are now real thin with Alexander’s injury. Great start to the season — next week should be fun.

  18. Now that looked liked a team that used the preseason to prepare for the regular season
    ——
Good that you feel that way….don’t want any excuses next weekend. Although I’m sure if we win we will be hearing all about offensive holding, paid off refs and Rodgers’ cheap plays. But congrats on a good win today. Cousins will need more than a 100 yards next week but everything else seemed to be firing on all cylinders.

Cousins had a great season last year statistically and what’d that get you? Same place Rodger’s 2 int’s got us. He’s going to have to put it up more next weekend though, because I’m sure we will be squatting on the run after Cook’s performance today.

  21. >> cheeseisfattening says: Packer fans showing their lack of football understaing <<

"understaing" … what my dog does when it's raining outside, or what the Vikings do when the Super Bowl comes to their new stadium.

  22. Vikings had no run game last year so this was a good start. Offensive line was improved at least in the run game. Let’s see if they can handle a better pass rush. Only 10 passes won’t happen again, but if you don’t need to throw it, why bother?

Looking forward to the next game, should be a good one!

  23. Rhodes looked good but how many times did he limp off the field?

Illegal use of hands, hands to the face. Wow I heard that too much.

I have never seen Zimmer dial up the blitz like he did today.

It was not perfect, but it was impressive. However Atlanta turning the ball over in the red zone killed them.

I hope Alexander is not too bad. He looked seriously hurt.

I wish I knew how good or bad Atlanta was because I want to feel really good about this. What the heck,I think I will anyway.

  24. Is it too early to flex next week’s game? Good luck to the team to the east….hoping for a great game with no injuries for either team…let’s get it on…SKOL!

Cousins averages over 300 yards and more than 2 TDs per game in his career against the Packers. I think he’s thrown maybe two picks total but I think it’s 1 pick. You will probably get your wish. But complimentary football is something you Packer fans know nothing about so pay attention next Sunday. Also Adam Thielen is a Viking fan and he hates the Packers. Better pay attention to him too.

That number -all of Cousin’s numbers today- are a thing of beauty. That was a total team win; offense (running game!) defense, and special teams. Isn’t Matt Blair was the last Viking to block a kick? Dalvin Cook! Mattison! O-line!

I’m loving that 90-yards of Kubiak love. Kirk didn’t get his jersey dirty today.

Lots more to do. Green Bay next.

    _________________________

You know what player has the highest QB rating in NFL history? Just wondering for the all the trash that gets talked… while Cousins did have a good passer rating, you don’t sign a QB to a fully guranteed massive contract, to have him throw the ball 10 times… they didn’t need him to throw it more today. I was hoping for a shootout, to see what that offense was capable of.

  42. I love how some Packers think they have a defense after one game and have to take away a great team win from the Vikings. Lol they are even lucky to have a win. That game was an ugly game for both teams. Chicago does not have a lot of offensive talent…just a very smart coach with good play calling. A win is a win and the Packers got it….that said….I dont know what to expect next week…its possible the Bears are bad….or the Packers defense is just that dominant….or the Falcons are bad….or the Vikings are just good. Really both fanbases should shut up.

  43. This game serves notice that Matt Ryan is the most overhyped QB in the game today. He will put up gaudy numbers, but is a loser at heart. Oddly, Kirk Cousins was far more effective as a QB for a longer time in this first game than that insurance peddling buffoon over at Green Bay, Ewwin Wawgers. If were are honest, the 2019 version of Ewwin Wawgers is not the one drive where he pulled his head outside of his body. He is the clown who did nothing the rest of the game before or after that.

  44. I fully expected the fans to the east to have plenty of comments on the Vikings passing game against the Falcons while I was at US Bank Stadium watching a very solid game being played by the Vikings team.

Thanks for not letting me down… 😉

What those folks fail to realize is that Cousins had more passing yards, more passing TD’s in his first drive than Rodgers had in the entire first quarter against the Bears.

In the Vikings first drive Dalvin Cook had more rushing yards than the Packer team had in the entire first half against the Bears. He carried the ball 1 time for 13 yards. He also had one reception for 8 yards.

At the end of the first quarter, the Vikings were up 14 – 0. At the end of the half, it’s 21 – 0. To those Packer fans who thought Dalvin Cook was over used – our rookie RB Mattison had more as many yards (39) as all Packer RB’s had in the entire game against the Bears.

So why would the Vikings be airing it out in the second half? The combination of runs and passes was sufficient to maintain ball control well into the 4th quarter.

I remember saying to the gentleman sitting next to me before the Vikings last real possession with 9:19 to play, “I don’t care if we score or not on this possession, just take 5 minutes off the clock.”. We were leading 28 – 6 at the time.

Well, the Falcons got the ball back at 4:28 – so just 9 seconds short. Mission accomplished!

It was an efficient, well played team win. No heroics needed to secure a win. The outcome was never in question in the 4th quarter.

  45. Well played game by everyone & fun to watch. Cousins needs to watch his left side to avoid those sacks & fumbles, those two could’ve been costly as they were last year. Time to prepare to go to Green Bay.
