Antonio Brown is officially a Patriot

AP

We’ve known since Saturday that wide receiver Antonio Brown would be joining the Patriots and the move is now official.

The move was on the NFL’s transaction wire Monday and the Patriots sent out their own announcement of the deal as well. Brown signed a one-year deal worth up to $15 million with a $9 million signing bonus and the Patriots have a team option for $20 million in 2020.

Several Patriots players have commented on Brown’s signing, but head coach Bill Belichick declined to do so after Sunday’s win and again on a Monday conference call.

“We have no official transaction so I wouldn’t comment on any player that’s not on our team,” Belichick said on Monday.

There’s now an official transaction, although history says Belichick won’t say much other than the team is going to see how it goes with Brown now that he’s on the 53-man roster. The Patriots will practice on Wednesday with a game against the Dolphins coming up in Week Two.

The Patriots released defensive back Obi Melifonwu to make room for Brown. They also released tight end Lance Kendricks after he served a one-game suspension and released tight end Stephen Anderson from their practice squad.

  1. I have to admit it surprises me that the Patriots would take the chance with this guy, especially after how good they looked last night. But what do I know, I’m sure he’ll fit right in and toe the company line.

  2. they don’t even need him. Dorsett looks like he has found a footing in this offense. they have 4 running back options. their only weakness is tight end, but i think kendricks and watson will prove to be good acquisitions once they are back.

the only issue they have is their offensive line depth. they are now down 2 starters. that’s not good.

  3. CBA negotiations should be fun when AB’s antics are Exhibit A. Goodell should play some damage control and intervene with some punishments, or else were going to have a lot of players using AB’s playbook to get off their current team and sign with one they want to.

  4. Antonio Brown started throwing a fit because JuJu was getting more targets last year then him. Does he not realize Tom Brady has always spread the ball around. The last player I believe to catch over 100 in a season was Troy Brown in 2001. Something tells me he’s traded before the deadline. Bill Belichick does really play chess with the league.

  5. Anyone who thinks this guy is bringing anything down hasn’t been paying attention. Last night was a clear display of what the Patriots offense can do. Without Brown. If he looks at someone the wrong way, he’s gone.

  6. He will conform to the Patriot way and play lights out. His drama will stop now. Its still dirty how he manipulated everything.

  7. Thank you all…..I think of this is a win-win situation. First I get to see the headlines and then get to read all those hater comments. Can’t wait to see Gronk back in early November after the bye week

  8. Hard to believe the AB deal came together just hours after his release from Oakland. And during that time, his agent was negotiating with two other teams. Really? This stinks. Can you say tampering? Get the cell phone records of Rosenhaus.

  9. In the NFL, talent will always supersede behavior no matter how bad it is (KC and Hill), the fact he got $9 million guaranteed is there must have been other teams bidding for him.

If you have to cheat to win, you’re a loser … ahem … Patriots.
    ——————————————————————–
31 teams supported the cheating when 2 draft picks were stolen from the Patriots.
Roger Goodell is still hiding the PSI data from the 2015 NFL season because science doesn’t lie.

  11. Come back Gronk, slay the haters. You won’t have to take a beating like before. Walking in the park is more dangerous than the competition called the NFL. That defense is on point also so it will be so eassssssy. Funny how BB can build a team that nobody noticed how he did it.

  12. The Patriots are the elite of the NFL, until some team figures how to beat them. The only team to beat them in the past three post seasons was the Eagles. AFC East, how many seasons have you not figured out how to beat them? Steelers, Tomlin, why the heck would you think it was good to go for three, when you are down by three scores? Doesn’t matter about the perception of how you are playing bad in the first half, one play can change a series, quarter, game….season.

When playing against the Patriots, you have to take almost every chance available and never take your foot off the gas pedal. If you are up 30-0 in the first half, plan on scoring 60 on the second half. They are the NFL elite until someone, some team figures out how to beat them

Wes Welker did it several times, Edelman once.

  14. This signing is a blessing in disguise. Sometimes in life, the dumbest available option has a secret backdoor to the cool side of the party. Belichick knows what he’s doing.

  15. I can’t wait for them to trade for a disgruntled Baker Mayfield, turn him into a WR/DB/Long Snapper for $400k a year and send him to the Pro Bowl.

The Patriots are officially a crime syndicate
    ——————————————————-

Only if hard work and talent is a crime.

  17. Fans who complain players only care about money are now calling AB dumb for taking less to play for a winner. You can’t have it both ways.

You may not like how he extricated himself from Pittsburgh and the Raiders (two storied franchises that have fallen on hard times) but you cannot deny his talent, work ethic when committed, and ability to play inside and outside.

Belichick loves versatile players and AB is both a great talent and versatile.

  18. Bottom line: If the Pats didn’t sign him another team would have. A good low risk move for BB. AB give any crap and he is gone. If he plays nice it could be another big year for the SB champs.

  19. The penalty for tampering is only a $100,000 fine. That was the entire penalty when the JETS were caught tampering while Darrelle Revis was still signed with the Patriots.

The Patriots signed a free agent so NO TAMPERING!!!!!!!!
Just salty fans of inferior teams trying to invent excuses in advance.

  20. What a joke! This whole thing is beyond ridiculous. Not like they need him but whatever. Looking forward to the show…

  21. What’s the over/under on how many Super Bowl Championships he gets with them? I say 3. he’ll be gone before they can win a 4th Super Bowl with him.

  22. Plenty of milk and cookies left for all of the haters and armchair lawyers commenting here. Once again people if u wanna be mad direct ur anger at Oakland. All they had to do was suspend him and void his guaranteed money and he’d be sitting at home still a Raider with no guaranteed money, and he wouldn’t have been able to sign with anyone else, but instead they released him and he was free to sign anywhere

So many salty people. How are they going to feel when Gronk comes back in December for the playoff run?

Gronk lost so much weight he almost looks like a punter. No way he comes back this season.

  24. Hypocrites all. Everybody wanted Anthony Davis on their basketball team when he quit on the New Orleans Pelicans and said mid-season he wanted to be traded. AB did basically the same thing with different optics and at least he did it before the season began. There’s not one team in the NFL composed of the Vienna Boys Choir so stop acting like your team is holier than thou, you root for them warts and all.

If he can help my team get another Super Bowl I’m all for it. If it doesn’t work out there’s $9 million of Robert Kraft’s money not mine.

  25. “Brady is done”

Oh man you’re killin’ me thanks so much for the hilarity!

Guess you didn’t see the 40 and 50 yard rainbows he was throwing last night right on the money.

    Done…..yeah…..sure

What is the over/under on how long he will be a Patriot?
    ————————
Better be on time for tomorrow morning’s film session. Paying attention and being prepared to answer questions is also highly advised. Seriously, he is with a team that a) just showed how they would be just fine without him if they had to, and b) does not screw around, not even for a second. Neither are things that he has ever encountered yet so lets see how that goes.

  27. Wah…it’s tampering…wah…wah… LOL. That has to be a really hard to live your life like that. I truly wish those folks could live a happier life.

    GO PATS!

Doesn’t really matter. How long before he’s in bradys ear? Let the circus begin.
    ———————————————————————————-
This isn’t a Tomlin run team. Brown will either play by BB’s rules, or he’ll be gone.

  29. With Gordon on one side and Brown on the other the Patriots will cause all kinds of problems for defenses beyond what’s been seen. Its just the facts.

    GO STEELERS!!

Exactly. If he slips once, he’s gone.

Even with the 9 mil guaranteed for them showing how they think he is worth in the market, having him next to Brady, Edelman and even Josh Gordon (he has apparently bought in), and we shall see where it goes.

Very similar to the Revis deal. I remember when Revis was sent home once for being late for practice.

So he gave up 29 million for 9 million. Antonio needs to take a math class.

    ——-

    Perhaps he wants a ring

  35. As a Patriots fan I really didn’t want Brown with all his nonsense. We’ve got enough to win it without him. But darn is he good. If he shuts his mouth, great, if not send him packing. It is fun giving rest of the football world something else to whine and complain about. It’s fun.

  36. For those of you who say he gave up 29 million for 9 million. Go look at his contract details.

333,000 + 2019 salary(14± million) + 2020 salary(14+ million) was his guaranteed money of the contract of about 30 million.
The Patriots gave him a 9 million signing bonus + incentives that total 15 million plus a 20 million option next year. If anything he will make 4-5 million less not 20 million that you randomly throw around. So I guess you are wrong again.

He didn’t take less to be with a winner. He squandered his Oakland deal with his own behavior and when it became clear the Raiders were going to hold him accountable and void his guarantees THEN he was looking for a way out to get a new deal with a different team. You are correct about his talent but you are way off about his work ethic. “When committed” gives that away because if you have a good work ethic you ARE committed. All the drama with his teams are examples of POOR work ethic and professionalism. You cannot separate them.

“Tight Ends? We don’t need no stinkin’ Tight Ends”
    — Belichick by way of Blazing Saddles

It was originally from Treasure of the Sierra Madre…but whatever.

  40. AB only cares about himself, and getting himself a ring. He does not care if Tom Brady gets another one, if he had it his way he would get Tom’s ring too so he could have two of them. I am rooting against him.

  41. It seems odd that a head case like AB would be given a $9M signing bonus unless it has to be returned pro-rated if he screws up and is cut.

  42. So, it was OK for the Seahawks, Chiefs, and others to bid on Antonio Brown was he was declared a free agent, but not the raining Super Bowl champions? Just good business by a team that is never unprepared. If he makes it through the first week without inscident – look out!!! BTW. His agent is also Rob Gronkowski’s agent.

  43. Reporter: Bill any comment on the signing of A.B
    Bill: We’re on to Miami
Reporter: But Bill you must have like the guy you signed him immediately
Bill: We’re on to Miami any questions about Miami?
Reporter: But Bill you owe the rest of the world an explanation
Bill: Thanks guys see you in Miami

When will the rest of the planet get on board with Bill’s program? The answer is never because Bill doesn’t care how you or I feel about anything he does or doesn’t do, and lives like I do – There’s no need to explain yourself to anyone that’s their problem!! We’re on to Miami and then on to another Superbowl so deal with it haters
