Kyler Murray: Lions looked tired

The Cardinals turned a 24-6 deficit into a 27-27 tie on Sunday, and quarterback Kyler Murray thinks that shows they were the fresher team in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Murray said the Lions appeared to be wearing down over the course of the game.

“Late in the game, I think they were just tired,” Murray said, via MLive.com.

Murray noted that Lions defensive tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison wasn’t in midseason shape and couldn’t keep up with the fast pace they were running, especially in a game that lasted an extra 10 minutes with overtime.

“I know Harrison wasn’t on the field a lot, probably due to him not playing a lot in the preseason. So the tempo can get to them, and I think that’s what helped us out later in the game as we actually started going,” Murray said.

Lions coach Matt Patricia has prided himself on stressing conditioning and making players run, so he won’t be happy to hear Murray’s assessment. But the Cardinals were clearly the much better team in the fourth quarter and overtime, and conditioning may have played a part in that.

  1. Umm, I think Murray is best served to shut his mouth. He looks like a complete bust as the #1 overall pick.

All the flaws people warned about showed up and it’s unlikely they can be fixed.

  2. Murray was terrible most of the game . The only reason he was able to make plays in the 4th quarter was the pencil wearing genius thought it was a good idea to back off the defense to keep plays in front of them . Murray should shut his mouth about other teams and worry about all those batted down passes he had in this game along with poor decision making .

  3. Was it just me or did Lions go to a “prevent” style D in 4th? It sure looked like the pressure just STOPPED. If so it’s just another coaching blunder by this staff. This team looked unprepared and undisciplined in the 4th, not sure why it changed so quickly but sitting back, playing it safe was a huge mistake vs this kid QB. I hope Patricia figures it out but it’s not looking as though he has the skill set to lead a franchise.

  4. Not a Murray fan…but I watched the 4th quarter and overtime of that game and I told my Dad that the Lions looked gassed..and I was just watching from my couch and was truly not attached to either team.

  5. His first NFL game and led them back from down 18 in the 4th quarter and people are calling him a bust? Good analysis from your couch. Give the guy a chance to play and let the chips fall where they may. Not liking a team or a player doesn’t make a guy a bust!

  6. What is it with OU qb’s. The last 2 talk too much. We have Big Mouth Baker & now we have Kyler talking about an opponent in an unflattering way. Its best to be quiet & win, especially DON’T talk about other players & other teams. Just play your game.

  7. How many passes did Murray have knocked down? I didn’t see anything that impressed me with the guy yesterday. He took advantage of a team that thought they already won. I can’t believe Detroit went soft in the 4. The play calls on offense were awful as well in the 4th…pass when they should have run, and run when they should have passed. I have no clue why the Lions ran on 2nd down in OT…should have taken two shots at the end zone.

  8. Lol why so many haters for Murray. It was his first nfl game, he didn’t play well for 3 quarter and the got into a rhythm and was unstoppable. He only gonna get better, you guys are just scared.

  9. Why does everybody take this as a bad taste remark by Kyler? I’m a big Lions fan and I think there is a lot of truth to it. It doesn’t read like he us talking down on the Lions, but rather he’s just saying tat the Lions outplayed him for three quarters, but struggled when they ran out of gas.

  10. Oh goodness…

How is this making Murray out to be a big mouth… if anything, he is being humble of his 4th Quarter success..

All he said was… i think they were tired….Thats it… thats all he said…

Not they were out of shape, or gassed, or outmatched…

    He merely said…

“I think they were tired”, and many Murray haters here are making it sound like he was gloating or celebrating that fact.

  11. The hate is real. The other teams in the division are scared this young black quarterback is going to be really good, and guess what – he was really good when it counted most! More importantly, the Cards scored 27 points in their first game with the new offense against New England’s self-proclaimed defensive guru.

I don’t see the Cards making the playoffs, but I do see them at about 7-9 in very exciting fashion, with next year being even more promising. They are no longer the worst team in the league.

Well when I predicted that they will go 7-9, I actually have them losing the next two games, which is pretty keen and unbiased if you ask me. If they win or even keep the next two close, that will be a pleasant surprise and a big step forward from last year.

This naive narrative that they’re not a competitive team is one that will lose you money at the book, just like I’m sure many haters did last week. I don’t know about you, but I won a bunch in Week 1 by backing Arizona, Buffalo, and Indy.
