Derek Carr, Josh Jacobs carry Raiders to 24-16 victory over Broncos

Derek Carr completed 22 of 26 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown, and Josh Jacobs added 113 yards of total offense and two touchdowns to carry the Oakland Raiders to a 24-16 victory over the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

The Raiders scored on their opening drive of the game and never looked back. Carr connected with Tyrell Williams for an 8-yard touchdown to cap a 10-play, 72-yard drive to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead. Josh Jacobs would make it a two-score game on a 2-yard touchdown late in the first half as Oakland took a 14-0 lead into halftime.

Denver got on the board on their first drive of the second half with a 26-yard Brandon McManus field goal. However, DaeSean Hamilton dropped a touchdown catch that would have cut the lead to 14-10 late in the third quarter. Instead, the Broncos settled for another 26-yard McManus field goal to make it a 14-6 game.

Oakland would immediately respond with a 60-yard drive capped by Jacobs’ second touchdown run, a 4-yard carry, to extend the lead to 21-6.

Denver saw another drive inside the Raiders’ red zone come up short as Joe Flacco was sacked on a third-and-2 from the 14-yard line before electing to take a 39-yard McManus field goal with 8:39 remaining to make it 21-9.

Daniel Carlson would add a 29-yard field goal with 4:38 remaining to give Oakland a 24-9 advantage before the Broncos finally reached the end zone. Emmanuel Sanders caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Flacco to conclude an eight-play, 75-yard drive. The score trimmed the lead to 24-16 with 2:15 left to play.

Flacco completed 21 of 31 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown but was sacked three times. Carr was not sacked once.

Courtland Sutton caught seven passes for 120 yards with Sanders adding 86 yards on five catches for Denver.

However, the Broncos would keep deep to Oakland and never get the ball back after a wide receiver screen to Williams and a 13-yard carry from Jacobs picked up the first downs the Raiders needed to run out the clock.

Williams finished with 105 yards on six catches in his Raiders’ debut.

  1. We’re all so glad that was over. If this is what the Broncos will look like offensively with Flacco for the rest of the season, he should start packing his bags right now.

  2. So who controls their destiny and who owns the division cellar?

The Ravens, Titans, and Saints control their destinies, having established sole possession of first place in their divisions with only 15 games to play.

Conversely no losses were recorded by any NFC West team, though Arizona will attempt to overcome long odds as the only team to have sustained a tie.

Denver is the only team to have suffered a loss in the AFC West. In fact it’s the only West team league wide to have lost.

  3. Dont forget that Dline that mauled them for 3 and a half quarters. Once they get their conditioning up for full games teams are in trouble.

Hope Conley is ok, what an unfortunate accident, Abrams was making plays all night and that was a good hit to me, sucks there was collateral damage.

If we can keep teams from running it down are throat and stopping the big pass plays we might have a pretty good team on our hands.

  4. It’s not going to happen, but how great would it be if the Raiders went to the Super Bowl this year? Antonio Brown could watch the game on TV. All kinds of karma that would be…

  5. Proud of the Raiders. Came out on fire. Last year Carr had no time with a poor offensive line and no rushing attack. Its only one week but a great game by the line with two backup guards playing. Kolton Miller is injury free and played well.

Given time to throw Carr is excellent. The three 1st round rookies did well, hated losing Mack but if these three develop and they draft well next year (with 2 1st rounders) the Raiders might have the better deal.

Go Raiders – crowd were amazing

  6. Not a fan big fan of the modern Raiders team, but would like to congratulate them on the win. Hopefully they’ll have a successful season after being shafted by the fiasco they had to endure.

  7. My guys!!! Showed out tonight in a raucous stadium for the last Monday night game in the sand dunes(Oakland Colosseum)!

After the AB bs this was a welcome sight for Raider Nation! Definitely hit rid of my week long AB drama induced migraine.

    Carr, BALLED.
    Jacobs, BALLED.
Oline, BALLED.(minus both starting probowl level guards)
Rookies, ALL showed up and showed out all contributing important plays.

Defense, Played well against what I consider will be proven a mediocre DEN offense. Played very well while Conley was in. Gonna need that level x10 against KC this week. They will be minus Hill but it’s kind of moot since we’ll also(barring a miracle) be missing Conley.

Overall great effort in a game most predicted we’d lose with all the noise about Antonio Clown(loved the “F#&k AB” chants by the way ahaha).

PS: Waller will be scary this year if he stays on the field. I can’t think of many LBs, Safeties, or even CBs that can stick with this guy throughout the league and we all know how much Carr absolutely LOVES throwing to the TE. Good luck. If you don’t have him in fantasy, I’d pick him up. Qoute me.

  8. You never know which teams will be good which year. The NFL always flips 4 out of 6 playoff teams pretty much every year due to parody. The teams that end up 12-4, 13-3 a lot of times could be 8-8 or 9-7 save for a few key plays. That’s what’s so great about football is that quite frankly any team can win any year. The record from the previous season means nothing. Unless your the Patriots. But with 0 competition the PATS have 6 guaranteed wins every year. Just like the 49ers of the 80’s. Guaranteed a division title before the year even begins. Did you see the lack of effort from the Dolphins. PATHETIC! The bills, jets? LMAO

  9. That was an underwhelming showing by the Broncos. The good news for their fans (and bad news for Bears fans) is that Fangio is too good of a coach not to get things fixed wven on a short week. And they will not be facing a QB of Carr’s caliber in Mitch Trubisky. Bottom line, look for a significantly better performance by that team in Denver Sunday.

  10. Before people start declaring the Raiders as Super Bowl winners keep in mind the Broncos were 6-10 last year and looked about the same this year (a 6-10 team).

    ——————————————————————-

And they got manhandled by a team that was 4-12 last year and projected to be just as bad this year or worse without AB. So what’s your point?

  12. Denver seems to be allergic to touchdowns. They keep trying to avoid passes into the end zone until it is too little too late.

  13. Oakland spent big bucks signing free agent Tackle Trent Brown, who was dumped/traded by Frisco to New England, and who was allowed to walk after his rookie contract expired after making the pro Bowl. Von Miller praised Trent Brown after playing him in preaseaon a couple years back, and Brown is still able to neutralize Von Miller.

  14. Denver needs to figure out its ownership then can Elway and hire a real GM…looks like he missed on another QB (which everybody else new that) and hired a 61 year old new coach who has never been a head coach; the team showed they were not prepared at any level and the coach looked liked a deer caught in the head lights on the sideline the whole game. Also hiring a defensive minded head coach one would figure the D would be good, but Chubb and Von Miller were non-existent in making big plays…

  15. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Joe Flacco: this is who Flacco is. He’s a tall, strong=armed QB who, except for one terrific year, is who he is: undependable, often inaccurate and not clutch. He’s an average QB at best and he will continue to tease and disappoint the Donkeys and their fans.

  16. As a Ravens fan, this is Flacco. The Broncos reminded me a lot of the 2015 – 2017 Ravens. Slow start, inconsistent throughout, nice pass followed by a horrible pass, settling for field goals, no rhythm. Please don’t start blaming his weapons. Flacco apologists have done that for him most of his career. No matter the receivers it’s always his weapons, Oline, and Coordinator. He is what he is. Average with some excellent post season performances. Inconsistent, struggles to read defenses, slow awareness in the pocket, and has a tendency to hold on to the ball too long.

Cue the overreactions/hype from Raider fans who think they are Super Bowl bound after one game.
    ===========================================================================

If you think they arent miles ahead of last year, you simply do not understand football.

They may not go to the Super Bowl but thats because they are in the toughest division in the NFL.

Regadless of that, they also made the Cardinals look like Blue Jays, dancing a ballet.

So he’s Eli without the second SB win?

  19. As a Broncos fan, I can’t argue with any of the previous posts on this board. Fangio was a bad hire. Since Kubiak left, the offense has been in total disarray and Elway hires a first time HC that focuses on defense? Then hires an OC with ZERO experience? It’s like he’s pulling an AB and seeing how many dumb things he can do before getting fired.

The Broncos lost by only 8 points, but Raiders were in control the whole game. The Raiders dominated both line of scrimmages. The Broncos offensive performance and gameplan were pathetic. An 8 year old playing Madden could’ve come up with better plays. Flacco is trash, as noted by above posts. Elway put a immobile QB behind Denver’s terrible line and then said Flacco is “just entering his prime” at 34. Elway sounds like he’s becoming senile or the CTE is taking over. Either way, Broncos fans are in for a rough season.

  20. Two things I saw:

-Jacobs got better as the game went on. I have missed the days of the true bell cow running back, glad Gruden is still old school.
-Carr had his best game since he was a rookie. He doesn’t have a single returning position player starter on the field with him. That means it isn’t due to building chemistry, but instead growing in this offense in the second year. Haven’t seen anyone mention that, but also haven’t been looking for Raider articles…
-Tyrell Williams needs a complimentary WR. I didn’t see one last night. Someone else needs to step up for the offense to maintain success.
-Oak defense was good against a bad offense, but Denver has always been able to run the ball, and they were able to shut that down last night. Conley looked to be taking his game to the next level, hopefully his injury doesn’t keep him off the field for long.

  21. Flaco should have told the Ravens he’d give them the home town discount, take a few million less a year and played until Lamar’s rookie contract was up. Now he’s stuck with this dumpster fire of a team with a coach who looks clueless.

  22. The Raiders are improving, 8-8 maybe. The Broncos look like a bad team. The defense isnt good anymore and the offense is about what most expected. Elway just cant get the QB thing right and hes running out of time before he no longer GM.
