Jets choose Sam Ficken as next kicker

The Jets have found their next kicker.

They can only hope this is the last time they do this.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Jets plucked Sam Ficken from today’s workout.

Ficken was with the Packers and Seahawks this offseason, and was with the Rams briefly in 2017 and 2018.

He’s hit 2-of-3 career field goals, and should be a boon for New York tabloid headline writers in the coming weeks.

UPDATE 3:09 p.m. ET: The Jets announced the Ficken signing, and the corresponding release of Kaare Vedvik.

  1. Was hoping to see them pick up Elliot Fry. Ficken hasn’t kicked much, so I don’t doubt I’m overreacting, but he has only made 50% of his kicks, with his long under 40. Fry made over 99% of his kicks in college with longs in the 50s. I guess we’ll see though.

  2. Can’t be worse than Kaare Vedvik. Kid was missing field goals all throughout the preseason, and the Jets still grabbed him, luckily for the Bills he played this week and stunk it up. At least NFL teams seem to finally realize that you need a good kicker in this league.

  3. Wouldn’t need a kicker if Darnold had deep ball accuracy. At least in this debacle.

Underthrew a wide open Robbie Anderson. Maybe 6 points.

Overthrew a wide open Robbie Anderson. Definitely 6 points.

Got lucky on the basic Hail Mary to Bell for 2 points.

The Long Island Jets (sorry, is what it is) are going to waste talent again with a so-so QB.

  4. Everything about the Packers dominates the Vikings. Even their released kicker (didn’t cost a draft pick) is better. Same ok same ol in Loserville Minnesota.

  5. For the Jets fans, Ficken competed hard this summer to replace Mason Crosby on the Packers and came very close. It was a toss up and the packers decided to go with experience.

Ficken must realize this is his best opportunity and he needs to take advantage of it. The Jets should be pleased if he keeps up the level he showed in the pre season, booming kickoffs, a chance for a FG anywhere inside of 60 yards, he should be successful.

You know, I was a bit down on the Vikings just throwing away another 5th round draft pick on a kicker, then I realized Harris who played like a pro-bowler was a walk-on along with other players the Vikings have developed into VERY productive starters. The Vikings took a chance on what could have been and I can’t fault them since many teams were after Vedvik. Bottom line is they tried.

As for yourself being a Packer’s troll, you’re very lucky someone in Packerland realized a defense is needed and should shut your piehole until after week two is over…

  7. The Vikings cut Vedvik hoping to bring him back to the practice squad. Now they have their chance but I bet they don’t do it.
