Patriots trade Demaryius Thomas to Jets

Getty Images

Demaryius Thomas is leaving New England having never played a game there.

Thomas, the veteran wide receiver who was with the Patriots this offseason but did not play in Week One, is being traded to the Jets, according to multiple reports.

The Jets are sending a 2021 sixth-round draft pick to New England in the deal.

Jets head coach Adam Gase was the Broncos’ wide receivers coach while Thomas spent his first three NFL seasons in Denver, and then Gase spent two more years as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator. Thomas played his best football when playing for Gase.

Now Gase will see how much Thomas has left. At the age of 31 and coming off a season-ending Achilles injury last year, Thomas is no longer the player he once was. But he still may be able to contribute in a place where he already knows the offense.

  1. Good news in a way because it means HArry’s stint on the IR won’t turn into season ending, most likely.

The TE shake down is now in play.

Not sure who else gets dealt and where. You’d think it would be somewhere in the secondary once Watson and Harry do come back. LaCosse could do and then a Safety?

    Hm…

    First world problems.

  2. How can they do this? Something like this can’t happen so fast. The league should step in. Gase is obviously involved in this Brown conspiracy.

^ that’s how insane you people have sounded for the last 72 hours.

  3. Die hard Patriots fan. Don’t like this at all. Thomas was cut after preseason, reportedly turned down free agent offers at that time because he wanted to return to Pats. If Patriots weren’t going to keep him, they should’ve done right by a long term, veteran player of the league and let him choose his next spot. I believe in just about everything the Patriots do. They got this one wrong.

  4. I like the trade. Thomas knows the offense and might still have alittle bit left in the tank. The Jets can use Wr depth as well. He may have some inside on the Patriots offense as well, of course that probably won’t matter.

  5. If memory serves, the last time BB dealt in the division was Bledsoe and him knowing Bledsoe and Buffalo could never derail them.

This isn’t that kind of a fleecing, but it’s a nice little extra pick. Look at the extra picks NE will have next year in the draft.

A 3rd for Brown, assuming he works, another 6th here, both in the 2021 draft. Wonder if BB really likes that draft?

This will blow up in there face

    ===========

Yea BB always drafts best in the mid and late rounds. Jets got an old receiver when they already have 4 pretty good pass catchers

  7. My guess is Thomas was talking to the NYJ because Gase is the coach he signed with NE and after the AB thing, Bill said Ill just send you there. Usually I feel like he would release a vet and let him go where he pleases if he doesnt have alot of trade value but I guess if Thomas was going to the NYJ Bill wanted a draft pick in return.

    No, it’s just you

As for the trade, interesting that he traded him within the division. This was clearly someone they wanted before.

  9. It’s just for a sixth-rounder. Oh, wait … Tom Brady and Antonio Brown were both drafted in the sixth round. Never mind.

  10. If the Jets lose this week they have a good shot at starting 0-6. The Jets aren’t a bad team but they aren’t a contending team either. This trade for DT is pointless as their other WRs are healthy.

The point is the Jets will be picking high in every round and shouldn’t be giving away draft picks for a player who won’t make a difference and won’t be on the team next year.

  11. PFT writers this weekend: Patriots are stacked with receivers including Gordon, Edelman and Thomas.

PFT writers today: Thomas isn’t what he used to be

  12. “If Patriots weren’t going to keep him, they should’ve done right by a long term, veteran player of the league and let him choose his next spot. I believe in just about everything the Patriots do. They got this one wrong.”

At the time the Pats re-signed him AB was still acting crazy in Oakland, with no indication he would be released and headed to New England.

If anything they got this one right because bill is not going to spend more than a certain number of roster spots on wideouts, keeping the promising young guys was better than retaining a guy with a year or two left in his tank, and sent Thomas to the Jets where Gase has a familiar offense and can fit right in.

Bill does what’s best for the team at any given time.

  13. There is some risk here. Bill is all in on Brown and Gordon both making it through the season. Probably a good bet.

Good pick up for the Jets. They needed another good receiver.

Bills and Jets had an ugly game Sunday, but there is a lot of talent on both teams. I think fans are being premature by calling it business as usual in the soft AFCE this year. The Pats will probably still win it, but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t much more competitive. Well, aside from the Phins, who are clearly in a rebuild.

hahaha Bill couldn’t keep a straight face when he made this deal…
    ————————–

Why? I know it was only one preseason game but 7/8 with 2 TDs he sure looked like he had a lot left in the tank to me.

  15. Thomas just became expendable. Still a productive player. Especially after the game PDorsett had Sunday night. Nice they keep getting picks for the players they have no spot for. Low round picks, but still draft capital for moving around the board. Probably asked for a 2021 pk because they will have 5 6ths next yr, counting 2 compensatory. Hopefully JGordon and ABrown don’t both implode. One they could deal with.

  16. “Bills and Jets had an ugly game Sunday, but there is a lot of talent on both teams. ”

I saw two teams with pretty good defenses and offenses not so much. Not surprising as with shortened offseasons and TCs offenses don’t have timing down so well early in the season and for most teams it takes 3-4 games for that to start clicking.

Darnold I don’t know about. His longer throws had little accuracy and just chucked up in the general direction and area a receiver was in. But Brady’s accuracy on the long ball wasn’t great early in his career so that can be fixed with the right coaching.

  17. Thats because anything bill touches, turns to gold. The rest of the nfl will take any scraps they can from the pats.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It is a shame, but… No way to know they’d get AB and they CUT HIM, should have had a clue he wasn’t in their long term plans

  19. Wish we could keep them all but you only get 46 game day spots. the team is stacked ab can add alot more then Thomas to the offensive attack so the axe fell. Tough choices are part of the game.

  20. Dave Fletcher says:

Die hard Patriots fan. Don’t like this at all.

Um, that was before AB became available. There are no favors, just smart business decisions that are in the best interest of the team.

  21. I was hoping the Pats could find a way to move on without cutting a veteran who made a pretty miraculous comeback and was ok with the pseudo cut earlier. Jets are a team where he really could crack the rotation, so I think pats really did right by him and the Jets get a guy who can make them that much better.

As a Pats fan who isn’t shaking in fear about this year’s Jets, I’m happy to see this.

  22. Dave Fletcher says:

    ——————————————
I highly doubt Thomas is too upset – Pats picked him up soon after an ACL and brought him back to health. Its clear (now) that getting him back after all those months just in time for the last preseasoner was to show him off. Thomas knew there was interest and Gase etc prob hoped he’d be cut at the 53 – and I’m guessing Thomas paid BB back for his confidence while off with the ACL by agreeing to resign and let BB get a draft pick for sending him to re-unite with Gase. This is one of the many reasons why players and explayers never bad-mouth BB. Even Malcolm Butler recently lauded BB this summer.

  23. Robert Kraft today at 2pm said lets release DT, we can’t get anyone to make an offer, Belichick said, hang on I’ll call the “Jets” then they really had a belly laugh after Belichick hung up the phone, he said Robert….”we got a sixth rounder” lol lol lol

  24. My guess is they thought about cutting him, knew he was already talking to the Jets before, and decided to see if they could get something for him. If everyone gets what they want, who cares?

  25. I would have liked to see him play for us this season, but it was probably between him and Dorsett to make room for AB. Dorsett is at least a known commodity, and is starting to play well in the Patriots offense.

From that perspective, trading Thomas was likely an easy decision.

  26. Shinnbone says:
Robert Kraft today at 2pm said lets release DT, we can’t get anyone to make an offer, Belichick said, hang on I’ll call the “Jets”..
    —————
Cute day-dream except Kraft doesn’t get involved and doesn’t tell BB who to trade. The one exception MIGHT be JimmyG but ONLY because, JUST for Brady, BB prob felt obliged to involve Kraft. Yet given BB has always had full rein I doubt Kraft would’ve overruled him.

  27. 100% BB was doing DT a favor since his playing time would be too little with the Pats. And cutting him woulda meant a full cap hit on the Pats since DT was on the 53 man in week 1.

  28. I thought Thomas was finished a few years ago. He was good when Peyton was putting balls in the perfect spot where only Thomas and his big body had a chance to catch it. The balls were literally falling right into his hands. Other than that, he’s been a liability in the truest sense of the word. I don’t think teams really due a good job of looking at tape of the players they acquire. This guy hasn’t been productive in years.

Dave you one of the rare Pats fan with an objective mature outlook, but you have been fooled for years by one of the most underhanded teams in the history of sports. Realize they have no soul will cheat to win…..convicted and penalized for cheating…and willing to do absolutely anything to manipulate the rules. I admire your courage to take such a position in the land of the Fanboy cowards. Don’t waiver stay strong at some point in your life normalcy cold return to NE….I grew up there but wont go back till it changes to an area with the morals and ethics I grew p with.

  34. Whoever believes AB & JG will make the entire season are on something. Recent history shows that neither guy is dependable or disciplined enough to do so. Don’t be surprised if Gronk comes back before the season is over.

  35. Thomas was cut and re-signed with the sole purpose of having a trade piece for AB if the Raiders didn’t cut him. Once he became “free” as he put it, they no longer had a need for Thomas.

  36. They also traded Bledsoe to the Bills.

That wasn’t a horrible trade for either team. He was an 8 year bet and was in his prime. pats fans thought he was great until 12 showed up. Buffalo needed a qb and this made sense. Would have worked better with different coaches

  37. Bill does what’s best for the team at any given time.

Nice one, but watch the Banner ceremony, Bledsoe’s the representative for SB 36. He’s back in the NE fold now, finally got over his snit a few years ago about being replaced by TB12. Funny, he still had that sourpuss face during the ceremony.

    ——————————————————————-
People who still believe that the Patriots cheat are the ones who have been fooled. A smart person once said “it’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled”. We all remember how the NFL created countless headlines all saying the same things after cold weather dropped the PSI in footballs.

An intelligent Steeler fan posted a video online which says otherwise.
That video can be found by searching for the following title: “DEFLATE GATE & WHY SCIENCE SAYS THE PATRIOTS DID NOT TAMPER WITH FOOTBALLS”

Roger Goodell is still hiding the PSI data from the 2015 NFL season because that data would show the same thing happening during every cold weather NFL game.

The Patriots once had a video camera about 30 feet closer to the field than a poorly worded memo said the camera should be. Many people are able to understand that 30 meet is irrelevant when a camera has a telephoto lens. The Patriots were over punished for that and were beaten up by the media.

A few other things were made up about the Patriots and were quickly disproven. Some people never seem to get the updated information and they keep believing myths.

  41. For the record, I’ve met plenty of great Steelers fans all across the country, it’s only a very few like vasteelerfan that give Steelers fans a bad name.

  42. Every patruit fan after every trade. “Bill is so good. He he was going to cut him anyway”

That’s the case with every player who gets traded for a 6th or 7th. The key is getting a team to birmte who is low on the waiver wire.

The NFL announced that they were going to collect PSI measurement during the 2015 NFL season because Roger was eager to show everyone that he did the right thing in taking draft picks away from the Patriots. Roger quickly decided to hide those PSI measurements because science doesn’t lie. Football fans have never seen the measurements from any of the stadiums.

There was one story that did make the news in 2016.
Why were the Steelers footballs below regulation PSI in 2106 week 13 against the Giants?
    It’s cold in week 13.

Where is your proof for this claim? NFL tested PSI during 2015 season, never released the results and haven’t tested them since that I’m aware of. A couple of times teams tried to make a claim of underinflated balls, all the NFL had to say was that the balls were okay, didn’t bother giving the PSI measurements, just said they were fine. But then again, you’re another of those wackadoodles from Virginia, never mind.

Except this is before Dorsett had a breakout game.

And they are seeing good stuff from the rookies. It’s all business, Thomas got a lot of support over the offseason, Pats were patient with him and helped him with recovery treatment, etc. It’s just the nature of the game, no hard feelings there from either party I’d imagine. You do what’s right for the team going forward.

  50. Two things are for certain about Belichick, he will not disrespect the game of football, and he will not screw a player without good cause.

DT is now a Jet because he was given a choice and that is the team he chose. Bank on it.

For those of you who think BB screwed him, let’s just wait to see what DT has to say about it all.

  51. It’s funny because it wasn’t long after Roger Goodell was heard blabbering about “integrity” and “transparency” that Roger decided to hide that PSI data which was collected during the 2015 NFL season. Hiding information from football fans doesn’t sound like integrity or transparency.

  52. Pats showcased Thomas during the last preseason game. Maybe they can trade him now because of Brown or because of the rookies coming along better than expected. Right or wrong it’s a business.

  53. No many how many we win, some Pays fans still feel obligated to defend the acts that ended in various penalties. Just enjoy the trophies guys, ignore attacks from the past. #noasterik

The funny thing is the NFL never tested the balls in game ever until that game. We all know what the balls were measured at at halftime. Can you name what the measurements were before the game? Nope. You cannot and neither can the NFL. Nothing was documented at what the PSI started at for each ball. How can anyone accurately gauge the PSI change without an anchor point? It is comical that the NFL has not released the data gathered from 2015. If its no big deal then why not release the info. Comical it is just like you. Keep worshiping the Pats success.

  57. Is Vasteelerfan Nofooldrool?

Don’t worry about coming back to NE. We are doing just fine without you. Since you have been away the Boston sports teams have been really good. Stay away. Do not mush it up. For the cheating – yes in 2007 the Pats took their medicine. You have to go back 12 years ago and 6 SB visits later. Funny how the Steelers have not won anything since Dr. Rydze left the organization and sentenced to 10 years in federal prison of conspiring to illegally distribute anabolic steroids, human growth hormone and narcotic painkillers. But I am sure he did all of that after leaving the Steelers. You have no problem with that legacy for the kids. Go watch Murder She Wrote and go to bed.

  58. Would go “all in” on the reason Bill traded DT to the Jets was b/c DT wanted to play for AG.

He has been around a long time, he knows the Pats did right by him. He was in their plans until JM excelled and AB became available.

DT knows he is not the #1 option and now with AB, JE, JG, PD and JM all ahead of him he knew he was the odd man out and that he would get much more playing time elsewhere.

Guarantee he speaks highly of his brief time with the Pats and BB.

  59. So, AB is under a rape lawsuit now …

Is the ink dry on this DT trade yet? Because they might want to backpedal …

  60. This is a good deal for both sides. The Jets desperately need another decent WR and Belichick got a 6th round pick for a 31 year old coming off an Achilles injury. If Thomas is fully recovered, he should easily become the Jets second or third receiver.

Ummm….have you read the latest AB news? They may want him back now!

  62. The Pats may have been a little too quick to trade away Demaryius Thomas. With AB a 50-50 shot to never play a game for NE, and Josh Gordon always a risk to fail a drug test, a deep WR room could get shallow pretty quickly! I’d rather have Thomas as insurance this year than a 6th round draft pick next year.
