Report: Sam Ficken, Greg Joseph among Jets kicker tryouts

We knew the Jets were bringing in a set of kickers for tryouts on Tuesday and we now have word on the names of those kickers.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Sam Ficken, Greg Joseph, Elliott Fry, Younghoe Koo and Tristan Vizcaino are vying to be the next kicker up on a carousel that just keeps spinning. Mehta adds that Ficken and Joesph are the names to keep an eye on.

Ficken failed to make the Packers this summer while Joseph lost out to Austin Siebert in Cleveland. Fry was beaten out by Eddy Pineiro in Chicago, Koo kicked for the Chargers in 2017 while Vizcaino was in camp with the Bengals this summer.

Kaare Vedvik handled the kicking duties for the Jets in their 17-16 loss to the Bills a week after being claimed off waivers. He missed a field goal and an extra point during the game to inspire the look for a different option.

  1. I like Younghoo Koo…improved his craft since the Charger days and kicked for the Atlanta Legend….I think he’s one of those kickers that needed to bounce around 1st and then become relable. Ficken has gone the same route.

  2. Ficken is going to have a long career in this league. In some ways I was hoping the Packers would find a way to keep him for when Crosby eventually retires, but who knows how much longer that may take.

If he misses people will say “Fricken Ficken”.

It should be noted that Ficken barely lost the job to Crosby. In fact, part of me wonders if the only reason the Packers didn’t keep Ficken, is because they knew the Bears would sign Crosby in two seconds flat.

  4. Was hoping to see them pick up Elliot Fry. Ficken hasn’t kicked much, so I don’t doubt I’m overreacting, but he has only made 50% of his kicks, with his long under 40. Fry made over 99% of his kicks in college with longs in the 50s. I guess we’ll see though.

Reminds me of former Patriot kicker Scott “Missin'” Sisson.
