Vikings re-sign Brett Jones, waive Brandon Dillon

The Vikings needed to make room for Josh Doctson last week, costing Brett Jones his spot on the roster. Jones’ departure lasted only a week.

Jones re-signed with the Vikings on Tuesday, the team announced.

The Vikings waived tight end Brandon Dillon in a corresponding move. He played seven offensive snaps in Sunday’s opener.

Jones will backup Garrett Bradbury at center. The Vikings had guard Pat Elflein as Bradbury’s backup last week in case of emergency.

The Vikings traded for Jones last August. He re-signed with them in April after Nick Easton left for the Saints in free agency.

Jones started three games for Minnesota last season.

Jones, 28, has played 44 career games with 17 starts, mostly with the Giants. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2015.

Superbowl now for sure, Brett Jones is on his way to the local tailor to get fitted for his Golden Jacket according to Vikings fans.

Such a sad attempt at trolling, but coming from you it’s not surprising. I guess it’s boring over there & not much to talk about with the Packers. BTW, how many posting names are you using? So many of you wingnuts post the same nonsense.

  2. Jones never cleared out his locker, so it was obvious he was coming back. I hope Vikings give him a chance to start at LG. Elflein does not look good. They also released a kicker from the practice squad. So if they can’t get Dillon on it, dare I say…….Korey Vedvik????

They probably played Dillon 7 snaps after the game was a blowout 28-0 to see what he could do & give him some experience. Right now we need more depth on OL since Elflein struggled again, where-as rookie TE Irv Smith played pretty good/blocked well.

  4. All the closet Brett Jones fans that were so outraged when he was cut can finally sleep easily tonight. They probably cut him because they didn’t want to guarantee his salary if he was on the Week 1 roster.

They must have figured they won’t need a fourth tight end if they’re only going to throw 10 passes a game.

GB has to at least consider picking up Jones, for a week if nothing else.

  6. Pettine didn’t even use any of his exotic blitzes against the Bears.

That will change this week. I would be very surprised with less than 6 sacks this week.

Kirk will be forced to play quarterback this week and that will play right into the Packers hands. If Vikings fan thinks that they are going to run the ball 36 times and beat the Packers🤣…good luck with that dream.👌

  7. Viking fans are gonna be surprised on Sunday.
Packers defense is retooled and looks very aggressive.
They have pass rush for the 1st time in years. That makes the secondary look a lot better.
You Viking fans better hope your offensive line is at the top of their game.
The Smiths will be head hunting on Cousins.

The Vikings have been telling everyone who would listen they were going to run the ball this year, a lot. They hired Gary freaking Kubiak for crying out loud. Atlanta played 8 sometimes 9 in the box and couldn’t do much about it. Try not to fall behind early, didn’t go well for the Falcons. 👍🏻

  9. On our stories as usual, darn they are some bored people. They talk about 2 pass rushers, we have 5, good luck with that. I look forward to an entertaining game, at least 3 pleas by Rodgers for stripped help & at least 2 incidences of said help & still probably another Viking win. Funny, when KC throws it a lot against GB, he lights them up. Be careful what you wish for. Lol

Highly doubtful cheesehead. Did you even watch the GB/Chi game? Rodgers is going to try passing to Davante Adams or Jimmy Graham all day (that is if his overpaid arms will even work). You guys have no RB to speak of (Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are busts and Dexter Williams is a rookie). And your number one corner… Kevin King… he’s missed 17 games in the past two seasons. If you lose a safety, Tramon Williams have to leave his natural position at corner to be a stop-gap. And the rest of your rookie secondary is going to get lit up by the one-two-three punch of Thielen, Diggs, and Rudolph… to say nothing of Cook, Beebe, and newly acquired Josh Doctson. The packers have one chance… the Vikings missing the plane to Green Bay.

I expect you to be shocked into reality.

  12. Glad to see that the Vikings get Jones back. I was wondering why they kept
Abdullah and cut Jones to begin with.

You are obviously not very old so I will fill you in to a fact the Vikings tromp all over the Packers when they had a Good Running Game. Packers are just not built that way. Their offense in a passing west coast style with a bit of air Corrielle downtown passes. Packers have a very hard time stopping the run period, end of story and nothing will wear out a defense quicker than a committed and successful running game,
I am sorry to say Rodgers does not have the arm he did before his 2 broken throwing shoulders.(remember Tony Romo?) I expect another grind it out ball and clock control, Vikings will open it up with a steady pace..Rodgers has played Barr scared every last games back, he is in Rodgers head.

  14. Good Indiana boy that Dillon. His high school is 25 minutes from me, small Single A school, the little town of Flora Indiana and surrounding are is rooting for you man!!!
I pray he does make the practice squd.

  15. Atlanta’s defense was supposed to be “revamped” as well. Should be a good game, the Packers don’t turn the ball over. Kirk has a tendency to, but he did own the Packers twice last year. Early season games are a crapshoot, this will be a good gauge for both defenses.

  16. CBS Sports Senior Columnist Pete Prisco has made his pick and comments on the game:

“This is one of the best games of the weekend. The Packers will be more rested after playing on Thursday. Their offense was awful against the Bears, but I think it’s better here. Both defenses are top notch. This could be a low-scoring game, but I think the home team will take it behind their defense.”

    Pete’s pick: Packers 19, Vikings 16

I agree with Pete on all but the score. I see the Packers winning this one by 6+.

Will be a good game and I know Lambeau will be electric at noon on Sunday.👏👍

  17. With 1,184 players cut across the league on cut-down day, 22% would have been OL (5 of 22). That’s roughly 269 players. Surely one or two of those would have been an upgrade over what Elflien is providing on Sundays and his backup Dakota Dozier (6 year Jet/backup). Surely Dru Samia or even Rashod Hill would be upgrades. Perhaps that is what Jones was brought back for.

With all these RBs, why not trade one for a young, talented, backup OG. Surely one of these RB starved teams would make that trade…Rick?

  18. Honestly the way Bradbury played and the way Elflein stunk up the joint, this is probably the best signing for the O-line. They will probably keep Bradbury in there but Elflein needs to go, yesterday. He is fat, out of shape, slow, beat like a drum.

  19. Sometimes I find your yammering interesting. I think you say this in jest but yes, this is a tremendous relief because matter of fact, Elflein is terrible and should be replaced by Brett Jones right now. Bradbury can also play guard so it may also work playing Jones at Center & Bradbury at guard but it’s pretty clear. Elflein is a bust as a starter. He will be a very good replacement piece but he’s not good enough for a team with SB aspirations.

  20. @freefromwhatyouare

    Delusional much?
Are you THAT convinced that GB defense is so great after ONE game?

You DO recall, don’t you that the guy you are wanting to “force to throw” threw for over 700 yards and 7 Tds in two games against that defense last year?

Are you SURE you really want that to happen?

If I were you, I’d be HOPING that the Vikings stubbornly stick with the running game (AND that the Pack defense can actually stop it) and that Cousins DOES NOT start throwing.

Because if the Pack defense is ANYTHING like last year, that won’t be pretty at all for the Packers.
