Anthony Harris tabbed as NFC defensive player of the week

Harrison Smith is the marquee name at safety for the Vikings, but his partner was the one in the spotlight after a 28-12 win over the Falcons in Week One.

Anthony Harris intercepted Matt Ryan in the first quarter to set up a Dalvin Cook touchdown run and he recovered a Devonta Freeman fumble in the second quarter that was followed by a Kirk Cousins touchdown run. Harris notched another interception of Ryan in the second half to kill a promising Falcons drive.

Harris also recorded five tackles and the entire package was enough for him to get the nod as the first NFC Defensive Player of the Week of the 2019 season.

Harris joined the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and started 17 games over his first four seasons. More performances like the one against the Falcons will get him close to matching that number this year.

  1. This guy is a huge upgrade from Andrew Sendejo. Harris continues to ball out every time he sees the field. He looks to contest the ball when it’s smart, rather than blow up the receiver. It’s led to an advantage in the turnover battle, and less unnecessary penalties. I liked watching dejo hit people, but man, those penalties came at the most costly times.

I look forward to seeing what a full season of Harris and Harry the hitman will look like. Well deserved, Anthony.

  2. Undrafted free agent. The Vikings are getting good at finding these guys. Often they are hungry and work hard to prove they belong. Congratulations Ant, well deserved.

  3. The packers wish they had a defensive back that is half as good as harris.

Well at least you’re not rushing to judgement after one game. Clearly you have the best safety in all the NFL….and even though your D gave up more points and yards than our secondary, of course we want all your guys!

Cory Littleton had a pick 14 tackles and a forced fumble. Should have been him and it’s not close

I’ll take 2 INTS and a fumble recovery any day. Thanks for your wonderful insight though.

He certainly would have been deserving as well, but I don’t think you can say it wasn’t close. Harris winning was probably partially a result of the dominant defensive performance the Vikings had. The Rams gave up 27 points, so Littleton’s great game didn’t do much to shut down the Panthers.

Those points and yards came in the fourth quarter after the game had been decided. They came against Kris Boyd and Mark Fields.

  7. Well deserved. I called this after his 2nd pick.

Agreed on the upgrade over Sendejo. Ant-man more ball-hawking.

I know man, just giving the guy some crap because he immediately had to bag on the Pack. Dude had a great game, no question.

  9. Well deserved — he really has been a great street free agent find and development. Sendejo was good, but Harris is better. I strongly suspect he will face a tougher test with Rodgers and the Pack this weekend.

Amazing a guy can kick around the league for years then breakout like this. Curious to see if he can keep it up.

He’s been a Viking since college. Never with another team.

Ahhh, read it wrong, thought they just picked him up this year.

  12. Harris has shown his talent over the past couple of seasons, and it was only a matter of time before he replaced Sendejo. He has a bright future ahead, and this will likely not be the last time he wins this award.

I can feel Aaron Rodgers shivering with fright.
    ______________

He didnt seem to be bothered against DPOY Troy Polomalu in the biggest game of his career. While he likely respects Harris he doesnt fear him.

  14. 3 turnovers and a blocked punt were parlayed into 28 points by the Vikings. Good on them. The Falcons won’t win many games by giving them away.

Welcome to week 2 and Lambeau Field now purples. We are very much looking forward to your time here.👍

Noon on Sunday can’t come soon enough.👏

  15. looking forward to as well freefromwhat, should be a great game.
This is probably the most balanced each team has been in quite some time.
Should be a great game. I’d prefer it in October when we had more film on Lefleurs offense, but game on.
