Akeem Spence feels bad for players still on the Dolphins

Getting released around the cut to 53 players is a tough pill for many players to swallow, but it has turned out pretty well for defensive tackle Akeem Spence.

Spence was released by the Dolphins in late August and that means he got to avoid being part of last Sunday’s 59-10 loss to the Dolphins. His week got better when his agent called him on Monday to tell him that the Eagles were interested in signing him after losing Malik Jackson to a foot injury.

“It just so happened, around 3 or 4, I’m taking my clothes to the cleaners, I see my agent called me,” Spence said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “He asked me, how would I like the opportunity to be on a Super Bowl contender? I said, ‘Who wouldn’t?'”

Spence called the Eagles a “first class” organization and said playing the Eagles system with former Dolphins defensive coordinator Matt Burke is “the perfect fit for me.” He suggested that playing in Miami in 2019 was on the extreme other end of the spectrum for his former teammates.

“I feel bad for ’em. . . . Those guys don’t have any control over what’s going on. . . . It’s one of those things, man, you shake your head on,” Spence said.

We’ve heard that some Miami players would like to join Spence as ex-Dolphins, but the Eagles and Dolphins will meet on December 1 should any Dolphins want to show Spence where he can stow his pity.

  1. These stories about Dolphins players scrambling for a way off the team are getting ridiculous. These players need to man up and start doing their jobs. The 53 guys on the roster should feel they have enough in their lockerroom to compete each week. If I was the GM of another team, I would think twice about acquiring a player who went running from their team, rather than compete in the face of adversity. They have numerous players on both sides of the ball who are former 1st-rd picks. These guys need to start pulling their weight.

  2. Spence will be cut as soon as someone else is available. Now I know why the Patriots just keep winning. They like players that can concentrate on football, and leave all the commentary to others.

  3. The guys on Miami are getting paid anywhere from roughly half a million rookie minimum to many millions to play there. They should be grateful they have a job that pays like that.

Yes, it is a job even though its also a game.

  4. “He asked me, how would I like the opportunity to be on a Super Bowl contender? ”
The Patriots!?!?! Alright! That’s what I’m talking about. You are the best agent ever!

    No, not the Patriots.

The Rams? That’s good too! I can make that work.
    No. No not the Rams.

You must mean the Chiefs then?
Narrator: This went on for a few more minutes before Philadelphia came up.

  5. It’s a shame what the Dolphins are doing! The NFL should step in. Brian Flores was hired and they’re giving him absolutely NO CHANCE to win! They are already on the clock for the 2020 draft after one game!

It’s hard enough as a coach, especially a minority one. To hire him and strip the team of all good players, then fire him, is totally “unsat” as we’d say in the Navy.

Sadly, the fight is fixed. The wounds are self-inflicted and in the end, they’ll say we gave Flores a shot but he couldn’t get it done. Jesus can’t fix this mess! Especially if they don’t want to be saved. Their owner seems more occupied raising money for Trump Jong Un than raising the hopes of his team!

Meanwhile, hotshots like Sean McVay are given every opportunity to succeed with the best players. Imagine what would have happened had the Rams gotten rid of their best offensive lineman and wide receiver before their first game, started a journeyman QB and didn’t care. That’s throwing in the towel before the first kickoff!

I don’t recall ever seeing a team demolish itself before the world’s eyes, before the first game, like the Dolphins are did. It’s organizational suicide by cyanide as the league watches—and does nothing.

I feel sorry for their fans who’ve paid for a Morton’s steak but are getting McDonalds McNuggets instead—for the same price. This is also why I REFUSE to wear team sports gear anymore. Why buy into their incompetence?

NFL, please intercede on behalf of the Dolphins’ fans. They deserve better!!! I’m glad this isn’t my Saints, but as a concerned fan, this sucks! And—I respect their awesome history. Too bad ownership doesn’t. Sadly, I’d be shocked if they won a game this season. What a sports tragedy!

Dan Marino and Bob Griese are “rolling over in their graves,” as Charles Barkley would say.

  6. I sure don’t remember all this talk when the Colts sucked for Luck. Okay we get it, the Dolphins will be bad this year. Stop looking for quotes from ex-players and unnamed sources.

And we feel sorry for you, because you can’t acknowledge the fact that the Eagles won a SB 2 years ago and won a playoff game last year, despite having the most injuries to key players in the NFL both years, and have an even better roster this year.

  9. This continues to sound like under Gase, the players ran the show. Brian Flores come in and wants to runs things like the Patriots do. The Pats hold players accountable. The Pats are about winning, and don’t really care about padding anyone stats. The culture is very, very different. There are some veterans players that don’t like the change. The challenge for Flores is to change the culture without destroying the ‘Fins. Some players will have to adjust, or be sent packing. It’s a process. It’s not an easy process for some veteran players who will resist to the end. It’s also a process that ownership and management has to be behind. It not, it will fail big time. The question become can Ross see this change through, or will he cave? The ‘Fins have been going nowhere since Ross bought the team.

  10. Hahahaha just reading these comments are laughable. Ton of fins fans who are clueless because they don’t know what winning looks like up close. Players have more control than the fans think. Flores got minkah Fitzpatrick embarrassed horribly on Sunday. Is minkah bad…NO but Flores set him up to look that way. Would Belicheck ever do that…NOPE. Vince Lombardi and George Halas would never win in today’s game. BB just signed the biggest spoilt child in the league and people are here saying Flores needs to teach players to be more humble. Winning is what teaches players to listen and be more humble towards their coach not sabotage and bad play calling. These players know a clueless coach when they meet one.

    …….

They did worse than what the Dolphins are “doing”… They did it for a decade + in St. Louis, and they got rewarded with a move to LA…. After the “Greatest Show On Turf” the following decade they had the worst record in the history of the NFL over a 10 year period.

Where was the outrage for the Browns going 1-31 in two years, or about the Colts tanking to get Luck, when Manning went down?

  12. Why are we shocked by a poor ‘phins team.

They scored a post season in 2016 but apart from that they’ve had a losing record every season since they were last division champs in ’08.

They’re just being a bit more strategic about things with trades and stuff.

At the end of the day, players gotta play.

If the coaches are selling them up the river from the sidelines, QB can call an audible, the defensive leader on the field can point out assignment changes to the coverage or someone can just start balling.

Locker room needs to come together instead of looking for the door.
