Former first-round pick Taco Charlton can’t find the field with Cowboys

The Cowboys continue to insist they are not disappointed in defensive end Taco Charlton. But how can they not be?

He was a first-round pick in 2017. He has four career sacks. He was a healthy scratch Sunday.

“Well, I think it speaks to our depth,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday. “I think it speaks to the talent level, and I think it speaks to the guys who did dress out, how they have earned that first game start. I think it’s more about the positive part of it than it is anything negative. I’m confident that . . . Charlton can line up out there with the starting group and play and play well.”

But Charlton hasn’t shown that yet, and his time with the Cowboys could be running out. It would not come as a surprise if the Cowboys traded him before the trade deadline, perhaps for a safety.

Charlton made three tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery in 19 snaps in the third preseason game. It was not enough for him to dress in the season opener.

“He’s just competing,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s competing for an opportunity to get a jersey on Sunday. That’s what we ask from our guys. You try to build a roster that’s competitive, so you’re competing to make the roster, make the 46 and then you compete for playing time. So he’s just in that mix right now.”

It would be one thing if Charlton weren’t a first-round draft pick. But he was, and Charlton has not lived up to expectations, which is why the Cowboys could move on if they can get something of value for him.

“The biggest thing we try to do is, it doesn’t matter where you came from; it just matters what you do,” Garrett said. “And so, you know, we’re going to try to play the best guys. We’re going to give everybody an opportunity to show that they can play and have a role, and choose the best one. The guys are going to help us be the best football team. Again, it doesn’t really matter where you come from, it’s just what you’re doing for us right now and how you can help us.”

  1. Unless his ankle is worse that they are saying something is going on. He outplayed at least a couple of the guys that were active during the preseason and still didn’t play…

  2. This has Rick Spielman written all over it. When he was Director of Personell with the Dolphins, he passed on Drew Brees…TWICE! Spent a high first round pick on Ted Ginn, Jr, then he left that mess for Minnesota and promptly used a high first round pick on quarterback Christian Ponder.

  3. Missed on that one… I was hoping for that Watt kid to be a Cowboy.
Look what he is doing now compared to Taco.

  4. His ankle is still sore. Cowboys should just let him play out his contract, sign with another team, collect the compensatory 3rd round pic. and move on.

  5. Was Watt still on the Board when Dallas picked Taco? This pick has Jerry written all over it.

  6. The coaching staff is done with him. If he couldn’t get on the field with Gregory and Quinn out he’s not getting on the field again.

  7. Not every pick will be a success. But in that draft, they landed:

    Chidobe Awuzie -Starting CB
    Jourdan Lewis – Starting Nickel
    Xavier Woods – Starting Safety

Also notable, Ryan Switzer (WR) starts for Pittsburgh (was traded). They’re also high on Noah Brown (WR), who’s currently injured but played last year.

In any draft, if you can land 1-2 day-one starters, it’s a great draft. Cowboys landed 4 total, 3 still on the team and key roles in their young thriving defense.

I’d also like to note – the team’s comments are true. It speaks to the teams depth. It was understood that Taco would be a developmental player, much like Trysten Hill his year. It would be great for him to get on the field, but if it means taking a better player out of the game, I’m happy with the way they’re handling the situation. He shouldn’t start just because he was a 1st round pick.

  8. Took Jerry this long to figure out Taco is a bust? Too bad they don’t play games on Taco Tuesday.

busto bustleton is who he is! Great pick Stephen!

I love how all these clowns are making fun of the Boys for this draft pick when they fail to realize that the Boys have been one of the best drafting teams in the NFL for the last 5 years…look it up how many of their draft picks are still with the team, every team makes a mistake but the Boys have made less mistakes than most teams.
