Tom Brady: We’re not thinking about anything but going 3-0

The Patriots have outscored their first two opponents 76-3, they’re stacked with talent on both sides of the ball and they’ve got the winningest coach/quarterback combo in NFL history, so it’s not a great surprise that the start to the season has some people wondering if they can run the table in the regular season.

It’s also not a great surprise that someone would pose a question about the chances of that to quarterback Tom Brady. That’s what happened during a Monday appearance on WEEI and Brady’s answer was equally unsurprising to those who have followed these Patriots over the years.

“So, I’m not thinking about anything more than 3-0 because that’s the only thing that matters,” Brady said. “That’s what we got this week. Today, wake up and I’m thinking about the Jets and how they’re going to attack us and how we need to attack them. It’s going to ebb and flow over the course of the whole season. There are big challenges ahead and to take your eye off what’s really important is a disservice to the team and we’re not doing that.”

The Patriots haven’t been challenged in the first two weeks of the season and the Bills are the only team on the upcoming schedule — home for the Jets, at Buffalo and Washington, home for the Giants and at the Jets — that’s actually won a game this season, so this may not be the last time Brady’s going to be asked about the chances of making another run at an undefeated season.

  1. Tom Brady is successful because he knows the value of self-discipline.
You can’t be successful and self-indulgent at the same time.

Want a counter-example to illustrate the point?
Ok, take a look at Cam Newton.

Pats are pretty beat up on the o-line right now. The backups have been doing a good job, Scarnecchia is a magician, and Brady excels at getting rid of the ball quickly, but continued bad luck with o-line health could bite them down the road.

  3. Its a long season. We just saw 2 of the premier QBs knocked out, Brees for weeks and Big Ben for the year.

The Pats Oline had I think one starter playing yesterday by a few minutes into the game, with 2nd and 3rd string tackles playing with Cannon out. Isiah Wynn knocked out early in the game with a foot injury that there’s no update on.

Scar has a big job ahead of him to keep this Oline going and playing well. Hopefully Wynn isn’t out for long and Cannon will be back next week.

Brady is right to focus only on the Jets. They’re up next no other opponent currently matters. If there are many more injuries to the Oline he may be running for his life half the season even with Scar coaching them up.

Undefeated means 19-0. As every Patriots fan knows well, 16-0 is meaningless.
    ——————————-

Certainly not “meaningless” Even in their 18-1 season they still won more games than the undefeated Dolphins team

But true in the sense the Pats covet Superbowl wins above all else.

  5. Please. The media needs to stop that. SMFH. The Pats care about Super Bowls. I bet that 2007 team would have had a loss in the REGULAR SEASON than in that Super Bowl. Please. Brady cares about rings. Nothing else.

  6. They’d take away my Bills fan card if I actually liked Brady, and I don’t, but I have immense respect for him & the way he approaches the game. He’s really a paragon for how we all should approach our jobs.

I hope the Bills can give him a good fight in a couple of weeks.

    Schedule is a joke
    ————————————

True they have the easiest schedule but last year they had one of the hardest and KC had one of the easiest. You do realize the schedule is set by a formula and all you can do is beat the teams they put in front of you. You still have to beat the best to win the Super Bowl.

  8. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves: The Pats have beaten 2 winless teams, including one that could very well go 0-16 this year. They won’t really get tested until November (Ravens, Eagles, Cowboys, Chiefs). Until then, they may as well be playing Preseason games. If they’re undefeated at the end of November, then we can start talking 19-0.

  9. Cant imagine why they make the playoffs every season, what a crap division and for a team that’s supposed to have a tough schedule they never do, 1 or 2 teams and that’s it, then home during the playoffs. Too funny. Not really going to prepare them for the playoffs playing powder puffs. Going to think all teams are that easy

    Schedule is a joke

Patriots play the Browns, Ravens, Eagles, Cowboys, Texans and Chiefs in consecutive weeks this year. Who else do you want them to play? And please do not say Indianapolis.

Pats record against 5 other divs is the same or better than their AFCE record (the AFCN & AFCS in particular are softer. Only the 2 west divs keep the Brady-Pats human, at least in part due to travel of course (and Denver altitude) but even then Brady’s win ratio is at 2-1.

  12. Schedule is a joke
    ——————
they play the toughest schedule every year but often do make a joke out of it, particularly teams outside their division.

I would have said look at the Steelers as a counter-example, but Newton works well, too.
