With Drew Brees undergoing surgery Wednesday to repair a torn tendon in his thumb, the Saints are re-signing quarterback J.T. Barrett to the practice squad, Tom Pelissero of the NFL reports.

The Saints waived Barrett on Aug. 1. The Seahawks signed him Aug. 10 but waived him out of the preseason Aug. 31.

Barrett signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2018 after a tryout at their rookie minicamp. He was cut from and re-signed to the practice squad 23 times last season, according to Amie Just of nola.com.

Barrett, 24, has never made the 53-player roster.

  1. So Agent Barrett successfully makes it back home with Seattle’s playbook to hand over to General Payton. This is more brilliant than Spygate.

“Agent Barrett” didn’t seem to be picking up the secret playbook very well in Seattle when he had one in his hands. He had to turn in those secret plans when the Seahawks hit the ejector button in his Aston Martin DB5.
I doubt Mr. Barrett learned or remembers enough to pass on much of real value to the Saints. Considering their backup QB choices, anything they may gain is a poor and vastly one-sided trade-off for losing Drew Brees.
I’m not saying New Orleans can’t or won’t find a way to beat Seattle. But if signing “Agent Barrett” for the role of 007 is the real endgame here then I’d say the plan reeks more of desperation than brilliance.
