Steelers will “anchor” Minkah Fitzpatrick at safety for now

During his year-plus in Miami, Minkah Fitzpatrick lined up at a variety of spots on the Dolphins defense.

The Steelers don’t plan to employ Fitzpatrick in that manner early in his time with the team. Fitzpatrick was acquired in a Monday night trade and head coach Mike Tomlin outlined some of the team’s plans for him at a Tuesday press conference.

Tomlin said that the plan is for Fitzpatrick to play free safety, which was occupied by Sean Davis before he went on injured reserve Tuesday.

“He will be playing the safety position,” Tomlin said, via Will Selva of NFL Media. “We’ll quickly get him up to speed. He’s a sharp guy, getting to know in the draft process. In the short term, we’re going to anchor him down to one position.”

Tomlin said the Steelers scouted Fitzpatrick heading into the 2018 draft as they were in the market for a safety and liked what they saw, but Fitzpatrick was off the board with the 11th pick. The Steelers took Terrell Edmunds with the 28th overall pick and now both safeties will be in the same secondary

  1. Dealt two players because they’re malcontents, then traded for a malcontent from another team just a couple weeks later? 👌

  2. No the whole point of him leaving Miami was that they had him playing every spot in the secondary. They had him lining up at both safety spots and Nicole corner in the slot. He wanted Mimi to specify one position they saw him playing going forward so he could focus all his attention coming into the league as a young player all at one spot and try and perfect that position as learning 3 to 4 spots at same time is difficult as all 4 spots have totally different techniques.

  3. He wants to play slot, he was upset in Miami because they were plying him at safety. Even Minkah’s mom spoke out about him not being built to play safety. This will be interesting.

  4. In an era where teams tank I would have thought the Steelers might have considered it given the circumstances. Instead they are busy working to be competitive. I respect that.

  5. Wow, always a lot of Steeler haters. First of all, Fitzpatrick is going to play FS in Pittsburgh, replacing (prob. for good) Sean Davis.
And my understanding is that Fitzpatrick’s issue with the Dolphins was NOT playing safety, but being used at different positions. He won’t be doing that with the Steelers.

  6. “They had him lining up at both safety spots and Nicole corner in the slot.”

Are you sure it was at Nicole corner? How about Jasmine corner, or Shiela corner?

    Lolz

  7. Miami had him mostly at SS this year, not FS which is his natural position.

All the switching around to different spots last year didn’t help him very much, Pitt did the same to Sean Davis in his first year. Davis was gone next year anyway, where Fitzpatrick’s contract is in it’s 2nd year with a 5th year option. Fitz is already better than Davis. Looks like a good move for Pittsburgh.

    Go Steelers!

  8. So they spent two first round picks in three years on safeties. I doubt that happens very often.

  9. He didn’t want to play safety. At all. Made that abundantly clear to Flores and the Dolphins’ management. And now that he’s gone, he’s suddenly OK with it? Give us a break. He should just man up and admit that he whined his way out of Miami because they’re having a terrible year. I’d respect that more than using this not playing safety excuse, given that’s exactly what’s happening now that he’s with Pittsburgh.

  10. @C. M. & soflaken – no he didnt want to play multiple positions and be moved around on defense. I’ve seen nothing of him ever saying he doesnt want to play safety if it’s the only position but that wasnt the case in miami.

Steelers starting defense now features 7 1st rounders…

    Crazy.
    ——-
What’s crazy is that means they were starting 6 before and they still gave up 61 points in 2 games.

  12. After watching him in that Ravens game chase their receivers into the end zone as a Miami fan I’m not feeling as bad losing Fitz and getting the projected high #1 draft pick. Tomlin might want to use a different catch word when introducing Fitzpatrick. Anchor may not be word of choice. On the other hand Fitz gets another shot at Baltimore in just a few weeks in Pittsburg.

  13. Steelers should of talked to the Giants about getting Eli Manning since they are benching him. Just for this season bc we are not done for the season with the afc north like it is.

  14. If the Steelers can start communicate better on defense, they’ll be playing a whole lot better with the addition of fitz. Bush is still talking his rookie hits but he’ll get better.

  15. The Steelers’ front office must’ve been Le’Veon’s supplier because this move makes ZERO sense. There are a handful of decent safeties who are street FA’s, yet a team that’s going nowhere decides to give up a Top 10 pick for one of the least important positions on the field. Only Edge, O tackle, CB and QB are worthy of first round capital. There’s a reason that it’s the lowest paid defensive position. But I could be wrong. Maybe by adding a 7th former first rounder to the vaunted Steel Curtain, they’ll finally stop giving up 30 points a game.

  16. Honestly, Fitzpatrick doesn’t care what position he plays. He just wants to be on a winning team.

    Oh wait!…

The last thing Tomlin and Butler want is are versatile players that can play multiple positions with their vanilla zone blitz defense that hasn’t changed since the early 1990’s under LeBeau and TB12 has killed since forever. I think this will be the 10th first rounder on the Steelers D, Fitzpatrick is the missing piece, hahahahahaha!
