Steelers could make changes at wide receiver

Steelers wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster said he didn’t think the team’s offense would change much, in the transition from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to backup Mason Rudolph.

But there could be a personnel change at another position as well.

Via Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, coach Mike Tomlin seemed baffled by the recent struggles of starting wideout Donte Moncrief.

I don’t know what to make of it,” coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday. “I know we haven’t been able to depend on him to this point. He’s got some challenges and we have some challenges moving forward.”

Through two games, Moncrief has three receptions for 7 yards. He also has five drops, which is hardly what they were hoping for when he signed a two-year, $9 million contract this offseason.

He was pulled from last week’s game after a drop led to an interception, after four drops the week before against the Patriots.

Tomlin was asked if the veteran would get a chance to work through it and replied: “We’ll see.”

Turning to James Washington (Rudolph’s college teammate) and rookie Diontae Johnson would be the obvious moves if they decide they can no longer trust Moncrief.

  1. Bench Moncrief, and let the young guys play and see what they have for the future. Expectations are already low for the rest of the season so use this opportunity to see what they have and can build around for the future.

This is the Steelers’ fan definition of a BEAST. Hahahahahahaha.

  3. It’s time to face the reality that the antonia brown trade
made the pittsburgh steelers a weak and predictable team.

Juju IS NOT a great #1 wide receiver.

Juju lacks explosivity and is too slow to take over games.

  4. Steelers will be fine. To all the haters, we are not the Browns or the Bills, the Packers of the ’80’s. Adult males who pretend to be professionals have let the Steelers down, worst part is the money they’ve wasted on these jokers. At this point, after over 40 years of being a Steeler fan, we have just as good a chance to make the SB as any other team out there. Ditch Montcrief as much as it’ll hurt financially and re-sign Rogers

  5. Juju looked very good when AB was drawing the double and triple coverage and was an after thought in the D-coordinator game planning; the whole plan was how to stop AB (this also helped Connor look like a good RB), now Juju looks like what he is an at best 3rd or 4th receiver and easily covered.

  6. Why all the hate on Juju. I’d love him on the Patriots. He’s got #1 receiver talent and he’s super young. Took AB 3-4 years to develop to where Juju is now. And AB had better talent around him. Can’t judge Juju for his game against NE. Gilmour is arguably the best shut down corner in the league. Very rare to find a receiver have success going against him.

  7. Yo,

Let’s ease up on Moncrief a bit. He got the drops out of his system early.

He’s due for some great catches now and couldn’t possibly drop another, right?

    Sincerely,

    Limas Sweed

  8. Looking at the next 4 games, the Steelrs could find themselves 1-5. I can’t believe I just tryped that, 2 years ago that would have been unthinkable.

Actually, at 0-2, and with a back up QB, a terrible FA WR, a lousy defense and a crummy coaching staff, you don’t.
