PFT’s Week Three picks

Getty Images

Last week was not a good week. And not just because of the quarterback injuries.

MDS and I stunk it up with the picks competition, with MDS going 8-8 and yours truly sliding under .500, at 7-9.

For the year, he’s 18-14 and I’m 17-15.

This week, we shoot for redemption. After disagreeing on seven games last week, we’re in lock step this week.

For our takes and our picks, scroll away.

Titans at Jaguars

MDS’s take: This season has the potential to turn very ugly for the Jaguars, who seem very, very far removed from the team that was in the AFC Championship Game the season before last. The Titans will make it three losses in three games for the Jaguars.

MDS’s pick: Titans 20, Jaguars 17.

Florio’s take: The Titans play up and down to the level of the competition. That hints at a loss on Thursday night to a Jaguars team that has gone 3-13 since beating the Patriots last September to move to 2-0. But if Mike Vrabel and company can stymie Baker Mayfield, they can carve up Gardner the Ginsu Minshew.

Florio’s pick: Titans 17, Jaguars 13.

Bengals at Bills

MDS’s take: I’m not sure the Bills are all that good, but I am sure they have an easy schedule that could easily put them in the playoffs. They get their third straight win against a bad team on Sunday.

MDS’s pick: Bills 24, Bengals 20.

Florio’s take: The Bills are for real! (Until they play the Patriots.)

Florio’s pick: Bills 27, Bengals 17.

Dolphins at Cowboys

MDS’s take: Picking the Dolphins to lose is like picking the sun to rise in the east and set in the west.

MDS’s pick: Cowboys 37, Dolphins 7.

Florio’s take: Even Leon Lett couldn’t blow this one.

Florio’s pick: Cowboys 35, Dolphins 6.

Broncos at Packers

MDS’s take: I’m not sold on Matt LaFleur’s offense meshing with Aaron Rodgers‘ talents just yet. But Green Bay should move to 3-0 against a bad Broncos team.

MDS’s pick: Packers 17, Broncos 10.

Florio’s take: At least this loss won’t happen without the Broncos being screwed on multiple occasions during the game-winning drive.

Florio’s pick: Packers 24, Broncos 13.

Falcons at Colts

MDS’s take: The Falcons feel to me like a team that missed its championship window and is now just struggling to keep its head above water. The Colts will win at home and keep pace in the AFC South.

MDS’s pick: Colts 28, Falcons 24.

Florio’s take: Can Adam Vinatieri make his kicks? Even if he can’t, the home team should be able to pull this one off.

Florio’s pick: Colts 24, Falcons 21.

Ravens at Chiefs

MDS’s take: This is one of the best games of the year, and I wish it were happening later in the season because I think it’s going to have major playoff implications. Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson will duel many times through the years, and Mahomes will win this one.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 30, Ravens 27.

Florio’s take: It’s a rematch of an epic regular-season game from 2018, and a possible preview of a 2019 postseason matchup.

Florio’s pick: Chiefs 31, Ravens 27.

Raiders at Vikings

MDS’s take: The Raiders have played better than most people were expecting, but I can’t see them winning on the road in Minnesota.

MDS’s pick: Vikings 24, Raiders 17.

Florio’s take: This season already has a win-their-home-games-lose-their-road-games vibe for the Vikings.

 Florio’s pick: Vikings 27, Raiders 17.

Jets at Patriots

MDS’s take: Luke Falk against Bill Belichick’s defense is going to get ugly. Very ugly.

MDS’s pick: Patriots 42, Jets 0.

Florio’s take: Whatever happened to parity?

Florio’s pick: Patriots 42, Jets 17.

Lions at Eagles

MDS’s take: The Lions’ defense has played seven good quarters this season, although wearing down against the Cardinals in Week One caused them to tie a game they should have won. I think Carson Wentz is going to struggle, but Matthew Stafford will struggle too against an Eagles defensive coordinator who knows him well, Jim Schwartz. This is a low-scoring game that the home team takes with a late field goal.

MDS’s pick: Eagles 10, Lions 7.

Florio’s take: The Eagles have plenty of injured players, but Carson Wentz is healthy and that’s good enough to make the difference.

Florio’s pick: Eagles 27, Lions 20.

Panthers at Cardinals

MDS’s take: As I pick this I don’t know if Cam Newton is playing, and so the safe bet is the Cardinals.

MDS’s pick: Cardinals 24, Panthers 20.

Florio’s take: It’s Kyler Murray vs. Kyle Allen. Who? Exactly.

Florio’s pick: Cardinals 24, Panthers 20.

Giants at Buccaneers

MDS’s take: Tampa Bay’s run defense has played very well this year, which means Saquon Barkley may not have a lot of room to run, and it’s going to be on Daniel Jones to make plays in his first start. I don’t think he’s ready just yet.

MDS’s pick: Buccaneers 20, Giants 13.

Florio’s take: The Daniel Jones era begins with a bit of a thud.

Florio’s pick: Buccaneers 24, Giants 13.

Texans at Chargers

MDS’s take: By trading for Laremy Tunsil the Texans showed they are going all-in for this season, but I haven’t seen a Super Bowl contender in the first two weeks. I see the Chargers bouncing back from a disappointing loss in Detroit and winning on Sunday.

MDS’s pick: Chargers 21, Texans 17.

Florio’s take: Melvin Ingram won’t have to worry about getting put on his ass like he did two weeks ago against the Colts, that’s for sure.

Florio’s pick: Chargers 24, Texans 17.

Saints at Seahawks

MDS’s take: Seattle’s defense is going to give Teddy Bridgewater hell. The Seahawks improve to 3-0.

MDS’s pick: Seahawks 20, Saints 14.

Florio’s take: Even with Drew Brees, it would have been a tall order for the Saints to win in Seattle.

Florio’s pick: Seahawks 29, Saints 17.

Steelers at 49ers

MDS’s take: I respect the Steelers trading for Minkah Fitzpatrick, rather than giving up on their season after Ben Roethlisberger‘s injury. But the 49ers’ defense has played very well this season, and Mason Rudolph is going to have a long day.

MDS’s pick: 49ers 27, Steelers 17.

Florio’s take: It’s not quite Correction Sunday. But it’s close.

Florio’s pick: 49ers 27, Steelers 23.

Rams at Browns

MDS’s take: Baker Mayfield is going to struggle to pass accurately with Aaron Donald in his face all day. The Rams should win this one comfortably.

MDS’s pick: Rams 30, Browns 20.

Florio’s take: The Rams have quickly ditched the Super Bowl hangover, and they’re looking like a team that could end up right back there.

Florio’s pick: Rams 30, Browns 24.

Bears at Washington

MDS’s take: Washington just looks like a mess to me, and even against a Bears offense that can’t do much, it probably won’t be a competitive game.

MDS’s pick: Bears 21, Washington 7.

Florio’s take: The Bears needed good luck and bad calls to beat the Broncos. The Bears won’t need either of those to win in Washington.

Florio’s pick: Bears 23, Washington 9.

  2. For some reason I think you guys are wrong on Daniel Jones. Got a feeling he’s going to surprise some people this weekend.

  3. I really want to pick the Ravens this weekend. There’s been very little discussion about Cam Erving playing LT because Eric Fisher is hurt. That’s a potentially huge difference maker in this game. Couple that with potential thunderstorms on Sunday, and this game could go either way.

    Still, Patty Mahomes will be the single best player on that field by a wide margin. Ravens keep it close, but still lose.

    Chiefs 24
    Ravens 20

  4. Falcons over Colts – the Falcons showed much improvement from week 1 to week 2 and I see them getting their groove.. Colts have played well but not unbeatable well..

    Panthers over Cardinals – Panthers have much to prove after being embarrassed before the nation losing to the Bucs.. Cardinals still in building mode..

    Giants over Buccaneers – The Bucs history tells that they usually make backups and rookies look good.. If Jones is truly talented enough to replace Manning then he should surprise some… After 50+ games, JW will likely help their defense to score as well.

    Seahawks over Saints – its hard to beat the Seahawks at home even with Brees… whoever starts will be a downgrade from Brees so there will be much pressure on him.

  5. “Florio’s take: Whatever happened to parity?

    In the truly pathetic AFCE?? C’mon Florio, you’re asking for a lot!

  6. The Redskins are not that bad, they are 8-8, 7-9 type team. They are scoring touchdowns, they will get better.

  7. Wow! 17 points for a backup QB against a defense that has given up just 6 points in its last three games?? Mighty generous, Mike. Mighty generous

  10. The Seahawks are over-rated and lucky. They beat the Bengals, who everyone thinks sucks, by 1 at home. They beat the Steelers by 2 after Big Ben went out with an injury and now they draw a Breese-less Saints team. They’ll be 0-4 vs the Niners and Rams this year.

    Or, the Bengals are lucky Seattle had zero tape on their new head coach and lost by just 1, and the Ste(A)lets were lucky Burger got hurt because he looked awful and that game should have been a 30 point Seahawk drubbing. Seattle will go 3-1 against the Rams and Clara Clowns this season. See how that works

    Maybe just pick the upsets? Each take a turn predicting a game, with no repeats allowed? Anything would be an improvement.

  18. Keep sleeping on the Lions. Lions win on the deep ball early and often. Jarred Davis makes his return and sacks Wentz 2 times. Philly fans then beat up anybody not wearing an Eagles jersey.

    You sound like a Fantasy Football player that only played soccer growing up.

    Wait though… isn’t the Niners game less scary because they “draw” a Big-Ben-less Steelers team this week? Didn’t the Niners also get a win against the same Bengals team that “sucks”?

    Once Drew Brees went down in the Rams game, the Rams pulled away. Brees getting hurt helped the Rams get a win too…

    Who is lucky again? I would say that everyone getting wins is lucky…for whatever reason. Winning games in the NFL is hard.

    Well if we’re using a two week sample to judge divisions the AFCE at .500 is ahead of the AFCN and AFCS and tied with the AFCW. In the NFC the AFCE is better than the south and the east and behind the north and the west. So. Out of 8 divisions the AFCE is tied for third. But like I said, 2 weeks in seems early to start making excuses for New England’s 20 years of dominance.

    Because reading in fundamental. He said “won’t…..without” aka, a double negative. Meaning this loss would AGAIN need the refs to screw it up.

  24. Seattle needs to get better protecting Wilson, need Carson to stop fumbling. After that, Wilson can tear apart defenses. Lately Wilson has gone to short timed passes which have allowed Wilson to earn an effective offense.

    Future game to be a concern, Rams with Aaron Donald getting in Wilson’s face consistently. Otherwise they should do fine. Possible that Donald is down with back problems in that game.

    Defensively they need to stop biting on the flea flicker. Getting Ziggy Ansah on the field should help, as well as getting Neiko Thorpe back from injury. Both should be back by the time they play the Rams.

    Poona Ford is injured as well. Defense is just hitting its stride.

    If by any chance Seattle lands Jalen Ramsey, this defense will be extremely tough to score on.

    Offense is definitely the issue currently that needs to get fixed.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I beg to differ.
    1. Florio’s an admitted fan of the Minnesota team (and it’s important to note here that there’s quite a difference between actual Viking fans and purples).
    2. Florio’s “take” is admittedly hard to decipher but if you read it carefully, he’s saying the Broncos are going to get screwed by the refs… three full days before the game even starts (the double negative of “won’t happen without” creates a positive).
    3. If you’ve read this site for any length of time, you know the purples cry about the officiating every week, about games their team isn’t even in, before the games even happen… which is exactly what Florio did here. It’s perfectly purple behavior (which I say again, is a far cry from actual Viking fan behavior).
    I apologize to any actual Viking fans that read it.
  32. Seahawks lost only 4 fumbles in all of 2018 through ball security. Hawks have lost 3 fumbles this season. 2 fumbles deep in Hawk territory gifted the Steelers 14 pts. One at 3 yd line. Other at the 20.
    Hawks out gained Pitt 425 yds to 261, so those 2 turnovers, which you can’t count on, contributed to a closer score than the actual game indicated by play on the field.
    Every season, Seattle closes strong after a slow start. With Ziggy Ansah and JReed, who had 10.5 sacks in ’18, will return in week 7, the team will improve. Add in the chemistry that will improve between Wilson and DK and even Will Dissly and I see Seattle improving per usual in the back half of the season.
    If the Hawks start 3-0, they should have no problem making the playoffs. 8-5 finish and it’s 11-5. Not too difficult.
  33. September 19, 2019 at 12:45 pm
    Another factor in KC’s favor is that Jimmy Smith is out. As a Ravens fab I agree with your reasoning, but not the final score. No way does KC’s defense hold the Ravens to 20.
    KC 38
    Ravens 34
    If Ravens see KC in January, with a healthy secondary, Ravens will win and have the thrill and joy of playing in Foxboro.
    I’m with you. I believe Denver is way better than 0-2 would indicate. And Miller and Chubb having blanks in the stats columns is completely ridiculous. I also worry the youngsters on the Packer defense might fall victim to their own press.
  36. Here’s a prediction: The Jets young QB Luke Falk will leave he field ‘not under his own power’and they’ll be onto their 4th string QB.
  37. “Whatever happened to parity?”
    Goodell, Polian and the general softening of the game.
    It used to be if you had a mediocre QB you could make up for it and compete if you had a pretty good defense. Now with what defenders can do gutted, unless you have a premier QB the team is going to have big problems.
  38. Patriots 38 Jets 3 this will be ugly Pats passing game to Brown and Edelman will be off the charts and Falk will get owned by the defense. Chiefs 31 Ravens 23 Jackson won’t do enough to out duel Mahomes. Bears 20 Skins 10 low scoring ugly ball contest with Bears defense being the difference.
  39. For anyone who is wondering look at their overall records, 18-14 and 17-15, and check stuff like pig skin pick em and you’ll see how bad those records are. Take this for what it is, a guess and a small nugget info they find relevant for fun.
  44. MDS calling for back to back shut outs from the Patriots defense. My fantasy team would appreciate this coming true.
  45. The refs did everything they could last week to make sure ‘Bart Starr Day’ wasn’t ruined and they’ll give the Broncos more than enough favorable calls to make up for last weeks fake roughing the passer call that cost the Denver a game. Broncos win 13-10. Rodgers and the little guy will be screaming at each other midway through the game again at some point. You guys should be thanking Cousins for the INT, otherwise the headline would’ve been Rodgers and the little guy choke away a 21-0 lead.
    Offensive Line is vastly improved and getting better
    MN had THREE times as many penalties yds as GB, including three OFFENSIVE PI calls…
    Committed FOUR Turnovers
    Missed two kicks
    And lost by a grand total of 5 points to an undefeated team on the road!
    Most teams would have lost by 15 under those conditions
    For anyone who is wondering look at their overall records, 18-14 and 17-15, and check stuff like pig skin pick em and you’ll see how bad those records are. Take this for what it is, a guess and a small nugget info they find relevant for fun.
    You are right about their records. And they’re not even picking against the spread!!
  48. Wow what happened to Monday night football? Three stinkers in a row. Chiefs/Ravens should be a prime time game. Who comes up with these schedules?
  49. I’m beginning to think Mike should just pick Vikings, Packer and Patriots games, as those seem to be the only ones anyone cares to comment about. I think if he stopped posting Vikings picks, certain cheesers would end up wandering around the streets aimlessly muttering to themselves with nothing else to do.
  50. > The refs did everything they could last week to make sure ‘Bart Starr Day’ wasn’t ruined
    It’s now day 4 since the Vikings lost to Green Bay and the excuses are still pouring in.
    Hint: If you don’t pound your chest all week, you won’t need to find excuses when you’re wrong.
  51. The offensive line for the Vikings can run block (hold) pretty well. Huge missed hold on that 75yard run. I watched it again last night.
    The Packers lead the league in QB pressures.
    So either they have a really great defense or your offensive line is trash.
    So, the Skins put up 27 vs the Eagles and 21 vs the Cowboys but you have them putting up 7 and 9 vs the Bears LoL.
    Yea I do too the Bears Defense is a way better defense than the eagles or the cowboys period not even close. Bears will win this game easily…
    Bears 31
    Redskins 10
  53. Walk me through this logic. Superbowl the Rams get 3 points. Opening week the Steelers get 3 points. Last week the Fins get 0 points. This week the Jets get 17. This makes sense to only one person and he works on this site.
    Keep sleeping on the Lions. That defense is legit and they finally have no choice but to unleash Kerryon
    HAHA your defense isn’t anything special period. Eagles roll 31-13 period, so funny to see Lions fans early in the season so much hope and hype only to disappear by Thanksgiving!
    Until the packers get a real defense they won’t win another game!
    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
    NFC North Defense
    1-Green Bay
    2-Chicago
    3-MINNESOTA
  56. You’re giving the winless Broncos too much credit to say they will go in to Lambeau and lose to the undefeated Packers by 7 and 11 pts. Packers 35 Broncos 7
