Patriots promote German fullback Jakob Johnson

Jakob Johnson played last year for the Stuttgart Scorpions, and when he signed with the Patriots this offseason, it was with a roster exemption that the NFL gave them to help develop international players. But he’s not just a developmental prospect anymore.

With starting fullback James Develin injured, the Patriots have called up Johnson to the 53-man roster to take his place.

Johnson grew up in Germany and played there last year, but he played college football at Tennessee, so he has plenty of experience.

New England had an open spot on its 53-man roster after the release of Antonio Brown.

  1. From what we saw in the pre-season, this kid is a great blocker especially on the edge. Great story and a developmental program worth keeping our eyes on.

  2. I didn’t even get a chance …… and here come the armchair GM’s & HC’s of the world telling us all how great every player is that puts on a uniform in Assachusetts

  3. Germany has I think the largest American football following and own league after the US. We will see more players from Germany in the future. Pats already have a history there with Sebastian Vollmer

  4. Real happy to see this kid get his opportunity to show his stuff….
Next man up once again!!! AB leaving actually is the gift that keeps giving, he owned up a spot in an area of need!!!
    Go Pats!!!

  5. Canada’s really the biggest outside the US if you accept the closeness of the codes. After that in pure fan numbers its Mexico then Brazil before Germany and Britain. In Germany some of the old NFL Europe teams sort-of continued on in their own mini league. Britain has an amateur league but a crucial change in the UK in recent years is a developing college league.

  6. Develin IS a big loss…..that’s why it was BRILLIANT of the Patriots to not put this kid on the exempt list come roster cut downs allowing him to become an eligible free agent to be able to actually play this year as opposed to just practice with the Pats all year….. the Pats obviously saw something they liked in him & signed him to their practice squad for quality depth should what happened to Develin actually happen….
Now it’s NEXT MAN UP once again…that’s whats so awesome about this team, Bill just keeps moving pieces like in a chess match & keeps moving them until the SuperBowl & CHECKMATE

  7. If this headline said the Colts signed this guy instead, it would be all patriots fans on here laughing and making jokes about signing some clown from Germany, but since it is the Patriots, he is the greatest signing of all time.

Indicates that Devlin is out more than just a week.

Actually it really doesnt, not even a little bit.

Its a neck injury, and where those are concerned its better to give them extra time. So I am actually hoping thats exactly what it means. Get Devlin right again all the way before putting him back out there.

It probably stems from the fact that the Colts have been a joke since deflategate. Maybe I can explain it this way. New Englanders never forget who did them wrong– it’s in the DNA. Sometimes, when I feel a little bit down, I think of the swinging gate play or maybe the butt fumble from the Jets game (another cry baby organization). It brings me right out of it. The harassment from Pats fans will never stop–just accept it my friend.

Did you watch this guy play in the pre-season?

I hope you are wrong but fear you are correct. James Devlin is the consummate Patriot, without the glory and headlines. He quietly makes their team very unpredictable and helps them score in many ways.

    I hope gets well soon.

  12. If a person is caught cheating they are known as a cheater. Brady and Belichick are cheaters. And Belichick us 0-2 vs Shula.

  13. Shula was the head coach of the Colts in 1969 when the MIAMI DOLPHINS WERE CAUGHT CHEATING and TAMPERING AND STEALING that coach from another NFL team while that coach was under contract. The CHEATING DOLPHINS had to forfeit a 1st round draft pick because of their flagrant CHEATING. Shula was also known for tampering with field conditions to give the Dolphins an unfair advantage. More CHEATING by the DOLPHINS.

The Patriots never cheated because the Patriots don’t have to. A few people are slow to get updated news and they continue to repeat the same nonsense that has already been disproven countless times.

I’m a Patriot fan so I hope you are right, but I don’t think they called up Jakob Johnson for 1 week figuring that he’d clear waivers right after so he could go back to their practice squad. If they do that, I don’t think he clears waivers.

  15. This is how BB is smarter than the rest of the league. The AFC east was chosen to sponsor the International pathway players program. They were given Johnson. They could have kept him on the practice squad and have 11 players(instead of 10) but they did not designate him as such. So they could call him up if needed. With Develin getting hurt, they called him up.

Now let’s compare him to Cristian Wade(bills). He is the 11th man on their practice squad but cannot be called up. With Devin Singletary being hurt they could not call Ward up(a player that has been practicing with them the whole time) to add depth. Just like Johnson, wade had shown flashes of potential in the preseason. But Johnson can actually Help in game situations. Wade can only practice.

  16. @carloswlassiter I doubt their worried about him passing thru waivers since any team was free to sign him to their active roster while he was on the patriots practice squad and no one did.
