Jalen Ramsey calls out sick on Monday

Cornerback Jalen Ramsey wants a trade away from the Jaguars, but the team doesn’t seem to be inclined to take any offers they might have received at this point.

As a result, it appears Ramsey does not feel inclined to join the Jaguars for practice. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Ramsey called the Jaguars on Sunday and told them he won’t be attending Monday’s practice because he’s sick. Schefter adds that Ramsey may not be at practice all week.

Ramsey may be ill, but the timing makes it difficult not to think this is the kind of sick day that led Ferris Bueller to run afoul of Principal Ed Rooney.

If so, it’s a rare case of a player deciding to hold himself out of work after opening the season in the lineup. It would also be a sign that there’s not much hope of smoothing over the differences that led to the trade request in the first place.

There will surely be more developments to come on the Ramsey front on Monday and in the days to come. We’ll have them all for you right here.

  1. Very professional. Some of these guys are no different than my 9 year child. About the same level of intelligence and professionalism.

  2. When Jags lost to Patriots in AFC Championship game two years ago, 3 Jags players did not mingle and shake hands at midfield after the game ended. Wanna guess who one of the three who stalked off straight to the locker room was? ‘Nuff said about #20…

  3. Isn’t everyone just sick of the diva moves of the players lately? I’m sure he’ll get what he wants which is a trade but he’s nowhere near as good as he thinks he is in my opinion

  4. Any team that trades for Ramsey is crazy. Like AB, you can see what this guy brings (good and bad) and you know how this will end.

  5. So….I forgot. What’s his problem again? Oh yea his coach didn’t challenge a 4 yard play which seems to have a zero success rate and then threw a tantrum on the sideline like a petulant child. He should go play on AB’s team…

It’s funny your trying to be snarky but that’s not his problem. As has been reported and hes said many times his problem had to do with a comversation after the game with management(coughlin).

  7. Does anyone really know what started this deal(I mean, other than $$)? So the Jags lose a couple and stuff gets said and that’s it? It’s going to take awhile for the Jags to lower their trade demands but this guy would look good in Arrowhead; Chiefs need some secondary help.

  8. Taking himself out only hurts himself physically..if he really wants a trade, play the game and then at the end of the 4th quarter blow ur assignment and let the other team win at the end

  9. It’s not about “wanting” or money, it’s about winning, and at this time it’s evident Jalen doesn’t believe the Jags are a winning organization.

  10. I understand calling in sick is when you’re probably not is very unprofessional, but comparing Ramsey to AB in anyway is just irresponsible and inaccurate. AB’s rap sheet is substantially longer than Jalen’s

  11. He’s a petulant, egomaniac who demands the world must proclaim he is the best defensive back back of all time. If anyone should refuse to “respect” him as such (Tom Coughlin), then that simply is unacceptable in his selfish, egocentric , little mind. This is a guy that will only be a good team mate if everyone publicly acknowledges that he’s better than everyone else. He’ll also demand to be paid more than every other defensive back in the league so as to confirm that he’s the best. I hope Coughlin makes him sit for the entire year. He’s a massively egotistical jerk.

  12. “He’ll be playing for the Pats by week 4.”

I doubt it. Pats secondary is damn good and they don’t need another headache immediate after Brown.

  13. Jags ought to tell him they are discussing trade options with the Jets and Dolphins as leading contenders. He might change his tune knowing that.

  14. Dude is really good…but i would still trade him.

My prediction for him is he will get his $$….and become an even bigger pain in the a$$..

and his play will probably drop off as well.

let him be someone else’s problem

Yes. In that conversation Coughlin almost certainly held him accountable for his diva behavior. Anything that cannot be viewed as kissing an athlete’s rear end is viewed as “disrespect” by way too many athletes that show little respect for anyone else. If Ramsey didn’t act like a jerk then that conversation never happens. Lately the divas have been stepping to and/or threatening coaches and GMs. That cannot be acceptable and the league needs to step in and hammer any player that does it no matter what the team may want.

Not a jaguars fan but all the people saying that he’s not very good is out of their minds. Easily top 5 cb in the NFL.

    ——-

No one has said he’s not good. People are saying he’s a juvenile narcissist, which he is.

  17. Apparently Ramsey has been reading Antonio Brown’s book on how to destroy a promising career within a few weeks. Demanding trades, calling in sick–that sounds just like the kind of tactics that AB loved to implement, and it certainly isn’t going to endear him to any teams that might be a potential home for his talents. I’m just waiting for Ramsey to get his feet frostbitten or something equally bizarre.

  18. Jax was asking too much for a player they have no intention of resigning or paying 13 million in 2020, take a 2nd and move on from the distraction or keep the feud going for 13 more games and then watch him holdout in the summer…. Be smart Jax

Has any of this diva behavior ever worked out well for anyone?

Yes. Brett Favre getting out of Atlanta and Steve Young getting out of Tampa Bay

What is that about inmates and the asylum????
    ——————————————————————————————–
They know the asylum doesn’t thrive without their work and now their educated enough to wield their power.

  21. Honour your contract Ramsey! You are a top 10 pick which means you got paid millions to play for the team who believed in taking you that high. Also if I am the Jags I would make him play rest of his rookie contract IF I do not get 2 firsts NOW. A very good chance they won’t so just get the juice out of him for the rest of his contract

And it would’ve worked too had Antonio not sent ill-advised texts to his accuser. The most talented players have the power to challenge these owners as long as they keep their personal lives clean. Won’t be finding any skeletons in Ramsey’s closet. It’s clean.

  23. Just sitting back making mental notes of all commenters calling him a cancer. Soon as their favorite team trades for him then its “awesome guy we got a steal and jags were dumb”.

You dont need these Ultra Divas on your team, it rarely results in a championship anyway.
    ============================================================================================
Tell that to the Dallas Cowboys, the Favre led Packers, Aaron Rodgers’-led Packers, Big Ben and the Steelers, the 1985 Bears, shoot a whole host of teams.

  25. Sooooo what if he is sick? I mean .. there is the possibility he is on the up and up … Would you want him at your practice so your entire team gets sick. I mean maybe he is just playing hookie, but maybe he is sick. Everyone I think at any job is entitled to sick days.

  26. Coughlin can be gruff and rough around the edges so i can see a frail ego person get’s all butt hurt over something that was said.

  27. “What is that about inmates and the asylum????”
    —————————————————
You can’t say to today’s Millennials. They think it’s some kind of racist comment….rather than a life/business saying that’s been used for a hundred years before they were born.

  28. Honestly, I am all for the players doing what they think is best for them. I know folks around here will make their comments about”entitled” players and so forth but I rather see “entitled” players as opposed to 50 years ago where the owners had all the rights, powers, and money. But I digress…

For me personally, I just wish it didn’t have to be so public. Stop ‘leaking’ to the press, running on twitter, and all that other stuff.

  29. Tell him to sit on the bench Every game and pay him. Nothing could be a worse sentence for a competitive athlete

  30. Im not sold that he is malingering here. That looks like speculation but sick does happen and sick is sick. Also I see nothing but speculation to substantiate how long he will be out but if making a guess then a week can make sense. If he is running a temp and/or dehydrated then even after that clears there is recovery time before a person is full strength again. Especially for what full strength means to a guy like Ramsey. (Famous such case is the Butler in the SB one). Also if there is even a shred of a chance of it spreading its better for the team if he stays away. Im not saying he isnt faking, Im not speculating any less than the rest, just pointing out that the story is not necessarily false just because of the timing of it. IMHO the best thing Jacksonville can do is just shrug and plan to go without him for this week. If he is sick then that might be the case anyhow and if he’s playing games then just shrugging it off and continuing without him is the best way to stand up to that.

  31. Hey a person on here claimed that Ramsey didn’t shake hands after he lost the AFC championship to the Pats. And that it shows how childish he is. Well guess who else doesn’t shake hands after loses? Tom Brady after each of his superbowl loses 2 to Manning and 1 to Foles ran right off the field. Guess that makes him childish to

  32. Ramsey has done this the right way, he informed the team that their professional relationship was not working out, requested a trade, didn’t leak anything to the press, played hard and contributed to a win in order to give them time to maximize their trade value.

    And STILL folks aren’t satisfied.

It sure sounds like the Jaguars are TRYING to implode. In any case they are succeeding. Did they not pay ANY attention to what happened to the Steelers after they played hardball with Bell and Brown?

Well it’s entertaining to watch anyway, so long as you’re not a Jaguars fan.

  33. Is this “news”?! I’m guessing there are other players in the league who aren’t showing up to work today. Half of them work for my Redskins!

This isn’t the off season when “reporters” have to fish for news.

Don’t create a narrative here. Whatever this is will play out in due time and actually be news or nothing at all.

  34. Taking himself out only hurts himself physically..if he really wants a trade, play the game and then at the end of the 4th quarter blow ur assignment and let the other team win at the end

    -____________________________________________________________________________________________________-

That’s a great strategy .. if his goal was to get cut and become a FA.

  35. Why would anyone think that the players were the “inmates” of the NFL’s asylum?

Clearly they are the NFL’s workers, NOT its “inmates.”

The FANS are the inmates, they are the ones whose needs the “asylum” serves, not the Players.

I have no problem with the workers running the asylum as their “hands on” knowledge is often superior to that of the “administration” who thinks that the whole reason for the asylum is just to bring them more money, not to serve the needs of the fans.

  36. There’s a significant percent of Jaguars fans who wouldn’t mind seeing this guy leave. I am one of them.

  37. Ramsey is the best DB in the game. They had a chance to go to the super bowl a couple years ago and the coach completely froze up and didn’t know how to win the game. He just stopped trying to score points and the Patriots didn’t. I’m not a big fan of players wanting to call the shots like a lot seem to be doing nowadays, but I don’t blame Ramsey for wanting to get out of this organization. I don’t know what was said to Ramsey by the front office, but apparently it was something Ramsey can’t move beyond. At some point you have to either get on board or ask to be traded.

Correct that conversation probably doesnt happen but again his problem was the conversation and repercussions to his actions NOT the fact Marrone didnt throw the flag like the original poster said. Tantrums happen on the sidelines during games and then it’s usually left there. I’m not saying Ramsey was in the right all I’m saying is zonon85 isnt right.

  39. This whole player power movement turned me off to the NBA-and its starting to do the same with the NFL. These guys better be careful the dont kill the golden goose.
