“Unbelievable” Dalvin Cook leading the way for Vikings offense

Getty Images

Dalvin Cook went over 100 rushing yards in Sunday’s 34-14 win over the Raiders and that made him the first Vikings player in history to rush for at least that many yards in each of the team’s first three games.

The Vikings have won two of those games and their run game has been so effective in those wins that they haven’t tried a pass in the fourth quarter. That’s a stark difference from last year and it’s the kind of running game that head coach Mike Zimmer said the team was missing during the 2018 campaign.

Tight end Kyle Rudolph called Cook’s production “unbelievable” after Sunday’s win and Cook said he likes the way the offense is taking shape.

“It’s part of our head coach’s identity,” Cook said, via Jon Krawczynski of TheAthletic.com. “That comes with the old school rules. We know the type of defense we’ve got, if we can keep this thing close and keep this thing manageable for us to go win the football game, that’s part of running the football and taking big shots and making plays and just converting. That’s what Zim likes to do. I like it, if that’s what Zimmer likes to do.”

There will likely be weeks when Cook finds the slogging a bit tougher, but it seems unlikely that the Vikings will change anything about their approach until it is absolutely necessary.

  1. Can’t count on one player to carry the team. Cook is a great running back, but he will wear down as the season goes on. The Vikings better figure out ways to win with other options or they will fade if Cook fades. They will be in big trouble if Cook gets injured. Figuring out a way to keep Cousins from making bone head plays would be a good start.

  2. This is Parcells in Zim’s ear… the Big Tuna swore by this… keep the ball, keep it on the ground, run the clock, score a few touchdowns and count on your defense to get you the ball back quickly.

    Worse teams than this have won Super Bowls this way (Tampa Bay, I’m talking about you)

  3. The rookie Mattison was very effective in limited snaps as well. Game ball to the Minnesota Maulers up front!

    @@@@@@@@@@@@

    That’s funny coming from a packer fan. green and yellow thinking there.

  5. If cook stays healthy and mattison continues to play like he has…the Vikings have a great 1-2 punch in the ground where teams will have a hard time stopping these guys. Teams will have to either stop the run or the pass. This will help cousins a lot.

  6. I get Cousins made an awful mistake last week, but he had a 4000+ yard 30 TD 10int season last year. It’s not like they are saddled with Tarvaris Jackson at QB. And that was with a terrible o-line.

  7. Bradbury, Mattison, O’Neil, Kline, Elfien and Cook.
    That’s been the biggest difference from last year to this year.
    And Dru Samia is waiting in the wings to start next year or the year after. Skol.

  8. Before you run out and make hotel and flight reservations for this year’s SuperBowl, you might want to consider this was against the Raiders, not exactly world beaters in the NFL.

    If you want to see the downside to relying on a star running back, just look at the NY Giants after Sunday’s game.

  9. I love this kind of football. Plays well for cold weather games. Helps Kirk out alot. Things are looking really good if they can keep Dalvin healthy.

  10. “Before you run out and make hotel and flight reservations for this year’s SuperBowl, you might want to consider this was against the Raiders, not exactly world beaters in the NFL.”

    The only team that the Raiders have beaten so far was the Denver Bronco’s. Let that sink in.

    I am amazed that instead of celebrating your own win, at least one Packer fan is over here disparaging ours. You are leading the division ( for now). Go enjoy that feeling while it lasts and we will celebrate the resurgent running game over here. No reason to throw stones until week 16. Now run along and root for your team.

    Better get these wins early. Looks like 6 of the final 8 games will be vs winning teams. So that’s 6 losses for the Vikings.
    ——-
    Same is true for the Packers. They have the same schedule and have two wins against non-winning teams. Their only win against a winning team came against…..wait for it….
    the lowly Vikings.

  12. Nice to see the huge turn-around to the now league leading running game. 2 wins at home without having to throw a single pass in the 4th quarter, impressive. 3 quarters of domination in GB, just need to fix the slow start, but clearly the Vikings were the better team. Looking forward to Sunday’s game against the Bears. If the can run against the Bears, then we have something.

  13. Difficult to load the box when the safeties need to help the CB’s cover Diggs and AT. As long as the Vikings can throw enough to keep the safeties “out of the box” this will continue. The Bears will offer a huge test. Play action will help a lot but we need to be able to protect Cousins or the Bears won’t honor the pass and play the run all night.

  14. Same is true for the Packers. They have the same schedule and have two wins against non-winning teams. Their only win against a winning team came against…..wait for it….
    the lowly Vikings.

    The Bears and the Vikings are non winning teams apparently? Think you just shot yourself in the foot there…

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Maybe if they just gave the Vikings so many homes games to start the season, they would be 3-0 like your team huh? They always give GB a home games to start the season so they can have that advantage, then the officials make sure they win there.
    Like I said before, I’d rather have a team that busts their butts and do it the right way versus having a team that just gets handed everything like the packers do.
  16. Well…..as a Packer fan, I have no problem recognizing Dalvin Cook for the talent he is. Dude is explosive and I hope he stays healthy. I can appreciate great talent in the game, regardless of his team’s colors.
  18. If the Vikings are so bad Packa fans…why are you wasting your precious time? Maybe you know your run will be ending soon…you aint that good…Flacco threw for a good chunk of yards…Lindsay ran through you guys…just a week after you got shredded by Cook…they always say timing is everything…good thing you ran into the Bears and Vikings when you did. Live it up…you ain’t that good.
    Apparently reading comprehension is not your best subject.
    So to answer your post, No. The Broncos (0-3) and the Bears (1-1) are NON winning teams currently. The Vikings are a winning team, but packer fans always say the Vikings wins don’t count.
    It’s pretty simple to follow, except when you are a packer who is determined to trash the Vikings. Packer fan rules applied to ……..the packers.
    HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA…EHHEH…. teeheeeehehehehehehee…. go and preach this to your cronies who are doing the same over on the Packer stories countless times a day. It gets a little sickening eh? About football- it’s good to see this kid finally healthy and tearing it up for you guys- good for the game. Trust me- as a Packer fan, the injuries are frustrating. Both of our teams have work ahead of them if they expect to do damage into January. All we can do as fans is celebrate their current successes and be an example of good sportsmanship in our rivalry. Good luck guys…
    I have. Packer fans the last 2 years.
    And packer fans back in the 70’s and 80’s when the packers were one of the worst teams in the NFL. When the packers have a bad year, packer fans revert to the old time classic….
    “13 world titles” that nobody has ever been alive to even see.
    The Packers defense as I have stated have played against average to below average QBs the first three game. Its not like they have faced Ryan and Rodgers in back to back weeks. The numbers are skewed. Those game were quizzes compared to the test the Packers have Thursday against Wentz and Prescott the following week. I knwo Packers fans are frustrated because they didn’t have an answer for Cook in the second half of their match up and it it wasnt’ for a bone head play by Cousins the Vikings could easily be 3-0. Vikings dont need free plays to score touchdowns on a hard count. Vikes earn em by running and blocking hard, you should know that after your squad’s failure to stop Cook in the second half of their first match up. We will see if the Packers can run the ball was well as the Vikings in December. The team the totes the rock the best will win the division.
    Out of the 3 teams you’ve played- only 1 of them had somewhat of a defense and you lost. That seems to prove that you “ain’t much betta”.
  24. STAT CHECK! Minus Cook’s 75 yd TD- he had 19 carries for 79 yards, or 4.15 yds per carry. Same game- Aaron Jones 23 carries for 116 yds, or 5.0 yds per carry. Both backs scored. Seems that you now have less to brag about.
  25. They have the same schedule and have two wins against non-winning teams
    —–
    Interesting logic there. Considering Chicago was 0-0 when we played them, and they then won the next week, they only have a losing record because we beat them….which you are no holding against us.
    That being said, Cook is a legit beast and I hope he stays healthy.
  26. Obviously you haven’t seen Alexander Mattison yet have you.He is just as good as Cook
    +++++
    After several weeks of having to read posts about how MVS is an unproven player who did had accomplished nothing despite 580 yards receiving last year-
    Now Mattison’s 25 NFL carries have made him equal to Dalvin Cook? Seems premature.
  27. They have the same schedule and have two wins against non-winning teams
    Wait, Chicago hasn’t even played yet and doesn’t have a losing record…they could easily be 2-1 tonight.
    Oh oh, but if you take away the first quarter from last weeks game then the packers are 2-1 while the Vikings are 3-0
    See how stupid it is to play this “stat check!” game of yours?
  29. The swing in Viking fan opinions of their team gives me whiplash.
    Week 1: We’re the greatest. Super Bowl bound!
    Week 2: Our line is horrible. We suck. Kirk is horrible. We sucked the whole game.
    Week 3: We’re the greatest. Our line is amazing. Kirk is a great game manager. We dominated the Packers for 3 quarters! Let’s get our Division Championship Banner printed!
    Facts: The Vikings looked good in two games vs. sub par opponents (exactly what you are supposed to do) The looked poor the whole game vs. the Packers, a superior opponent at the moment. The Vikings are as good as their record indicates, nothing more, nothing less.
    The Packers are 3-0 despite apparently looking horrible. So, the Vikings are 2-1 and clicking on all cylinders but the Packers are 3-0 and still have tons of room to improve?? I know who I would rather be come December… and it isn’t in purple.
    Should’ve been here last week, they wanted their QB traded & their coach & GM fired. I’m pretty sure they created a couple of new lakes in Minnesota, with all of their tears!!!
    ………………………………………………….
    Alexander Mattison 5.3 a tote
    Aaron Jones 3.8 a tote
    Mattison would start for the Packers over Aaron Jones
  32. Vikings fans don’t even need to comment. Packer fans will tell us all what they (didn’t) say. And, did somebody really say that without Cooks 75 yard td run he would of had 75 less yards and 1 less TD? Thanks for that stat. Nobody hit the panic button being 1 game behind the Packers with 14 games to play. But, everybody said Cousins made a very bad decision to end the game. That’s not going out on a limb.
    Well that’s interesting logic. Does this apply to the Vikings?
    So you can’t trash the Vikings then for their “weak” schedule.
    They beat Atlanta who was 0-0 at the time. They beat Oakland who was 1-1 at the time.
    In fact, the Vikings haven’t even played a losing opponent based on your logic, while the packers just played the lowly Broncos who were 0-2 going into the game.
    Bottom line is that both teams are good and will compete for a division title. But it’s packer fans who claim the Vikings wins aren’t good enough, while packer fans ignore that same rule.
    Well, this is true of the Packers as well.
    Chicago this year is a sub par opponent. (I think they lose tonight. Regardless they have a poor offense)
    Denver is a sub-par opponent.
    But somehow the packers are superior?
    They do have a better record currently. I wouldn’t stick your neck out claiming superiority in Green Bay yet, you might get whiplash.
    You are right. And if they lose they could go 1-2…..Right?
    That’s a losing record…..right?
  36. With Cook,Mattison and Boone the Vikings are very solid at running back. It is nothing like the AD days of old except Cook is a threat to go all the way like AD.
