PFT’s Week Four picks

Good not great.

That pretty much summarizes our performance to date in picking 2019 games. Last week, with no disagreements, MDS and I were 10-6 each.

For the year, he’s 28-20 and I’m 27-21.

For this week’s picks, which feature five disagreements, scroll on.

Eagles at Packers

MDS’s take: Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers have won their first three games together, but what people don’t seem to be noticing is it’s the Packers’ defense that’s leading them this season, and the offense hasn’t been great. I look for the defense to keep rolling as the Packers win a close one.

MDS’s pick: Packers 13, Eagles 10.

Florio’s take: Correction Sunday happens on a Thursday. The Eagles are getting desperate, and Doug Pederson is 3-0 on a short week. Alshon Jeffery is back, Carson Wentz is healthy, and the Packers are due to take a step back after an unexpectedly hot start.

Florio’s pick: Eagles 28, Packers 24.

Titans at Falcons

MDS’s take: The Falcons’ offense has really not played well at all this year, but I think there’s too much talent there for them not to turn it around. Sunday is win that happens.

MDS’s pick: Falcons 28, Titans 21.

Florio’s take: The Titans play up and down to the level of the competition. This is one they should lose, so they’ll win — possibly with Ryan Tannehill replacing Marcus Mariota, if he sputters again.

Florio’s pick: Titans 23, Falcons 20.

Browns at Ravens

MDS’s take: The Browns’ early schedule isn’t doing them any favors. For all the offseason hype, they’re not the best team in the AFC North, and they’ll fall to 1-3 as the Ravens take early control of the division.

MDS’s pick: Ravens 27, Browns 17.

Florio’s take: The old Browns are still better than the new Browns, especially since the coach of the old Browns is anything but a self-admitted newbie.

Florio’s pick: Ravens 27, Browns 20.

Patriots at Bills

MDS’s take: It’s not often that an undefeated team is a touchdown underdog at home, but the Bills are — and they should be even bigger underdogs.

MDS’s pick: Patriots 30, Bills 14.

Florio’s take:  This victory will have Tom Brady’s named printed on it, along with the other things that will be thrown on the field with his name printed on them.

Florio’s pick: Patriots 30, Bills 21.

Chiefs at Lions

MDS’s take: It’s not often that an undefeated team is a touchdown underdog at home, but the Lions are — and they should be even bigger underdogs.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 35, Lions 16.

Florio’s take: If the Lions can pull this one off, we need to dramatically change how we view the Lions. For now, though, it’s hard to imagine any team not located in New England outpacing Patrick Mahomes and company.

Florio’s pick: Chiefs 34, Lions 24.

Panthers at Texans

MDS’s take: Kyle Allen gave the Panthers some hope that they can win without Cam Newton, but they’ve got a tougher opponent this week in Houston, where Deshaun Watson should have a big game in a Texans win.

MDS’s pick: Texans 24, Panthers 17.

Florio’s take: Don’t look now, but the team without a General Manager is managing generally well.

Florio’s pick: Texans 23, Panthers 17.

Raiders at Colts

MDS’s take: The Raiders’ Week One win is looking like a mirage after seeing how they’ve played the last two weeks. They’re still one of the worst teams in the league.

MDS’s pick: Colts 20, Raiders 10.

Florio’s take: Dave Casper isn’t walking through that door for the Raiders. Put simply, the Colts are a very good team, and the Raiders are not.

Florio’s pick: Colts 34, Raiders 20.

Chargers at Dolphins

MDS’s take: At this point picking against the Dolphins is automatic, and the only question is how big the point spread will be. The Chargers are favored by 16, and I think they’ll cover.

MDS’s pick: Chargers 35, Dolphins 14.

Florio’s take: Kellen Winslow wouldn’t need to be helped off the field after this one.

Florio’s pick: Chargers 42, Dolphins 10.

Washington at Giants

MDS’s take: Daniel Jones gets an easy opponent in his second start, and he’ll move to 2-0 after the Giants started the season at 0-2 with Eli Manning running the offense.

MDS’s pick: Giants 23, Washington 13.

Florio’s take: It would be great to witness the first chapter in the looming Daniel Jones/Dwayne Haskins rivalry. But dysfunctional teams continue to do dysfunctional things.

Florio’s pick: Giants 30, Washington 21.

Seahawks at Cardinals

MDS’s take: The Seahawks were a major disappointment last week, losing at home to a depleted Saints team. This week they should get back on track against a Cardinals team that still has a lot of rebuilding to do.

MDS’s pick: Seahawks 28, Cardinals 21.

Florio’s take: The rest of the NFL is quickly figuring out the Kliff Kingsbury offense.

Florio’s pick: Seahawks 34, Cardinals 17.

Buccaneers at Rams

MDS’s take: Jared Goff is not playing well, but the Rams’ defense will shut down Jameis Winston and Los Angeles will move to 4-0.

MDS’s pick: Rams 20, Buccaneers 10.

Florio’s take: This one has potential upset written all over it, because the Bucs aren’t as bad as their record suggests. But the Rams seem intent on proving the doubters wrong. And they are.

Florio’s pick: Rams 27, Buccaneers 20.

Vikings at Bears

MDS’s take: This may be the biggest game of the season so far, two 2-1 teams needing to keep pace in the competitive NFC North. I see the Bears’ defense clamping down on the Vikings’ offense.

MDS’s pick: Bears 14, Vikings 10.

Florio’s take: A run-based offense and a competent defense should outscore a Chicago team that is still searching for its offensive identity.

Florio’s pick: Vikings 20, Bears 14.

Jaguars at Broncos

MDS’s take: As a nation prays for Jalen Ramsey that he recovers from his flu and hamstring and back injuries, the Jaguars show that they’ve got a good enough team to win in Denver whether they have their star cornerback or not.

MDS’s pick: Jaguars 20, Broncos 17.

Florio’s take: The Broncos aren’t as bad as 0-3 would suggest, and desperation may be enough to push them past a Jaguars team that has spent too much time dealing with the Jalen Ramsey situation.

Florio’s pick: Broncos 23, Jaguars 20.

Cowboys at Saints

MDS’s take: Can the Saints keep winning without Drew Brees? I don’t think so Teddy Bridgewater will struggle and Dak Prescott will continue his outstanding season.

MDS’s pick: Cowboys 30, Saints 20.

Florio’s take: The planets aligned perfectly for the Saints to beat the Seahawks last Sunday in Seattle. That likely won’t be happening for a second straight Sunday, especially against the best team in the NFC.

Florio’s pick: Cowboys 31, Saints 21.

Bengals at Steelers

MDS’s take: An 0-3 vs. 0-3 matchup was not what the NFL was envisioning when it put this game in prime time. These may be the two worst teams in the league outside Miami right now. I’ll take the home team in what should be an ugly matchup.

MDS’s pick: Steelers 16, Bengals 13.

Florio’s take: The Steelers seem to be in denial about the current state of the team, running in mud and repeatedly falling flat. This should be the game they win, but the Bengals have the better team — and they’ll relish the chance to grease the skids toward a very rare bad year in the ‘Burgh.

Florio’s pick: Bengals 23, Steelers 17.

  1. I’m picking the Lions to upset the Chiefs. They beat the Patriots in 2018 and defeated the Chargers a few weeks ago at home. Beating the Eagles in Philadelphia is no easy task as well. They have the defense to give Mahomes problems. Don’t forget that they now have Trey Flowers.

  2. Patriots 20 Bills 17 this will be the first nail biter game the Pats will have this year look for this to be a defensive game. Packers 31 Eagles 20 Wentz looks off and the Eagles defense is giving up big plays Rodgers will carve them up. Steelers 30 Bengals 13 Cincy looks bad on defense.

  3. Falcons over Titans – Falcons seemed to have under estimated the Colts last week.. Though they played well they could not prevail… The Falcons don’t make that mistake twice in a row.

    Panthers over Texans – panther looked far better with Kyle as their qb and the Texans defense hasn’t shown as strong as in their past..

    Rams over Buccaneers – Rams are playoff caliber Team and the Bucs, well, NOT even close.

    Saints over Cowboys – Payton has shown he can win with backups… The Cowboys will play well of course but the Saints at home get the win.

  4. YOU PICKED AGAINST THE PACKERS FLORIO, QUE PACKER FANS LIGHTING THEIR TOURCHES AND GRABBING THEIR PITCHFORKS

  5. The Patriots are loaded. They got Thanos, Emperor Palpatine, Thor, and Iron Man all on one team. Fortunately, they lost the Incredible Hulk known as Gronk.

  6. The Eagles are desperate and that will make them play the Packers extra tough tonight, but I think the Packers will still prevail in a squeaker.
    But the comical part is Florio thinking the Packer defense giving up 28 points.

    (But hey, he also thinks the Vikings are beating Chicago too, LOL 😂)

  7. Ngl, I legit might cry from happiness if by some miracle the Bucs can upset the Rams. I completely expecting an L mind you but still.

  8. “…what people don’t seem to be noticing is it’s the Packers’ defense that’s leading them this season,”

    Um, anybody that’s watched any of the games has. Or seen the scores. Or read any sports press.

  9. “Florio’s take: A run-based offense and a competent defense should outscore a Chicago team that is still searching for its offensive identity.”

    A remarkable fact that’s overlooked about these Bears is that you cannot run on them. Minnesota will try early only to find themselves in multiple 3rd and longs, then it’s the Kirk Cousins show. It’s just not a good matchup for Minnesota. They need Trubisky to really tank the game with turnovers to have a chance, because Cousins will throw them the ball.

  10. Can we all agree that the Monday Night Football game is a total joke? The Bengals make my eyes bleed.

  11. Rodney Harrison said the Lions will be 2-3-1 in a month after losing 3 in a row beginning this weekend. It’s not likely but boy it woukd be nice to see them do the opposite just to see him squirm while eating some ice cold crow.

  12. I still think Jay Gruden has some time. Washington hasn’t fired a head coach midseason since 2000, which was Norv Turner in Dan Snyder’s second season. DC Greg Manusky though …

  13. cowboys are4 good but not enough to beat the real best nfc team unless the refs are helping like they do for the rams

  14. If the Seahawks lose to the Cardinals…..the wheels will fall off with the Rams coming to town on a short week Thursday nighter. With all the missed tackles against the Saints last week, I can see Murray running all over their D and taking this game to the wire.

    ________

    Why? They’re just pointless weekly game picks.
    They’re as meaningless as PFT’s Power Rankings.
    Nobody honestly cares.
    Oh, by the way, you left your Caps Lock button on.

  16. It’s going to be a gorgeous partly cloudy Sunday at New Era Field with temperatures in the low 70’s… Perfect football weather.

    BillsMafia will force Brady into a silent count and create an atmosphere that will rattle the Patriot offense into mistakes.

    It was deafening in New Era last week against the Bengals… Imagine what it will be like against the most hated team in league history… Madness!

    This will not be a gimmie game for Brady… He’s going to have to work very hard for a W this week.

  17. Eagles are still beat up — Pack wins.

    Bears D better than Vikes D — Bears win.

    Detroit finally plays a healthy team — Chiefs win.

  18. I sure hope that Mack guy doesn’t snap my quarterback in half this week.

  19. The team that wins in Buffalo will be the one that trails 21-0 after the first quarter.

    I love Dettoit and picked them last week but it would be too much of a Christmas gift … Kansas City by 10.

    Ditto Cincinnati. In what universe does Pittsburgh lose its first 4 games?

    Eagles over Packers bc the Philadelphia City Council has voted against an Eagles loss.

    Vikings over Bears bc I heard somewhere that Mitch Trubisky is garbage.

    Falcons over Titans in OT.

    Jaguars over Broncos

    Cowboys over Saints

    Browns over Ravens

    Chargers over Dolphins in a surprisingly close game.

    That concludes my community service.

  20. Tomlin, you know a friggin great coach….wait till they lose at home, go 0-4

    The BOO birds will be out in force, Tomlin will be on the hot seat. 1 ticket out of Pittsburgh please.

  21. YOU PICKED AGAINST THE PACKERS FLORIO, QUE PACKER FANS LIGHTING THEIR TOURCHES AND GRABBING THEIR PITCHFORKS

    This Packer fan is thrilled Florio picked against the Packers.

  22. I am normally not a Packer fan, but I am all for kicking the overrated Eagles when they are down.

    If it’s a defensive game, Buffalo will score minus 14 points.

  24. I never feel comfortable picking the Falcons or Vikings. It always comes back to bite me. I’m leaning toward both of them this week, and I don’t feel good about it at all.

    I agree that the Cowboys are the best team in the NFC. If they can avoid injury, they may well end up being a serious challenge to the current kings of the league (NE, KC).

    Wentz looks off? I guess you’re basing that only off of the first half against Atlanta right? His receiving corps isn’t doing him any favors.

  26. I agree with every pick of Florio’s with the exception of the Redskins/Giants game. I think the Skins bounce back and prove the newly annointed future HOF QB of the Gmen is still just a rookie.

    MDS picking the favorite is as sure as death and taxes.

  27. The Cowboys blow out probably the 3 worst teams in the league (Eli version Giants are horrible)- at best 3 of the worst 4 if you want to mix in the Raiders and now they are the best team in the conference LOL

  28. Minshew Mania ends in Denver (though I wish it wouldn’t).

    NE’s defense is a monster, and Josh Allen ain’t slaying it.

  29. The Packers are going good and the Eagles are going bad, but do you really expect the Eagles to be 1-3 and the Packers to be 4-0?

  31. LOL at Florio saying “dysfunctional teams do dysfunctional things.” Back in 2012 he was criticizing the Redskins the whole season saying they’re starting Griffin too early now he wants them to do the same with Haskins?

  32. You guys continuously rank the Cowboys above the Rams, but we’ll see what happens when the Cowboys actually have to face a real opponent.

    If you think Wentz looks off, you haven’t been watching. Wentz looks great most of the time, and his numbers are virtually identical to 2017 at this point. He didn’t look right for a quarter after taking a shot in the ribs in Atlanta. After that, no issue.

  35. Whether Eagles fans want to admit it or not Wentz is seeing ghosts in the pocket some of his woes are due to his wide receivers dropping passes particularly Aghlor to be fair.

  36. Iggles beat the Pack tonight – should they no way but it’s ebb and flow of the NFL.

    And again for those whining about the Cowboys, they can only beat who they play. Are the 3 teams they played bad, sure they are but they have totally dominated the games as they should. Most of you acting like babies haven’t watched one of them. If they beat the Saints this week, it’s bc Brees wasn’t there, when they beat the eagles the WRs were hurt, when they beat the next guy it’s the refs…Shut up and get a life!

    In games not against against the Vikings, GB gives up a shade under 100 yds/game and a little over 3 yds/carry. Vikings gained 198

    In games not against the Vikings, Oak allows 63 yds/game and under 3 yds/carry. Vikings more than tripled that at 211 yds

    Buckle up buttercup.

  38. Where are all the Broncos fans? In cryogenic hibernation? Of all the AFC East teams to be on their schedule, it would have to be the Bills (3-0) rather than the Jets (0-3) or Dolphins (0-3). Couldn’t happen to a nicer fanbase. Where is the win in a 1-15 finish supposed to come from?

  39. The Vikings relying on the run is going to kill them and I love it.

    Early season and they are having some success, but it is a long season and Cook hasn’t proven he can stay healthy, nor have we seen if he can handle such a heavy workload for a whole season even if healthy.

    The run game will get figured out and shut down and then Cousins will lose you games while the rest of the league laughs.

    Oh and the Vikes vaunted D? The start hot every season then get figured out and disappear. Zimmer doesn’t change and as a Pack fan I love it!

    _________

    Good question, but a better one is why are the Bears playing three Thursday games? They played on Thursday Week 1, then on Thanksgiving, and then again a week later. Dallas also plays on Thanksgiving and then a week later.

    I think this was an elaborate scheme to keep Cincinnati and Miami from ever being seen on a Thursday night.

    ____________

    The Vikings defense was terrible the first four games of last year. They gave up an average of 381.5 yards and 27.5 points in the first four games and average of 255.5 yards and 17.8 points in the last four games. There was no falloff in 2015 or 2017, either. So you’re wrong about that.

    Last year there was no run game all season and Kirk Cousins still managed to win two more games than Aaron Rodgers, so maybe they’ll be okay if the running game gets “figured out.” By the way, can you tell me the last time a great running team got “figured out” and then couldn’t run the ball anymore? There isn’t really a secret to it.

  42. An 0-3 vs. 0-3 matchup was not what the NFL was envisioning when it put this game in prime time.
    ———————-
    No, what the NFL envisioned when it put this game in prime time was another easy with for the Steelers at home, probably in an apology for having them start out on the road against New England and then at home against Seattle. Maybe felt bad that they had to go to the west coast last week. The NFL knew exactly what it was doing when it put the Steelers at home on Monday night against a Bengals squad that was 6-10 last year and has a brand-new, first-time HC.

    And don’t look now, but the league gave the Steelers another one down the line, at home on Monday night against the Dolphins (7-9 in 2018, with a brand-new, first-time HC). The Steelers just had to mess it up by not being good.

    Well, there’s all 42 of you’s problem… you think anytime your team bests Aaron Rodgers is some great success. No matter how weak they are, you’re perfectly happy for them to Still Keep On Losing, as long as they can beat a one-legged Aaron Rodgers in the midst of possibly his worst season ever.

    That’s just lovely. When is the parade?

    If that isn’t the loser way to think. Both teams made mistakes. Both teams were recipients of bad calls. The woulda coulda shoulda game goes both way. Hockenson could of had 2 TD’s but he didn’t. However, the Lions won the first half and the Eagles couldn’t overcome that deficit. That’s how the game went down. The end.

  45. Why does everyone keep saying the Patriots defense is the best in the nfl, when they haven’t played anyone good yet. They played the three worst teams in the nfl with a combined record of 0-9. LoL. Brady has benefited from playing in the weakest division of all time for his whole career, never played against a good qb in his division since brady first joined the Patriots. Brady has been gifted a free pass to the playoffs every year in his division. His division is an embarrassment. Dolphins, bills and jets haven’t had a good qb since the 90’s. LoL. Brady is the most overrated qb of all time. Free trip to the playoffs every year. Weakest division of all time. Cheating scandals since his first year. New rules were made to protect brady and help him out with free first downs just for being touched. He benefits from the weak flag football era where you can’t touch him, that’s why he’s playing in his 40’s. He wouldn’t last into his 30’s in Montanas era, and would be lucky to have one ring.
    Brady is the most overrated qb of all time. He benefits from a great defence that helped him win his superbowls. Benefits from the weakest division of all time and benefits from free trips to the playoffs, benefits from his best friends the refs. He’s choked against Jake plummer and the broncos in the playoffs.
    Choked against eli manning in the Super Bowl twice!
    Choked against mark sanchez and jets at home in the playoffs.
    Choked against manning and the Colts
    Chokes against manning and the broncos.
    Choked against flacco and the ravens.
    Choked against foles and the Eagles in the superbowl.
    Should’ve choked against Seattle in the superbowl when Seattle should’ve ran the ball to win the game.
    Should’ve choked against the falcons when they were getting blown out by more than 3 tds late in the 3rd q of the superbowl.
    Should’ve choked against the chiefs last year,in the playoffs after throwing a pick to end the game, but got saved by an offsides penalty. Againstthe rams in the Super Bowl, his defense won him the Super Bowl again. He barely put up 13 points. Lol.😬
    Brady is the most overrated qb of all time. He’s a great game manager and above average qb. But nowhere near the greatest of all time. He’s a system qb with the same coach for the past 20 years, has had a Great defense throughout his career, and the referees are his best friends that make new rules for him and help him win games.

    I left out the rest of this absolutely EPIC rant. His very first sentence and his very last sentence say all that needs to be said., as far as I’m concerned.

  47. Saints will go 5-1 while Brees is out and by the time he comes back in 6 weeks for the Atlanta game on Nov 10th, they will be sitting at 7-2 and in prime position to make a run at the Superbowl. With a well rested Drew Brees for that last 8 games and playoffs, the Saints would be the favorite to get to the Superbowl and win it. Last year he worn down at the end of the season but with half the season to rest that will not happen this year.

  48. Bears easily hold serve at home against the perpetually .500 Vikings.

    MN will be in sole possession of last place, and 0-2 against the division. Stick a fork in the Vikings, because their season is done.

    He may actually be onto something here. Run NFL QBs like MLB pitchers. Teddy’s the starting pitcher that you hope gets you deep enough to go to the closer (Brees). If Teddy falters, the bullpen (Taysom Hill) comes on until Brees is ready.

    It may sound crazy but Brees might be able to play another 5 or even 10 years with the reduced workload.

    Brady is the most overrated qb of all time. He’s a great game manager and above average qb. But nowhere near the greatest of all time. He’s a system qb with the same coach for the past 20 years, has had a Great defense throughout his career, and the referees are his best friends that make new rules for him and help him win games.

    Oh gee, what would that make Peyton Manning and his 9 playoff one and dones? He had more first round playoff exits after leading teams to 12-4, 13-3, and 14-2 records than Tom Brady has super bowl rings right now. That is absolutely pathetic. For a guy with five league MVPs, why was he so valueless in the playoffs? Aaron Rodgers has thrown 4 touchdowns to 3 interceptions in career NFC championship games, and he rarely ever stays healthy. That guy is 5-23 in games against teams with winning records on the road since 2012. Joe Montana’s defenses rank higher than the Patriots’ super bowl winning teams in multiple seasons. Check out the DVOA ratings.

    Remember when Brady’s defense allowed 29 points against the Panthers, 41 points against the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, 31 points against the Ravens in the 2014 divisional round, 40 points against the Chiefs in the 2018 regular season, and 31 points in last season’s AFC championship game? System quarterbacks don’t convert three consecutive 3rd and 10 plays on the road in overtime to advance to a 9th super bowl appearance in this 21st century. Not to mention, throw 5 touchdown passes in a single quarter or 6 touchdowns in a playoff game. How about bring a team back from a 25-point deficit at the end of the 3rd quarter to win a fifth super bowl? Rodgers has never had a 153.8 perfect passer-rating game. Brady has had three of those.

    Wow, pack fans.the green and yellows are easily triggered
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Yes they are. Thanks for differentiating between those parts of the 42 and us actual Packer fans.
  52. Carson Wentz should test the Packers’ new improved defense, but the Packers’ new offense is getting better every week. Packers 31 Eagles 21
    The Eagles are desperate and that will make them play the Packers extra tough tonight, but I think the Packers will still prevail in a squeaker.
    But the comical part is Florio thinking the Packer defense giving up 28 points.
    (But hey, he also thinks the Vikings are beating Chicago too, LOL 😂)
    They’ve already given up 21 at halftime….
    Have you watched a kansas city game this year or are you so used to watching your lions lose that this years lions and their w/l record has created some type of false hype in Michigan?
    Trey Flowers wont make a difference, Patrick Mahomes will
    Kansas City-31
    Detroit-17
  55. Rob Brzezinski is a Magician, Sunday. Sunday was the last time a great running team was figured out. The Bears shut down the run and Cousins was crap as usual.
    So there’s your answer, Sunday.
