Bears mum about Roquan Smith’s personal issue

Bears linebacker Roquan Smith was a healthy scratch for Sunday’s game, and the Bears aren’t saying why.

“I’m just gonna say it was a personal issue,” Bears coach Matt Nagy said, via NBCSportsChicago.com. “I’m not getting into anything else. I’m just gonna completely keep it at that.”

But what kind of personal issue? Legal? Disciplinary? Something that concerns the team about Smith’s availability going forward? Nagy isn’t saying.

“I’m not getting into anything with Roquan,” Nagy said.

It’s unclear whether Smith will practice this week or travel to London for Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

  1. gotta be tough living your life under a public microscope but unfortunately when youre a high profile chicago bear it comes with the territory. hopefully he hasnt suffered some kind of family or personal tragedy.

  2. When you miss a key divisional game at the last minute and your availability is in question going forward you don’t get away without providing answers

  3. I hope it’s not something terrible disease or a horrible tragedy that befell his family. I guess we will find out in due time.

  4. dude crashed his lambo into a parked car in river north the night before the big game. bad decision on his part to even be out. pretty sure he may have broken a curfew rule cuz why the heck is he driving a lambo in a row of bars the night before a game? and why did he crash? he ran like lance briggs and is lucky he didn’t get a DUI. roquan is a great player, it’ll be a shame if he turns into a turd.

This is what happened. I can’t say for certain but it’s out there in Chicago. It’s been on all the Bear forums. People know who Roquan is so if he crash in front of bars, people know who is walking away from their car.

He didn’t crash his car…that story has been proven false hours ago.

Then enlighten us. Bears fans are besides themselves. And who did this debunking?

I’m sure you thought that when Everson Griffin’s dirty laundry got exposed last year. Oh that’s right, Bear fan, you were reveling in it. Double standard much?

It is our business because the fans buy the tickets, merchandise, watch the games and make this all possible.

The teams need to provide transparency.

Sorry but I have no idea what you are referring to with Everson Griffin. Should I care?

  12. Some of y’all crack me up, this is a high profile, public figure making millions whose availability affects a wide range of people. When you decide to become a professional athlete, you’re under the microscope, like it or not. If one doesn’t like it, I can totally respect that…then don’t be a professional athlete, get a normal 9-5 like everyone else and then you gain your privacy back. It isn’t that hard. Lots of hypocrites on here saying it’s not our business but when it’s juicy involving someone like AB, you can’t get enough but when it’s your team, all the sudden it’s “we need to mind our own business”. Give me a break!

  13. As long as he’s not on the field when the Bears play my team. But anything short of a psychiatric issue and it is newsworthy right now.

  14. According to a locker room source, Smith’s behavior was “erratic” all week leading up to the game. Also, it’s proven it wasn’t his car, he wasn’t involved in the accident, and the person who posted that pic on Twitter deleted it. WSCR in Chicago got a copy of the piolice report from the accident and Smith wasn’t involved. Hope he gets the help he needs.

  15. NFL players get rich BECAUSE fans care so much about their team winning and the betability of each player. So, yes it IS relevant or they aint makin no money..

And there are PICTURES of his car smashed into a parked car – right in front of a row of bars…

no one seems to have “proof” if HE was driving it though…

This Lions fan is so upset about being consistently wrong on here and the Bears live rent free in his tiny head. He’s also MEGA triggered by Trubisky and Daniel sweeping him last year. Hope you’re enjoying that third place slot in the division you won’t be there long there…..sounds like that preditiction was correct, lol. The pathetic Lions plummet to the basement starting 10/14 vs the Packers on MNF!

    Yes we are.

  18. Sadly in today’s world, “personal issues” mean that reporters will put even more effort in to being the one who delivers the ‘breaking news’

  19. Again, this is what it looks like when you have an organization that lacks leadership and a clear sense of purpose, your young star players do stupid stuff, then in dealing with it, ones uses lame excuses and is not transparent. The Bear franchise is a high profile social entity. Just deal with it and move on, remember in any scandal, it is never the crime and always the cover up that causes the issues. Another Ryan Pace/matt Nagy Failure.

The Bears are 12-4, division champs and have the same record as last year. How is that an organization lacking leadership? This kid made a mistake and it will all be forgotten before anyone can remember. You literally contradict yourself multiple times in this ridiculous rant. Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy don’t have super power mind control to make all their players make the right decisions in life. These are young kids with lots of money and fame thrown at them. Keep eating the paint chips kid. Your hateful and meaningless rants remind of that scene from Billy Madison where the guy goes off and said “We are all dumber” after hearing from Mike Shereck.

  21. “This kid made a mistake and it will all be forgotten before anyone can remember.”

Sounds like you know all about it, empty brain with a black heart and no spin.

  23. Lots of speculation, opinions and trash in these comments. No one knows what he did for sure, but I’m sure it’s serious. I saw Nagy’s presser on NFL network yesterday and he (Nagy) was very evasive concerning Roquan.

Since the “public” is entitled to know everything, and I am a member of the public, I am entitled to know all your bank account information. Or do you want to reconsider your position?

  25. I’m curious what the heck caused him to miss a game and for the team to remain quiet about what happened, but if that was his car, I’m pretty sure he would have been arrested for leaving the scene of an accident. I’m guessing if it’s erratic behavior, he will have mended fences with the coaching staff before the plane leaves for London. At least I hope so. I have to give my game ball to Nick Kwiatkoski this past Sunday for playing amazingly in Roquan’s absence.

  26. This is why winning multiple Super Bowls, let alone one, is why the Patriots are in the mix every year. Personnel wise, they never seem to have any issues with their players and coaches off the field (Barring the Antonio Brown debacle). And when they do Bill Belichick and the management is quick to crush it by cutting, suspending or firing the individual that caused the disturbance “in the force”. But every year they win a SB, they are firing on all cylinders personnel wise, on and off the field.

Whatever is on RO’s plate, I hope he gets it taken care of. He seems to be a pretty good young man. I believe it is not a discipline issue, otherwise the Bears would have likely said so. But the longer it goes on, the more it becomes a distraction and the Bears will have to address it in the public forum.

  27. I’m sure you thought that when Everson Griffin’s dirty laundry got exposed last year. Oh that’s right, Bear fan, you were reveling in it. Double standard much?

Delusional. I live in Chicago and hear Bear fans. My eyes see what the Bears are bringing. There is a lot of talk that Chase is playing better than Trubisky. Sure, he’s not a better athlete than Trubisky but QB? Face it, Chicago will live and die with their defense. Expecting anything from their offense going against anything other than a worse than mediocre team is ludicrous.

Go back to the basement in Mokena and get back to playing video games. Your comments are more than useless here.

  29. Love how media and fans think we are ENTITLED to know everything. Perhaps their view would be different if they had “personal issues” at the company they worked for and HR told everyone what those issues are?

  30. Why doesn’t the media mind their own beeswax!
Sports figures including owners, exec’s, coaches, and players all have their lives dissected and judged by the media.
I have yet to see a media figure receive the same treatment.
Does the public not have a right to know who is “reporting” the news?
Or does that “right” only work against celebrities and sports figures?
    SMH.

Everyone this guy lives in Chicago and he’s Lions fan. He can predict the future and is smarter than everyone else concerning the NFL.

You are sad human being, go get a hobby or a job to contribute something to society other than criticizing an NFL QB like a petulant child literally “living in your mom’s basement.” Man, do you even pay attention to how ridiculous your rants and handles are?

I am neither a Lions nor Bears fan, but everyone knows the Bears are a better football team than the Lions (Trubisky or not) so get over it already!

  33. You’d think some gumshoe in the media would be able to easily confirm or deny an accident involving a high-end sports car.

Since it hasn’t been in the news, maybe the Bears are waiting to see how it plays out.

  34. I would have to agree with user yogurtpigskin, Chase does seem to run the offense better and is more decisive in throwing the ball. This is coming from a Vikings fan. As far as Roquan, just because he is in the public eye doesn’t give any of us the right to know just because we buy a ticket or support our respective squads. People do not have empathy anymore they take peoples screw ups and make memes or plaster it all over their social media to get a cheap laugh. A long time ago in a galaxy far far away you didn’t do stuff like that as a journalist. Every reporter knew Babe was having affairs with other women but an athlete’s personal life back then was off limits. Now a days you can lose a career just off an accusation or for something you posted 10-15 years ago. If i were a professional athlete or a professional musician I’d avoid social media at all costs.

You all try living under that microscope, and do not give me a lame excuse as its part of being famous. It is but to a certain extent. Some people abuse it.

This has already been disproved. It wasn’t a car crash – license plate not registered to him and has been nixed by various credible reporters. Mental illness – most reports are now pointing to Quan not acting like himself all week.

  36. Oh, it will all come out eventually. This isn’t the sixties, seventies, eighties or nineties. I liked it better when we didn’t know everything about everyone, and when a misstep decades ago didn’t ruin your life.
