Khalil Mack: I’ve been looking forward to this week

Getty Images

When the NFL schedule was released in April, one of the games that caught the eye was the Week Five matchup between the Bears and Raiders.

For some, that might have been because it is one of this year’s London games. For most, however, it was the chance to see Bears linebacker Khalil Mack play against the team that he spent four years with before being traded when the Raiders passed on giving him a massive extension last year.

Mack left no doubt this week that he was on the list of people who zeroed in on the Oakland-Chicago game.

“Yes sir, yes sir,” Mack said on NFL Network, via Yahoo Sports. “I’ve been looking forward to it. This is one I’ve been looking forward to. I can’t lie to you, man; I’ve got to let you know how it is. It’s going to be a big one.”

Mack had 12.5 sacks in 14 games for the Bears last season and he has 4.5 sacks through four games this year. The Raiders have 18 sacks as a team over the same period of time.

  1. why would he have a grudge? he didn’t want to play in Oakland. he wanted to get paid. Raiders trade him to a team not in Oakland and he got paid. let it go dude.

  2. Khalil is gonna have 4+ sacks on Sunday and just be a terror. After each one he’s going to smile at Jon Gruden and rub his fingers together saying “shoulda paid me”.

  3. Such a childish attitude. The drafted him and paid him well, then traded him to the team that was willing to give him the megabucks contract. He should be grateful to the Raiders.

  4. Still have Macks jersey ..but come on man you wanted out you got 90 mil 6 year deal we gave you your wish .

Thanks man for letting us draft you and honoring your contract by threating to sit out all year LOL

    GEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  5. Mack is just another millenial. He has a grudge against the Raiders.. for what? Not standing in his way to get paid? The Raiders had Mack under contract for 2 more seasons and had Franchise tag rights after that. Did they play hardball like other organisations would have? No. They traded him to a team willing to pay him right away. He should be grateful.

  6. His current team is in a bit of disarray and their defense is underperforming. If Mack loses to his old team I guess he can look forward to his next shot.

  7. There are plenty of teams that do wrong by players that earned a big contract. The Raiders honoured Mack’s wishes and got something in return and he got a historic payday. If anyone had a right to hold a grudge it would be Raiders fans.

  8. How dare Mack feel the way he feels and not the way fans he’s never met and doesn’t know want him to feel.

    Talk about selfish.

  9. “Mack had 12.5 sacks in 14 games for the Bears last season and he has 4.5 sacks through four games this year. The Raiders have 18 sacks as a team over the same period of time.”

    =====================

That says a lot but Khalil Mack was/is also an excellent defender against the running game. IMO, Mack was the best Raider defender (in terms of dominance and of opponents having to game-plan for him) since Ted Hendricks.

But because Mack is a future HOFer and a leader in his own right, he had no need to ingratiate himself to Gruden and therefore was not the type of “Gruden Grinder” that the huge ego of the “coaching legend” could tolerate – so he had to go. No other team would’ve traded such a player especially one in his prime.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Raiders today would be much better off with Khalil Mack still on the team. Which of course means that Gruden would never have been brought back by Son-of-Al. Only the most devoted Gruden groupies would think that the reverse is true.

  10. Why? The Raiders traded him to a better team with bigger checks and a nice stadium. I fail to see his issue

  11. “Mack had 12.5 sacks in 14 games for the Bears last season and he has 4.5 sacks through four games this year. The Raiders have 18 sacks as a team over the same period of time.”

And yet neither team won the Super Bowl last year, but Raiders got 2 first round picks and saved $141 MILLION.

  12. The Raiders should give “Trying to win” a shot. Everything they do is to purposefully tank, but that only works if you don’t completely strike out on your picks.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

If their defense is underperforming then they are on their way to being the best defense in history because they are completely DOMINATING right now. I think its safe to say you don’t have a clue what is going on.

  14. It’s an era of Draft Capital.

Players who hold teams hostage by holding out shouldn’t sulk when they’re moved.

  15. I’m amused at how salty Raider’s fans are about this but the reality is the Bears got the better end of the deal. Raider’s got what? Arden Key and his 1 career sack

  16. Dude , the Raiders drafted you and loved you for 4 years. You wanted to be the highest paid Defensive player in the League, they didnt want to blow up their Cap, they need draft picks to basically rebuild. So they trade you to a great situation and the Bears give you everything you wanted and your pissed?

  17. Good, I hope his comments are bulletin board material for the entire Raider offensive line.

  18. What a lot of people don’t understand is that the Raiders literally didn’t have the funds to pay him a year early like he wanted. The Raiders wanted to pay him this year and even more the following year when they’re in Vegas, where there’s no state income tax.

He wanted out early and the Raiders obliged, so now he’s pissed.

    SMH.

    That’s awesome.

You know what else was awesome? Watching Khalil Mack fight through 3 guys to sack Cousins on Sunday, and him strip sacking Cousins again to start the second half.

But keep touting your cap space. It was a bad trade for Oakland, any way you slice it.

  20. This is going to be great to watch. I just cannot wait to see Gruden’s face as Carr goes down…. Carr goes down… Carr goes down…

However, I also think it would be funny to watch Carr drill mack in the face-mask with the football as he rushes. See if he can get the ball stuck in his face-mask.

  21. There’s nothing worse then a cheap imitation Raider fan..that’s not what makes up Raider Nation nothing hides loyalty .
Even a band wagon wishy washy cheerleader fan

    HA HA HA

  22. Well, the Bears have Mack and no QB, nor capital to sigh a decent one to a long term contract. Good luck with that.

So says Gruden & Son-of-Al. And yet somehow they had more than enough funds to throw a potential truckload of guaranteed $$$ at Antonio Brown if Brown hadn’t gone completely bonkers.

  24. So last year against the Pats and Trent Brown, he played in 85% of the defensive snaps and ended the game with 1 tackle. If you’re really as good as you think you are, go ahead and line up against Brown again this game – I guarantee you that he will play on the opposite side of the field from Brown.

  25. The raiders opted not to pay the best defensive player in the league and traded him. So, yeah, he has a right to be salty and I am sure he will make Derek Carr pay for those transgressions.

  26. Why does it surprise/bother people that a player wants to play well against his old team. What do you expect him to say? “I hope I suck this week. This game means nothing to me.”

I’m sorry, but the Raiders have no QB, nor capital, nor a team. No coach. Not even a home. Even good luck won’t help that.

  28. Should be looking forward to the super bowl, considering the price tag. The Raiders are an AFC team. Some of these guys aren’t Einstein’s. Mack quit on the Raiders. He never showed up.

  29. I saw firsthand what the Vikings D did to the Raiders, and secondhand what the Bears D did to the Vikings — I feel sorry in advance for the Raiders.

  30. So have we loser!! You quit on your teammates. Too bad the NFL and Goddell are cowards and you’re playing in London. You should have to come to Oakland and receive the welcome back a true traitor deserves.

Dumb comment! The Raiders had a bottom tier defense even with Mack playing at a Pro Bowl level. Do you think they get better by paying him $20+ million a year? The money saved from not having to pay him and two 1sts will bring in a lot of talent.

  32. Mack is not salty at all he is just looking towards playing his former team just like any other player would. so keep hating on Mack because your team didn’t get to keep him or wasn’t able to trade for him. Its just a game!

    Raiders have 25M
    Bears have 18M

Which team would you prefer to have with those numbers?

  34. If he said that he wasn’t looking forward to it especially, people would be saying he’s a. lying, b. afraid, or c. looking for some other reason.

Who knows what else went down there? No one commenting, that’s for sure.

  35. Let’s hope Mack doesn’t drop tears like last year’s playoff game when his expectations fizzle out for this contest.

  36. Well, Mack is the one who forced a trade out of Oakland. So you can bet that the Raiders are looking forward to this game as well. How embarrassing would it be for Mack if his team loses to the Raiders?

  37. I never realized he was a greedy millenial until the hold out. Now I cheer against him like I would AB, just another me first guy. I hope he holds out on the Bears with a few years left on his deal too. Also, comparing his contract demands to AB is hilarious, AB had 2 years guarenteed and Mack wanted 6.

  38. The real bandwagon fans are those who don’t know jack about Raiders history and attach themselves to a politician like Gruden who earns his popularity by giving high-fives to naive tools in the stadium. Meanwhile Gruden takes his guaranteed 100 mil. and laughs all the way to the bank.

  39. Like it or not Clelin Ferrell will always be saddled with this trade as someone drafted to make up for the lost production. And through 4 games Clelin Ferrell has largely been invisible.

  40. Mack is not salty. He’s not mad either. He just has a point to prove. He is one of the most destructive defensive players the NFL has ever seen. And he was told that #1 He didn’t deserve to be one of the highest paid players, and #2 We aren’t going to even consider paying you a high contract. So he’s looking forward to showing the raiders along with all of London and the US exactly why he’s one of the most destructive forces to come along.

  41. The bears gave up a lot to get Mack and are paying him a Kings ransom. Their window closes this year or next, if it hasn’t closed already.
You don’t win by over paying a future hall of famer.
I hope Mack has a mundane game and gnaws on that.

  42. Do you think it’s possible that during negotiations with the Raiders that they pulled out some negative things to drive the price down and that Mack remembers all of those things?

  43. “AB had 2 years guarenteed and Mack wanted 6.”

WRs are much easier to replace than elite pass rushers.

  44. “The money saved from not having to pay him and two 1sts will bring in a lot of talent.”

In theory, yes. Still have to make the correct choices. The smart move was to move him, but lets see how they execute. Trades can be win/win, but most just have to pick a winner.

  45. Such a childish attitude. The drafted him and paid him well, then traded him to the team that was willing to give him the megabucks contract. He should be grateful to the Raiders.

A Homer you didnt say that about AB while he was with the Pats….guess you haven’t learned the meaning of hypocrisy…

Mack has every right to feel disrespected only Homer Vision trolls would not see this.

Do you not want more money in your job? Who doesn’t? As much as these guys love the sport, if player A is getting more than you, and you’re better, how can you begrudge these guys getting as much as they can from the owners? If the owners can’t afford it, they wouldn’t continue to pay these crazy salaries.

Hey, you forgot to say “Son-of-Al”

  48. If you have a job and you’re at the top of your profession, and when your time for promotion comes they tell you that they’ll only pay you like somebody that’s Pretty Good. Not at the top end of the profession, which by all metrics available you are elite at your position, but 80% or so of your market value — You armchair saints who love your boss wouldn’t want to prove them wrong at every chance? You wouldn’t want your new employer, who gave you what you feel you deserve — to Prove that he’s worth the investment at every possible moment that is also highlighted by outperforming your former employer?

You guys have so much more dignity than everybody else. Pat yourself on the back.

  49. Its funny how the raider fans want to blame mack for a holdout & so on. The raiders should have paid him, he is truly special, definitely a once every decade type of player & maybe 2 decades. The raiders fans forget that he is a proven commodity just like Cooper. A team can have all the draft capital they want, its meaningless until a player produces. The raiders had a good nucleus with carr, cooper & mack. Gruden messed it up. Other teams figure out how to pay elite players, the rams did, so have the packers, the seahawks, etc. So you fans that want to diminish mack’s feelings, too bad for you on sunday. The raiders may win but mack is going to have an impact that should have been for you guys.

  50. However, I also think it would be funny to watch Carr drill mack in the face-mask with the football as he rushes. See if he can get the ball stuck in his face-mask.

Funny that you think Carr has the accuracy and strength to do that.

  54. In this thread:

    – Morons that think players shouldn’t have to honor their contracts
    – Morons that think that the Raiders should’ve overspent on Mack, destroying their team salary structure for *one* player
    – Morons that think the Raiders would be a better team, and have a better chance at playoffs/SB/future wins with him
    – Morons that think that the Carr/Mack/Cooper trio was a ‘core’ that the team could build on.

You guys are morons. Just felt the need to point that out.

On that last point — Please. The team hasn’t been relevant since Gruden’s first run. No 1st place finishes in the AFC west since 2002. Awful chemistry. The team needed a shakeup, and they spent $100 on Gruden to do it. If he says he needs a different mix of players, you get different players. Mack could’ve stayed through the transition but he wanted money. The team let him go. Now you haters need to let it go, too.

Hayes was commonly referred to as “the Judge” and also as “Lester the Molester” because of his bump and run coverage. He had a distinct stance, crouching very low when facing the opposing wide receiver. He was also known for using Stick um before it was banned in 1981 by a rule bearing his name.

I’m old enough to have watched the Raiders play when they had REAL HC’s like John Madden & Tom Flores. Gruden couldn’t begin measure up to them on his best day (or on their worst). In fact Gruden in his first Raiders stint wasn’t even as good as Art Shell in Shell’s first stint.

Gruden is nothing more than a flimflam artist who is good at sound-bites and only sorry Gruden groupies like you (as opposed to knowledgeable Raider fans) fall for his act.

And the bears established themselves as a legitimate playoff contender and arguably the best defense in the nfl. I think I’d have to side with the playoff contender here. Without mack they’d be ok in Chicago but he puts them in the elite class of defenses in the league.

  60. Mack should get as many sack as Von and Chubb did week one. Haha ZERO!!! Also, what he doesn’t realize is the Raiders have been looking forward to this game even more. Too bad it wasn’t in Oakland.

  61. Didn’t any of you Raider fans ever play football? You always want to beat your former team.

Khalil Mack is very, very close to Derrick Carr, but Mack is going to be a rolling ball of butcher
    knives in merry old London.

  62. If I was Derek Carr, I’d take a page out of the longest yard and drill him in the NUTS!!

  63. Mack is merely hyping up and promoting this game, which is just great for the back story and ratings. He probably doesn’t harbor any animosity towards his former teammates. That said, this is understandably a “personal” game he circled. In Oakland he was 4 X Pro Bowl and 1 Defensive Player of the Year, and the Raiders was “his team”. Then suddenly Gruden comes in and decides he’s not worth the money and trades him. I can see Mack going go full beast mode after Carr, making the high light reel, to remind Gruden his big mistake. Mack is definitely psyched up for this matchup.
