PFT’s Week Five power rankings

1. Patriots (4-0; last week No. 1): A tradition unlike any other ended in Buffalo on Sunday; another tradition — the Patriots beating the Bills — continued.

2. Chiefs (4-0; No. 2): A hard-fought win over the Lions will give this team even more confidence when it’s time to play the Patriots or, you know, the Patriots.

3. Saints (3-1; No. 7): The last two wins alone put Sean Payton at the top of the list of coach of the year candidates.

4. Cowboys (3-1; No. 3): They’re not as good as we thought. They’re still pretty good.

5. Rams (3-1; No. 4): They’re not as good as we thought. They’re still pretty good.

6. Seahawks (3-1; No. 9): They’re as good as we thought, and they get a chance to prove it against the Rams on Thursday night.

7. Packers (3-1; No. 5): The offense had its best game of the year on the same night the defense was exposed.

8. Bears (3-1; No. 10): Mitch Trubisky, Chase Daniel, Jay Cutler, Rex Grossman. With a defense this good, it doesn’t matter who plays quarterback.

9. Bills (3-1; No. 12): Yes, they lost. But they proved that they are a serious threat to the AFC’s power structure.

10. Browns (2-2; No. 18): How will the Browns handle adversity? Pretty well, apparently.

11. Ravens (2-2; No. 6): The first two games suggested that it will be a special season. The next two games made it clear that they’ll have to scratch and claw for whatever they get this year.

12. 49ers (3-0; No. 13): The last undefeated team in the NFC still has plenty to prove.

13. Eagles (2-2; No. 20): The NFC East is officially back in play.

14. Lions (2-1-1; No. 19): They had an elite team on the ropes; next time, the Lions need to punch them through.

15. Chargers (2-2; No. 15): Even the team that seems to be in a close game every week wasn’t in a close game against the Dolphins.

16. Jaguars (2-2; No. 16): Minshew Mania is fine, but Fournette Frenzy is the thing that will help this team win the division.

17. Titans (2-2; No. 17): The consistently inconsistent Titans win another game they should have lost, and soon they’ll lose a game they should have won.

18. Buccaneers (2-2; No. 27): Jameis Winston is playing his way into a second contract that it seemed not long ago he’d never get.

19. Panthers (2-2; No. 24): The Panthers are 3-9 since starting last season 6-2. Kyle Allen started the three wins; Cam Newton started the nine losses.

20. Texans (2-2; No. 14): A rollercoaster offseason is becoming a rollercoaster regular season for the Texans.

21. Vikings (2-2; No. 8): Sorry, Vikings fans, but if you don’t have a functional passing game you don’t deserve a spot in the top 20.

22. Raiders (2-2; No. 22): Sunday’s game said more about the team that lost than the team that won.

23. Steelers (1-3; No. 23): A win is a win is a win, but that win still came against the Bengals.

24. Colts (2-2; No. 11): Good teams that can’t soundly beat inferior teams at home may not be good teams.

25. Giants (2-2; No. 25): Danny Dimes dropped a deuce on his division rival, but they need to beat someone better than Washington to climb this ladder.

26. Falcons (1-3; No. 21): How can such an impressive collection of overpriced talent fail so consistently to produce victories?

27. Jets (0-3; No. 30): Sam Darnold is close to returning, which could give the Jets a chance to begin to dig out of the lower reaches of the NFL’s hierarchy.

28. Broncos (0-4; No. 26): That win in Super Bowl 50 feels like it happened 100 years ago.

29. Bengals (0-4; No. 28): The Red Rifle had become a pop gun.

30. Cardinals (0-3-1; No. 29): Kyler Murray has lost as many games in a month as he did in his entire high school and college careers.

31. Washington (0-4; No. 31): Later this week, Jay Gruden will name which of his quarterbacks will be running for his life against the Patriots.

32. Dolphins (0-4; No. 32): Good news — Josh Rosen played pretty well. Better news — he didn’t play well enough to derail the tank train.

  1. I’d rank the Bills just a tad lower, honestly. In typical Bills fashion, we have a lights out unit(defense) married to a struggling offensive unit. Allen will turn it around, he looked like a completely different QB over the first 3 weeks, he’ll learn and adjust. But, the play calling has been seriously suspect. Can’t get plays in, they don’t stick to what works, they don’t run the ball. Gore should have totes the rock for 20-25, and probably would have won you the game with that. Nope, let’s keep taking shots down field. Look at that drive after half, take the underneath stuff, run the ball, and you go 75 yards for a TD. Dabol was just trying to show off for his old boss. The bigger game is this week, though. At the bye at 4-1 is much different than 3-2.

  2. Florio I thought you said there was no way the Saints could continue winning with just defens when you made weekly picks

  3. The Browns are better than the Bills. They’ve also played a real schedule and you really can’t take a team with Josh Allen at QB seriously as it relates to postseason.

  4. Both losses, Bill O’Brien has said “we made a bad call” at his press conference. Cal McNair needs to jettison O’Brien now! This team has enough talent to win games and the division, even with temporary coach.

  5. Niners beat TB on road by double digits, TB beats LA on the road by double digits. Niners at 12, LA at 5.

I see you aren’t very good with simple things like transitive property.

  6. A 13 spot drop for one loss???? That has got to be a record. Don’t get me wrong, the cellar team doesn’t deserve to be in the top 20, but does that mean you had them overrated???

  7. Lions will win the NFCN. Not afraid of GB. Chicago’s defense will make it interesting but the rest of their team is a goat rodeo

  8. How is New England Number 1 in the Power Rankings? They have had the easiest schedule of any team and barely scraped by the Bills, who are atrocious offensively. Kansas City has played much tougher opposition and come away with wins in games they probably should not have won (yesterday’s game being a good example).

The Patriots bias on this site is ridiculous……

Umm, they allowed their 1st TD defensively (barely) last week on a QB sneak and they, um, are the defending champs at 4-0.

It’s not their fault ratings are dropping, they’ve destroyed the NFL and so many teams blow.

    Thank you.

  10. “The Browns are better than the Bills. They’ve also played a real schedule and you really can’t take a team with Josh Allen at QB seriously as it relates to postseason.”

Disagree. Browns are mouthy, have looked bad and teams like that usually fall apart when they can’t back up their talk. Mayfield is no or little better than Allen.

Bills at least have an excellent defense and some good players on offense. If they had a decent QB they would be in the playoffs at the very least.

  11. “How is New England Number 1 in the Power Rankings? ”

Wow made it 14 whole posts before a KC fan started sniveling about the mean ol’ Pats. When the champs are unbeaten they stay on top of these lists that’s how it works. Come in to Foxboro later this season and get a win and they’ll earn being #1, until then the Chiefs are still an also ran who lost to the Pats twice last year

    _____________________________________________________________
The Browns schedule has not been far off from the Bills, If not easier.
The Browns got trounced by the Titans.
Beat a Luke Falk led Jets team, Which the Bills beat with Darnold as the starter.
Lost to the Rams…Which are not as good as the Patriots team that barely beat Buffalo.
Beat the Ravens(Who only had wins against the winless Dolphins and Cardinals)

Josh Allen has had a higher completion %, Two more td’s, and has taken less sacks than Mayfield this season. Allen has two 4th quarter comebacks and two game winning drives compared to Mayfield’s zero. Not to mention Mayfield has better weapons to work with and yet Allen is 3-1 and Mayfield 2-2. You can’t mock Allen when your own QB isn’t as good.

No… The Browns should not be ranked above the Bills.

  22. “The last undefeated team in the NFC still has plenty to prove.” Apparently even more so to you. Every other ranking on every other service has them in the Top 10. And since you have Cleveland ahead of them we already know your pick for next Mon night, right?

  23. Hahaha. Florio. Funny guy:

“23. Steelers (1-3; No. 23): A win is a win is a win, but that win still came against the Bengals.”

If it was that easy to crush them 27-3 with 8 sacks etc why did you pick the Bengals to win this game.

  24. Florio, I find your comment about “the last 2 Saints games should have Sean Payton at the top of the list of coach of the year candidates” an interesting one. The offense certainly played well against the Seahawks, but the defense won the game against the Cowboys and Payton is supposed to be Mr. offense. I would also suggest that BB could be in the discussion as well, given his defense has only allowed one TD in the first 4 games.

  25. You people crack me up. “Bills offense is Atrocious”. Dude, that offense put up ~350 yards on the BEST defense in the NFL. They OUTSCORED the NE offense. I get it, the game was a bit of a throw back with the defenses playing air tight, but 3 picks and some questionable play calling and game management lost the game for the Bills. Hell, I bet if Allen finishes the game they score on that drive they decide to go for on 4th. I mean, if you want to say that the NE got run over by a bad offense, then be my guest, but I respect what they did more than that. Every yard was hard earned.

  26. The Lions could have made a statement against Kansas City, and then they remembered they were the Lions and blew it. No one takes them seriously.

It’s between Chicago and Green Bay for the division this year. Pop off now while you can.
    ************************
There is no such thing as a moral victory. The plays were there (TD overturn, fumble at goal line twice) and stopping them on 4th and 8. They didn’t do it. However, what they did do was hold the most explosive QB in the NFL to have one of his worst (if not the worst game) of his career. They just gave the NFL the blue print to slow them down (your welcome).

Go ahead sleep on the Lions but this team is better than most people think and will win the NFCN.

  27. I overheard somewhere the Vikings have over 250 million in contracts to Cousins, Theilen, Diggs and Rudolph. A quarter billion was on full display last weekend. Gross.

Cousins should go to somewhere like Miami where there are Zero expectations and he’ll thrive, until he faces a decent team or if there’s a playoff berth on the line. Then he’ll Kirk it up.

    ______________________________________

Let’s be real here, if the Steelers don’t even go to the stadium the day of the Patriots game they would’ve only scored 3 less points than they did by actually being there. The Jets and Bills put up more of a fight.

On top of that most of the teams who’s record you’re pumping up have that record because they had Pittsburgh and Cincy on their schedule already and all went 2-0 against them.

Agreed – and apparently no heart. That was as lackluster of a performance I’ve seen from the Ravens defense in a long time. Losing like we did in KC is one thing, but to get steam rolled by the Browns on your own field is something else. That’s where the leadership element comes into play – like T Sizzle, Reed, Ray. Time for you to step up Earl and be the man

    +++

    Yes, he will.

  42. 25. Giants (2-2; No. 25): Danny Dimes dropped a deuce on his division rival, but they need to beat someone better than Washington to climb this ladder.

Not a Giants fan but this comment makes no sense. Yes the beat Washington this week, but last week the beat the Bucs (who are now ranked #18) . . . so they have already beat someone better than Washington.

Additionally the Cowboys, who are 3-1 (1 game better) are ranked #3, but shouldn’t the same logic apply to them? Shouldn’t they have to beat someone better than the Giants (ranked #25) to climb this ladder (or not fall down it)? When the Cowboys beat the Giants they were led by Manning and Florio had them ranked 31st after week 1 and week 2. So one could argue that prior to Jones taking over the QB position for the Giants they were the second worst team in the league, ahead of only Miami another of the Dallas Cowboy’s win. Additionally this week’s rankings now have the Redskins ranked 31st, which means one could argue that the Cowboy’s three wins have come against the three worst teams (at the time) in the league, who have a combined record of 2-10 and an overall point deficit against their competition of -199. That is not an error those three teams have accumulated a combined negative point differential of -16.6 pts/game. The only thing that is helping that to not be even larger is that the Giants and Redskins played each other, so the Giants picked up a +21 points for that game. Toss that +21 victory against Washington out and the per game point differential would be -20 points per game. Dallas right now is a paper tiger and if they lose to GB this week they should drop out of the top 10.

You can’t yank a team out of the top spot that is undefeated. It’s not bias, it’s logic.

KC aren’t exactly dominating either. Mahomes is playing out of his mind, but the defense is just ok. Detroit gave up 14 points on one fumble or there is no way KC win that game. They were lucky. To replace an undefeated team the team that moves up has to play better than that.

If not for a dirty headshot, we’d have a new #1

    ——

Did you watch the game? Josh Allen was awful.

  63. As a Broncos fan I hate to say it but the Broncos are too high at 28! Probably 30 or 31 is more appropriate. Guess it is time to tank for Tua!

  64. This list is stupid. The Redskins were thrashing the Eagles, beating the Cowboys, and were on the verge of comeback against the Bears before Keenum’s bonehead jump for a first down. That means the Skins are basically as good as three playoff teams. They should be no lower than 10th on this list and placing them 31 is a complete travesty.

  65. It’s comical that all these Pats fans are complaining about bias calls in favor of the Bills. Personal foul on Allen that’s offset by a penalty, face mask on Gilmore that’s flagged and then picked up for no reason. Two different instances of intentional grounding on Brady, no call. Jumping over the center on a field goal attempt, no call. And let’s not forget all the gratuitous holding calls on offense that they get away with every week. Yeah they favored the Bills all right, let’s see your list.

  66. HOW ARE THE COWBOYS #4??? Their wins are over the Dolphins (worst team in NFL), Redskins (worst team in NFC), and the Giants before Eli got benched. They just lost to Teddy Bridgewater in a game where the Saints didn’t even score a touchdown. Are you kidding me??

I Lol at the philthy fans. They live and die with these rankings. The L that gave the Falcons their only win this season came at philthy’s expense. Not to mention the 2-2 overall record, and the struggle to beat a winless Washington. How can any reasonable, logical person ever think they should be ranked higher? Worst fans by far.

    __________________________________________________________________________

Sounds like someone is a little more upset with these rankings than they’re letting on…

So was Brady and he’s the goat. As bad as he played Allen still had a chance to win until he was knocked out. The stage was too big for him but he’ll learn from this. He’s not going to play a top defense every week.

There’s the Vikings ranking everyone has been waiting for.
    —–
And in a week from now, both the packers and vikings could have the same 3-2 record.

I’m guessing you will come up with some sort of excuse/point about how the packers 3-2 record is far better than the vikings 3-2 record.
    ____________

Well, when you factor in that the Packers have already beaten the Vikings in a head to head matchup, I guess…….yeah.
Most people would deduce that the Packers are still better.
But Hey, lets wait and see if we even get there first, okay?
    —-
I’m shocked. A packer fan claims that their potential 3-2 record is way better than the vikings 3-2 record. (and yes, I understand the tie-breaking procedures. Please note you have to use a tie-breaker to calim the packers 3-2 record is far better than a vikings 3-2 record.)
Also please note I used the word COULD. Not will. Not guaranteeing. Just a simple possibility of COULD.

  72. The Browns are better than the Bills. They’ve also played a real schedule and you really can’t take a team with Josh Allen at QB seriously as it relates to postseason.

    ——————

The Browns lost by like 60 to the Titans, right?

  73. 25. Giants (2-2; No. 25): Danny Dimes dropped a deuce on his division rival, but they need to beat someone better than Washington to climb this ladder.
    ————————————–
Not only did the Giants beat someone better (the Bucs), the Steelers are two slots higher with a single win over the equally hapless Bengals…

  74. Jumping over the center on a field goal attempt, no call. And let’s not forget all the gratuitous holding calls on offense that they get away with every week. Yeah they favored the Bills all right, let’s see your list.

Not sure about the gave mask but jumping over the line is NOT a penalty unless you get a running start.

If you just leap without a running start it’s legal

  75. This goofy Lions fan with the Trubisky is garbage name has been jumping to conclusions his entire life.

He has an unhealthy obsession with the Bears and Trubisky because the sweep from last year still stings and there are many more sweeps coming.

Don’t sleep on the Lions……the entire NFL has been sleeping on the lions for six decades and nothing is different about this year.

  77. Cousins needs to channel his inner Redskins-era confidence. No team with the talent they have for pass catchers should be this impotent.

  78. Browns and Ravens both 2-2 and SF 3-0. Both teams ranked higher than SF

Clara fans once again(yearly) think they are so good they aren’t even worried about the Seahawks. What alternate universe are they living in….after 3 games and being doormats picking in the top of the draft year after year somehow September qualifies you for the playoffs??

    ——————————————————-

Says the schmuck whose squad barely beat the teams the Niners handled and just won against the Cardinals? Overrate yourself much?

  80. We have never seen a Patriots’ defense this dominate in the Brady-Belichick era. It brings new meaning to Homeland Defense. They rank 1st for takeaways with 10 interceptions, 1st for scoring defense, 2nd for pass defense, 2nd for rushing defense, and 1st for conversions against. They have allowed an average of 6.8 points per game and no passing touchdowns. For those that still don’t get it, they held the best offense in the league last season to only 3 points in Super Bowl LIII. They will only get better having just played the AFC’s third best defense.

  81. i honestly thought the cowboys were the best team in the league (i am a chiefs fan). last game really surprised me. but i still think they might be, at least the most balanced team in the league. staffords arm looked pretty amazing for most of the lions/chiefs game. that game could have gone either way. mahomes is awsome and taking the league by storm, but watch his last two games, he is not superman. and i am guessing teams are just going to start trying to hurt him, hope not but…

will be interesting to see what the 9ers do and if the ravens recover

    ______________

    Tie breaking procedure?
    Are you serious?
You make it sound like I’m citing some sort of technicality to assert that the Packers are better than the Vikings.
They actually played each other in a head to head matchup.
A matchup that led to the Packers beating the Vikings.
That’s no tie breaking procedure, that’s a simple fact.

And as for playing the COULD game, anything and everything is quite possible in our world:

Kirk Cousins COULD become a Hall of Fame QB.
The Minnesota Vikings COULD win a Super Bowl.
A Barney COULD make a coherent argument for once.

    See how that works, Chief?
But, then the dull thud of reality comes crashing down.
    Ouch!

    A Tie breaking procedure?
    Are you serious?
    ———-
    Why yes I’m serious.
If the packers are 3-2 and the Vikings are 3-2 it’s called a tie.
Using the official NFL tie breaking procedures, GB wins the head to head tie breaker.

And this shocks a packer fan?

But the point is IF they both finish 3-2, it’s a tie.
I’m not claiming some far fetched theory about winning a super bowl.

    Got it ?

  86. We see what happened in Jacksonville with Garner Minshew, and we see that Pittsburgh’s backup QB Mason Rudolph can play. We know what Cincinnati can do with Andy Dalton at QB. Why don’t we try to find out what the Bengals can do with Ryan Finley? What on earth are they trying to hang on to? Last place? How many playoff victories does Dalton have in his career? Nobody knew what Garner Minshew could do, including the Jaguars. I guarantee you Finley is a heck of a lot better than Dalton.

  87. Lions look improved in year 2 under Patricia. The new offensive scheme meshes better with what Patricia is trying to accomplish on defense. That being said the NFC north may not have the best team in football, or even a top 5 team, but top to bottom is arguably most competitive. They are going to beat each other up, and until I see the Lions either run the ball effectively against MN or Chicago, or pass block effectively against either team, I have my doubts about those games. Lions have not matched up well against either defense last year and O line personnel is largely unchanged.

    ==================

I don’t know what NFL you’re following but sound like a desperate closet Lions fan. The Lions cupcake schedule is over and they’re not capable of competing with the Bears, Packers and Vikings. Their dream schedule has come to an end and now the divisional sweeps begin.

  102. 8. Bears (3-1; No. 10): Mitch Trubisky, Chase Daniel, Jay Cutler, Rex Grossman. With a defense this good, it doesn’t matter who plays quarterback.

    ————————————————————————

Yes it does. Just wait until the playoffs…if they make it

  103. So the Vikings offense was bad on the road, twice. Understandable to rank them low, but there is no way you can say with a straight face that the Panthers, Jags, Titans, Bucs, and the Texans are better teams than the Vikings. That is absurd.

SO the Cowboys who have only beaten teams that have not won (#s 25, 31 and 32 on your rankings), and have lost to the only “real” team they have played are 9 spots ahead of the Eagles who just defeated the Packers.. makes sense.
    ===========================================================================
3 wins is more than 2 wins. And one of your 2 wins is against the same team as one of their 3 wins. Math is hard. It’s even harder when you’re a philly fan.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
By your logic the 49ers should be number three. Taking into consideration the opponents makes for a more accurate power ranking – right? I guess I would be confused by simple logic too if I had spent the better part of 25 years waiting on a playoff win like Cowboys fans have..

  106. Let’s be real about the Steelers. The combined record of the 3 teams that beat the Steelers is 10-1. 7-1 against teams other than Pittsburgh. 3 of the top 12 teams, 2 of the only 3 unbeaten teams. And arguably could have or should have won the games against SF and Sea. So they’ve lost 3 times, but to 3 of the better/best teams in the NFL.

  107. After a few days of digesting last weeks games, it’s clear the that the Minnesota ranking is a huge overreaction to ONE bad game on the road against a very good team. The Vikings have the best rushing attack in the league and a top tier defense. I still hate cousins but he is serviceable in regular games that don’t matter. I’d put this team at 15. All other NFCN teams above them.
