Todd Gurley seems to be getting frustrated

The Rams can try all they want to spin this thing positively. The reality is that running back Todd Gurley is no longer a centerpiece of the team’s offense. And Gurley seems to be getting upset about it.

He had a career-low five carries in Sunday’s 40-point outburst against the Bucs, who scored 55. For the season, he has 49 rushing attempts and 11 pass receptions in four games. That’s an average of 15 touches per game.

Through four games in 2018, he had 94 touches (23.5 per game). Through four games in 2017, the year Gurley was named the NFL’s offensive player of the year, he had 106 touches (26.5 per game).

Clearly, he’s not the player he recently was. Whether it’s a knee that has an “arthritic component” or a conscious decision to de-emphasize his involvement in order to save him for later in the year, Gurley doesn’t like what’s going on.

He didn’t say it during his press conference in advance of Thursday night’s game at Seattle, but watch his demeanor and listen to his answers. He’s currently not interested in talking to the media, about anything.

The Rams also weren’t interested in adding his final exchange with reporters to the transcripts that the team so diligently disseminates on a near-daily basis. Gurley’s transcript omits a question regarding whether Gurley playing alternating series is the coach’s decision or the player’s decision and Gurley’s salty answer to it.

“I think you asked this question before, so take the answer I gave you last time,” Gurley said.

The reporter pointed out that he didn’t recall ever asking that question.

“I don’t remember giving you the question either,” Gurley said, as the press conference ended.

It’s a tough situation for Gurley. Whatever the reason for his dramatically reduced role, his role is indeed dramatically reduced, and he seems to be working through the uncomfortable process of coming to terms with the fact that his best days have ended — and that his time with the Rams could be ending sooner than later, and possibly as soon as March.

  1. Other teams have caught up to the Rams and McVay. Teams are now realising that if you disguise your coverage until 15 seconds left of the game-clock (when McVay gets out of Goff’s ear) you can confuse Goff and force him to make reads quickly, which he appears to have difficulty doing.

Further to that, McVay’s offense contains a lot of window-dressing. There’s a lot of ghost motion, movement and audibles that really don’t affect the play at all. McVay knows where he wants to go but attempts to confuse the defence. Defensive Coordinators have figured out the Rams offense and it’s showing. T offense is reliant on Gurley being Gurley and as of late, he’s not been doing Gurley-ish things so the offense is suffering as a result.

  2. I think that his involvement in the offense is perfect as is. He looks Explosive …

  3. Well, his knees are made of Utz Cheeze Balls, and so the Rams are probably trying to manage that. When only one of your wheels has functioning brake pads, you try not to step on the brake too much.

  4. That knee must be more serious than we’ve been told, he’s been terribly underutilized given both his skill and his pay grade.

  5. The Rams are in an awful spot. They signed what was the best RB in football to a very large deal and the entire offense ran off and through him. They can lie all they want but his knee is done and it is very obvious. The rams look like pretenders this year and what’s even funnier is that they continue to use a play action based offense and they dont and cant run the football anymore. This will only get worse and eventually Goff will be exposed as well as McVay.

  6. Cap hell is cap hell. The mistake was not quietly dealing Goff in the offseason and drafting one of these QBs.

I warned of the risk of buying up all those FAs and wasting draft picks.

LA will be in a serious decline and a fade from here on out.

BB fleeced them in the Cooks deal, they overpaid and have rented Suh, Talib, and then had other guys in there who were either overrated or really greedy (Marcus Peters, Joyner, etc), and there wasn’t really money there.

I would have kept Joyner and tried to quietly deal Peters or not even acquired Peters in the first place.

They were spending so much on FAs, I was wondering if they were cheating the cap.

  7. Rams are in a pinch now. Offensive line isn’t what it was, They can’t coast like the Patriots in the AFC East because Seattle and Clara are right with them. They reason why the Rams have had the Seahawks number the past 2 years was all because of Gurley. He terrorized the Seahawks defense non stop relentlessly. It will be interesting to see what McVay comes up with now that he doesn’t have the option of #30 right, left, up the middle, and swing pass in the flat against Seattle Thursday.

  8. Should be grateful he’s making so many millions for such a limited contribution and keep his mouth shut

  9. Its the shot to the knee he took against KC last year…….knew he would not be the same after that hit.

  10. They scored 40 points. Is he trying to maintain that they would have scored more points if he had more carries? The fact is he has a chronically arthritic knee and it isn’t going to last very long. He should be grateful that they’re trying to extend his career.

  11. He clearly hasn’t been right since before the Super Bowl last year.

And without Gurley running the ball, Goff is looking even less like a true franchise QB than during the Super Bowl. I never understood the hype about Goff and probably never will.

  12. This is where we will all see the real Sean McVay. Is he the real deal or just another fad? Last year the Rams were clicking because Gurley was amazing plus the Rams had three solid WRs. Now with Gurley apparently injured, we will get to see if the team clicks in all cylinder again. Let’s see if McVay is capable to make the needed adjustments to make this team a contender again.

  13. You can take one look at that score and box score, and the question is, “why didn’t that team run more?” It controls the clock, slows the other team down. Who lets their team become so one-dimensional?

And why did they let go of C.J. Anderson, again? Talk about perfect on-the-field chemistry.

  15. He should immediately do the Bizarro World Melvin Gordon….The Full AB-frozen feet, helmet doesnt fit & then my wife is having a baby salute to Jalen Ramsey.

  16. not to be that person, but there is a reason my patriots took Sony Michael and Damien Harris when they did. Gurley had the MILES on him at UGA including his ACL surgery. Sony was their second back as was Nick Chubb. Harris was a role player like Sony behind Josh Jacobs..

The MILES on Todd’s knees are catching up. The Rams better hope they have a succession plan, or they could be in DEEP trouble.

  17. It is clear that he has a chronic knee issue. Cash your checks and enjoy life, Todd. Keep your health or you’ll regret it down the line. If you’re good enough to make a living playing football, I don’t blame you if you check out after you get your guaranteed money.

  18. Have you heard his press conferences, Media asks same stupid questions over and over. I wouldn’t want to talk to them either “How is your knee?” Is that why you are not getting as many carries.

  19. If you look at last year his knee fell apart about a 2/3’s into the season. It would be wise of McVay to use him sparingly until December (or earlier if they just need to get into the playoffs) to make a decent playoff run. Or it could be RB’s have a very short shelf life, he is close to being done and no longer a constant viable option, if the Rams weren’t stuck with such a large amount of guaranteed money contract they probably would have cut him then tried to sign him for a much lower contract.

  20. Gurley is under orders to be quiet about the real reason(s), as is McVay, so their frustration is bound to show up in pressers. Who can blame them? The reason is obvious but the team continues to deny it.

  21. I have an arthritic knee, I’m older than Gurley, and I am not a world class athlete. I could have run the ball more than 5 times. LOL

Next time anyone wants to question why owners don’t want to sell out the franchise to pay RBs, look up Gurley. He seems like a great person, but not nearly worth the $$$.

  22. Can the people who are telling him to keep his mouth shut reference what they are referring too? Because it’s not this article. This article has no mention of any public comments he gave against the team, it’s coaches, or the league.

    Am I missing something here?

  23. It sucks to be hurt. He’s electrifying when healthy but we haven’t seen that in a long while. But he hit the jackpot by getting that deal he signed.

  24. “This is where we will all see the real Sean McVay. Is he the real deal or just another fad?”

…Ask Kirk Cousins and Jay Gruden what their thoughts are on this!

  25. @navyvandal: Gurley had a little over 500 carries in 3 years at UGA and that’s not a lot of “miles” for a 3 year starter. Michel and Chubb had more “miles” partly because they played 4 years and the OC ran Chubb much more than Gurley. Gurley never had more than 29 carries in a game. I believe his issues are not from “miles” in college but an injury in the pros. As a Georgia fan, I hate to see it but injuries happen.

  26. He’s not the same RB either. They can’t depend on him because of his knee. Now they’re stuck with him through at least 2020. He should be happy he’s getting fewer touches. It’s not like he’s never getting the ball. He’s still getting it over 20x per game. I wonder if he’ll start pulling a Jalen Ramsey and ask to be traded. #smh

  27. That’s why they gave him the deal. It’s all about the team going forward.

Are there incentives in the deal he is salty about? Still has made a ton, he should get over it.

  28. Gurley is going to have a monster game against the Seattle D, aka the Legion of Bust. And then everything will be fine again. Fingers crossed. Seattle is one of the few LAmbs opponents I root for.

  29. Oops, I meant Seattle is one of the LAmbs opponents I root against. I guess I haven’t had my morning coffee yet.

  30. This Team gave up 55 points at HOME! AT HOME! To the BUCS!

They should run Gurley into the ground, if for no other reason than to keep the other team’s offense off of the Field!

Patriots ruined this team in the SB and the effects are plain for all to see.

Well, it’s obvious. We’re dealing with true badasses here. If Gurley were standing right in front of these people, they’d tell him to shut up and cash his checks, and definitely wouldn’t mumble and stare at their shoes.

The Pats and Buffalo are 1 and 2 in over all team defense at the moment.

New England sure didn’t look like they were coasting last week in Buffalo

  33. They scored 40. They swallow 55. I don’t see a team now in the NFL to be able to win if their D swallow 55 points. Not even the Chiefs. So I believe that not Gurley’s knees should be McVay’s biggest concern right now.

  34. I’m confused. Why wouldn’t the Rams ride Gurley while he can and wants to? He’s getting $15M/year and if they’re considering cutting him after the season then take what you can get while you can get it. They should have played him more in the Superbowl. You don’t get these opportunities often.

  35. His team was down 21-0 early on and had to pass a lot to get back into it. It happens. I’m sure they would have run the ball a ton if they had been up 21-0.

Without one of those turnovers the rams are in the game. Without two of them they have a great chance to win. Secondary was terrible for sure, but the turnovers were the reason the score got so out of hand.

  37. Rams are far from impressive. The only key victory came when the brees got hurt and the saints were unable to regroup mentally afterwards.

  38. If he’s actually done so is the Rams offense. If he can still do it but theyre saving him they’ll be ok. Id be more concerned with an Aaron Donald defense giving up 55

  39. Gurley is running pretty well it seems. But he looks like he gets up from the ground slowly after every play, and walks back to the huddle, it seems like he knows only has so much time on that knee and he is trying to prolong the deterioration. It’s pretty sad to see this actually.

  40. Good thing they overpaid for him already. Wish they were more transparent with his injury instead of fleecing people like in super bowl. He should have been listed as Out.
