Matt Barkley feeling comfortable and playing free

Matt Barkley signed with the Bills at the end of October 2018 and he made his first start at quarterback less than two weeks later.

Barkley’s limited time in the offense didn’t prove to be a major obstacle to success. The Bills throttled the Jets 41-10 with Barkley going 15-of-25 for 232 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

With Josh Allen in the concussion protocol, Barkley may be closing in on another start this weekend. He said on Wednesday that he’s feeling a lot better prepared to fill that role against the Titans than he did against the Jets last year.

“I think this is the most comfortable I’ve felt with an offense at this point and I’m playing free really,” Barkley said, via the team’s website. “I’m taking what the defense gives me. Taking shots when I have to, but when it’s smart to, not really forcing anything.”

Allen was limited in practice on Wednesday, so he may wind up playing this weekend. If not, Barkley will get a chance to show what he can do as a starter with a full grasp of the offense.

  1. Barkley is an extremely capable backup for the Bills. He doesn’t have the mobility of Josh, but he has 7 years worth of experience in the NFL and a good understanding of the offense which is always a plus. They can win with him, but they have to be on top of their game defensively like they were against NE. The Titans are no slouch of a team.

…the opposite of Allen vs the Patriots. When healthy, JA needs to work on this for sure.

  3. Barkley will beat Tennessee this week just like he beat the Jets last year…great back up QB….

  4. Barkley should start until the Bills lose games because of poor QB play. This situation mirrors what is happening in Carolina.

No he shouldn’t. He should start games until Josh Allen is completely healthy.

Once Barkley wins, I could see the headlines now. Start of a QB controversy.

He started and won last year and there was no controversy.

  7. In theory they might even be BETTER with Barkley assuming he can avoid mistakes. Allen is fun to watch but he’s incredibly raw. For every play his athleticism makes he’ll have a negative play where he throws a bad INT or gets himself knocked out of the game by trying to run over defenders.

I know some people are incredibly high on him but he’s got serious turnover issues to address if he’s going to still be starting in a few years once he’s not a big-time running threat any longer. To point: He was 3 TDs vs 3 interceptions COMING INTO the New England game. So, even when he’s playing well otherwise he’s still turning it over too much.

  8. On a team with a shutdown defense a quarterback who can play without turning the ball over stands a good chance to be successful (whoever that may be).

Coming into the New England game they were 3-0. Also everyone always fails to mention his rushing TDs as if somehow they don’t count. I totally get your point and agree on the turnover issues. We are hoping he can grow and reduce that number. If not, he won’t last, but in no way are better in the long run with Barkley.

  10. Do people not realize the Titans also have a top 5 defense? I would be a bit worried about Allen’s running ability. If he is out, the Titans know they don’t have to worry about that. Since when did everyone start thinking Matt Barkley is good? Because he (& not at all his top 5 defense) beat the Jets? Lol cmon. I would very much expect him & the Bills offense to struggle. This game has 10-7 or 12-9 written all over it.
