Jerry Jones compares Dak Prescott to Tom Brady

The Cowboys have two Hall of Fame quarterbacks, and Tony Romo owns most of the team’s passing records. Dak Prescott is the next in line, with a chance to put his name in the Ring of Honor a long time from now.

So Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked on his radio show Friday: What former Cowboys quarterback does Prescott most remind you of?

Jones’ answer was surprising.

“Oh, I think he’s neither. I really do,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, referring to Romo and Troy Aikman. “I think he’s more like [Tom] Brady. Now, I’m not going to. . . .We know Tom Brady, and he’s no Tom Brady. I didn’t say that. But the point is he will evolve and is evolving into a guy that will beat you. He will beat you with different circumstances and different players and different type teams. He will be on teams that have better defense than others. He will be on teams that have better protection than others. I think we got us one in Dak.”

Prescott has played 52 games. He is 35-17, completing 1,067 of 1,602 passes (66.6 percent) for 12,019 yards with 76 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.

In Brady’s first 52 starts, he went 40-12, completing 1,053 of 1,703 passes (61.8 percent) for 11,570 yards with 80 touchdowns and 43 interceptions.

What separates the two, of course, is Brady’s Super Bowl titles.

He already had two rings after his first 52 starts and was on his way to winning his third later in the 2004 season.

Prescott is only 1-2 in the postseason and has yet to get his team to the NFC Championship Game.

That’s what caused Stephen Jones to pause when told what his father had said.

“Obviously Dak’s got some Super Bowls to win, and I sure hope that’s coming our way,” the team’s executive vice president said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “We want to be on that train with him when he starts to hopefully put these Super Bowl wins together. Certainly, he has the ability to do that.”

Hahaha. So they are the same except one has won superbowls and they other hasn’t won anything. It like comparing a Lamborghini and a pinto. They both use gas and have 4 tires what’s the difference. Dont embarrass yourself Jerry.

Yeah, and it’s one heck of a big EXCEPTION, LOL!!
( for the record I did read the article)!
So blessed to have the best in New England!

  4. I don’t know what to do with this.

On the face of it, it’s a nuts comparison.

But statistically, Dak was marginally better than Brady through his first 52 games. Can’t deny the numbers.

Weird. Meaningless. And weird. But mostly meaningless.

  5. Hmmm every time the oline has a problem Zek and Dak disappear … and that line is breaking down for having to carry them. Josh Norman “ Anybody can do that “

Well the playoffs are kind of what counts. And for the knucklehead who talked about “two yard Tom and the quality of his receivers” let me say certain recreational things must now be legal in your state.

Yes but the second season is the playoffs. The real season. The playoffs are everything… The playoffs separate the men from the boys.

    No pun intended.

Disagree, he’s better than two yard tom Brady. You give Prescott the receivers Brady has and he’d do even better!

But yet your one year dynasty aka the Seahawks couldn’t stop him in the 4th q of the SB.

  9. Jerry Jones has lost his mind, (there is no proof that he ever had one but that’s a separate argument). I have saying the same thing for 25 years now, the Cowboys will never win a Superbowl without a compotent GM and they dont’ have one as of this moment.

  10. Do you guys think Brady wouldn’t be doing even better right now if he had both Jason Witten and Amari Cooper next to Josh Gordon, Phillip Dorsett, Sony Michel, and Julian Edelman? It’s not like Dak didn’t have Dez Bryant. While Brady had Gronk for many years, he missed the entire 2016 season and was rarely healthy. Tony Romo was closer to Brady than Dak. Let’s be real here.

  11. Jerry just be partying hard again because this is delusional. Dak isn’t even in the same realm of talent that Brady is. It’s actually disrespectful comparing an average player to the hands down GOAT to ever play the position. I hope Jerry keeps thinking like this so he signs Dak to an overpriced contract. Sorry Jerry, America has a new team.

    #kisstherings #goatqb #goatcoach #goatfranchise

  12. You cannot compare Brady first two years vs Zak because the pass interference rules were different as Brady’s first two years you could mug the receiver.Today you can’t touch the receiver . Thank you Bill Polian !

  13. Funny how the white QBs aren’t sweating their contracts while Dak is being made to beg for a contract. Goff, Garappolo, Stafford, Dalton, Foles, Cousins, and Tovers are all paid no problem, yet none of them have the stats or consistency that Prescott has.

  14. Some trolls will jump on this as per usual, but Jones is comparing them in a general sense, not in terms of quality and accomplishments. In fact, if you watch the two on tape you realize they are very similar in terms of passing styles too. Like Brady, Prescott doesn’t have an NFL elite arm, but both have arms that can get the job done in quick throw situations and when a deeper throw needs to be dialed up they can line the mechanics up for a pretty throw. Prescott and Brady also take what defenses give them and attack with discipline through the air, rather than trying to force the ball into tight windows or attack deep for the sake of it. They also prioritize avoiding interceptions. Prescott isn’t as good within this style of play as Brady, naturally, but the style is very similar.

  15. If and perhaps when Prescott, or Mahomes, or Wilson, help their respective teams win their 3rd Super Bowl, you can start to compare them to Montana. If/when they win a fourth, you can consider comparing them to Brady. Until then let it go. As of right now, none of them are even worthy of being compared to the likes of Elway, or Marino and his zero rings, or Favre, or Rodgers, or Roethlisberger, etc.

  16. Obviously Didn’t Jerry wasn’t watching the Saints game when Dak got beat by the back up Bridgewater. Dak needs the stars and moon to align to win. He’s more about inflating his personal stats for a big paycheck than the team. I’m not paying $40 million a year and put my team in cap hell. I’ll take my chances at free agency or the draft.

  17. Let’s be fair to Jerry. He already said he’s not really comparing Dak to Brady but just their style. Since it’s Jerry so people are ready to pounce on it. This is click bait stuff.

    I can’t believe I’m defending Jerry Jones!

Lost by 2 points at their house. You act like we got blown out and beat by a rookie qb. We got beat by a better HC and better game plan. Michael Gallup I hope will be back this week, He could start and be the number one wr on 23 other Nfl teams. No excuse though, we should have won. Dak is a 4th quarter comeback qb as PROVEN. He is no 40 mil qb now dammitt! $28 mil is a FAIR and Great offer …… the boy is greedy….

  19. Prescott is improving, but he is heavily reliant on the Cowboys great offensive line. He’s got that and a great running game. That makes it really hard on defenses and Prescott is the beneficiary.

Once Prescott signs his mega contract, the Cowboys chances of winning a Super Bowl drop steeply. Their window is closing fast.

  20. Brady improved exponentially over the years. People forget that he was not nearly the QB when he won those early SBs that he is now. Actually he may have peaked in thosr seasons when the Patriots lost the second SB to the Giants (2011) and the first AFCCG to Denver. He carried the team those seasons. Their defenses were suspect and their offense had injuries. But that SB agaibst Atlanta was a masterpiece and I assumed a swan song.

  21. Im not a brady fan, but i think stats dont tell the whole truth. Bradys was much better, and better looking. I bet he smells better too. Stupid sexy brady!

  22. Who is “Danny Dimes?” .. is that what Giants fans are calling him after 2 games?

Matt Cassell looked good for a season, so did RG3, and Vince Young. Slow down on giving the guy a cute nickname.

Remember when Giants fans wanted Gettleman’s head? That was only a few months ago.

  23. Just a reminder: Tom Brady led the league in TD passes his first full season (2002), with 29. Which goes to show a couple things:

    1. Tom Brady was really really good from the get-go, not just 2007 onward and

    2. The reason Dak’s numbers compare well to Tom is that QB numbers in general are way up from when Tom Brady started playing in the early 2000s.

The QB numbers started to jump in around 2007-2010, which was a combination of Polian’s changing the DB rules in 2004 (because the Pats kept beating them) and the NFL changing the rules to protect QBs.

  25. Uh, after four years as the starter, Brady had three rings. So their fingers look a little different.

I refer you to the key moment from the deflategate court case:
Judge Berman: “What evidence…on January 18?”
NFL lawyer Nash: “No, not for that specific game.”
Judge Berman: “The Wells report relates to only one game. There is no finding in this case that there was anything done by Mr. Brady.”

NFL won the 2nd court, not on Brady’s guilt but a narrower de-novo appeal (effectively a new case) that merely considered Fraudger’s CBA right to suspend any player he sees fit.

  27. Lots of quarterback had better stats than Brady had his first few years, but none of them are near as good as Brady overall.

  28. This is an unfair comparison. Brady started playing back when they were still running the single wing offense. Times have changed. And, as far as we know, Dak doesn’t cheat. As I said, it was an unfair comparison.

  29. I like Dak. Dak is an above average NFL QB and good enough to help you win the SB. But I have yet to see Dak thrive in a variety of offensive schemes. I have yet to see the quick release and consistent quick decision making that make Brady so effective and make the Patriots already good O-lines look even better than they are. Dak may develop these. But until he does, let’s hold off on the comparisons.

  30. DAK > WENTZ .. GOOF … LYNCH (LMAO) AND EVEN WILSON! P E R I O D ! HECK THROW IN NEWTON AS WELL.
WENTZ GOOF AND WILSON GOT PAID! AND SO? THEY DO ANYTHING SINCE? but but but lets throw the blank check at Dak?
Dude will NEVER SEE $40 mil per and DOES NOT deserve that much! $30 mil MAXXXXX !! JERRY!

  31. As a 30+ year Patriots fan, I don’t understand why people are getting bent out of shape over this (Jerry gives a lot of reasons to feel that way, but this isn’t one of them). He very explicitly stated the comparison was as to the way the two QBs are capable of winning games– not stats or playoff success.

Prescott is a fun QB to watch, and it doesn’t seem like he ever gets too high or too low– just even keeled. He’s also got a lot more focus on him given the team he plays for and large fan base, and seems to be a good locker room guy and decent person. The league needs more players and face-of-the-franchise guys like him.

If he is like Brady, pay him like Brady.
    —————————-

That’s the problem he’s trying to pay him like Brady which is a discounted contract favorable to the team. Dak wants market value.

  34. I like Dak. But let’s see him complete three third and tens in an NFC Championship game in overtime, or come from double digits down in a Super Bowl before we compare him.

  35. The league is a long, long way from 2001 when Brady started playing.

It is much easier to produce today than when Brady started.

They have changed rules to favor offenses. End of that story and the apples and oranges comparison.

If you gave Brady Ezekeil Elliott, he had better numbers as well.

  36. Disagree, he’s better than two yard tom Brady.
    ————————–
    vancouversportsbro

3 x 2 yards = 6 yards, not even enough to get first down.

Which moron told you dink n dunk is about completing passes?

  37. I think the MAJOR difference here is that Prescott doesn’t have Belichick as a head coach. Then again, neither do the other 30 teams. Go Patriots!

  38. I think the MAJOR difference here is that Prescott doesn’t have Belichick as a head coach.
    ——————————————–
When Brady took over, Pats were 0-2.

According to experts, Pats were not even among top 5 0-2 teams.

Do you have any clue, as a pats fan, what on earth you are talking about?

  39. A few differences between the two. Brady does not want to be the highest paid quarterback in the league. Brady is one of the best quarterbacks to run the 2 minute offense. Brady has won mulitple super bowls, and he does not need a top running back to win a super bowl. Not even Hall of Fame member Troy Aikman has won a Super Bowl without Emmitt Smith, nor is Aikman as good as Brady with the 2 minute offense.

As a lifelong Cowboy fan I have one thing to say, “Jerry–just stop”.
    _____________________________

As another lifelong Cowboy fan, Jerry will never stop he’s the Official Dallas Cowboys
Mouthpiece. I guess with all the money he has, he thinks it gives him the right to say the
    most ridiculous comments.

  41. If Jerry is gonna heap that kind of praise on Dak, he should be paying that dude. How can a guy that has all of that money and success that pre-dates football not know when to shut up?

  42. Brady led the league in TDs his second year. People look at the stats in today’s context and think Brady wasn’t that good early in his career. He was top 5-10 in every passing stat from his first season on. The rules changed after 2003 thanks to Manning, Polian and the Colts complaining which allowed Manning to break the passing TDs record in 2004.

After being a ball-control offense with a strong defense his first few years, the Pats built a team to take advantage of the rules changes favoring offenses a few years later (in 2007) and they basically broke football, while Brady threw for a then record 50 TDs. He has dominated statistically ever since with a level of consistency only Manning, Rodgers and Brees can compare to. In fact, since 2010 Brady has better stats than Rodgers despite the claim some make that he is carried by his team. And obviously he continues to win at a rate that no other QB in history has come close to.

Dak has some Brady-like qualities but let’s not compare the stats when the eras were completely different.

  43. Their will never be another brady Nice try jerry but talking nice won’t get dak to take a brady hometown discount.

  44. call him two yard Tom all you want but damn all those rings plus possibly more on the way I’d take that over Dak any day

  45. BTW,patsfan4lifesbchamps :

Jets, Bills and Dolphins scored total 85 or less in 6 games against Pats in each of last 3 seasons, that is how Pats defense got top 10 PA, Brady basically carried the team to SB in each of last 3 seasons.

  46. Take away the Lombardis,
    ———————————
    49ersfury:

Good defense in playoff is about taking away big plays.
Brady is the only QB in NFL history who doesn’t need big plays to score 24 or more.
It is much much harder to score 24 points with small plays than with big plays.

  47. After comparing Dak to Brady, Ol’ Jerrah was immediately placed in the Concussion Protocol.

  48. I have an idea… let’s see if this team can win more than a Wild Card game as that ability has eluded them for over 20 years. Then figure out who to compare your QB to.

  49. The comments, read in their entirety, are hardly controversial.
    —————
No, but it makes it pretty clear that they don’t teach or understand the laws of physics in Texas, since the laws of physics prove there was no tampering or
    “ cheating “!

  50. They may have similar playing styles and roughly the same statistics over their first 52 starts, in the regular season, but the difference of course is in the post season. Championships are the only thing that matters.

In the Super Bowl against Atlanta, the Patriots were down 28-3 late in the third quarter. But Brady didn’t panic. He simply kept executing long, methodical drives, even though the result was only a single field goal. The effect, however, was that it wore down the Atlanta defense and kept the New England defense fresh. The Braves’ mistake in the game was in coaching, play calling and quarterbacking–they employed a quick-strike offense to jump to a seemingly insurmountable lead. But that strategy gave the Patriots much more time to work with. Thus in the fourth quarter, the tired Atlanta defense couldn’t play the same coverages, or with as much intensity, and Brady took advantage, marching down the field for score after score. Meanwhile, the rested New England defense was able to stifle the Atlanta offense, which kept trying to use its quick-strike strategy. Ryan didn’t use the play clock smartly, calling for fast snaps after only a few seconds. That resulted in short unsustained drives and three-and-outs, and left extra time on the game clock for Brady to work his magic and lead his team to victory.

Prescott is incapable of anything like that. Brady knows the game far better than he ever will. It’s won in the fourth quarter. Brady and Belichick shrewdly let Ryan and Quinn exhaust their team for three quarters and mismanage the clock in the final quarter, and stole victory from the mouth of defeat. I seriously doubt that any Dallas team could have accomplished a comeback like that, but then no team coached by Landry or Johnson, or led by Staubach or Aikman, would have been down by 25 points going into the fourth quarter of a Super Bowl.

That said, it seems to me that Jerry Jones’s comparison of Prescott to Brady is really more of slight to Garrett, implying he’s not comparable to Belichick. It’s like saying, you have a Super Bowl quarterback, are you a Super Bowl coach?

Jones is putting all the pressure on the coaches and players this year. He has not offered Garrett an extension, nor has he paid Prescott or Cooper. He has paid Elliott, which I think was a mistake because the star running back couldn’t even rush for two yards a carry against New Orleans.

The game against Green Bay this Sunday will show a lot. Remember that divisional playoff game against the Packers a few years ago? That was in Prescott’s rookie season, and he surprisingly led the Cowboys to a 13-3 record, a divisional title, a first round bye, and home field advantage throughout the playoffs, and had led Dallas to a lead in the game and the first opportunity to advance to a conference championship in years. But they left the Packers with around 30 seconds on the game clock in the final minute.

Rodgers made up a play in the huddle, moved downfield, and put his team in position to kick the game winning field goal. Prescott isn’t capable of something like that either.

  51. Anyone who thinks that Brady is the main reason that the Pats have done so well and therefore if Dak compares with him, so will the Cowboys, is delusional. Compare coaches, ownership, bending the rules, cheating, division competition, and all the other factors that have led to the Pat’s successes.

  52. He basically is saying that Tom Brady is merely a game manager, playing behind a good defense and not taking too many risks. I’m sure he would like for Dak to take a salary as low as Brady’s as well.
