Jason Garrett’s abusive language penalty elicits joke from Jerry Jones

AP

Jason Garrett received a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after he spiked the challenge flag in front of side judge Scott Edwards after a blown call late in the third quarter.

“Obviously, I didn’t handle that situation as well as I should have,” the Cowboys coach said. “I knew we were going to get the play because I saw it. Unfortunately, had to use the flag [to challenge] there. He made that decision to throw a flag on me.”

Garrett said Edwards “apparently didn’t like how I threw the flag.”

According to a pool report from referee Ron Torbert, though, Garrett was penalized for “abusive language.”

“Oh, I hope the little darlin’ didn’t hear something he hadn’t heard before,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “We should all have stopped the wheel over there if he got [upset] over abusive language.”

The Cowboys appeared upset about the officiating after getting 11 penalties for 124 yards, though they didn’t come right out and say they were upset about the officiating.

“It’s not my place to share my opinion about that,” said Garrett, who surely will share his opinion with the NFL’s supervisor of officials, Al Riveron, on Monday morning.

Garrett’s penalty followed a 27-yard completion from Dak Prescott to Amari Cooper in front of the Cowboys sideline. Edwards ruled the Cowboys receiver did not get both feet down before going out of bounds, forcing Garrett to use his final challenge.

The play was overturned on replay, but the Cowboys lost 15 yards on the penalty. They faced a first-and-25 from their own 42, but Prescott completed a 26-yard pass to Ezekiel Elliott on the next play.

“It was just a big play in the game,” Garrett said. “I knew we had used the flag once, and I knew we were going to have to use it again to correct their error. When you do that and the first one doesn’t get overturned, you’re out of challenges. I knew that was the situation. We had to use it in that particular situation to correct the mistake that they made. Didn’t handle it well. Our team handled it really well, though. I don’t know if you saw the rest of the game after that. We completed a 26-yarder on the next play, and we went right down and scored. Our team did a really good job handling that adversity.”

  1. Gee, it’s not like the refs have ever stolen a game from the cowboys when they played the Packers before.

God, the agenda is so obvious it’s ridiculous.

  2. I am at my wits end with the officiating across the league. The officials are so beyond horrible I honestly don’t know how much more football I will be able to suffer through. This league is more worried about new fans and don’t care about long time fans or the depreciating product.

  3. Really, Jason, I expected better from you.
    I’m so disappointed.

You can be sure Mr. Landry would have never behaved like that.

  4. You cowboys fans are ridiculous. The refs were literally HANDING the game to the Cowboys in the 2nd half with all the BS calls against the Packers.

The Cowboys just couldn’t deliver on all the gifts the refs gave them.

  5. Everybody knows there are some things you can’t say to a ref. It didn’t help that he had been riding him most of the game. Frankly, I could never be a ref because I’d be throwing a lot more flags. The refs can be clowns sometimes but I wouldn’t want that job because on every play players are whining about not getting a call or whining about getting flagged. They can never win.

  6. Football is the one sport where the refs are suppose to keep their own emotions in check and not allow it to dictate a game. This isnt MLB or NBA. That ref is clearly in the erong sport. And also the “too bad if you dont like my call throw the flag” exhange also should be looked into by the league.

  7. Abusive language? When 1 official forces you to use 2 challenges on BS calls you can expect some “abusive language”. Especially when you factor in the frustration of having corners mug your recievers blatantly all night and not flagged for it

Stole a game? I swear there is a contest to say the most ridiculous thing and you are the winner. The Pack was up 31-3. The refs then started gifting Dallas everything they could just to make it semi competitive.

  9. The refs were a joke on both sides. The roughing the passer call for a sliding hand on the side of Dak’s helmet was laughable. Definitely not the NFL’s best crew officiating that game.

  10. @SuperTed handed to them how? Replay clearly showed a false start on the snap into Cobb. If Dallas had scored a TD on that play with replay showing a false start and it wasn’t called Pack fans woukd’ve had a fit and rightfully so. And the hands to the face wasn’t exactly inconspicuous. And the roughing the passer call for any contact to the head is ridiculous but it’s the rule. Every team has been called for that BS in a game before.

  11. The amount of crying and moaning from this cowboy team and it’s fans is incredible. The refs tried to give you the game in the song half and your overrated weak QB choked it away. I’m sorry your team wants everything given to them, but dear God this crying is absurd.

  12. The officiating was questionable. Cowboys in the red zone, Cowboys fumble the snap and Packers recover-ball given back the Cowboys. Next play Packers intercept in the end zone-ball given back to the Cowboys. Prescott scrambling and runs for a first down. Packers called for roughing the passer??? Cowboys given another 15 yards. It seems a lot of bad calls benefited the Cowboys which made it a much closer game.

It is what Goodell does. Pats fans know this very well since NE is often way out in front in some games. The phantom calls come soon after or allowing the opposing D to maul the receivers.

  14. Jason Garrett was called because he said, “oh, sugah”. The referee thought he was being asked out on a date. Jerry Jones knows he has Jason for himself.

Yeah right, go cry some where else. Cowboys got two straight penalty calls to score a TD after turning the ball over twice to the Packers in the red zone. What we’re finding out about the Cowgirls is that they looked like world beaters when they beat the Giants, Redskins and Dolphins but don’t look so good when they actually have to play NFL teams like the Saints and the Packers

  16. The zebra’s missed lots of calls on both sides of the ball. That happens in games. Yes, Prescott had 500+ yards, but he also gifted the Packers 3 interceptions, killing drives. The Packer’s made the defensive line of the Cowboys look terrible, some of those holes were big enough to drive a bus through. Garrett’s clock management was at best, highly questionable.
As a Packer fan it was nice to go into AT&T stadium and beat the Cowboys. Interesting stat, the Packer’s are undefeated in AT&T stadium!

  17. I just said last week and all last year, stop Zeke and Dak won’t beat you. He will rack up those garbage yards, but the game is over by then.

    Team is built wrong.

    No right end, dline joke.

  18. Green Bay 78 yds in penalties
    Dallas 124 yds in penalties

That’s one sided. Not a fan of either team but when they play, that seems to be a trend. Not only the penalties called but plays overturned and not called. Fishy.

  19. Yeah the refs literally give Dallas a TD and you claim the refs are against them lol.

  20. I get so much enjoyment from watching the little man syndrome on here from all the Cowboys haters. You all are showing your great abundance of bad takes. Keep it up boys and girls!

  21. Jerry never reads this material. He pays no attention to the vast majority of the nfl believing Garrett is not a head coach. Dak is good but not top half and certainly can not be compared to Brady. Passing numbers were hugely different as was the game 16 years ago.
Quarterbacks are elite or not. And seldom do they go from good to elite. Look at the new young qb they immediately light it up or not.

  22. The officials gave the Cowboys a TD with double late flag penalties to take away turnovers which would’ve resulted in the game being a massive blowout. Cowboy fans still going to complain… wow

  23. I wonder if daks arrogant self mentioned spicy nuggets at all in his post game interviews. What a tool.

  24. I keep forgetting that a lot of Cowboys fans aren’t from Texas, which explains the sissy whiner comments you read here. Texans don’t whine, they just hand out beat-downs. I’ve seen it. Must be the fans living in Maryland or some such awful place to do all that whining.

  25. As long as a team has a time out to burn they should be able to challenge. Being wrong once and right once should not mean you are out of challenges for the entire game. Time is an issue but they quit having the replay time limit because getting it right was more important than how long it took. As is, a team can be successful 3 times and then be out of challenges. That has never seemed right.

  26. You clowns talking about “garbage yards” and “garbage time” and “garbage points” are embarassing yourselves trying to sound like you know what you’re talking about and not sorry to tell you that you don’t. Garbage time isn’t a certain point or time in the game it’s how the defenses play that determines garbage time. Cowboy’s last drive was garbage time. Defense playing off covering deep trying to keep Dallas from getting back in it with big plays and giving up underneath knowing even if Dallas marches upfield off underneath throws the clock is still running costing Dallas the time they need to actually complete a comeback even if they do score on that drive. GB was up by 14 when the uncalled DPI…I mean pick happened and they were still playing tight coverage. A little too tight in fact. GB was up by 17 when Cooper scored the last TD and that throw and TD wouldn’t have happened as easy as it did in “garbage time” as again GB would’ve been more defenders covering the deep zones and the replay clearly showed they were playing press man. So to recap you all have no idea what you’re talking about. If you’re gonna talk trash at least say something that makes sense

  27. Abusive language ? I’m pretty sure these refs have heard worse in other games. C’mon what happen to the phrase sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me .

  28. I can understand Garrett’s frustration. The Packers defensive backs were
obviously playing more physical than the Cowboys. That’s a coaching decision
or style. The Cowboys were on the receiving end of small yet significant
penalties. The call on Austin for holding was an obvious bad call from a ref
20 yards downfield. Even the announcers criticized the call, adding that it looked
as if the Packers DB was holding. This was a huge penalty.
The interference call on Brown was a cheap call but it was a call you will see. This is a result of
oversight where the NFL central demands such calls.
Where the rub is …is when you see DB’s and Wr’s receivers being
physical. I thought the refs were very inconsistent in this game,
Like all refs ..once a game gets behind they start to punish the leader
with tricky tacky Calls …that is exactly what happened. The refs tried to
help the Cowboys late after the damage was done. That way statistically
    it looks good.
Bottom line the Cowboys got out played. The refs were not consistent
    but that is the NFL.

  29. Dallas fans claiming the refs were in favor of the Packers crack me up. Roughing the Passer on Prescott when he scrambles for a 13 yard gain. Hokey DPI when Green Bay intercepts in the end zone? The refs basically gave that TD to Dallas.
Goes both ways you disgruntled Cowboy fans!

  30. Packers dback King should have been called for obvious illegal contact on the receiver before his pick in the 4th quarter. The resulting packer field goal pretty much ended it for Dallas. NFL officiating is garbage.

  31. tylawspick6 says:

    ————–

Funny how everyone thinks the refs are against their team. I have always felt the opposite of the above statement. It seems anytime the game is close, NE magically finds a yellow flag or replay review in their favor. Not sure it started with the never used before or since “tuck rule,” but that is certainly the most infamous one. Then there was the DB muggings in SB vs. Carolina and the “catch rule” against Steelers. Shall I go on?

As a Saints fan, I am 100% certain the refs are blind, especially if they are playing the LA Darlings.

  32. “Dallas fans claiming the refs were in favor of the Packers crack me up. Roughing the Passer on Prescott when he scrambles for a 13 yard gain. Hokey DPI when Green Bay intercepts in the end zone? The refs basically gave that TD to Dallas.

    ______________

DPI? The one thing GB didn’t get called for oddly enough was DPI. You mean hands to the face which was obvious in the replay.

  33. The officiating was especially bad. Both teams got some bogus breaks but there were plenty of ratings calls in the 2nd half. (Close games get better ratings/more viewers)

  34. DPI? The one thing GB didn’t get called for oddly enough was DPI. You mean hands to the face which was obvious in the replay.

A glancing blow when you are trying to tackle someone is NOT Roughing the Passer! Sorry disgruntled and bad sport Cowboy fan! It’s tough to be beaten by a better team and have to admit that your team was simply beaten by a better team.

  35. Anyone who watched the HBO show heard how foul mouthed he is. I expected more from a Princeton guy. He will never be a great coach. Hope we miss the playoffs so we can move on from him already.

  36. Dez still didn’t catch it.

Can’t wait to see what kind of whining and excuses Skip Bayless will come up with tomorrow morning.

  37. “A glancing blow when you are trying to tackle someone is NOT Roughing the Passer! Sorry disgruntled and bad sport Cowboy fan! It’s tough to be beaten by a better team and have to admit that your team was simply beaten by a better team”
    __________________

What are you even talking about? I’m not referencing the roughing the passer call. You claimed Dallas was “handed” a TD because the pick in the endzone was called back by a DPI call and I pointed out to you that it was a hands to the face penalty that nullified the INT not a DPI. And the hands to the face was clear on replay. Funny you’re here to run your mouth but don’t even know what you’re running your mouth about. I can admit when my team was beaten by a better team but I ain’t gonna listen to garbage from somebody who can’t admit their team got away with numerous DPI and a no call on illegal contact that resulted in a pick and more points. And actually yes according to the rules making contact with a QBs head is illegal no matter how ridiculous I myself also think it is you disgruntled, uninformed, confused, blind Packer fan

  38. cowboy fans are hilarious. The Packers had the game well in hand, someone called NY and told them to let the cowboys back into the game, no matter what. They couldn’t allow “America’s Team” to get embarrassed in “America’s Game of the Week”. Next thing you know, anything and everything the refs could come up with was being called against the Packers. And yet somehow, cowboy fans still seem to think the refs screwed them over. What a bunch of whiners!

  39. That’s why they should just change the challenge rule. If win your challenge. That means you or one of you coaches saw the play from a better position or with a better set of eyes than the ref. If you lose your challenge that means somebody on your team jumped the gun or you’re slinging crap hoping it will stick. Regardless, if you win a challenge you should not lose the opportunity to challenge again later. The rules should be. Each team gets 2 challenges. If you challenge correctly, you do not deduct one challenge. If you challenge incorrectly , you will lose that challenge. Problem solved!

  40. Stole a game? I swear there is a contest to say the most ridiculous thing and you are the winner. The Pack was up 31-3. The refs then started gifting Dallas everything they could just to make it semi competitive
    ——————————————
i believe they were talking about the dez catch/non-catch game

  41. Lol, everyone talking about King and his hand-checking on his INT – granted, will give you that. What about the massive DPI missed on MVS’s non-catch on the previous Packer drive? It was just as clear, not hearing any Cowboys fans talking about that. It would have continued a crucial Packers drive and brought them very close to FG range.

  42. Lol packers and cowboys and the refs didn’t know who to favor, couldn’t care less, cowboys just aren’t very good and packers will get exposed again next monday

  43. You guys arguing about the Packers and Cowboys are all missing the point. I watched three games today and in all three there was a flag after every play. Much of the time, the offense wasn’t even obvious. In the Colts game, in fact, T.Y. Hilton was called for OPI on a 0supposed pick play that he didn’t even block for. Riveron, of course, upheld the call on the challenge.

The officiating has been worse this year than it’s EVER been. It’s appalling. And the officials are calling more tick tack calls are getting angrier at being challenged for them. Garrett and the Cowboys are hardly the point of this trend, and it doesn’t matter which team you think benefitted more her, unfortunately. What matters is how bad the officiating is, how big a part of the game it is now, and how much more sensitive they’ve gotten to being challenged. It all traces back to how they’re being instructed, which is in the hands of Riveron.

  44. After this weekend of football I really don’t know who the best teams in the NFL are. All teams look very weak at certain positions that will be their downfall.

    __________________________

What do you mean by 1 official forcing him to use 2 challenge flags? He only forced him to use 1. Garrett’s bad judgement made him use the first one because the call was right and clearly upheld.

  46. Penalties didn’t cost Dallas the game. I’ll always be a fan, but this season is very much like…well, all the others. We win some and lose some, which all teams do, but we fall apart during games we should win. We lose the obvious ones against good teams, and in spite of having a great roster we are a .500 team or about one game above every year! I don’t know what coach you bring in, because I don’t look around the league and say, this guy could do something with this team, but somethings gotta change. Wish I knew what!

  47. The officiating appeared to be in favor of the cowboys. Without the officiating, Dallas doesn’t score 21 in the second half. Just telling it like it is.

  48. I don’t think as one of the most prominent owners in the league it’s a good look for Jones to be demeaning the officials that get abused on the field. That flag is rarely thrown so I would think Garrett had it coming.

  49. It’s a sad state of affairs where you expect a flag after ever big play. Unfortunately you get one most of the time.

  50. It doesn’t matter if the official has heard the offensive language in the past or not. Everyone is supposed to be treated respectfully. There happens to be a rule about it. If a player made an offensive comment to an opposing team coach and the official heard it, that official would penalize the team for what the player did. This is no different. Don’t want to get a penalty, don’t say anything offensive to the official. I for one think that the officials put up with too much comments from players and coaches.

    Truth and I am a Cowboys fan…

  52. Maybe its just me but this is how I judge the character of any football team; they never bring up the refs after a loss. It’s just too convenient of an excuse. All teams get screwed over time and they is next to nothing they can do about it. For Jerry Jones to even go to this subject exposes a weakness of the mind.

But I have also said for decades now, the Cowboys will never sniff a Super Bowl unit they hire a football GM.

  53. After Philly beat GB, everyone was lamenting the lack of GB running game. What were the critics watching that Thursday night? I wrote a contrarian viewpoint here that Aaron Jones was a tough takedown.

Yesterday: 4 TD all on the ground.

Dallas didn’t lose because of the refs. AJ ate its lunch.

  54. What NO ONE is talking about — Dak’s last pick — at a crucial time — should have been overturned. Even Perrera or whatever his name is said it was obvious illegal contact — the defender had his hands all over the receiver well past the 5 yards. The receiver had no chance. Man I wished Jason could have challenged that. Worst call/no call of the entire game.

  55. The Cowboys are complaining about penalties? Now that is golden. Their “all world’ Left Tackle injured a Saints Defensive End by continually hooking him around HIS NECK all game long last week. Guy couldn’t practice or play yesterday because of a neck injury inflicted by the Cowboys on multiple plays. Just cry a little bit, ok. And yes we know, the Packers get lots of calls.

  56. The Cowboys are 3-0 against teams with a combined record of 2-12, they are 0-2 against teams with a combined record of 8-2. They have yet to beat a team with a winning record! If that trend continues the Cowboys will be 9-7 at best and possibly 8-8 or 7-9. I love Cowboy fans crying about calls when the refs are obviously calling phantom calls on the Packers in the 2nd half.

  57. Officiating has become so bad in the NFL, it takes away from the game. But the “unsportsmanlike penatly” call was so beyond ridiculous, in my view that side judge should be told his services are no longer required.

  58. That was the best part of the game. I wish he would’ve done more so they’d have kicked him out. That Ref #3 was acting like an MLB plate umpire. Yeah, that’s what we need… confrontational and argumentative refs.

That game was an abomination of officiating. What a mess. Half of these games are over-officiated disasters to watch. Ugh.

  59. From Newy Scruggs:
Dak Prescott leads the NFL with a 132.8 quarterback rating from a clean pocket, but ranks 29th under pressure (54.0). That minus-78.8 drop from clean rating to under pressure rating is ahead of only Mitchell Trubisky (minus-87.7).

  60. The main problem with Cowboys is Jerry and son are paying a few a large amount of the salary cap (Zeke, Cooper, D-Law and $50 million for the O-line) leaving very little for back-ups and other starters like the interior D-linemen and secondary. Once Tyron was out, the Cowboys have to replace him with a league bottom feeder so now they have to keep Zeke and the TE in to chip and block the DE which eliminates the play-action game, and that still wasn’t enough. Once La’el was replaced with the rookie free agent it left Dallas with no talent to block it was a free for all for the D-Ends, Zak had a second or two to throw the ball and no check downs because they had to block to get that two seconds. Dallas is is good with no injures, but without Tyron they are pretty worthless.

  61. The Cowboys should move on from Jason Garrett. An absolute debacle at home. 12 carries only for Elliot when playing a team that is awful vs the run. Prescott……overrated QB.
