Jay Gruden fired

The Jay Gruden era in Washington is over.

Gruden was fired Monday morning after falling to 0-5 on Sunday, according to multiple reports.

The move had been long anticipated, as it became increasingly clear that Gruden wasn’t seeing eye to eye with owner Dan Snyder and front office boss Bruce Allen.

In six seasons in Washington, Gruden only made the playoffs once, in 2015, and lost in the wild card round that year. He finishes with a record of 35-50-1, counting that one playoff game.

There’s no word yet on who will take over as the interim coach for the rest of this season, but Snyder and Allen are likely to want someone who will prioritize developing rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Gruden reportedly didn’t want to draft Haskins, and their disagreements on that put his job in jeopardy. He needed to have a good season to save his job, and this season has been anything but good.

  1. While of course I agree with the firing, nothing will change until Bruce is gone.
Who would want to coach for the Dysfunctional Duo?

  2. In a just world, the front office would take responsibility for player personnel. All the strategy and tactics and inspiration in the world, the ‘Skins would still stink. Not saying Gruden is even an average coach, I have no idea. But it’s obvious that the fish stinks from the head, and that’s the owner and the GM both. Divisional foes can pretty much mark down two in the win column when looking at Washington until things change massively in the executive suite.

  3. I guess they foreclosed early, leave the key on the kitchen counter…
Kinda sad, you draft a rookie QB and fire the head coach in the same year? What I’d like to know is, who’s gonna fired Daniel Snyder?

  4. Jay didn’t deliver, and it’s a delivery business. Still, I can’t help but wonder how things would have been with a normal owner and GM. Jay is a good offensive mind and I’m sure he will be picked up. He’s right about Haskins.

  5. Naturally, Gruden takes the fall – but he is not the primary fault. Owner Dan Snyder is. He is regarded as one of the worst team owners in American sports. Snyder and even Jerry Jones, for that matter, both are master meddlers… they both micro-manage their teams and leave their coaches with little to no say. I doubt there will be any “real” coaching candidates lining up to replace Gruden.

  6. Pats did not cause Gruden to get fired. Pats continue to beat up on bottom dwellers. As a coach, Gruden was one of those. That organization didn’t do him any favors though.

  7. RIP Dwayne Haskins. Whatever else Gruden did to earn his firing, he was right about not playing Haskins. He’s not ready and the O-line stinks.

    Have fun with that.

  8. It’s not about putting him on the field it’s about wanting to work with him even though he didn’t want to draft him

  9. <> wasn’t seeing eye to eye with owner Dan Snyder and front office boss Bruce Allen.

Same refrain over and over. Gruden isn’t the problem.

  10. What a sorry franchise that’s become. I don’t disagree with JG getting the boot, it’s just one more log in the fire.

  11. U could see this coming a mile away. Eventually, when Snyder sells the team, the Redskins will be good again. He has had so many misses on free agents, draft picks, and retaining bad players, that Washington has been in perpetual mediocraty for 20 plus years.

  12. What a trash franchise. Snyder has destroyed the Redskins.

Oh well. One less team to worry about. GO 49ERS!!!!

  13. Listen this is the time too give Haskins all the 1 reps and insert in along this next stretch of games . The team needs something too rally around and dead man walking coach just wasn’t it. The rook has too learn baptism by fire. Whatever our is at the end of the season be damm the rookie has too play

  14. This firing is not going to change anything. Everything rises and falls on leadership. The one consistent thing with the Redskins failures is Dan Snyder. His leadership of the franchise has been horrific. He has not cultivated the right culture at Redskins Park because he is not a “football” guy. He needs to be a “hands-off” owner and he never will be. Money does not buy championships – hard work does.

Skins fans need to stop buying the merchandise and continue to go to home games. Every away team has a home game at our place. #firedansnyder

  15. Who would want to coach for the Dysfunctional Duo?

Depends how many zero’s are attached to the requisite ‘position to be assumed’ Contract language.

  16. Gruden is not a quitter but I can probably guess he is happy to get out of that dysfunctional franchise!

  17. Suggestion to the Redskins, hire Hue Jackson to a one year deal, he’ll insure 0-16 and pick #1 in the draft. Then they can totally blow that also

  18. whywerule. “prioritize developing” is not the same as starting.

Bruce needs to go. I don’t have a problem with letting Jay go, but not sure he was the real problem here. Who would have been significantly better with these same players. How many coaches would have gotten a win from this squad? 2 wins? Not likely many, if any.

  19. ….so the upcoming Dolphins-Redskins game on Sunday could end in a 0-0 tie (in OT) in an epic battle for 2020 draft superiority? Difficult to imagine that all of the tanking moves the Dolphins have made could still not be good enough, but it has become possible.

  20. Snyder and Allen summoned Gruden down to the office at 5:00 am to get fired. Who does a 5:00 am firing?!!? But it is not just the Snyder and Allen are world class jerks — they are grossly incompetent. What a dumpster fire.

    Fixed that for you.

Pats please get Pat Shumur fired too..

    —————————-

Pat isn’t going anywhere this year for sure. Daniel Jones has looked good enough to keep Pat around. Whether they win games or not remains be seen, but Jones has looked good enough to give hope to the current setup, especially once Saquan is back.

  23. Gruden merely the latest fall guy. Snyder and Allen are the reason why Washington remains a FUBAR franchise.

  24. None of the great coaches who have worked for Dan Snyder have been able to win in Washington, and Gruden is just the latest. Don’t even try to blame Bruce Allen either. The losing has been going on long before Allen or Gruden came to town. Allen was hired to be the fall guy. Don’t fall for it. He’ll be next.

  25. “Do the ‘skins really want to put a rookie QB, who has shown he is not ready, behind an offensive line that is also not ready?”

Yes, yes they do, because they are the Redskins.

  26. Drafting Haskins-Robbins who throws multiple flavors of interceptions per game was a stupid move by this team. The Numbskins will find that he has no game and will draft his replacement this spring.

Then the Numbskins will need an entire new team to build around him – seriously only about five players on that team are worth keeping. And the first to go should be Josh Norman…

  27. Some people just don’t understand this business. You don’t draft Haskins and then not play him. And when you’re the HC, you don’t object when the boss wants to draft Haskins. It’s not about winning, it’s about doing what the boss wants. Same as everywhere else.

  28. I guess the key card didn’t work this morning. Jay Gruden should feel grateful to get away from the clown show that is Dan Snyder/Bruce Allen. Complete incompetence from the top on down…

So what is Snyder’s won/loss record since he bought the team anyway?
    ===================

More relevant question is, does Snyder turn a profit off the Redskins every year?

  30. “Do the ‘skins really want to put a rookie QB, who has shown he is not ready, behind an offensive line that is also not ready?”

Yes, because Danny boy sees it as a way to boost ticket and jersey sales and that is all he is about.

At some point, you would think he would realize the Skins problems have zero to do with the coaches.

  31. No contaminatedthrillz the best news ever for a Redskins fan is if Dan Snyder sold the team to anyone! As an Eagles fan I had to endure Norman Braman the used car salesman before we were saved by Jeffrey Laurie.

  32. After week 5, one quarter of the league has one win or less. The Dolphins and the Jets are both candidates to go 0-16, except for the fact they play each other. Twice! And the Bengals are just hideous. I don’t know if we have any great teams yet, but we certainly have some terrible ones. And it’s not just bad coaching delivering the bottom dwellers.

  33. Millions in a severance package, gets out of a terrible organization and will get a cushy job in northern California and sunny Las Vegas with his brother, or become another retread as a HC. Good work if you can get it.

Next coach on the hot seat…Jason Garrett?

    ========

    Garrett isn’t going anywhere.

  36. So, the last time this owner drafted a QB, over the Coach’s wishes, was RG3….
    Daniel Snyder will never learn!😂

I think the 0-5 start and the video might have more to do with it than the coach of the Rhode Island Pats

  38. It’s kind of been easy to see through this for weeks. He wanted nothing to do with Haskins, he was forced on him, he looked like a man who wanted to be fired ever since.

  39. With his losing streak, he had to know this was coming. He won’t be unemployed for long. He’ll go work in Oakland for this daddy or brother.

  40. Hmmm… very little talent on the roster, a tough division, and two head honchos are tools of the first magnitude. What a golden opportunity.

  41. Note to Mr. Gruden:

    “Therefore, send not to know
    For whom the bell tolls,
    It tolls for thee.”

    ——— John Donne – 1572-1631.

  42. The NFL needs to start forcing owners sell there team if they cant run it properly You own a for example a McDonald’s and it’s not being operated to there standards. I can tell for a fact the corporation will force you to sell it. There are too many NFL teams with owners who have no buisness owning them

  43. wasn’t seeing eye to eye with owner Dan Snyder and front office boss Bruce Allen.
    ————————————————————————————
That will be his best endorsement when he gets another bite at the cherry.

  44. Bruce Allen got your brother fired in Tampa and now you.

Not sure what it is with the Gruden family and Bruce Allen.

  45. Two things:

    1. The Washington team will never be any good until they’re able to get rid of Snyder. And when they finally do, let’s hope they can find an owner who will change the front office culture as well as racist name of the team.
    2. Jay Gruden will almost certainly be working on the coaching staff in Las Vegas next year for his brother. In the meantime, he can sit back on Sundays and watch the Washington team continue to implode. (He’s got plenty of money, so that’s not a problem.) I feel sorry for Bill Callahan. I hope he’s being paid well to be the interim coach.

  46. This is funny! Every time Snyder fools with team, it cost him more to hire a new coach. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot?

  47. This is like when you have a friend who is married to a horrible spouse and they announce their divorce. Congratulations, Jay!

  48. Bill Parcells once said that the 3 things you need are; good ownership, a good HC, and a good QB. Skins are 0-3. Snyder is a great businessman, but tries to play Fantasy FB with a real team won’t be good with him

So…lemme guess. The key card didn’t work, right?
    _________
Let’s be real– whatever else he is, Jay Gruden is definitely funny.

  50. I wish Jay Gruden would go to the media and tell ALL the dirt that went on behind the scenes we never knew- The draft day arguments, Bruce Allen probably drinks more than Scot McCloughan, all kinds of stuff like that. That would be hilarious. Just because I feel like there’s an awful lot of terrible management going on, yet we never hear half of it.

    —————

I’m as much of a Pats homer as anyone, but Gruden was a dead man walking anyway. Pats didn’t cause him to get fired. If anything their performance against one of the worst teams in the league was pathetic in the first half.

There is probably a confidentiality agreement in place. In Baltimore, Vinnie Cerrato is a talk show host and he has lots of stories about his time with the Redskins. Most of them can’t be aired with full details, but I’d love to get a couple of beers in him at a party. Then again, he is a major contributor to part of their downfall so he’s probably sensitive about going into details.

Any bets on winless season between Bengals and Redskins?
    —————————————
It’s going to be tough for anyone to go winless this year. The Mighty Bagels play the Jets and Dolphins once each, the Fish and the Jets meet twice, and the Redskins and Fins play in two weeks.

My money, if I were to bet on this, would be on the Redskins. They’re a team of zombies. Maybe they can beat the Giants, if Goodell gives his permission?

As for Gruden–He was an awful OC with the Mighty Bagels. This is the guy who always had a reason to throw the ball instead of running it; I swear he justified throwing the ball instead of running “to cross them up”, but always threw it on passing downs “because that’s what you have to do.” He used A.J. Green, one of the league’s best wide receivers, as a DECOY against the Texans IN THE PLAYOFFS. Like his brother, he always seemed to want to show how smart he was instead of doing the expected and doing it WELL.
