Will Dan Snyder make a run at Mike Tomlin?

Getty Images

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has always had a thing for Eastern Virginia. Could he eventually be coaching a team in the vicinity of that general area?

Ed Werder of ESPN dropped this nugget on Monday regarding the vacancy in Washington, and regarding a certain Hampton, Virginia native who played college football at William & Mary, in Williamsburg: “In a recent conversation with someone who knows Dan Snyder well and is aware of his thoughts on potential next Redskins head coaches that any list of candidates would include: Steelers HC Mike Tomlin, Bucs DC Todd Bowles, Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy.”

Tomlin is by far the most accomplished of the group. The head coach in Pittsburgh since 2007, he’s never had a losing record. As the Steelers pile up losses in 2019, a mutual parting that allows the Steelers to avoid a buyout (and possibly to hire someone like Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy) and that hands Tomlin to Washington (possibly for a draft pick) could make sense. If, of course, Tomlin wants it.

He may be asked about it on Tuesday at his weekly press conference, and if he is he’d surely deflect and evade and ultimately say he’s focused on the job he has and that’s the only job he wants. But it makes sense to watch what happens over the next 12 weeks.

The Steelers are mired in a 1-4 start that could become their worst season since 1969. If both sides decide later this year that they want a fresh start, maybe that’s the direction in which this thing goes.

It fits with Snyder’s periodic effort to swing for the fences, from Steve Spurrier to Joe Gibbs to Mike Shanahan. The question is whether Tomlin would or could co-exist with team president and surrogate owner Bruce Allen, whose time in Tampa overlapped with Tomlin, then a young assistant coach with the Bucs.

Some things make too much sense to ever happen. This one potentially makes too much sense to not happen. Especially as Washington needs the kind of reset that only a skilled and accomplished coach can provide, as long as the rest of the organization gets out of the way and lets Tomlin do what he has done so well over the years in Pittsburgh.

  1. Oh. And the Steelers have not hired a retread head coach in over fifty years.

The Steelers hire young relatively unknown coaches they believe can lead the franchise for twenty years.

    Why fix what’s not broken?

  2. There is not a single coach who has won or been to a super bowl game that will work for dan/Bruce. Nothing spells Train wreck like that franchise

  3. How do we know the success of this organization is due to Tomlin and not to Big Ben? Is there any evidence that Tomlin has a remarkable acumen when it comes to game planning, adjustments, or situational football?

  4. Until Snyder and his sidekick minion Brucifer who is nothing more than the real life equivalent of the Mischievous Monarch King Joffrey from Game of Thrones is gone then it doesn’t matter who they hire as head coach.

Redskins fans have have grown past the splash big name hire that deflects from the cesspool that is the front office structure!

  5. Please no! There are enough reasons to not like the Redskins right now. Adding Tomlin will really hurt the few of us fans who grew up loving this team. Get rid of Bruce Allen, then sell the team Danny.
    HTTR

  6. Tomlin would be the first coach Snyder hired that I had any faith in since Schottenheimer – and I don’t have all that much faith in Tomlin.

Washington needs some powerful magic at HC to get their act together, and I can’t think of any coach who might be available to put humpty dumpty back together again.

  7. Only way Tomlin would even think about leaving for the Snyder Zoo is getting final say on personnel. That and a huge raise.
You know Danny and Bruce aren’t going to allow that.

  8. Mike Tomlin would be nuts to go to a weak team like Washington, with an owner like Snyder, when he has a better team and a kinder gentler owner in Pittsburgh.

  9. Can’t see anyone voluntarily leaving an organization as stable as Pittsburgh for that clown show Snyder and Allen have built.

  10. Makes too much sense? Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Why, by any stretch of the imagination, would Tomlin want to leave his position as head coach of one of the most respected franchises, along with infinite job security, for the dumpster fire that is Washington, where he’s likely to be fired after two seasons, due to an inevitable losing record, caused by the inept ownership and management, just because he grew up in a nearby state?

    ………………

Bruce has been allowed to hire 2 coaches. One won a super bowl, so there goes that theory. But you are correct that it doesn’t matter. It’s been a train wreck and all will fail unfortunately

  12. This is akin to saying your community theater is going to get an Academy Award winner to star in your cousin Eddie’s original play. Easy to see why they’d want Tomlinson but what could possibly be his attraction to them?

  13. LOL @ these so-called Steeler fans who want to get rid of Tomlin. He would be hired before he could get out the door.

  14. My prediction is Atlanta coach Dan Quinn is fired by Arthur Blank the day after the season ends and is hired by Dan Snyder in Washington 2-4 weeks later. Just a hunch.

Mike Tomlin wants no part of the Redskins I’m sure. He’d probably rather be an assistant with another team first.

And Todd Bowles as a possible candidate? LOL!!

  15. Mike McCarthy?!?!?

Dude has been terrible since the 2011 divisional game.

If the Steelers hire him my terrible towel is going in the closet for a few years.

  16. Hard to imagine Tomlin working for such a notorious owner as Snyder and such a chronically underachieving franchise as the Skins have been under Snyder. If available, he’ll have offers-a-plenty. More likely he ends up in Atlanta, Minnesota (where he’s worked before) or the Giants.

Can’t see the Steelers hiring Mike McCarthy. Whenever they do hire a new head coach, it will be someone in his 30s and likely to hold the job for more than a decade like Noll, Cowher and Tomlin.

  17. Have you looked at the Steelers remaining schedule? 8 and 8 is almost a given with the Dolphins, Jets, Cardinals, Bengals, and Browns twice. Remember that other than the opening week shellacking by the Patriots the Steelers have lost by 3, 4, and 2 points to three teams that are a combined 11 and 3.

So there is not going to be a historically bad year from the Steelers this year and Tomlin will not be shipped off to the Redskins. Plus the QB situation pretty much makes this a mulligan year for Tomlin.

  18. This one potentially makes too much sense to not happen.
Nope, no decent coach will want to work for that front office…so it makes zero sense that it will happen.

  19. How exactly would it benefit the Steelers to trade way / release
a head coach who has a higher winning record than their other
much revered coaches like Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher ?

How would it benefit Tomlin to leave a stable winning environment
in Pittsburgh, to go to an organization that’s been in disarray
for the last two decades, and work for an inept owner like Dan Snyder?
Why would he want to leave behind the team he helped build –
a team built to reflect his specs and vision?

These stories and rumors don’t happen by accident.
They are planted by Snyder and the Redskins, and given oxygen by
overzealous scribes pushing their own biases and agendas.

” Some things make too much sense to ever happen.
This one potentially makes too much sense to not happen. ”

    That’s laughable and unfortunate. .
Something only dum-dums and hucksters actually buy into.

  20. Why not make a run at Bill Belichick?

BB was born in Tennessee, but he grew up in Maryland while his dad was a coach at the Naval Academy, a school that BB famously loves. Maybe BB would want to finish his career near where he grew up?

Snyder could throw a 1st round pick or two at the Pats for the opportunity to negotiate with BB, and perhaps $50 million per year plus a 25% ownership stake in the Redskins would entice BB to become Head Coach, General Manager, and President of Football Operations for the ‘skins? In return the ‘skins would hand over a total of four first round picks to the Pats.

    What do you think? 🙂

  21. Um, isn’t he already under contract?! Also; every coach they mentioned is black; from Tomlin to Bienemy Smells like a Rooney Rule dodge to hire their pre-determined white coach.

I’m black, btw, and think that the Rooney Rule is complete BS and an insult.

But teams have to go through this song and dance.

  22. This is why the Redskins suck. It’s the owner. Why do you want Tomlin? The guy cannot coach. He is nothing but a cheerleader with a headset. #stairwaytoseven

  23. If the Steelers get rid of Tomlin, they will have a world of hurt after them. Don’t forget who’s name is on the Rooney rule. The PC backlash could be horrific.

  24. Why are people blaming Snyder? He’s not afraid to spend money on players. The coaches he’s hired have done a poor job along with the GM’S. The only thing he’s guilty of is not hiring the right staff.

  25. I don’t like Tomlin, but if he has a choice, he should avoid DC at all costs. In 5 years there will be Zapruder-like videos quietly released to the media.

  26. The only way Tomlin considers coming to this train wreck/clown show is if Danny Boy backs a Brinks truck up to his house and pays him an outrageous sum of money. In fact, why would any even moderately accomplished coach come here and ruin what reputation you have? Maybe they come for our “damn fine culture”…but that would be it.

  27. Ok, here’s the deal.
Tomlin won a SB with a team he inherited, the same rep that Gruden wears.
Difference is, Gruden had some success on MNF and now has another shot in Oakland to prove he’s more than just a pretty face.

So if Tomlin wants any serious fan to think he’s anything approaching a decent HC, then he needs to take this job in Washington and prove it. Oh, and first order of business: change the name. The team will never win until the name is changed. Truth.

  28. Tomlin was too smart to keep Antonio Brown around.
Can’t see him being stupid enough to hitch himself to Snyder’s cart.

  29. As the risk of being labeled a Tomlinapoligist, the Steelers finally have a defense that is fifth in turnover ratio and third in sacks….after leading the NFL in sacks last year….and now they have a duck caller at QB who succeeded a Mason jar with no experience at QB….this after having their all pro kicker last year cost them three games.

The Killer B’s. Ben, the gunslinger in a sling, Bell in hell in NY and AB in court….well at least Boswell is 10-10 in FGs.

  30. This could conflict a lot of bigots on this sight who are jealous of Tomlins success and money. News flash if he leaves the Steelers it wi be for very big money and that will blow up a certain fan in NH.

  31. There is not a single coach who has won or been to a super bowl game that will work for dan/Bruce.
    _ _ _ _

You’re right. There’s not a SINGLE coach. There were TWO.

  32. Snyder can make a run at a lot of coaches but what one in his right mind would take the job. You have a deficient roster, a young unknown quarterback and a dysfunctional front office. There will always be a better job for a competent coach.

  33. Sounds like a Redskins type of move. Lure the most overrated coach in the league away from his current gig that he should have been fired from a couple yrs. ago!

  34. ….. or Mike Holmgren

    ….. or Mike McCarthy.

Chances are pretty good the next HC in DC will be a Mike (with a big contract to compensate for the overbearing owner and overall situations over there).

  35. Colbert has given Tomlin a lot to work with over the years in Pittsburgh and he’s consistently made chicken salad out of beef tenderloin. How does taking him out of that situation and saddling him with Bruce Allen make “too much sense not too happen” when everyone knows it’s impossible for that (dis)organization in Washington to get out of it’s own way never mind it’s HC’s?

  36. This sounds just like a dumb-ass thing Snyder would do. If he hires Tomlin, he’s crazy. If Tomlin accepts, he’s crazier!

Skins fans just want Snyder gone and a new GM.

Any smart reasonable fan knows there’s nothing you can do about the owner, however, what the fans truly want is for Snyder to get rid of Bruce, anyone in the DMV who listens to sport talk radio, and or is a fan of the team will tell you since you can’t get rid of the owner there were 3 people who needed to go and in this order Bruce Allen, Greg Manusky and Jay Gruden. And I’m pretty sure Snyder is very aware of the fans feeling towards Allen, it’s talked about constantly on sports talk radio in print etc., if he wants to save the fan base and do them a solid his next move should be to fire Bruce.

    ———————————————-

The same Belichick who resigned as HC of the NYJ because he had no faith in where their ownership situation was going? Sure everyone has their price but I think it might take more full money trucks than there are in the entire Northeast and a 49% ownership stake to make him even consider it

  41. just leave them both were they are, they are two franchises that have history, great fans and the other 30 teams would rather win than watch them fix it

  42. I don’t think Washington is a good fit for Tomlin. I do think that if he were available his best fit would be Cleveland. I’m not saying Tomlin is a great strategist but he is quite good at focusing the type of attitudes/misplaced swagger found on the Browns team into a cohesive unit. They are talented but they lack focus and discipline. Tomlin would do a better job than Kitchens is doing right now.

  44. “Tomlin is by far the most accomplished of the group. The head coach in Pittsburgh since 2007, he’s never had a losing record.”

Has Tomlin been overheard saying something like “Hey – you know what I’d like to try? Losing. Like, all the time, every year, year after year. That could be just the change I’m looking for in life.”

  45. “as long as the rest of the organization gets out of the way and lets Tomlin do what he has done so well over the years in Pittsburgh.”

If history tells us anything, it’s that the Redskins brass is great at getting out of the way and letting a coach run the show.

  46. All this talk about Tomlin being too smart to take the job in Washington is hilarious. The idea Tomlin is too smart to do anything is – well… curious.

  47. Right now there looks like there will be coaching openings in Minnesota, Atlanta, maybe Miami, Houston, Jacksonville, and maybe Denver…any decent/winning (McCarthy, Tomlin and the flavor of the month coordinator) coach will wait for those jobs. If Michigan gets destroyed by Ohio State again look for Jim Harbaugh to find/be shoved out the door, a way out of Michigan. Art Briles and Bobby Petrino are both QB/offense minded coaches that Danny could get cheap and Danny usually goes offense.

Steelers will go young defensive minded coach like Salah in San Fran or Richards in Dallas.

  48. I’m not a huge coach Tomlin fan. His coaching style, while loved by the players, is too loose for my liking. MT, by all accounts is a great person, and yes, he does have a great record, but not when it counts. That said, he isn’t going anywhere until the Rooneys and he agree it’s time to go. IMO, a fresh start may benefit both parties. Tomlin, but virtue of his tenure and record, could stand up to Snyder. He, most likely, would not feel the same pressure as a first time head coach thrown to wolves, with expectations to win now. If they do part ways, I would like to see someone like Eric Bieniemy get a shot with the Steelers. The Steelers realize that first time head coaches have a learning curve themselves, and they are willing to let a coach develop instead of cut them lose right away.

  49. All this talk about Tomlin being too smart to take the job in Washington is hilarious. The idea Tomlin is too smart to do anything is – well… curious.

To be able to say Tomlin isn’t smart you would have show a diploma from a school equal or better than William and Mary and a high school graduate of The Little Sister of Mercy Middle school.your jealousy and insecurities are showing. Tomlin has accomplish more than you ever will so time to shut up.

  50. “As long as the rest of the organization gets out of the way.”

We’ve been waiting 20 years for this to happen, ever since Snyder forced Jeff George on Norv Turner. It’s not going to happen.

  51. I don’t think even Bruce Allen is dumb enough to hire Mike Tomlin. After all, Tomlin took the team with the most Pro-Bowl players and coached them out of the playoffs. But then again, that’s probably good in Washington. After all, they don’t care about winning. They just hire some coach then after five years of terrible play they’ll fire them and try to find someone else dumb enough to take that job. They are like the Bengals of the early 90s–a coaching graveyard. Anyone taking that job is effectively burying any future chance at being a head coach again in the NFL.

  52. Laugh all you want but neither teams legacy is tainted by the stench of Cheating so laugh all you want .
    ———————
We Pats fans are laughing! So, tripping an opposing player isn’t cheating?? Using steroids isn’t cheating??
    Someone has selective memory!!!

  53. I wouldn’t hire Tomlin and I wouldn’t work for Snyder. This notion that one’s a racist if one doesn’t like Tomlin is a ridiculous, vapid, Trumpian style statement. Tomlin has underachieved with what he’s been given. Simple as that.

  54. “Why not make a run at Bill Belichick?

    What do you think?”

I think that idea is ludicrous. Belichick is not going anywhere, and certainly not from one of the best couple owners to work with as a coach to one of the couple worst. Not to mention that would mean canning Allen, which Snyder doesn’t seem willing to do under any circumstances.

    *********************
Danny, is that you? we know the Skins hire staffers to post anonymously on websites to attempt to surreptitiously influence opinion, much like “John Barron”.

Tomlin is an honorable person and, even if not great, more than decent coach. He can easily get a better gig than the Skins if he wants to work at local college or high school. There is zero chance he works for George Allen. Zero.

  58. “Why not make a run at Bill Belichick?

  59. I’m sorry but Gruden benched AD game 1, out of what only can appear as spite. Guice was going to be slow in his first game back, injured immediately of course. But since JG decided to inactivate Peterson they lost that game. Would’ve won with AP. His whole team quit on him that day. He had no explanation for the inactivation. What a joke Gruden is, all the way back to his Bungles days.

  60. See most the commenters aren’t even probably old enough to remember the 80’s & early 90’s when the Skins were relevant, and for the most part the teams which are good now were the Skins back then, check out the Steelers, Patriots, KC, LA/St. Louis Rams, GB, well you get my point they all were bottom feeders or irrelevant because during that time the 49ers, Skins, Giants, Buffalo, Denver, Cleveland and for a short while Miami were your consistent playoff teams. That being said most don’t know anything about Jack Kent Cooke, he wasn’t the nicest or easiest to work for and if not for Bobby Beathard would’ve fired Joe Gibbs after an 0-5 start, well we see how that turned out. So let’s not act like every franchise other than the Skins has not had their dark days…
