Bill Belichick on Saquon Barkley: We haven’t played him and hope we don’t

Patriots coach Bill Belichick is a master of finding positives about the worst teams on the schedule, but there are times when he doesn’t have to work that hard to find things to praise.

One example is Giants running back Saquon Barkley. Belichick ran through a laundry list of things Barkley does well — good vision, good quickness, he can play in space, he’s elusive, he’s got power — while explaining why the Patriots would be OK with Barkley missing a third straight game with an ankle injury.

“He’s an outstanding player,” Belichick said on Monday. “You’re right, we haven’t faced him, and I hope we don’t, but we need to be ready for him. He’s a very competitive guy, I’m sure he’s doing all he can to get ready to go. He was close last week, so we’ll probably get him.”

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur would only say that “there’s a possibility” that Barkley will play this week. The running back was listed as a limited participant in Monday’s practice, although that was only an estimation as the Giants didn’t actually practice.

We’ll see what happens when they do get back on the field. If Barkley doesn’t go, the Giants’ top back will likely be undrafted rookie Jon Hilliman as Wayne Gallman suffered a concussion in the loss to the Vikings.

  1. Zero chance Barkley plays unless his injury wasn’t as bad as they were telling people.

Shurmur on the other hand needs to go. This guy is awful.

  2. Barkley, Run-CMC, AK41 = best backs in the league.

If Run-CMC carries on at his current pace, he will shatter the all-time scrimmage yards record. He will deserve serious consideration for MVP.

  3. If he doesn’t play or if any of the other Giants players don’t, all we’ll hear is how injured they were….. with no acknowledgment of how banged up the Patriots are as well…point being, ALLteams have to deal with injuries to key players at some point thruout the season & sometimes thruout the ENTIRE season…..as BB says, “It Is What it Is”
That’s why it’s important to have QUALITY DEPTH…. to help you overcome those situations as best you can
    GO PATS!!!

  4. Doesn’t matter if Barkley’s healthy or not Giants are still gonna lose big. Kirk Cousins rolled out on pretty much passing play and the Giants still couldn’t stop it. Adam Thielen abused them from the slot over and over again and the Defensive Coordinator was still couldn’t adjust the coverage. Giants are 2-3 years away from being a competitive football team. Wasting Barkley’s career. The Barry Sanders era has started in NY…

Again, can you say “trying too hard”

    2010:

Bill Cowher: “You know, let me just say this: To answer your question, no, I don’t think so (it’s not an advantage for one team over another).
I just know as a head coach, you are always looking for a competitive edge. We had people out there trying to look at signals. We had guys go to games. They would tape the signal caller and also write it down. They would take it back and match up the signals with the game film and certain defenses with certain plays that were being called, particularly the defenses being called, to see if we could come up with some kind of an alert for a signal. So, what they did with videotaping the signal caller, people do it with the people in the stands!!
These people sitting there in the stands, looking at the signal, writing it down and matching up the 1st and 10 signal. Ok? Then you go back again and the 2nd and 10 and here’s the signal. You do that for a whole game.
You then go back and match up the defenses with the signal. And you can come up with what the signal was.
So, you don;’t need a video tape with what they were talking about doing. And people were doing it. WE were doing that. Everybody does that. You’re TRYING to gain a competitive edge. There is nothing wrong with that.
That’s why baseball players go through the mirage of signals. They’ve got all these different codes. That’s part of the competitive spirit of the game. I think it’s totally overblown. I think if you get caught (signals compromised), then do what we did and go to wristbands, you are worried about it. We started putting defenses on wristbands. Then you find a way to not get caught (signals compromised). When your good at something and people try steal from ya, I think it’s flattering.”

That literally makes no sense. Give an example of an “illegal video” of a running back during game time? I know you like the attention the Pats fans give you but this is just weak. Why are you so sensitive to the Pats that you have to post on every article that involves them? Has the team you rooted for been abused by the big meanies?

He’s a Colts fan. So yes , the Patriots own his team and he’s extremely jealous

  9. Kudos to BB for the kind words. With that said my Giants have almost zero shot on Thursday night. Our defense is non-competitive at this point…we have some young talent but thats about it; they’ll be much better next year but 2019 is a lost cause.

As far as Saquon, I assume he’ll be playing, especially with Gallman out with the concussion. Im not saying the Giants were going to beat Minny on Sunday but once Gallman went down the Giants became a pass only offense and the Vikings went to work. You cant play without a viable running back.

Tom Brady thinks he can and lost 2 SBs over it. Through the last 3 weeks in the first half, they haven’t committed to a run game even though NE has a loaded RB backfield.

Or, they sub the backs on and off based on the kind of play they want to run. Once this stupidity ended at halftime in Washington, Brady looked great as did the O Line.

  11. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Barkley, Luke Falk, Josh Allen, Colt McCoy, now Daniel Jones.

The Patriots have had the equivalent of a PAC 12 schedule so far.

    ——————
Who’s fault is that? Its supposed to be a parity league. Draft better players, get better coaches, scheme better – but shut up about “easy” schedules. Cassell plays a whole season in NE and goes 11-5 and we hear “oh, its the system, not the QB” – okay, start copying it and quit whining about lousy teams.

  12. Patriots first six opponents W/L record: 7-21

Two of the seven wins coming from the Giants who will be without Barkley, Shepard and Engram on Thursday.

Has anyone ever received such a gift schedule?

Such a “gift schedule” has been set for years in advance minus the Pats playing the winner’s schedule. Have the opponents been good, not really except Buffalo. However later in the year they are playing the toughest teams. So what will you be saying then? Also the Pats have plenty of injuries too. Quit crying.

Again, do you not know how the scheduling is done in the NFL

I can tell you who they are playing the next 5 upcoming years except for the 2 division winners

it’s a whiny excuse, which is what Millennials do with their 5th place trophies. Many of the coaches, GMs, some owners, etc, have Millennials as children, so they raised them to whine and blame others, as they lazily attempt to work through ways to be better.

Yes, the ’72 Dolphins come to mind. The 1970s Steelers and 49ers also played in weaker divisions during their dynastic runs.

The simple fact is, for the last 10 years, numerous ARROGANT franchises have been trying to build teams the opposite way BB does it. Why? Arrogance and jealousy.

So, what you’re seeing is NE doing their thing and minding their own business, not wasting energey at 345 Park Ave trying to cheat like other teams do via the Compeitition Committtee or drumming up framejobs to steal NE’s picks.

The jig is up. Goodell, whiny, jealous fans like you, the cheating owners and GMs, LOST.

    Big time.

You did it to yourselves due to greed and a thinking a quick 1-2 year overnight teambuild actually works. It doesn’t.

BB traded into drafts he liked, out of ones he didn’t, to keep costs down with the Rookie Cap since 2011, to build this. It’s not JUST Brady. That’s a myth.

If Brady went down tomorrow, Stidham would come in and NE would still win the division.

  17. Has anyone received such a gift schedule?
You mean besides the 1972 Dolphins?

In 2011, the Green Bay Packers had the kind of season the Patriots are having this year. Every week they faced a team in the middle of a 4 game losing streak and who were starting a new QB that week or a rookie QB.  I compiled and presented the stats and everyone laughed at me. If they didn’t lose to KC unexpectedly in Week 13 or 14 (KC was debuting Romeo Crennel as a nee coach that week and I think Kyle orton took over that week as Qb), they would have finished 16-0.

Then they ended up losing 38-20 to the Giants in the divisional round.

If the Patriots are somehow overrated as a result of the competition, they will be exposed.  I happen to think they’re not.  They are the World Champs.  And on paper, their defense improved since holding the Rams to 3 points in the SB and the Chiefs scoreless in the first half.

  18. It’s an extra bye week if Barkley doesn’t play! Maybe the Giants should play Eli to save Jones for another day.

  19. Confusing isn’t it? When trying to pretend what someone said… He meant to say “he don’t have any illegal video on him” or should it be “I don’t have any illegal video on him”. Read it slowly and out loud and let us know your answer. I know it’s alot to comprehend and your 4th grade teacher hasn’t gotten to that part yet but she will be impressed when you raise your your hand with the the correct answer.
