Jerry Jones: Don’t bet on Cowboys firing Jason Garrett

The Cowboys would love to have reason to re-sign Jason Garrett as their head coach after the season. But they chose not to extend Garrett’s contract in the offseason, putting pressure on him to “take the next step” to remain as the team’s coach after this season.

The Cowboys are 3-2, beating three teams with a combined 2-12 record and losing to two teams with a combined 8-2 record.

The back-to-back losses to the Saints and the Packers have brought Garrett’s job security again into question.

Garrett’s odds to be the next head coach fired are 4-1, behind only Dan Quinn (3-1) and in front of Doug Marrone (6-1) and Adam Gase (10-1), per SportsLine.com.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones gave Garrett a vote of confidence Monday, and Jerry Jones said on his radio show Tuesday he would like to dispel any question about Garrett’s future.

“Well, yes. Dispel it, yes,” Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “Don’t bet any money against that happening. You’ll lose it.”

Jones has fired only one coach midseason and that was Wade Phillips in 2010 after the Cowboys quit on Phillips in a 45-7 loss to the Packers to fall to 1-7. Garrett’s players always have played hard for him regardless the circumstances.

The Cowboys trailed 31-3 in the second half Sunday only to rally to within 34-24 before Brett Maher missed a field goal in the final two minutes.

Of course, if the Cowboys don’t do more in the postseason, they won’t have to fire Garrett. They just won’t renew his contract after this season.

Since taking over at midseason in 2010, Garrett is 80-61 with three playoff trips, two playoff wins and no appearances in the NFC Championship Game.

  1. Jerry has never had a better HC than Jason. Even Jerry must know that. Who else will take his abuse and still be as competent a coach? Jerry has to decide what he wants more, a sycophant or a coach. So far lately he’s wanted the sycophant. I think Jason is safe.

  2. Jerry’s not firing Garrett. He’s finally got the figurehead coaching puppet he always wanted, so he’s just hoping Garrett wins enough that he can justify keeping him.

  3. How do these GMs and coaches stay employed for so long? It’s fascinating to be such failures or so mediocre in failing for a long period of time, that the owner likes it.

    So strange.

  4. And don’t bet on the Cowboys making the Playoffs. If they do it will be one and done
    as usual.

  5. Coach clappy is the ultimate yes-person to Jerry, why would they fire him. Though if they lose to the Jets then the Eagles look for Richards or Kitna to takeover during the bye week. Jerry’s mind does change a lot.

  6. If postseason success is a requirement for the clapper to stay, he’s gone. When your “franchise” QB can’t put up more points than Teddy Bridgewater, your team is a shambles.

  7. When Jerry is sick of mediocrity he will finally hire a GM, until then look for a draft blunder, FA Flop or a foolish contract every year.

As far as Dak goes I don’t know if he is that top tier Franchise QB, he may become one as he is still kind of young but he needs to show it SOON, otherwords he may be that Andy Dalton except with mroe talent around him, or a Matt Stafford kind of QB thats just the tier below it.

Sure teams several teams will line up to sign him if he becomes a FA, but that doesn’t mean he is going to put the new team over the hump (Kirk Cousins)

  8. It’s hilarious to me he is known as “The Clapper”, too. I always felt he did it excessively clapping like a Pop Warner coach would do.

Just embarrassing to think Jerrah is sitting on some great coach.

Until he can get Sean Payton. Sorry Jerrah, not till Drew retires and runs for congress.

Payton is under contract until 2025. Jerry is going to be waiting a while.

Yes, way better than Jimmy Johnson or Bill Parcells..

  11. Easy to say now, right Jerry. Future Hall of Famer Sean Payton isn’t even and option any longer so of course you’re going to say Garret is your guy. Laughable…as most things that come out your mouth.

  12. Of course not. Why would they do that? They love losing football games in this 21st century.

  13. Yes, way better than Jimmy Johnson or Bill Parcells..

I find it a crime that Jimmy Johnson is not in the Pro Football HOF but Jerry Jones is.

They do say that wealth has it’s privileges.

  14. Parcells has a 34–30 record and no playoff wins w dallas as coach
Not much better than the red spitter, meh

  15. How many years has the media tried and failed to get Garrett fired? Almost every year he’s been HC! Give it a break, its obviously not working.

What do they call someone who does the same things over and over yet gets the same results?
