Rob Gronkowski joining FOX Sports

Rob Gronkowski is going to be back on television during NFL games, but it’s not because he’s making a comeback as an active player.

FOX Sports announced on Tuesday that they have struck a deal with the former Patriots tight end to serve as an analyst across its NFL programming. His first appearance is set for Thursday night’s pregame show when Gronkowski will presumably share some thoughts about his former team ahead of their matchup with the Giants.

“I’m extremely excited to be joining FOX Sports,” Gronkowski said in a statement. “For the past 25 years, they’ve offered viewers top-notch NFL programming from the field to the booth to the studio. Their deep talent roster is unmatched, which was important for me as I embark on this new chapter in my life because I’ll be able to learn from the best in the business.”

It’s not clear what Gronkowski’s overall role will be with FOX, but it likely won’t preclude him from returning to the field should he change his mind about playing again. Jay Cutler was set to call games for FOX a couple of years ago before joining the Dolphins in the wake of an injury to Ryan Tannehill.

  1. Fox is almost as unwatchable as BSPN now. Enough of the EX NFL players who can barely speak. Hire professional journalists. Ever see the FOX pregame show, gibberish with ex jocks 30 yrs past their prime babbling over each other. It’s the view for men.

  2. He’s a natural for the joshing around bits all those NFL shows do with the former players. But that schtick gets real old, real fast.

  3. Despite his personality, I think he will be as dull as a robot as an “analyst” for Fox Sports. Maybe he can be the new mascot to replace their Cleatus robot. Then he can just flex his muscles and spike footballs.

  4. Not a television voice I want to hear. Your voice is very important in broadcasting and this is not going to be good. Thank god I only have time to watch games and don’t watch pre-game shows.

  5. Why? Well I don’t care don’t watch any of the pre/post/halftime crap anyway…just give me the game all the rest of that nonsense is just reality tv which is garbage anyhow.

  6. Not at all surprising, really; but here’s hoping that if he does become a game commentator that he’s at least less robotic and awkward than Witten was last year.

  7. Let’s cut to sloth with his take on that play. DUHHH, why not put him on MNF with BOOGER. Ex athletes are the worst

  8. Fox also just started airing WWE Smackdown as part of their 4 year 2 billion dollar deal so I could c Fox using him in a lil crossover promotion maybe a match for Gronk

  9. Good luck, 87. They might throw you outta the club if you bring that CBP oil to the sidelines, though …

  10. Being part of a winning organization sells. All these Ex-Patriots in broadcasting have been taught by the greatest mastermind in NFL history. Fans desire there perspective.

  11. Having listened to him for a few years now, he has more football smarts than he often gets credit for, but he’s much better suited to a sideline reporter (a la Tony Siragusa) role rather than an analyst or color commentator role.

  12. Love the guy but not sure this will work out. Watched him when he co-hosted Crashletes a while back. Talking wasn’t his best skill.

No no no, the Patriots homers told me he was going to come out of retirement and play for the Patriots in time for the playoffs! How could this be?

The same way Witten did you retard. he can leave the booth and go to the field.

He should be on Fox News he’s about as qualified as the rest of them…
    ————————————————————–

That is oddly insulting to Gronk, who is clearly far more intelligent and insightful than any of the prime time personalities on Fox News, as well as far more intelligent than anyone in the Fox News Trump Administration.

  15. “Ever see the FOX pregame show, gibberish with ex jocks 30 yrs past their prime babbling over each other. It’s the view for men.”

I watch the homer press on NBC Sports Boston because all the national pregame shows are pathetic. They all spend at least half the time yukking up over mostly very unfunny “jokes” and have very little real analysis.

I think Tony Romo is pretty good.

  17. If you are the Network, what do you have to lose. Play to his strengths and it may work out.

Not surprising to see haters comments. Many, not all, of the negative posts are from Patriots haters. Move on haters! Roll to the next channel!

  18. The Party animal persona won’t play on national TV. We’ll see if he can vocalize his football knowledge meaningfully.

FYI – Gronk is not returning this year.

  19. All of the former players should be made to do a few years of local sports talk radio to learn how to be broadcasters.

  20. Enough of the EX NFL players who can barely speak. Hire professional journalists.

agreed there’s way too many unintelligeble, barely literate explayers on every network. but “professional journalists”? cmon they are mostly babbling hairdos who jump from one baseless over reaction to another chasing clicks by trying to invent the latest “storyline”.

tony romo is pretty darn good. hire players who can enunciate, inform. and entertain. they exist, not saying gronk fills the bill but we’ll see.

  21. At least he can speak English, which is a huge improvement over the other inchorent ex-players who can barely string three words together. It’s either the loud obnoxious yelling schtick like Michael Irvin or the Michael Vick type who also destroy the language but at least do it quietly. Its amazing that Steve Young gerts shunted aside when he is the most thoughtful articulate person on ESPN. It shows their priorities when it comes to covering the game.

  22. Seriously? Have they watched how bad he is in front of camera? If not watch his Tide commercials. He sounds like a neanderthal. I have flashbacks of Encino Man everytime it comes on.

  23. But, but, but how can this be? Pats fanboy army swore their superhero was coming back.

When you resort to name calling you have lost all credibility. Witten was an iron man and barely got hurt. Gronk is made of glass and is one injury away from having permanent damage.

The Drooling Caveman analyst. And when he washes out at Fox…maybe Geico will hire him

    ———————————
Hate to break it to you, but Gronk is actually highly intelligent in general, and when it comeS to football he has an exceptionally deep understanding of the game. You should know that from watching how he could operate on the field. Sure he was unusually strong and fast too, but his success was from his ability to read and respond. Also he has done appearances where is breaking down plays on a monitor and was quite good with both his eye for details and nuances and how well he could explain it. So there is a good chance he does well in this role.

Or maybe this will be like Whitten and he winds up Back in a Pats uniform by the end of the year. You can hope for that too. Because you certainly wont have to worry about him against the Vikings at any point this year.

He will spill his guts on how many times he cheated!
    ——————-

Or just give a really good analysis and breakdown of hoe the Vikings fell so far behind again.

  27. Now we can see EXACTLY how much of a meathead he really is. From the videos on social media, I’d say USDA Grade A Prime!

  28. I hope the first show he is on Jim Rome interviews him and he beats the snot out of him. That would be entertainment!

  29. For those here complaining about Gronk, can he be any worse than Booger McFarland, Jason Witten, Phil Simms, and Troy Aikman? The pre-game shows are supposed to be entertaining. They are supposed to get you more hyped for the game. This outta be good.

  30. It’s impossible not to like Gronk. He’s goofy and fun-loving. Some may say he’s buffoon-ish…but at least he’s a FUN buffoon-ish, whereas a guy like Michael Irvin is just a flat-out obnoxious blowhard. As soon as a hear Irvin’s voice I’m quickly jabbing at the channel change button. Gronk will be entertaining.

  31. Flintstones, meet the Flintstones, they’re the modern stone-age family,
Rock Gronk, from the town of Bedrock,
He’s a page right out of history

Unfortunately, “professional journalists” no longer exist.

  33. @vikesfansteve

Professional journalists? You want another talking head that knows less about football than the average fan and whose only gimmick is peddling gossip and sticking a microphone in a player’s face asking if so and so rumor is a distraction?

  34. For as much as I’d like to dump on Gronk for being a meathead, he has surely done some brilliant things both on and off of the field. Not using a cent of his NFL money while in the league has made me open to the possibility that this juggernaut of a human that is the personification of a Keg-Stand might actually be really really smart and i should stop doubting him until he does something in his life that he’s not good at.

  35. @Richard Nguyen A journalist is not a “talking head”. The term “Talking heads” is intended to used for the newscasters(sports or otherwise) who simply reads from teleprompter. A journalist is someone who has detailed information regarding a subject and shares objectively with others.

  36. I’d rather have a former player in the pre-game show than some “professional journalist” who has been trained to view everything from a liberal PC lens.
Plus the vast majority of “journalists” today favor NY or California teams, I cannot stand that.
Give me Gronk any day over these pampered celebrity-hungry “journalists” who are simply OP-ed hacks in disguise.

  37. Former offensive linemen make the best analysts in the business.
Why are offensive linemen blackball from TV, when they are the smartest and most articulate players. Such as: John Madden, Pat Summerall, and Dan Dierdorf.

  38. Although I put the odds of Gronk coming back at less then 50-50, I think this development makes it more likely that he does. It will cause him to be around the game that he loved playing, and of course, we saw what happened to Cutler and Whitten in the same situation.

  39. Thankfully Witten set the bar so low last year that anything Gronk does will be viewed as a BIG improvement! Funny how Witten was so bad and Romo is so good…. Quite a range of talent on those Cowboys. They did win again Sunday, right? What’s that? They didn’t? Aww… so sorry Jerrud! Another year of all talk no action? LMAO….

Gronk is also the greatest TE who ever lived and has 3 rings.

  42. With his nasally coke nose voice that sounds like he’s got a lugie hanging in there he doesn’t spit out. His voice is vomit inducing.
