Steelers get chippy with a Wednesday practice full of skirmishes

The Steelers aren’t happy. For now, they’re taking out their frustrations on each other.

Via Mark Kaboly of TheAthletic.com, Wednesday’s practice featured multiple skirmishes among teammates.

The defense, per Kaboly, took liberties during a padded practice that wasn’t supposed to be a full-contact session.

“It’s the way I like to practice, and I hold people up to that account,” defensive captain Cam Heyward said, via Kaboly. “We try not to let it get out of hand and leave it on the field.”

Offensive players were far less loquacious.

“I really don’t want to talk about it, to be honest,” guard David DeCastro said. “I know you want to know what’s going on, but I don’t want to talk about it.”

DeCastro reportedly was involved in the first of multiple altercations that unfolded during practice. Heyward remained unapologetic.

“We are chippy,” Heyward said. “We are 1-4. All we want are Ws. It’s like with everything you do. If you aren’t getting results that you want, you are going to get ticked off. We are trying to win a game, and that’s all I care about right now. You have to emulate the game.”

Veteran guard Ramon Foster was chippy about the chippiness.

“When I talk about it, it takes me to a dark spot,” Foster said, per Kaboly. “I would rather not, but you should know better. There is such a thing as a training camp where you can hash out all of that and there is such a thing of being a pro, and I am a believer of being a pro. Give all you want to in camp, I don’t care, it’s camp. When the season starts, you become a pro to each other, to the team, to the community.”

It looks like there’s a difference of opinion among Steelers players as to what it takes to be a pro. For guys like Heyward, it takes aggression and fight. While that may not translate to a win on Sunday against the Chargers, it at least gave frustrated players a chance to work out some of their anger over losing four of five games.

  1. We are privileged to witness the Steelers’ return to the depths of the AFC from which they sprang and so long inhabited in generations gone by.

  2. Well I can tell you that, from what I know about the Leveon Bell Situation and the way Ramon Foster stabbed him in the back,

I’ll listen to Cam Heyward’s ideas on anything before I listen to a word out of Foster’s mouth about being a pro.

  3. I am actually shocked that I had to read about this skirmish and didn’t see it on JuJu’s social media. Then again, he probably fumbled the phone when tried to post it.

  4. I’d be chippy too if I had held the Ravens to a 3 and out on the first possession of OT, then watched the offense fumble away an opportunity to win the game. And that’s not the first time that has happened this year.

  5. It sounds like the Steelers offensive players are wimps who have no fight in them. They don’t seem to hate losing like the defensive players do.

  6. Were there coaches running these practices?? Did they have nothing to say??? It sounds like Lord of the Flies.

  7. Today’s players are divas. 10 – 15 years ago this is a normal practice and you played good because you practiced they way you played. Now players complain because they got hit in practice, on a Wednesday. Between the flags being thrown every other play and the lack of good play on the field, this game is slowly going down hill.

  8. Tomlin is simply a poor leader who has somehow stayed back in the shadows behind mediocre Colbert and HoF QB Ben.

Talk about masking how mediocre Tomlin has been overall.

  9. This is what happens when you don’t have a QB. A generation or two of Steelers fans have never experienced this, nevering seeing Mark Malone or Bubby Brister. Roethlisberger may come back next year and play well and the problem goes away…for a while, but with the next concussion or other injury,no matter how slight,he’ll probably call it quits.

As for Mason Rudolph,he looks closer to Bubby than Ben.

  10. I don’t know why we’re assuming Tomlin couldn’t control it. Hell, their sitting on a 1-4 record after taking the last 3 losses by a combined 9 points. I’m sure he’s pissed and and I don’t see why he wouldn’t want his players to feel that way, too.

  11. If nobody ended up in concussion protocol it isn’t a story? More likely a bunch of slap fights with these guys!

  12. Left out of the story is how the defense is absolutely played out of its mind in the last few games and how the offense is done absolutely Jack with the opportunities the defense has been providing. Sounds like a message has been sent.

  13. You ever see a high rise building implode? First, you see the charges fire at the strategic points of the building, a lot of noise and little clouds of dust and smoke. Then, you start to see the structure move and slowly deform. Finally, you see the whole building come down rapidly.

These skirmishes yesterday? They are the charges to the building. The loss to the Chargers this Sunday night will be the structure moving. I am looking forward to watching the whole building coming down rapidly….

  14. This is phase three of the implosion. First, the Steelers start losing games to QBs like Tebow. Then, their best players realize what a sham organization this is and do everything they can to get out, even if means risking their careers. Now, the remaining players turn against each other. Seem this many times.

  15. They might lose, but you would be foolish to bet against the Steelers come Sunday. This team is sometimes not strong but never lays down.

  16. Steelers were right there with SF, at their place, with a backup QB, and lost to Baltimore in OT with the 3rd stringer. I still like their chances to win the AFC North.

  17. If they only put up that much of a fight in games maybe they wouldn’t be 1-4. Of course they still have the coach so maybe they should be happy they aren’t 0-5.

  18. It’s going to be a long year for the Steelers with losing the killer b’s. Keeping an edge and getting chippy shows that they still care and not quitting, you have to respect that. Maybe the trenches can grind out a few wins this year so the season isn’t a total failure. I think this is a positive and don’t understand all the negativity here. At least they haven’t quit.

  19. Looking back you can always point to the Fitzpatrick trade as a pivotal acquisition. That sure to be a top 5 pick that the Steelers gave up for him is starting to look like it might have come in handy now.

Well, maybe Steelers fans, the coach, the GM, the owner, the media and whoever else should drop the god-like worship complex you all have when anyone good plays in black and gold?

You people overrate every player on the team every year because of your 1970s success and little bubble you live in in the hills of PA.

We all laugh about it, yet you people keep doing it.

Your team is not as great as you think and it’s been that way for about a decade now.

Most of the NFL stinks, so you’ve feasted on that with a HOF QB, and masked other areas of your mediocre team.

    Congrats.

  21. This wouldn’t be happening if Ben were there to lead the team.
    His absence is deeply felt.

Come back soon, Ben. You’re the greatest.

  22. Because fights NEVER happen at any other team’s contact practices and when they happen to the Steelers, its DEFINITELY Mike Tomlin’s fault.

Goodness how I love these message boards and the laughter they bring.

  23. “Goodness how I love these message boards and the laughter they bring.”

Likewise. There are some desperate people out there.

Just three words….Jets Bills Fins….need I say more
