PFT’s Week Six picks

It’s quickly getting ugly.

Thanks to a clean sweep on three disagreements last week, MDS has a five-game lead through five weeks. He finished Week Five at 11-4; I went 8-7.

For the year, he’s now at 47-31. I’m at versus 42-36.

We have three disagreements this week. I’d better return the favor, or I’ll have a hard time closing the gap.

Giants at Patriots

MDS’s take: This could get ugly for Daniel Jones, going against what may prove to be the best defense Bill Belichick has had in New England. The Patriots will cruise, and even cover the 17-point spread that is the biggest in Giants franchise history.

MDS’s pick: Patriots 30, Giants 10.

Florio’s take: It looked semi-plausible on paper in April. It won’t be close to semi-plausible on the football field come Thursday night.

Florio’s pick: Patriots 34, Giants 13.

Panthers at Buccaneers

MDS’s take: Kyle Allen will keep it going in London, strengthening his case that he deserves to be the Panthers’ starting quarterback even after Cam Newton is ready to go.

MDS’s pick: Panthers 24, Buccaneers 17.

Florio’s take: London gets an NFC South showdown that may be an NFC South championship elimination game, especially with the Saints at 4-1. If the Panthers ride Christian McCaffrey this time around, the Panthers should be able to even the season series at 1-1.

Florio’s pick: Panthers 24, Buccaneers 21.

Bengals at Ravens

MDS’s take: The Ravens have about as bad a defense as we’ve ever seen in franchise history, but the Bengals don’t have an offense that can take advantage of that.

MDS’s pick: Ravens 32, Bengals 17.

Florio’s take: The Bengals surely won’t go 0-16. But 0-6 is staring them in the face.

Florio’s pick: Ravens 27, Bengals 13.

Seahawks at Browns

MDS’s take: This is an intriguing game because the Browns can’t possibly be as bad as they looked on Monday night, but if they lose again, at home, a whole lot of people are going to be calling them pretenders. I think they’ll be better than they were against the 49ers, but still not good enough to beat the Seahawks.

MDS’s pick: Seahawks 21, Browns 14.

Florio’s take: Adversity has arrived for the Browns. It’s going to stick around for awhile.

Florio’s pick: Seahawks 24, Browns 20.

Saints at Jaguars

MDS’s take: No one thought this would be Teddy Bridgewater vs. Gardner Minshew before the season, but that’s where we are. I like Bridgewater to keep his good play going and help the Saints win again.

MDS’s pick: Saints 24, Jaguars 20.

Florio’s take: Who’s the best team in the NFC? It very well may be the Saints, who keep on winning without Drew Brees.

Florio’s pick: Saints 27, Jaguars 17.

Texans at Chiefs

MDS’s take: Deshaun Watson vs. Patrick Mahomes. Now that’s a quarterback matchup. The Chiefs’ offense has been struggling against man coverage, but I think they’ll make some adjustments this week and look more like the Chiefs again.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 30, Texans 24.

Florio’s take: The search continues for the next Brady-Manning rivalry. And this could be it. Deshaun Watson was stellar in Week Five, and Patrick Mahomes did well in a loss that left him hobbled. It’s hard to envision K.C. losing two straight home games.

Florio’s pick: Chiefs 27, Texans 20.

Washington at Dolphins

MDS’s take: It’s the Tank Bowl, and I think the difference is that Miami is actually trying to tank, while Washington only looks like it is. Bill Callahan starts his tenure as interim head coach with a win.

MDS’s pick: Washington 14, Dolphins 10.

Florio’s take: Twice before, they’ve played for a championship. This time around, they’re squaring off for the first pick in the draft. Washington gets the interim-coach bump, which keeps Miami on track for the first pick in the draft.

Florio’s pick: Washington 23, Dolphins 17.

Eagles at Vikings

MDS’s take: This feels like a game that we might look back on in December and say it changed the NFC playoff race. I don’t trust Kirk Cousins to have two good games in a row.

MDS’s pick: Eagles 20, Vikings 10.

Florio’s take: The up-and-down Vikings should be up again this week, since they’re playing at home. And since the game isn’t in prime time.

Florio’s pick: Vikings 27, Eagles 21.

Falcons at Cardinals

MDS’s take: The Cardinals’ offense is making strides, and the Falcons’ defense is terrible. I like Kyler Murray to have his second consecutive big game.

MDS’s pick: Cardinals 30, Falcons 27.

Florio’s take: The clock is ticking closer to midnight for Dan Quinn, thanks to a defense that can’t stop anyone.

Florio’s pick: Cardinals 30, Falcons 27.

49ers at Rams

MDS’s take: Is it a changing of the guard in the NFC West? I believe it is, as the 49ers get a road win that gives them a huge lead over the Rams.

MDS’s pick: 49ers 31, Rams 21.

Florio’s take: A short week for the 49ers plus extra time for the Rams plus too many injuries to the 49ers equals the Rams avoiding a disastrous 3-3 start to the season.

Florio’s pick: Rams 35, 49ers 27.

Titans at Broncos

MDS’s take: The Broncos are playing better football than their record suggests, and I expect them to get their second consecutive win after an ugly start.

MDS’s pick: Broncos 21, Titans 14.

Florio’s take: The Titan Truism continues — they lose when they’re favored and they win when they’re the underdogs. Somehow, the Broncos are favored. Somehow, the Titans will win.

Florio’s pick: Titans 17, Broncos 13.

Cowboys at Jets

MDS’s take: Sam Darnold is back, which gives the Jets a fighting chance, but Dak Prescott is going to give the Jets’ defense fits.

MDS’s pick: Cowboys 30, Jets 17.

Florio’s take:  Dallas will take out a couple of weeks of frustration on an overmatched Jets team. If the Cowboys somehow stumble here, Jason Garrett should start booking moving vans for January.

Florio’s pick: Cowboys 34, Jets 20.

Steelers at Chargers

MDS’s take: This is probably the Steelers’ last chance to be relevant this season, and they’re going into the game with their third-string quarterback. Not a winning formula.

MDS’s pick: Chargers 20, Steelers 10.

Florio’s take: Wednesday’s Pittsburgh practice skirmishes feel like a good thing on the surface. On closer inspection, the defense vs. offense vibe suggests that dysfunction is spreading.

Florio’s pick: Chargers 24, Steelers 14.

Lions at Packers

MDS’s take: The NFC North is incredibly competitive, but if the Packers win this one they’re in first place and have a head-to-head win against all three divisional opponents. I think they’ll get it.

MDS’s pick: Packers 24, Lions 21.

Florio’s take: The Lions are better than expected, but the Packers are finding their groove under Matt LaFleur.

Florio’s pick: Packers 27, Lions 23.

    Not even close

  2. I hate it when these two clowns both pick the Packers.

Not that they matter, but I don’t like them any where near our wagon.😉

  3. Pittsburgh will win this one. LA Chargers are a mess with IR’s. Pouncey went down this week with neck injury. Also, LA Chargers have very weak defense.

  4. Florio’s take: The Lions are better than expected, but the Packers are finding their groove under Matt LaFleur.

8-7? You could do that by simply flipping a coin regardless of which teams play each other.

  6. Being a pats fan, I have to say Brady doesnt look Bradyesk this year. Passing is not accurate and he is getting hit a lot holding the ball more than usual. With that said I would not be shocked to see him say adios at the end of this season no matter what happens.
Still a good team but they havent played the best teams either to compare with.

  7. I thought Jackson vs Mahomes was the next Brady Manning…..or was it….Mayfield Jackson…or was it..Prescott Wentz…or is it Goff Garoppolo?? Oh well, if you keep declaring any matchup the next Brady Manning, eventually one might stick?

  8. I was all set to put money on Devlin “Duck Dynasty” Hodges and the Steelers as 7 point road dogs but then I remembered Tomlin was the coach. Tomlin would look good in Burgundy and Gold!

    GO STEELERS!

  9. Sleep on the Lions again. You realize don’t hasn’t lost to GB in 2 years, right? That will continue as the Lions run wild 34-24.

  10. Sleep on the Lions again. You realize Detroit hasn’t lost to GB in 2 years, right? That will continue as the Lions run wild 34-24.

  11. Miami will be smiling and possibly looking at #1 and #2 overall pick

I know you type that as some sort of “slam” against the Packers, but honestly – sometimes people don’t care how the sausage is made, as long as it tastes good.

Since you “live” in Chicago and you “see” Bears fans you know that Trubisky sucks……sure there pal, judge a young kid in Chicago when you parade around a QB that hasn’t done anything for your team in 11 years.

The Lions are the Browns of the NFC, no one cares if you beat the Packers and Bears for a couple years, it’s meaningless like your comments. Everyone Chicago that knows you probably laughs behind your back because the whole world knows it stings that Trubisky and Daniel shredded your defense last year in the combined two game sweep!

  18. It’s been 1,012 days since the Packers beat the Lions. Detroit has owned them the past 2 years and that trend is going to continue. Detroit is coming off a bye week, and will be looking to make a statement after losing a game to the Chiefs that they should have won.

Actually, I have posted several times that anytime a team is 4-1 they are good. The packers are good. My “slam” is really against people who claim that the packers offense and defense are good to great. There yardage and point stats say otherwise.

Again, the truth as to why the packers are 4-1 has to do with leading the league in turnovers and the +/- ratio on turnovers. That’s pretty good defense in that area.
    Nothing more. Nothing less.

Triggered Much? Don’t be mad I was right about the overrated Bears and Trubisky.

  21. I have a feeling the Jags will beat the Saints. Saints are not as good a team outside on grass. They are a dome team that likes a fast track.

  22. Panthers over the Bucs – Panther have looked as good as thet have been all year and the Bucs as disorganized as they usually are..

Saints over the Jags – the Saints winning streak has been impressive and it’s hard to go against them as well as they have played..

Falcons over Cardinals – The Falcons don’t give us much confidence after beating the eagles, they have lost their groove.. the Cardinals are still rebuilding.. if the Falcon lose this one, they may struggle to win any game..

  23. Is anyone else tired of these London games? All it does is steal a home game away from teams each season, and we all know the vast majority of people living in the United Kingdom do not care about our football. Not to mention, the games are usually aired early like 9:30 am in the morning eastern time. That would be 6:30 am on the west coast. How many would watch?

  24. Just want to point out, Washington fired their head coach, they are swapping qbs again, and they are winless…yet both guys picked them to win on the road. How bad is Miami, geez

    What’s your point?
    ——
My point is that the packers offense and defense isn’t as good as people claim.

GB Strength of Schedule: .520 (Bears, Vikings, Broncos, Eagles, Cowboys)
MN Strength of Scheulde: .520 (Falcons, Packers, Raiders, Bears, Giants)

It’s always funny how packer fans slam the Vikings “easy” schedule when the packers have had the same. LOL….
The packers are better than the vikings at this point in the season. No question.

Totally agree. Didn’t they just recently add the option to flex games starting week 5 instead of like week 11 or 12? They need to take advantage of that.

  28. Supposed to be heavy rain tonight in Foxboro, I see it more like 21 – 3 or 17-0 Pats with the crappy weather.

  29. Detroit will go down in flames on Monday night and their season begins to spiral out of control, very typical for the Lions.

    Vikings beat the Eagles.

Giants upset the Patriots and serve them there first loss!!

  30. Not sure why Packer fans are riled up that somebody pointed out they are 4-1 because of turnovers and that their offense and defense is mainly mediocre. It’s simply the truth. The turnovers won’t keep up. The Packers aren’t going 8-2 and then 13-3. They should be a 11 win team with their strong start (and nice home schedule to start season). It is what it is. They are not a SB team. Rodgers is about to enter his mid season swoon (if he doesn’t get injured first).

  31. Quite a bit of shade being thrown at the Lions. How can non-fans hate them more than those of us who live here?? Hilarious.

I don’t know if they’ll win or not, but I’m interested in seeing what our OC and DC comes up with after a bye week.

    Go TEAM!

Totally triggered and delusional. I’ll add you to that list. On what earth is Trubisky a good quarterback or Nagy the offensive genius he thinks he is? Face it, in 2018 the Bears peaked. The Bears are going backwards.

  33. “And the Vikings are 3 and 2 because they’ve played three bad teams and two good ones.

Not saying the Raiders are really good, for one the injury to high pick Johnathan Abram while trying to rebuild their D hurts. But they beat Chicago and Chicago beat the Vikings.

    _____________________

This is a fallacy. Saints are 28-26 on grass in Payton/Brees era. This doesnt sound great unless you realize that this would rank as 6th highest win percentage on road in that span. Now, Im not convinced they win this game, they are not a perfect team without Brees (or with him) but this reasoning is flawed.

  35. Washington and Miami should end up in a tie.

That would be the only fitting conclusion for that game.

  36. Patriots 31 Giants 16 some running from Michel, more passing to Izzo and some turnovers from the Giants get the Pats the win. Redskins 20 Dolphins 13 Fins look like the worst of the winless teams especially on defense. Packers 27 Lions 21 look for the Pack to keep it on the ground with Aaron Jones.

  37. I wouldn’t be shocked if KC, NO, GB & SEA all lose this week …. wouldn’t be surprised if they all won either though, so what do I know

  38. I’d hope the pats would blow the giants out of the water. The giants have no healthy players on offense and they are playing a rookie qb. Sadly, the giants are the second best team (the Bills being the best team) the pats have faced this year.

That’s not saying much about “the best defense BB has ever assembled”. The pats have only played one team (the bills) with a winning record.

Also I don’t see anyone saying that Trubisky is a good QB, only your unhealthy obsession with pointing out that the Bears should have drafted Mahomes.

  42. I know the Lions have a far worse overall history but. The Lions have the best division record over the last six years. I’m 32 years old. The last time the Packers beat the Lions I was in my 20’s. They play at least twice every year. End of story

No he means when the Lions squeaked into the playoffs a few years ago and Stafford fumbled in the 4th qtr with time expiring and blew the game. The packers are 4-1 because of turnovers

And Stafford is a turnover machine. Kirk Cousins 2.0

Define turnover machine? You mean one more interception than Rogers with 1?

    _____________________________________________________

No he means when the Lions squeaked into the playoffs a few years ago and Stafford fumbled in the 4th qtr with time expiring and blew the game. There are plenty of other occurrences like this during critical games we can cover if you would like….but your typical response and excuse is blaming the refs.

  55. Anybody that watches the Washington/Miami game should receive a check in the mail from both team owners for pain and suffering.

  56. I thunk the Lions have a good team and all but I have to ask where in the sam of hell all of these Lions fans came from all of a sudden.

  57. So Watson’s 5 TD’s last week was an anomaly?

If Dallas doesn’t beat the wheels off the Jets, Jerry should sell the team and retire.

  58. I’ve been here commenting for years. But it is surprising how many Lions fans are coming out of the woodwork lately. I have been a Lions fan long enough to know that they will have to earn it all on the field. Fortunately they’re off to a good start this year but Monday is an enormous game

  59. “Anybody that watches the Washington/Miami game should receive a check in the mail from both team owners for pain and suffering.”

No one is forcing them to do so if they do watch. Plenty of other things to do if you don’t want to watch a game.

  60. The negativity towards the Lions is even more ramped-up. I think lots of opposing NFCN fans are whistling through the graveyard.

    The last 3 times I wrote …

“[INSERT] are going to shock the world.”

    I was right.

Steelers are going to shock the world.

Pretty certain the world won’t be shocked at all. Why? Most of the people on this planet doesn’t give a rip about the NFL.

  62. Giants 10… Giants 13??? The Giants will not score a TD on this defense with the players they will be without tonight. They will be lucky to put up 3, and with the wind in the forecast might make that tough.

People seem to forget that the Pats defense really started to take shape at the end of last season. Beating the Chargers, shutting down KC for a half and shutting out the Rams. They’ve gotten better since.

    “Stafford is a turnover machine”
    ————————————————————–
Actually only 10 active QBs have a lower INT rate than Stafford. Among QBs who have a higher INT rates are Brees, Rivers, Luck and Roethlisberger.
He is 12th among active QBs when it comes to fumbles. Those QBs who have fumbled more include Brady (not counting the one that lost the SB), Brees, Rivers, Rodgers, Roethlisberger and Wilson.

  65. Lions have swept the Packers the last 2 years so the Packers are due for a win against them especially at home, and their offense has gotten better every week. Packers 35 Lions 24

  66. I know the Lions have a far worse overall history but. The Lions have the best division record over the last six years. I’m 32 years old. The last time the Packers beat the Lions I was in my 20’s. They play at least twice every year. End of story
    —-
What’s your point? I’m 65 years old. The last time the Lions won an NFL championship I was 3. End of story.

  67. NFC NORTH RECORDS (REGULAR SEASON) AGAINST THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS SINCE 2001

    W. L
    Pittsburgh……4…9. 31%
    Cleveland…….1…6. 14%
    Cincinnati……1…7. 13%
    Baltimore…….1…7. 13%
