Eagles cut Zach Brown

Kirk Cousins gets the last laugh.

Eagles linebacker Zach Brown, who badmouthed Cousins before facing the Vikings last week, is being released, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Brown and the rest of the Eagles’ defense did not play well on Sunday, with Cousins completing 22 of 29 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-20 Vikings win. If you’re going to talk trash about an upcoming opponent, you’d better back it up, and Brown didn’t back it up.

Presumably Brown was cut because his play on the field hasn’t been up to par, and not because he provided the opponents with bulletin-board material. But his big talk didn’t help.

The 29-year-old Brown, who signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Eagles this offseason, had started all six games this year and played 68 percent of their defensive snaps and 22 percent of their special teams snaps.

  1. Was a very decent player, was pretty darn good when he played for the Bills and was good for the Redskins, he sure has dropped off. Was awful for the Eagles. Looks like age crept up on him, tough to be a good LB in this league at that age. Some can do it, some can not.

  2. His problem has always been above the ears. Misses fits, blows coverages on a regular basis. Unreliable.

  3. Can Brown cover a TE? Arizona sure could use him and they have the waiver priority.

  4. Has to be about more than just his play. If they had better options on hand he wouldn’t have been playing 68% of the snaps. If he was fitting in they’d have kept him as a backup.

  5. So was he only the roster Week 1? If so, does that mean his contract is fully guaranteed for the season?

  6. I was at the game yesterday. Someone forgot to tell the Eagles how ridiculous you look when you are showboating and taunting the crowd while losing by three TDs. I concluded that Pederson has bigger problems with his team than his injured defensive backfield, and this story convinces he may share that opinion.

  7. Pederson is sending a message, similar to Gase when Jay Ajayi was traded. The rest of the defense just got put on notice.

  8. He’s got to be better than any of the Bengals LBs, so I hope Mike Brown/Duke Tobin gives him a call.

  9. Love the Viking fans smelling themselves after throwing TDs to our injury riddled secondary. 4 of our top 5 CBs didnt play. Hopefully we meet again…but I dont think I the Vikes will make the playoffs.

  10. Not the best coverage linebacker but I remember most of us were surprised he was still available that late in FA when the Eagles signed him. And because the Eagles have been good lately, the analysts and “experts” all thought it was a sneaky good pickup, but unfortunately it didn’t work out. The Eagles are relatively thin at Linebacker though so this is surprising. Maybe they’re going to use his roster spot to sign more DBs since they are so hurt there.

    Neither will the Beagles.

  12. I am surprised by this move it had to be based on more than just what he said and his last game.

Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. I hear a violin playing….

  14. 1phillyfan. what are you talking about? Youre saying your 2nd stringers suck I guess. Blame that on management.

  15. Eagles were peeved last year when Kamu Gruiger-Hill did the same thing – talked trash about the Cowboys ‘choking,’ and yes, Dallas won the game easily.

Once was dumb, and I’m sure the Eagles brass felt like they covered the issue last year. Which is why Brown is looking for a job today.

  16. Apparently the eagles weren’t concerned about the optics of this move. Message to the locker room for sure. Maybe Petersen requested it? It could backfire if everyone checks out though, maybe they already have.

  17. Brown was the Eagles fall-back option after Grugier-Hill was injured. Now the G-H is back, Brown is expendable, especially since he does not play special teams.
For any team signing him, you are getting a mentally and physically slow player, so good luck with that.

Vikings fans should relish their regular season win. They have never known the ultimate success and do not appear positioned to do so any time soon

    That is all.

  18. Lane Johnson, Grugier-Hill and now Brown.

Seems like Philly has a leadership issue starting with the arrogant GM and coach.

    I got news for you:

It is a long, long way down.

  19. Zac Brown should go back to Nashville. He can make more money with his band than playing football anyway.

that’d be awesome if the Vikings signed him for league min. just so Zach could spend the rest of the season groveling at Kirk Cousins feet apologizing…

Zack wasn’t the only one, a whole lot of Vikings fans should be “groveling at Kirk Cousins feet apologizing” too. I’ve never seen a teams fans talk so much trash about their own QB as Vikes fans do about Cousins……….NEVER!

  21. I love all the Vikings fans coming on talking trash about a regular season win. Come to think of it, they talked trash last year after the Vikes win in Philly.well Skol fans let’s remember at least 4 things—
    1. The Eagles won the game that REALLY mattered with a 38-7 thrashing in the 17 NFCC.

    2. Then they won SB LII in YOUR Stadium. The Vikes are STILL looking for their FIRST SB win.

    3. The Eagles are, if memory serves 2-0 vs the Vikings in playoff games.(81 and 17)

    4. And last year, despite having a better record going into the final game, plus head to head, they managed to watch the Eagles beat Chicago ON THE ROAD when they couldn’t do it at home to see up a playoff spot.

  22. Lotsa trash talk in mid-October. Let’s see where things stand once the weather gets cold.

  23. Cousins will never lead the Vikings to the promised land of super bowls but to badmouth an upcoming opponent is just plain stupid.glad they cut him.

  24. Reminds me of that dude on the steelers that bad mouthed the patriots then bill came into town and they hung like 40 on them including torching the loudmouth….Ryan Clark comes to mind but I’m not sure if it was him or not…

Guys, he wasn’t wrong about Cousins.

Kurt will show his true self against an above .500 team.

Eagles were 3-2 when he played them. Meaning he played an above .500 team.
