Tom Brady on potential Gronk return: I don’t lobby for those things

While debuting in his new role as a studio analyst last Thursday night, former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski broached the subject of a return to the playing field.

Gronkowski said he would have to be “feeling it big-time” in order to reverse course, but that he’ll always keep the door open to playing again. As we’ve discussed in these parts before, there’s a thought that a plea from Tom Brady to return would nudge Gronkowski back into uniform.

The subject of a Gronkowski return came up during Brady’s weekly appearance on WEEI Monday and the quarterback said he won’t be making any public pitch to get the tight end back into the offense.

“Look, I love that guy. I am so happy that he’s enjoying his time. I am happy that he’s enjoying his life.” Brady said. “He seems to really be doing a lot of great things. He knows how I feel about him. I want what is best for him. He’s the only person that can make those decisions. I don’t lobby for those things. I have a great relationship with him. He has given actually a hell of a lot to our team already over the course of a long period of time, and I think people should be very appreciative for what he’s brought to the team and what he’s brought to the region. I think he’s a very special guy. He’s just in a different phase of his life.”

The deeper we get into the season, the likelier it is that Gronkowski will remain in that phase of his life while the Patriots try to return to the Super Bowl without his assistance.

  1. Seeing that, at the moment, Jason Witten is not the magic elixir for Dallas, having lost 3 straight, Gronk is likely not inclined to return to that kind of pressure in NE.

  2. Bronk got beat up pretty bad physically in the NFL. There’s no need to go through that grind again. 3 rings, hall of fame jacket getting tailored. Enjoy life with health.

  3. Tom, enough. You make the gameplans and BB asks you your opinion on certain players who would be signed, etc.

    Stop.

This angle that he has no say or control of anything is ridiculous. He would love Gronk to play and has reached out to players in the past, lobbying for them.

  4. Gronk looks like he lost a great deal of muscle. Even if he came back it would be some long time before he would become the same player he was before he left. Let him enjoy his money and health.

Brady should have show some class and respect Gronkowski’s decision.

This isn’t about “class”, it’s about competitiveness or saying he enjoyed playing with him.

The point is, Brady needs to move on. Skipping OTAs and then whining about the quality of your weapons is annoying.

Unusual take given that Brady demonstrated nothing but class and respect for Gronkowski’s retirement decision, and all the contributions Gronk made to the Pats as a player.

  8. Gronk can’t come back because he currently would fail a drug screening. He’s signed endorsements with a cannabis oil company and has a new gig on TV. He’s not coming back.

  9. I don’t see Gronk coming back after everything he’s been through. He accomplished plenty in the NFL. He escaped with his health intact. I think he would like to keep it that way.

Try coming back to reality Brady did not lobby for Gronk to come back. Also, he’s been the quarterback for damn near two decades he’s earned the right to skip OTAs and give his critique of the team.

  11. I really dont think the PAts need Gronk this year. I havent seen a game yet that I thought they were in that much trouble.

There isn’t a team they wont beat IMO. If Brady comes back NEXT year and they start slipping, then that would be perfect.
Lets wait until they atleast lose a game? Or somehow dont get a first week bye. Neither of those will happen.

I need more of his Barstool content and Fox analysis anyways.

That’s what I am saying..He was as giddy as a schoolgirl with Antonio Brown, having stay at his guest house (!!!), giving him special treatment due to him being a veteran and having obvious, great talent.

He clearly has no idea, nor does he care, how bad it looks.

I am a diehard Pats fan, but I can at least admit this.

  13. Gronk would be foolish to comeback this season. He would have to play completely “Un Gronk-like” or he would get murdered……he’s 25lbs. lighter. He struggled to stay healthy before, how would he absorb those hits now? Hate the Pats, but never want to see anybody hurt. He should play in that Legends Flag League, I’d love to see how much faster he is now without seeing him get destroyed up the middle.

  14. Why can’t the media just leave it be? You can’t on one hand, talk how much you care about players safety and effects of the game on them physically, and then keep the Gronk coming back talk alive, almost begging for him to come back. Just stop, let him be.

No he hasn’t. He’s not above the team. it’s also a bad look to not invite any new WR to his ranch in Montana or play favorites by housing someone like Brown, giving him special treatment over others.

No one should be above the team, and it’s VERY clear that BB has had to find ways to keep Brady’s ego in check. Brady normally does a good job with the ego, but sometimes he does go too far. I thought it was a nice gesture by BB to give Brady the gameball for his career accomplishment, but these early season games with Brady trying to get his stats up, backfire a lot. You have Michel hadn’t been used until the 2nd half of th Skins game, Damien Harris rides the bench, and we see some pretty horrendous playcalling from Brady/McDaniels as if they’ve never played before. Go look at the playcall log of the first half vs Washington. It’s atrocious.

But, reining Brady in cannot be easy.

Next, Cody Kessler confirmed what I’ve always known…Brady makes the gameplan with McDaniels. BB only intervenes when those two prove they’re clueless both in approach and playcalls. You’d think this wouldn’t be an annual thing when they’re so slow to start the year, wasting reps with newer players, but nope. It keeps happening. The excuse used to be to blame the D, but he can’t do that anymore, can he? I’ve said for years, his skipping these OTAs like this puts MORE pressure on him now. He did it to himself.

Don’t say “I can’t help them”, when YOU CAN not only help them, I don’t want Antonio Brown eating your avacado ice cream while you ignore others that need help.

For a month now, the first half, ignoring the run, while ignoring other passing options until very recently, mainly in the first halves of games, has been atrocious.

And the pouting at the podium after a good win, is also annoying.

    How’s that for reality/honesty? Hmm?

  16. Integrity left the building on this team decades ago.

Do you display your high moral standards for all teams to live by, or just the Pats?

TB has owned the Steelers beginning decades ago. It may have more to do with that.

Let me guess, the Steelers organization has integrity? Dr. Rydze anyone?

  18. Every year this team has a winning record and every year I have to hear about chemistry with his receivers all year, until playoffs where magically it all starts *clicking*.remember the defense last year couldn’t stop tannahill, mariota, looked like crap all year then all of a sudden playoffs come and it just clicks BS doesn’t happen like that Pat’s pinkhats fans it’s called ch*****ting,,, where’s the deflater no interviews on one of the biggest sports scandals in new England c’mon everyone hates the Pat’s for good reasons real football fans can see it, not the tylawpic6’s of the world blinded bye the lies, dude said Jamal Adam’s was a bust draft pick shows you his football knowledge

  19. Brady urged his offense to do better as he has been instructed to do that’s not pouting after a win. They can do much better than what they are doing right now luckily Wynn is coming back soon as is Harry this is an incomplete offense right now especially with Devlin out. Brady has never put himself above the team hence why he takes constant pay cuts which is a major reason why the dynasty happened in the first place. Once again come back to reality dude.

  21. Real FB fans realise the cheating stuff is nothing. Pats were good afterwards. Haters are a very small, yet vocal minority. Pats are going down in history as the greatest NFL dynasty of all time. Haters are just gonna have to live with it. Glad it hurts

He’s not a bust, but I would be ticked off if my team drafted an immature, dumb and one dimensional “Safety” who only plays downhill to the line of scrimmage an is poor in coverage.

SHows everyone how poor your reading comprehension is.

What’s next, Leonard Williams is NOT a bust? bawhaha

There’s a reason why you people watch an inferior product every year. You have a bit of the Steelers’ fan disease with extreme homerism and thinking because a player wears your colors, they’re the best thing since sliced bread.

  23. GRONK not coming back….& that’s ok…..Pats have won without him before & they will yet again…. they are currently undefeated at 6-0…..why is this even a story at this stage??

So responding to the question by saying he is happy for Gronk and is not going to question his decisions is not doing exactly that?
