Jerry Jones: Jason Garrett would be very sought after on open market

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett’s job security has been a frequent topic of conversation over the last decade and the team’s current three-game losing streak has brought it back to the forefront once again.

Garrett has gotten votes of confidence from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones this month and he got another one from the elder Jones during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday. Jones was asked to address the thought that Garrett is on the hot seat.

“I want to talk about our team, talk about coach,” Jones said. “I have felt that we got a lot invested in Jason Garrett. He’s had a lot of years that he’s been a part of the Cowboys and he evolved into what, I think, is a top coach. He would be a very sought after coach if he were out here in the open market. So, there’s a lot of pluses there. He brings a lot to the table and I can genuinely say that that is not a thought that I am having. So, it would be unfair to our fans for me to have any indication about what I may think the future is as far as head coach.”

Given Jones’s belief that Garrett is a top coach who would be in high demand from teams trying to beat the Cowboys, one might wonder why the Cowboys have not extended his contract beyond the 2019 season.

“Everybody is aware that we’re on the last year of his agreement,” Jones said. “But that really just means that we can all sit down and take a look at things at the end of the year. That was the case when he won the first three ballgames, and still the case today after losing the last three.”

As long as those losses continue to come, Garrett’s immediate future with the Cowboys will continue to be a weekly topic of conversation regardless of how often members of the Jones family say it shouldn’t be on the table.

  1. That is what they were saying about Mike McCarthy when he was let go. His couch seems to be the only thing that sought him out.

  2. LMAO! Presumably this why, every year without fail, after Jerry has failed to acquire his latest fantasy football coach, he endlessly tells everyone he has full confidence in Garrett.

  3. Be that as it may, sometimes you get to a point where a coach has taken your team as far as he’s able to. Maybe Jason Garrett would have 10 teams after him; maybe he would have none, but that should not play a role in your decision to keep him or not.

  4. Jerry “Baghdad Bob” Jones has come out and said everything’s fine.

Garrett is the HC. Unless Jerry feels he can come up with a plausible back peddle. I’m not convinced he can. If he does, whom would you rather coach for? JJ or Dan in WAS?

  5. Right and if he loses to Philly that’s just where he’ll be right Jerrah? LOLOLOL!!!!!

  6. I used to think that Jason Garrett kept his job because he had nude pics of Jerry Jones …. now I’m left wondering if Jerruh has nude pics of Garrett

  7. This is one of the exceptions to the rule where the grass is most certainly greener on the other side. LET HIM GO ALREADY! How many more years of piss poor coaching must us Cowboy fans endure. It’s so obvious to everyone but the person who lies with them.

  8. the cowboys sitting at .500 (again) and the owner extolling the virtues of his head coach.

this is the very definition of mediocrity.

  9. The fact that he is in the last year of his contract without an extension says it all. This year is do or die for Garrett….

  10. Can you fire him so we can all find out? Thank you.

I used to hate Garrett. I don’t anymore. Jerry has less input in the decisions these days but Garrett is still a puppet. Garrett isn’t the reason we are losing these games but he doesn’t help win any either. It’s just time for a change.

  11. Lol…No, sorry. Man if Jerry Jones could just step aside and get the right people in there to make decisions This team would be light years better. But you know what they say about shaking it more than twice. This house been shaking it nonstop for 25 years

  12. Garrett will not be fired no matter what , but he may decide to step down … also known as being fired #wink

  13. He would be an awesome Lyft or Uber driver.
Drives by the book. Slows down promptly at the Yellow light.

Garret is like Tesla Auto Pilot, but with less personality, and higher chance of wreckage.

  14. Oooh! So is he “guaranteeing” that garrett would be highly sought after?? I wanna see 5+ articles saying jerry guaranteed this.

  15. Tony Dungy was a mighty fine coach and look what happened when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired HIM. Got Gruden and he promptly took them to the SUPER BOWL. Maybe Jerry needs to look at some history of the NFL.

  16. Do you think there is any coincidence that both the QB and head coach don’t have contracts past this year? Jerry keeps hyping both of them up but has yet to give them contracts. I think that’s the biggest sign that they aren’t committed to either one past this year and whether they do commit will be depend on if they make the playoffs and how deep they go.

A new coach probably isn’t going to want Dak for anything more than a transition player until he gets the QB he wants. If Cowboys make it deep in the playoffs he will sign Garret and Dak. If not Dak will get franchise tagged and Garrett is gone.

  17. JJ is a smart old f*rt. He knows by saying outlandish sound bites he takes the heat off his losing streak and makes the talking heads and fans lose their minds. It’s a win for him. Stop falling for the bait.

  18. whatever you say jerry. its honestly reaching disturbing levels of loyalty he has towards Garrett. hes absolutely awful coach. you cant criticize jerrys drafting but this situation with Garrett is getting insane. who by the way looks like he has jaundice. garrett doesnt look healthy at ALL.

  19. Any franchise that wants to waste the primes of their pro bowl caliber players would trip over themselves for Garrett.

LA Chargers have their radar locked in.

  20. Tony Dungy was a mighty fine coach and look what happened when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired HIM. Got Gruden and he promptly took them to the SUPER BOWL.

It’s not far fetched to imagine that with Brad Johnson of that era playing quarterback, Dallas would be 6-0.

  21. Jason Garrett is only being sought after by the Feds for impersonating a real NFL head coach. As a cowboys fan, I hope they give him life in prison when they finally catch him. That’s only after Jerry let’s his pride go. I guess it’s hard to train another puppet or there isn’t any for him to hand pick out at the moment.

  22. LOL No Jerry he’s your puppet most owners want a coach that knows how to win. You. Red to tested for hard drugs if you believe what you say

  23. In other word Payton signed an extension so we are stuck with this clown so I have to act like he is great or i will confirm I am an incompetent GM…

  24. Talk about a backhanded compliment…”He’s evolved into what I think is a great coach.” Followed by “He would be very sought after on the open market.” Translation: Don’t worry,Jason. If I decide to can you, someone out there will give you a job.” Will I do it or won’t I?

  25. On sale this week at the Open Market:

Jason Garrett… A dime a dozen with store bonus card.

  26. Garrett will be a great coach in the XFL. Maybe the cowboys and redskins can get into a bidding war for Tomlin. Now that would be funny.

  27. Garrett is a competent, intelligent guy but he’s not a football guy. He’s the anti Jimmy Johnson and I think that’s why Jerry is so desperate to see Garrett succeed. Jerry knows that Jimmy in his prime would be competing for the super bowl with this roster

  28. He might be hired someplace. Not as a head coach, of course, but maybe as an OC or a QB coach.

  29. That’s Jerry’s ego talking here. Garrett is the prefect fit for emperor Jerry’s clothes. His ego will never let him question his decisions, ever. Someday us long time Cowboys fans will look at this time as the Jerry Jones era and laugh that painful laugh at just how a delusional owner can keep a storied NFL franchise down while thinking he’s building it up.

  30. Well let’s see who Garrett would replace – these coaches will probably be fired after the season and Garrett would replace – Quinn ATL, Kitchens CLE, Flores MIA, Fangio, DEN, Tomlin, PIT and anyone who says Lincoln Riley would be great replacement is a moron. I can continue naming coaches that Garrett would replace if you want – The bum in CIN should be tossed as well

  31. Thanks Jerruh. I needed the laugh. You should do stand-up comedy to make a few extra bucks.

  32. The more Jerry gives support for Jason Garrett, the more stuff Garrett packs up from his office and takes home. Maybe a few extra pens also.

He might not make a move until after the year is over, but 100% sure to make a monster offer to get Sean Payton, including draft picks if that is what it takes.

But could he replace Garrett with Kris Richard to make Payton know the job is open? Maybe.

But when you give up a 92 yard touchdown pass to the Jets, maybe your passing game defensive coordinator needs more work on that first.

  33. Okay, the Dungy comparison is way off. Whoever brought that up knows zero about pro football. The Bucs were terrible before he got there & after some time were in the playoffs every year. Dungy went to the Colts & went to the playoffs consistently & won a Super Bowl.

  34. Sounds to me like someone who knows he’s going to fire his HC wants to trick someone into trading for him.

  35. Jerry Jones…a man who thinks he’s the reason the Cowboys won three out of four Super Bowls.

Since Jerry took total control, Dallas hasn’t done squat.

  36. Some people either should not post or should do their homework before they post. Dungy was in the playoffs 11 out of 13 years. BB has become the best but he had a trial period in Cleveland.

  37. In Jerry’s defense, he’s not the one who plays yo-yo with Jason’s career. The media has played that game while Jerry has stuck to his guns about Garrett maintaining his job.

  38. Jerry also said Tony Romo reminded him of Roger Staubach… Jerry also said Romo was a first ballot Hall of Famer… Jerry also said Dak was a lot like Brady…. Jerry also said Zeke was the straw that stirred the losing streak.. oh I meant the straw that stirs the drink.. sorry my bad

  39. Don’t kid yourself. This is “business speak” for “if we make him walk the plank, we’re sure he can swim to shore”.
It’s like the email you find in your in mail box at work that reads ” ______ will no longer be employed by (our company). He /she has been an invaluable asset to our company and we wish him/her well in his/her future endeavors”. That is “business speak” for somebody just got canned.

  40. Jerry, by default, is also saying that HE would be very sought after on the open market, as we all know Jason Garrett is NOTHING MORE than a mouthpiece figure head there….. as CHRIS Carter would call him: THE FALL GUY

  41. He would definitely be sought after if only because a third of the teams in the league would kill to just be mediocre and Jason Garrett is guaranteed to be mediocre year in and year out

  42. “So, it would be unfair to our fans for me to have any indication about what I may think the future is as far as head coach.”
So JJ has no idea what he is doing or thinking.

  43. Jerry should stop talking. This sounds like he is trying to convince the fans that Jason is a good coach. It just sounds patronizing. He is so narcissistic, that he does not realize that he looks like a fool. Jerry, please fade into obscurity and allow your son to run everything. Please!

  44. Hilarious! And while JJ and Snyder are BOTH horrible owners, at least Snyder doesn’t run his mouth 24/7 like the old coot Jerrud does. Sure, Jerry, while there could possibly be a lot of teams lining up to hire Carrot top, hiring him as what? Surely not as a head coach….

  45. What meds is Jerrah on? I want some.
Sought after for a HC, not likely.

Ball boy, Locker Room Laundry, most likely.

  46. Payton most likely said no. In New Orleans there is no meddling owner and why they are a perennial play-off team. In Dallas Payton will have Jerry in his ear every second on how to coach the team and players he doesn’t want, why give up something good for something horrible.

Jerry is stuck with his yes man, though he could get a desperate coach like Fisher if he wants to continue the 8 and 8 mediocrity, which they seem to be a path to this year win 3 lose 3.

  47. If he was a top coach, you’d extend him no questions asked. When the Saints were going 7-9 with Sean Payton, they stuck with him because he was a top coach and turned the team around. Garrett would not be highly sought after in the league, it’s just the Jones’ covering their backsides.

I doubt he’d get a head coaching gig, who would even want him as an OC? Maybe Washington, lol.

  48. jason garrett is living proof there is no correlation mental or otherwise between being a graduate of a high brow smarter than everyone else Ivy League school and being a successful NFL coach

  49. What does the clapper do, really? He doesn’t call offensive plays. He doesn’t do position coaching. Not sure if he even game plans. What exactly does he do other than clapping?

  50. If they lose to eagles and they keep him with the by week coming it would mean he will be retained with an extension. If this happens I will have to discontinue being a fan since 1975

Sean Payton is not leaving NO. He has a partnership with the GM that gives him total autonomy over football operations, the owner, the city and fanbase loves him, he loves the city, he makes 9.5 million a year through 2024. And he doesn’t do stupid.

  52. Wait, what? Where is the evidence that he is anything other than a puppet? He isn’t in charge of personnel moves, he is not running the offense or the defense, and we all know that Jerruh and Stephen handle the draft. If you need a fill-in, Garrett is your guy. He will bang timeouts at the end of the game in a losing effort to show everyone he isn’t giving up and he’ll throw some cuss words down but outside of that, there is nothing special there.
