Drew Brees back to working with NFL ball in thumb rehab

Saints quarterback Drew Brees offered an update on his recovery on Wednesday and it included word that he’s back to working with a regulation-sized football.

Video of Brees throwing a football surfaced earlier this month, but the ball was smaller than the one used in NFL games. During an appearance on WWL Radio, Brees shared that he’s now back to the bigger ball as he continues rehabbing his right thumb injury.

“I’ve graduated to the NFL ball,” Brees said. “I have a really kind of disciplined plan for what I need to do for strength and flexibility and then my throwing and all that stuff. So really starting to get back into it, doing football stuff, and just trying to get back as quick as I can.”

Brees said that he will be wearing a splint on his thumb when he does return to action “because it does take a while for that ligament to actually heal.” Week Eight has been the target date for that return to action, although nothing has been set in stone with a Week Seven game against the Bears on the horizon.

  1. The Saints better locate and draft Drew Brees successor in this next draft as Bree’s QB expiration date is quickly approaching & he doesn’t have much left. If I were Sean Peyton i’d take a hard look at GA QB Jake Fromm, he reminds me a bit of Brees and has the perfect skill set to run Peyton’s offensive system. Joe Burrow is another guy I really like & like more and more the more I see him play, Burrow is going to be an excellent pro QB. Burrow’s adjusted completion percentage from a clean pocket is an insane 85.2%, that stat translates to pro success as a QB, the higher the better. You likely will be forced to trade up into the top 10 for Joe Burrow though, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him go top 3-5 by the time the draft rolls around.

  2. So it wasn’t even a real football he was gently lobbing ten yards a while ago? Not surprised because if you look it up the 6-week figure is really 6-8 weeks min, and that is before you try to get back to throwing deeply, or accurately. And then getting it firm enough to risk getting it hit again in a game, let alone week after week. He could poss make it back before end of the year, but he won’t be 100% til next yr. I told y’all so, and y’all thumbed me down. Enjoy.

Sounds like this pats fan is scared of Brees…he should be.

Payton will not rush Brees unless they start losing.

  4. The fact that the Saints are winning without Brees means he is a system QB. He is still great but he has definitely benefitted from Payton’s system.
